None of us had seen inventor before kick-off. Keeping everyone headed in the same direction seems more important to success than the software itself.

I'd try an jump in slightly earlier than we did though. :)

Yeah we could make the jump and learn but my goal is to never have to do any of the CAD work for our team:D . The last 2 years students did it all I got spoiled. Like Scheuing said we'll have a few students trained and ready. I'm just really proud of where our students got so quickly with their ability to use the software and know their contributions will be missed.

We didn't have any mentors on the design crew at all this year. The past few years we had one, Pete Keiselbach, but this year it was just us. Only the students work on the submission and actually our past mentor never touched the actual CAD modeling. We beleive it should be completely student controlled and it works out very well for us that way.

Re: How many Inventorians?

For our team we just have one main guy, Rick, doing all the cadding, even though we have 40+ students from our inventor classes that could do it, we just take the more dedicated students and let them do it. On the team we only have 3 people that are fully trained in Inventor, and more of the sophmores are taking the class next year, and some of the freshman are as well, but as we do every year we're only going to have 3 main cadders (even though I don't really do any cad work, unless if highly neccesary). Rick takes full pride in doing all of his work, and requests no help. He usually finishes with or before the robot. Galen just sits there and learns from Rick, and I show Rick a few short cuts that he's never heard of.

so I'll say we have 3 cadders 33.33% of which are actually being used :P

Last year, we took pictures of our robot with rulers next to it so we could CAD it after ship. Luckily, we did the CAD before the robot this year.

I design the frame on the computer. Then while others are working on making it, I discuss the ideas that the team has came up with and make simple models to test whether it will work and to help define dimensions. I would like to do more on Inventor, but I just do not have time to do it all alone.:(

I love it when things work according to plan! Working yourself out of a job can be so gratifying. :D The proof will be next year, when Rob and Mike are gone - will this year's freshmen be ready to fill your shoes, or will I have to go back to work?

The amount of people you have on your team means very little. It's been proven in the past that a 3 man team can beat a 5+ man team. Inventor isn't simply based on manpower, because the program is so intraquite you can have one person who works really well do the job of three people.

Just so you guys know, it was the freshmen that did the wiring and tubing on the robot this year. Also, one of them did the Tower System.

No petek, you can continue to hibernate. We will be fine! lol.
