How Many Threepeat Chairman's

Does anybody know how many three time regional chairman's winners there are in the FIRST community? I think KoKo Ed might know this. Anybody?

Geez, now I'm like some all-knowing all-seeing FIRST sage who lives in the moutains waiting for students to venture upwards to my home to ask me if there will ever be a water game....

This isn't a three but one of the mentors from Team Krunch, FRC 79, told me their win at the Florida Regional this past weekend was their 5th win. It was cool.

Jane

oops - Ed beat me (thanks Ed) but to add: this mentor was wearing a pink teeshirt while he was talking to me, spreading the news about Breast Cancer Awareness. It was very very cool.

The FIRST site doesn't show the 2007 GLR Chairman's yet.

I recall the CircuitRunners winning the regional CA at Peachtree in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Close but no cigar for my team: 931 won the regional CA in 2005, regional EI in 2006, and regional CA again in 2007 -- all at St. Louis. :)

  • 365 has won it 3 times in 06, 05, and 02

But are we talking 3 times or in a row because if it wasn't for MOE or Miss Daisy one of them would be up there with Krunch. Phili is probably the best Chairman's competition with 341, 357 and 365 duking it out.
The next best one I can think of is FLR where 340 and 1511 are neck and neck for the award.

Actually, 365 won it in 06, 05 and 02
In 03, 341 won it at Philly, and 357 won it at MD (where 365 applied). For more background on the Philly Chairman’s teams check this post

Also, 236 Techno Ticks has won it 4 times (3 in row at CT).

Lil' Lavery 13-03-2007 22:25

Re: How Many Threepeat Chairman's

They have been mentioned earlier in this post, but here are the teams I know of that have won on 3 different years (if you count winning 2, regional & championship, in the same year, the list grows by several teams):
79 (5 years in a row, variety of locations including Florida, Denver, and Las Vegas)
236 (not sure years/locations)
341 (2003-2005, Philly & Chesapeake)
365 (2002, 2005-06, Philly & Pittsburgh)
503 (WMR & GLR)
842 (2005-2007, Arizona)
1002 (2004-2006, Peachtree)

As for the most competitive Chairman's regional, Ed, add VCU to your list. In 2007, VCU had 27 Chairman's applicants, including 3 2006 winners (384, 612, and 1002), each of whom has finished in the Top 10 at the Championship level before. 116 also received full "currently strong" marks and no "needs improvement" marks. 435 has also won the RCA in the past, and submitted there.

When I heard about the Chairman's field at VCU, I was in awe. It must have been very difficult to be a judge for that one. 116, 1002, 384 and 612 are all teams that deserve an RCA.

Another team at Philly that is often overlooked on CD is Lansdale Catholic Team 272. They won WFA & RCA in Pittsburgh (2004?). They have one of the most enthusiastic, hardworking, and helpful teams in FIRST. They also do very well on the field each year.

Here's one nobody has mentioned yet: Team 1108 https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index....info&team=1108.
They have won three Chairman's in a row, at three different regionals, and won the national Rookie All-Star in 2003, which is almost as good. Thier awards list is unbelivable for how young they are.

Wow, 3 RCA at 3 different regionals, very impressive! Dave

Re: How Many Threepeat Chairman's

All that info is incredible! I knew the CD community would be able to list them all. So it seems that there are 7 teams that have done it consecutive or not, and same regional or not.

Any predictions on what team will have a good shot for the national title, and why.

We are still new at this and are trying to learn what we could do next. Thanks all.

I'm talking about for years to come.
Both teams will probably be trading the award back and forth between them for as long as they still qualify for it.

Techno Ticks, Team 236 won 4 in a row.......2003 at the inaugural BAE in Manchester, NH then 2004, 2005 and 2006 at UTC in Hartford, CT.

We were at all of them and finally learned our lesson this year......we submitted in Boston.

Wow, that's quite the accomplishment. Have you competed in 2007 yet?

1188 got Rookie All-Star in 2003, CA in Detroit in 2004, and then EI in 2005, 6 and 7 (DT, GL, GL). Which means we have qualified for, and gone to, the Championship all 5 years of our existance.

1108 also has qualified for Champs every year - how many other teams have?

Re: How Many Threepeat Chairman's

So does anyone else remember when the Championships were still in Orlando, and the year (1998?) that Dean announced the addition of the five "Chairman's Award Runners-Up"? If a team won three "Runner Up" awards, they would automatically earn a Championship Chairman's Award for the next year (in which case there could actually be two Chairman's Awards given that year). I wonder if a Regional Chairman's Award is equivalent to a "Runner Up" award, and if earning three or more should qualify a team for a Championship Chairman's Award?

I dunno, but I think if Krunch has earned 5 Regional Chairman's Awards, that should qualify for something. That is very very special. Three is an incredible achievement and should qualify as such - much less five.

Yes, the CircuiRunners have graciously recieved the RCA three years in a row. We fell to mighty 612, but look out for those guys getting their third one next year. They are on FIRE.
And looking back on it, VCU was absolutely ridiculous when it came to the strength of all the teams there, especially when it came to chairmans award.
Best of luck to all teams competing this year.

I don't know if three regional Chairman's Awards is the right number, but I like the notion behind this -- FRC has grown very significantly since the HoF criterion was established. Maybe we need more than one new HoF team per year?

And as Sean pointed out, putting some of the stronger RCA teams in the HoF would make a little room for someone else to win an RCA, especially at mature regionals where the competition is very stiff every year.

If we count the old "Chairman's Finalist" awards from the days before the Regional Chairman's, 16 joins this club as well.
They were Chairman's Award Finalists in 1996, 1997, 1998, AND 1999, and finally won the Chairman's Award in 2000. They also won the 2004 Chesapeake Chairman's award.

How did they win the 2004 Chesapeake Chairman's? I thought HOF teams were ineligible.

If you count the "Chairman's Finalist" awards, Buzz would also be in there. They were finalists in 1999, 2000, and 2001 before winning a Regional Chairman's award (the first year of regional chairman's awards) and the Championship Chairman's award in 2002.

You can throw 67 in there too. They followed their '97 National* Rookie All Star with National* Chairman's Finalists in '98 & '99. They finally won the big one in '05 after a West Michigan RCA.

As for HOF teams winning a RCA, 22 did it at LA the year after winning the National* Chairman's Award.

*Remember it was "Nationals" back then.

They won it by mistake.
It seems the judges were unaware that they were not supposed to reward them the Chairman's award.

Following up on Brian's post, MOE did not submit a Chairmans Award entry for 2004. We had a number of program ideas for the organization that were in their infancy (MOEmentum, MORE, 501(c)3 development, FLL tournament, etc.), and it was appropriate for our team to focus our resources on what we needed to do to develop, grow and sustain these young programs. That "year off" from having a Chairmans team has significantly helped our organization, and has given us a stronger foundation to accomplish our goals.

Is that the same as the "Chairman's Award Honorable Mentions" that they have given the last few years? I believe to 3 teams each year. I would support a rule that if a team receives 3 honorable mentions, they should qualify for the Championship Award (and not just because MOE has won 2 of them... :D )
