2007's Best Robot Ramps
 

I thought it would be neat to see what you all consider to be the best ramps different teams have had. At Peachtree, Team 1311 (Kell Robotics), had a very nice curved ramp, which helped prevent robots getting stuck on lips and angles. They had a vertical edge to help prevent driving off the end/side, and proved to be a formidable opponent with their excellent defense. And, I must say, their robot was by far the coolest-looking one there. Great job, Kell.

247's ramp is pretty good. One robot drives on top, and another goes on their ramp, which then lifts up at least to 12". If they won both the Pittsburg and Detroit Regionals, it's gotta be good.

488's is one of the more original ones I've seen -- there's sort of a scissor base on the bottom and it just pushes the platform outward to lift.

86's ramp was great, it had to be since they won Florida. they also were a good defender. their's was probabily the easiest ramp that i drove up at Florida

1501 was incredible I love that total loophole they found in the rules. If they started lifting before the end of the match and both bots stayed on tah dah 60. The air system kept raising it after the robot was disabled because the solenoid didn't change state, or at least that is how I understand it.

I have to agree with that

They had a 13 degree incline and it was easy even for our robot who was really close to the ground to get up, it was great!!!!

also I have heard that Da Bears (247) was good, well I wish them the best of luck at nats and hope that we are in the same division and maybe we could win something together like we did at palmetto last year

469-The coolest ramp when it deploys, it is wide, and it is very easy to get up if you have a high frame

190's ramps are very impressive, easy to get up and lift quickly. They were very successful at BAE, and even more so at the Silicon Valley regional today where they made the finals (didn't see who won..).

I'd have to say 1501's air-powered total lift was one of the best systems I've seen in action. Simple to get on, and keeps lifting even when the power is cut.
Super idea! :D

I noticed many robots having trouble with getting up the ramps and staying on...oops! Anyhow... driving onto a platform then lifting it with the bot(s) seems to be the best way to go.

I would say that team 86's ramp is by far the best I have seen this year. Not only is it wide and 13 degrees but it has a pole sticking up at the end so that a robot does not overun the ramp. They have a fast and reliable way of lifting too.

I couldnt find any pics but heres a link to one of our elimination matches in Florida there is a clear shot of them lifting 1270 and 1251 for 60 points

997 was teh champ and both Xbot's and 997's robots had two large platforms that would lift robots. Very reliable.

im surprised no one mentioned team 330 not only do they have a ramp but a sick arm. also remember there are about 2 weeks worth of games left dont downgrade the ones you have yet see.

Let me second and say that Kell's (1311) ramp was amazing, definitely one of the best at peachtree. We were with them in our last qualifying match and it was the easiest ramp I had to drive up.

QFT. These were two of the finalists at SVR (190, 1516, 1280 won I believe), and both these ramp/lifters were really automatic. Both designs use pneumatics I think?

Team 1501's buzzer lifts are awesome, they helped us at Boilermaker during the qualifying rounds. My only suggestion to the team is to somehow get a bigger ramp base. We had to enter the ramp on an angle so one wheel was off the ramp. This way, the frame was resting on the ramp so we wouldn't fall off.

My favorite ramp bot has definitely been 1816, the Green Machine. Awesome defense and very solid ramps. They were pretty easy to climb up on and elevated themselves via pneumatics very quickly.

The best two ramps at FLR IMHO were 316 and 1518

316 is a double lifter and can also score tubes. They were #2 seed and will also be at Philly.

1518 is a double ramp/lifter. They made it all the way to finalist as the #8 alliance captain.

4 ramp bots stood out at Detroit Regionals:

247 (Da Bears): double lifter, good defense. Their reliable double lift brought them a regional win.
27 (Rush): another double lifter with an incredibly wide ramp with a small angle (9 degrees). Also a more than decent scorer.
469 (Las Guerrillas): Another very wide double lifter with scoring capability.
703 (Phoenix): Slightly smaller than the above but with nice side rails, 703's carbon fiber ramp is definitely a must see. Their 14 wheel drive allowed them to play some tough D and effectively shut down the best scorers.

My faves are 27, 469, and 1625. 27 and 469's are just absolutely huge, and from a driver's standpoint that's verryy good and I don't think I ever saw anyone fall off of them (plus the way they lift up the edge at the end is a great, efficient way to do it). 1625's lifters are similar to the one in the post above me; they lift up their whole robot along with the other two. It's epic to watch, a real crowd-pleaser :p

Team 558s ramps were amazing, 38" Wide with a low incline. The big thing that stood out about them to us however, was their amazing defensive plays. Unlike many ramp teams out there, 558 was capable of being effective during the match by consistently shutting down the most offensive robots on the opposing alliance. The combination of great drivers and a quality robot makes them my choice for best ramp bot of 2007.

for me, i have to say 1070 had some excellent ramps (lol). they could lift an elephant!!!

but overall, at the LA regional, 330 had some awesome ramps (in addition to their excellent scoring ability, it made them unstoppable) and the SV regional, i have to say 190 was a pretty excellent bot with their lift system...

488 and 190 had awesome lifts. I am more partial to 488's lift because it was very easy to get onto and it could perform a "buzzer" lift.

As our ramps are pneumatically driven up to 12'', they can and have performed "buzzer" lifts. In the final match at SVR, our anti-rollback devices kept one side from going from 12'' to 0, instead gaining us 15 points.

I think 378 has one of the best lifts/ramps I have seen. We used it to score 60 points five consecutive matches in the eliminations at Pittsburgh. It would have been 6 if we hadn't ended up on our back. 128 still got up though. A 1 or 2 inch high ramp on one side and rails to lift on the other side. The 'bot on the rail side only needed about a 1 inch clearance to get on.



128 had an excellent ramp also. We got up it with no problem in the qualifying matches.

1816 was great. Such an amazing alliance partner. They had two ramps that lifted up on each side via pneumatics. They also played great defense (I justed watched the video of one of our qualifying match where they kept all three of the opponents robots on their side of the field, allowing them to score only 2 ringers.)

488, 1501, 107, 71. I've yet to see the 9 degree ramp of RUSH.

Maybe 1504 will be on this list in the future, but who knows how good the ramps will be for us.

Aside from my own team, of course, I think my next pick would be 247. Every match I saw with them they successfully managed to lift both robots on their alliance. They were very impressive.

Team 86. By far one of the easiest ramps to climb at UCF and can always be relied on to get two robots 14inches off the ground in a quick and efficient manner.

2274 has the most innovative ramp I've seen by far this season. They're a rookie team from New York and they had a little "mousie," as their mentor described to me--a little mini robot embedded in the belly of their drivetrain--drive out and push out their ramp, then drive back, leaving the ramp to sit squarely on the ground. I'll try to post a picture if I find one, but this great design helped them beat us in the finals round and win the New York regional. Definitely a great design, especially for a first-year team.

I second a vote for 2274. Their ramp was amazing, and the "mouse" worked really well. Their ramp sat enough above the 12" mark, that it wasn't ever a close call either.

Also up in Wisconsin, 93's lifters were pretty awesome, and 2202's ramp was solid and easy to climb.

Even though they don't have a ramp, I think that team 316 (LunaTecs) Has a great forklift. I personally haven't seen any better. (That's just my opinion)

More lifting...
1717 lifted 18 Robots (28 including ourself), 15", in 10 qualifying matches. The only two we didn't lift were disabled and couldn't even drive, let alone get lifted.

We lifted another 10 robots in the quarters, semis, and finals.
330, 696, and 835 (1216) played awesome defense for two rounds and prevented our teammates from getting lifted in the last two matches of the finals. Congratulations on your win!

Ya, we know that... but we still lift at least 120 pounds of our own robot (the gas springs themselves are relatively insignificant weight-wise) which is reason to be stoked... as for that Jedi hunt, lemme know if you find one, might come in handy... Who knows :P

Can you explain a bit more about how your robot is designed? Specifically, I'm curious how many gas springs you use, their force, stroke and location and -- the biggie -- how they're restrained and released at the end of each match.

I was told y'all need something like 8 people to reset them. How do you get the machine off the field at the end of a match and how do you reset it?

They're a box with an arm inside. From what I've seen during reset, it looks like 2 gas springs per lift, on opposite corners. Might be more. To get the bot off the field, they fold up the ramps somehow first without collapsing the springs.

Well... Our robot has sandwich structure panels composed of 1.5" thick pvc-foam sandwiched between to .020 plates of aluminum held together by lots of gorilla glue (lots). We'll post more details on these panels later - the design is truly sick, they weigh around 20 pounds and can easily support over 200 pounds point-loaded each with less than a 1/4" of deflection; they're amazing and one of the things we are proudest of on our robot.

These aforementioned panels fall are held up by servos which realease them; they are then pulled down by gravity. The panels then are extended 12" in each dimension thanks to fold out flaps (look at the pics we have already posted and the videos to come to see how these fold out). The dimensions are about 46" by 44" and have an area of about 2000" each and can easily hold any robot with no tipping issues at all and room to spare. These panels lock into the chassis of our robot upon falling.

The 150 lb. gas springs (4) are located at the point closest to the panels in the front and farthest in the back (look at the silver piston mounts in the pics) and each have a 16" throw. They are reverse-mounted inside of the previously mentioned aluminum housings to create a piston design placing the weaker rod of the spring inside of the houing and allowing the stronger casing of the spring to extend down.

They are restrained via an internal locking mechanism that comes stock with the springs we chose. This pin extends beyond the top of the housing and is depressed by a lever/cap... Each lever/cap is pulled - thus depressing the pin and releasing the spring - by four bike cables which are pulled by a leadscrew system driven by a banebots motor attached to the inside of the frame. Each spring/cable is individually tuneable, so we can determine when each spring releases and in what order. That being said, we chose to have the front springs release a split-second earlier in order to allow the other robots to roll back against ourback rails to locate the robots.

As for the last question, yes it takes 10 people to depress them LOL. We fold up the panels on the field and let the springs stay extended and then depress them in the pits/practice field...

As a member of their eliminations alliance in UCF, I may be biased, but I've seen few ramps that compare to 180 SPAM. I can't find a picture right now, but it wasnt nicknamed the aircraft carrier by more than one person for nothing....

Hate to toot our own horn, but I was didn't fully realize the size of our ramps until one of the Martians did a 360 on top of us, remaining on for the 30 points.

I'd also like to cast a vote for Team 27, who has a huge, constant, flat ramp. If you have any ground clearance and some driver ability, you'll be able to make it on them. Plus, they've got a very effective roller gripper to go along with their ramp.

Team 93 also had impressive ramps. They were nice and easy to climb, being only about 2" tall, and it lifted reliably.

I was impressed with SPAM's ramps at UCF--wish we could've climbed those for a bit.

Of all of the ramps 1618 climbed at Palmetto, I'd say that my favorites were 900 and 1102--both nice and crazy wide, giving our driver plenty of fudge factor (though he was quite adept at getting the robot pointed right).

I gotta say 357.

Their ramps are perfectly flat (allowing ANYONE to get up) and have a smooth, powerful scissor jack. The ramps elevate perfectly straight up, leaving no chance of tipping whatsoever.

In fact, we were so impressed with them that in the semis at Philly, we were prepared to take as many incursion penalties as necessary to keep them from getting the other robots on!

469 - easy to get up on and wide enough for some elbow room
27 - same as 469's design just different colours (yeah i spelled colours that way :) )
503 - They are the Martian killers with those ramps, at GLR both of the martian teams laid waste to there awesome froggy power.
703 - Although they didnt get to show off they ramps too much at Western michigan, when those babies fold out you hear the call of the phoenix!

I normally don't pimp my team's own hardware, but I'm really a fan of 48's ghetto-functional Viagra Button-actuated ultrasteel ramps of doom. I enjoy watching them spring up and crash down to the ground every time they deploy. Whether this makes them some of the best ramps, I don't know, but they are certainly some of the most entertaining.

Now I cant help but boast our team's ramp. I'm pretty sure it's one of the largest ramp in the nation with an area of 45 sq. ft (half of them ramp, half of them platform) with 15.6 degress elevation. It's literally a portable parking lot and can fit 3 robots on it optimally.
And the nice thing about it is, we used no fancy material, just plain sheet metal with some teflon, stitched together with pop-rivets.

And amazing to watch. For those that didn't get the opportunity to see them in action, picture a forklift going from _] to \/ (angles are a bit steep, but they'll do) in about two seconds with a robot on its forks. Good for 30 points every time, assuming your wheels weren't too big or too low.

Not to brag or anything, im just really proud of our ramp. The entire frame is just 1x1 aluminium tube and sheet metal riveted too it. Oh and the lightening holes, totally student done. 9 degree incline with nearly 32 square feet of ramp space, the other bots ram into our arm (which will not move) and that stops them. The ramp itself is nearly 4 feet wide which means we can lift any robot (even the massive ones like 1718) with relative ease. Oh, and we have clocked our lift times at the 4-6 second range. Oh yes, one last thing, its all spring loaded when it deploys, gosh I love that boom it makes.

On the topic of other ramps I like, 245. maybe not the biggest or most reliable but very unique. We tossed around many possible ideas for lifters and a cam on the ground wasnt mentioned, kudos to the adambots for innovation.

469 is another one I really like, aside from the fact that it is like ours i admire them for fitting that size ramp on top of their swerve drive. All around Im impressed with their robot.

93 has another unique ramp but I dont really feel it is effective. In the elims it may be but in qualification rounds it is more a liability. Maybe if the panels were larger. Again,I say kudos for innovation.

And though their number escapes me, there was a robot at VCU that when deployed i almost thought that they were last years ramp on the field by accident. If anyone knows that number.

I like 1501's lifts a lot, they worked great, plenty big enough, consistent, and powerful.

As for the best ramp bot that I saw, 1203 had a LOT of space for 2 robots to climb up, plus little walls to guide and keep robots from falling off.

Here are our ramps (1102). I've seen better, but we designed these to easily guide a robot up and ensure that they don't fall off.
Any size robot will fit as long as they don't exede the bumper regulations. We actually played with a team that did :ahh: but they simply removed the protruding bumper and climbed just fine.

If a robot is not all the way up yet we can raise the ramp part for a little extra help.

At the Boilermaker regional there was a nice lift robot 1501. It lifted quickly and the platforms laid fat enough that virtually any robot could get on them. Lifted 12" two at a time.

What I think is the coolest thing about all of these ramp bots, is that there are so many, and you can often find many of the best still available when you get past the first half of the draft picks. It's always really interesting to see how they all step up. It also helps when they can play strong defense.:)
My personal favorites, from what I've seen, are 1501, 1555, 545, 870, 496, and 461. There are many others...I just can't think of them right now.:D

We loved your ramp. Bad luck that we both made elimination rounds in Detroit and Western Michigan and then got knocked out. You guys better kick some butt in Atlanta - especially since you borrowed one of our mentors for the trip!!!!

Massive - I like that :) . Much better than "wide load". The wide wheel base with the tank drive gave us a ton of stability when folks tried to push us, and allowed easier tank-drive turning so that we were more accurate in autonomous.

Anyway, I have to give credit to teams 27 and 469 for great.... platforms. Calling them ramps just don't do them justice.

Team 71 has remarkable ramps when you include their scoring ability - we were able to fit up them, and they have one on each side of their robot.

Officially, we lifted 18 robots above 15" in 10 qualifying matches... The two robots we didn't lift were unable to get on our ramps seeing as how they were disabled by FIRST and were stranded on the field or on fire... We also lifted 9 more robots for 30 pts each in the elimination rounds.

Now that everything is said and done, I thought it would be cool to open up this thread again for some final insight.

What were the best lifting robots of 2007? (In my opinion, lifting was better and more efficient than ramps - as long as they worked...)

190 looked like it did pretty well at nationals (besides winning it all) - those anti-rollback devices were really sweet.

71's ramps were amazing. Nuff said. They did the job, and were pretty fail proof. other teams that had similar designs also had great ramps.

If this is only ramps, I thought that 545's ramp was very good. We got up easily and it played a key role in the winning alliance at Long Island. If this includes lifts too, then I would put 1501 as one of the elite lifters this year with 1555 very close behind.

I may be a little biased, voting for my own team........ but I must say, SPAM had the biggest and baddest ramps out there on the Curie field, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were the largest in the entire dome. Nicknamed the "aircraft carrier," our team was actually joking about having our chasis drive out from underneath and climb itself.... but that would not qualify for the 30 point bonus. :)

although I did like the "air mattress" bot...... I can't remember which team it was, but it used the air mattress concept. pretty sweet.
