Re: Soviet Russia

Just a little information... Not supporting it either way, but I had to do a report on this, so I know a little bit about it.

These jokes are called Russian Reversals. The original technique was introduced by "Minister of Propaganda" Yakov Smirnoff sometime in the '80s. There is quite a bit more information here:

http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Russian_reversal
(This site jokes about most things, so the facts probably aren't too straight. But what I posted above I have confirmed elsewhere. This site simply gives a good place to look up the 'rules' on creating your own Russian Reversal.)

Again... I just saw the thread title and said, 'I know about that!', and decided to post. I am not supporting or opposing the use of Russian Reversals on this board. Just giving some background information.

We were down in our cafeteria driving our 2005 chassis to test out a 6WD. One of my classmates came down and asked us what our opinion was on the fashion trend for guys of wearing their pants with their boxers showing (it was an article for the school newspaper). A teammate of mine used a Russian Reversal joke:

"In Soviet Russia, pants wear you!"

The interviewer quoted him on it.
[P.S.]The newspaper hasn't come out yet, but I'll be interested to see whether or not he actually used it. [/P.S.]

The History of the "Soviet Russia" Joke- Wikipedia

Here's the link to the Wikipedia page with the history and various examples of the "Soviet Russia" joke- actually quite interesting. I've pulled out some of the best jokes:

This is where the basic idea for the joke came from:

For example, one well known joke of this type (already in circulation in the 1960s) runs (with minor variations) “In the US, you watch television. In Soviet Russia, television watches you!” or “In the US, you check out books at the library. In Soviet Russia, library book checks out you!”, both punchlines refer to systems of omnipresent surveillance characteristic of police states. The first joke alludes to video screens that both reproduce images and monitor the citizenry, as in Nineteen Eighty-Four. A modern version in the same spirit is: "In Mozilla, you keep tabs on your browser. In Soviet Russia, browser keeps tabs on you!"

In the US, you pity the fool. In Soviet Russia, fool pities you!

(Regarding poker- from ESPN) In Soviet Union, Full House means KGB in your basement!

(For my Canadian friends) In Soviet Russia, Waldo finds YOU!

In my country, Andy Baker raises the bar.

Hmm, I wonder if Yoda had anything to do with the development of Russian Reversal

In Soviet Russia, Yoda speak like you!

EDIT: I was just thinking about the how we could emphasize this is a game and not meant to be offensive. Maybe we could have a mod change the title to "In Soviet Russia..." and move it to the forum games?

I like this idea. It is definitely a fun game, as long as you don't have the intention of poking fun at anyone. I agree with the mod suggestions.
