Two Portal Enhancements
Two quick (and minor) portal enhancements this morning ...
1) '# replies' will be bold if you've replied in the thread. 2) If you hover over the cell in the listing, it will preview the thread, similar to how the forum listing does. Thanks to Joey Gannon for reminding me to do these. |

this is a major improvement....even though it was hopefully easy for you to implement... |
Re: Two Portal Enhancements
Brandon,
There appears to be a slight problem with the enhancements. http://pcpat67.googlepages.com/Portal_Problem.jpg I'm running Windows XP Media Center, using Firefox 2.0.0.2. I refreshed and the problem did not go away. In fact, the description stayed with that thread with new threads appearing above without the problem. |

Only that one thread... |
Re: Two Portal Enhancements
A quick look at the source reveals that the greater than and less than symbols, along with double quotes are not being escaped correctly.
I don't know PHP well enough to know what to do, but that's what's going on, Brandon. Let's see... <test>Hey Brandon! Lookie here! :D ^ didn't work only because I didn't create the thread. Oh well... |

I Made the final plunge just over 6 months ago. So far full immersion is not so bad - some things are still a bit of a challenge (like dual screen requires some tricky xorg configurations), but a lot can be achieved with a base install and Automatix - no command line needed. - Jeff (There are still a few key apps I half to go back for, like CAD. But hey - there's always virtualization if dual boot isn't desirable.) |

I don't mind using MS products, somehow I manage to stay out of their grasp. Maybe because I'm content to use their old products. |

Re: Two Portal Enhancements
Problem: these preview tooltips are huge and kind of annoying.
Is there an option to limit thread preview size? Maybe we could have a spinner in User CP that determines the maximum number of words or characters in the tooltip. Or better yet, in lieu of a tooltip, display a small (javascript?) preview pane that appears after hovering over a title in the portal. The pane could be movable, scrollable, expandable, and copy-and-pasteable to dynamically adjust to how much of the first post the user wanted to read. Or even better still, steal one from TiddlyWiki (sans the fancy animations) and display some of the first post (again, a spinner might be useful) right after a thread title when it is clicked in the portal. When another thread title is clicked, make the old preview pane go away, and make a new one appear. Just a few ideas. Thanks for all your work! |

Solution: get Firefox 2.0! ;) Now, your tooltips will be will be limited to a single line, without any need for Brandon to make some code modifications and/or add unnecessary Javascript to an already heavily modified vBulletin. |
Re: Two Portal Enhancements
I am using Firefox 2.0. I forgot that I am using the Long Titles extension (I originally got it so I could read the entire tooltips on the xkcd comics). The only negative side effect is that it produces some ugly-looking blocks of text on CD. So ignore my complaint-- if I get sufficiently annoyed, I'll just turn the extension off.
Edit: Mozilla bug 45375 and Firefox bug 218223 (which cause long tooltips to be broken with "...") are both fixed in Firefox 3.0alpha4 and SeaMonkey 1.1beta. So with the release of FF 3.0, my problem will soon become everyone's problem. Just a heads-up. |
