Just to tease everyone about the fierce competition at Davis/Sac - I've uploaded QF1.1 to SOAP. I know the file is very big and once I re-do the video sizes I'll get them up over the next few days.

Props to 100/997/1458 - they're an awesome alliance.

Re: 2007 Davis Sacramento Regional

Thanks for uploading QF Match 1.1. I really wish you could hear the crowd better though, because when Team 100 got knocked over, it was almost deafening.

I mean, talk about a very, very brutal match. Two bots knocked over, tons of ringers on the rack for the blue alliance, and bonus points for the blue alliance.

When the emcee said that Week 5 (more specifically, Davis) was probably the fiercest regionals, He was not kidding. It was an utterly amazing regional.

1351 took home the Johnson & Johnson Sportsmanship award. Special thanks to team 1280 for giving us a lift and the FemBots, team 692, for playing some awesome defense and eating pizza with us.

Team 1280's rachet system popped out after one heavy match and our robots didn't stay elevated. It's because they were too awesome in their defense against 852 and 701. Congrats to that alliance as well.

Also, thanks to team 115 for being awesome. Their robot was great to admire and their last qualification match with us against team 100 was also a real blast. That last second spoiler was certainly something to cheer about.

when we saw your bot and 692 going up i thought our day was over. then I could not believe my eyes when I saw two bots slowly falling down after the buzzer had gone off. we had a time fun playing you guys and hope to see next year.

Congrats to the winning alliance! 977,100,1458 you guys were awesome.

That was a feirce regional. It was so much harder than the Portland regional (week one) By the end, my brain was hurting. It was tough.

We won the Imagery Award (4th year in a row):D
Our mentor, Bill (Buzzy) Buskirk won the Woodie Flowers Award!:D
And we won the Chairmans Award!:D

One match i'd like to point out was our match against 2063 and 766 in qualifying. The second I found that we were against you, I thought we were doomed. As we were cued up, one of our allliance partners told us they wouldn't make it so I changed our strategy from a balance of defence and offence to 100% offence in hopes of getting enough tubes on to counter your inevitable 60 point ramp. Right before the game started, our alliance partner arrived and announced that thier robot would work fine. We still went with the offence strategy but it was a CLOSE game. we got a row of 5 whereas you got a row of 4 and a couple singletons. Halfway through the match, one of our trannies failed and we could hardly move so our driver somehow crawled our way around the feild and tried to get up our partner's ramp. We couldn't. Our other alliance partner cam and bumped us real hard and we only got the 15 extra points whereas our opponents got 30. We won that match 51-50.Good game guys, it was amazing.:D

I was wondering if anybody else would remember that. I think that was one of the funniest parts of Davis, 'cause after the announcer said that, everybody on my team that was in the pit at the time yelled at Bryant (the person blowing the bubbles).

You know those awards we were giving out? (pirate hats) I wasn't too involved in that but I did suggest that we give you a "blowing bubbles" Award because the randomness of it all. Did we eventually give you that one?

Thanks for noticing us. :) That match was really a high point for us, and though we didnt win, our team still went crazy. We were hopin to be paired with you guys in the eliminations, but I guess more teams noticed us than I thought. ( We were ranked in the 20's)

Also, I've said it once and I'll say it again, Thanks for the carrier plates. Without them our robot would not even be running. True Gracious Professionalism.

That alliance partner that ended up working was 115:D. I was scouting in the stands and had no info on the situation, so when that manipulator opened up, the whole team roared with excitement. Bumping you guys up and scoring 4 ringers made that match the highlight of that day for us. The only better match for us was the one where we faced 100 on Saturday morning.
By the way, we also had a column of 2 to go with that row, and it really did matter with that match being won by only 1 point.

Just another example of the awesome competition that was on display at this regional, very exciting, very action packed, and definitely a lot of fun for everybody.

And finally, congrats to 1359 on the awards, especially on the Chairman's Award.

Here are some pictures from Sacramento. I only chose to upload some of the better quality ones (I have plenty of others, about 160mb total of pictures + 2 short videos, which will be uploaded somewhere too)

Team 675 group picture, after finishing the Sacramento Davis Regional
Team 675's Engineering Inspiration award atop our team's flag (With the TH logo & 675 on it)
Me, throwing the goat while wearing the Engineering Award medal and holding the trophy
Team 675 with our Engineering Award, Team 100 with their Regional Winner award, and some Athenian Robotics Collective members
Team 675's Human Pyramid
Random sunset picture I got on the bus ride back from Davis

Re: 2007 Davis Sacramento Regional

On behalf of Team 1726, we would like to offer Teams 100, 997, and 1458 a huge congratulation for their victory at Davis. Those Quarter-Final matches were absolutely intense, and I don't think that there's ever been a closer match this year. After the loss, our team was rooting for you guys the whole way, just because you were absolutely awesome opponents and even greater teams. I honestly believed that all three teams deserved to win, especially 100. That display of GP at the end was astounding, and I was very surprised to hear that team 100 had not won a regional for many years.

By the way, Davis probably was, as the MC said, the most competitive of all of the regionals this year. It was definitely worth the 14 hour drive! :D

Edit: One more thing. Congrats to Team 1359 for winning the Chairman's award. As being part of the Chairman's award team for 1726, I can say that you guys deserved to win that as well. We came close, but hey, there's always next year. Good luck to all teams at Nationals. Hopefully I'll be there with our Vex team, Team 3495.

Another Edit: I almost forgot, thanks Team 100 for helping us with the high score during the regional qualifying rounds. I had no idea that we would be able to score 260 points like that!

Once again, awesome, awesome, regional. Thanks to all teams, sponsors, mentors, volunteers, and of course the UC Davis campus for holding such an awesome event!

couple things,
1: 1662's scouts were impressive, any team that can put up that much of a fight against a number 1 seed, after 5 minutes of deliberation in selection. has to be good
2. hey! we couldn't have let the number 1 seed win that easily
3: i didn't think it was much of a competition after that much

Ah well. Perhaps we can win some other strange/random award next year.

Man, nobody on my team knew we were going to Nationals until one of the Ref's said "Good luck in Atlanta". We all pretty much lost our minds at that point.

We've decided that as long as we don't finish dead last for our sect, that we've done something worthwhile.

Plus the buttons.

Oh god, the buttons.

Darn, that's a bit of a bummer. Our team would have loved to have seen you guys there, had we qualified as well. We'll be sending up our Vex team, and I believe that our members would have enjoyed your team's company.

Anyway, good luck with any other future projects your team might have. Here's hoping that we'll be able to see you guys again sometime soon!:)

FRC 1726 isn't going to Nationals, but FVC 3495 (Team Dark Matter) will be there watching and participating in the Vex competition. I hope we'll be able to see at least one of the SAC teams in the final matches, after FVC is done for the day.

Glad you were able to meet one of our parents/mentors in person. Mr. Forbes was there taking tons of pictures, as well as providing lots of valuable insight for our team. He also seemed to take to the FIRST credo pretty well; GP is also one of my favorite, if not my favorite, aspects of FIRST. I love being able to help out others, and it also feels great knowing that if you need to fix your bot, there will be several teams willing to help, with at least one of them being your opponents in a previous or upcoming match. I guess rivalry between teams only really exists for 2 minutes and twenty seconds at a time.:D

Correction, 2 minutes and 15 seconds at a time.

And that is so true.

At SVR, 675 hit 1868 pretty hard into a wall and we're pretty sure, damaged them. Right after the match, I went over to 1868's pit to help them out -- they didn't need repair because of us, but for their drive system from an earlier issue. I pointed some stuff out, they fixed it, then I was on my way.

I've also showed up at random team's pits and asked if they've needed help before. It never hurts to ask!

Re: 2007 Davis Sacramento Regional

Hehe, I forget which team it was, but at the beginning of the day they had all their electronics all sitting on the work bench instead of in the robot where it usually is. They were trying to bolt down their electronics panel later in the day and one of the students stripped the bolt end off.

It seemed like they had been through a lot of stress, and they didn't have any more of the bolt they needed. I walked up (still in my volunteer shirt) and asked them calmly if I could take the broken bolt. Then I walked over to my old pit (701 alumni here) right next door and rummaged through one of the bolt boxes until I found a couple of similar size. I handed them off and they seemed a little shocked.

You'd be suprised how many teams aren't aware of the comradare in the pits, especially rookie teams. I see lots of signs up in the pits, I think it would be great if teams started advertising their willingness to help other teams in a more concrete way. And it looks good for the judges eh?

There were "issues" with the field internet connection. All the UC Davis IT guys were off for "Ceasar Chavez Day" so we couldn't find our way out through the firewall on Friday or Saturday. We couldn't send results using the field software and so had to use the alternate e-mail method.

Friday results went out Friday night. The Final results were sent off Saturday about 11pm -after teardown and dinner for those loading the truck. OK we really took our time enjoying the dinner (Thanks Corey!)

So maybe the guy who is supposed to post them was too busy keeping fields running on Saturday and decided to spend some time with his family on Sunday? Or maybe he spent Sunday trying to get home after weeks on the road? I know I spent a significant amount of time with Field Tech support on both days. If other events spent the same amount of time they would have been pretty tied up and frankly posting the results would have been pretty low on my priority list in comparison to keeping fields running.

If instant results were that important to you, you should have been there.:p

I was there, and figuring out the match results and standings in the pits is pretty difficult with the new display (compared to last year)....when the standings reaches the end, it resets at the top and immediately scrolls down, so it takes some time and effort to catch the top ones. And I never did figure out how to read the match results.....

Maybe the problem is that my eyes aren't what they used to be :)

The ranking screen did have a problem, especially if you were #1 seed. There was no real results screen except the "ticker" at the bottom. You never knew if the team above you in rank had a better W/T/L record or just more QPs. On earlier versions you could adjust the speed of the display, but that disappeared in the version used this past weekend. The other list was the upcoming matches.

It was definitely not your eyes, at least mine had the same trouble.

Did anyone else notice that they added the match # and a real time clock to the main scoring display on the big screen? They really are listening at FIRST and 4FX and we often don't give them enough credit for what has been achieved to date in our efforts to "correct" percieved problems.

Yeah it was weird. The ring scores and bonus on the screen did not add up to be the total scores at the bottom of the screen. But didn’t know what they add to it. So they added the match number?

Sounds like us, 1960! Thursday was a little blurry as we had some "minor" last minute repairs to make! (they took all day).

I would like to thank all the teams that provided us with support. I constantly sent kids out begging for parts, pieces, programmers, mechanical advice and more. They NEVER came up short thanks to all the great teams at Davis! :)

Our team came up with a new one this year:

Ah yes, I remember that, I almost laughed out loud when you guys did that, I was right in the middle of that exchange.

We had our own chants, took them from the rallies back at school too:

We totaly stumped 1359 and 995 with that one!

We have hats! We have a hat of the same design as your's but it's black and has a jolly roger on it. We also gave out pirate hats as our awards.

-to team 100- message me with your mailing info and we could send you one of those awards, we tried to give it to you at the regional, but we must have forgotten. :p

No love for a "Blowing Bubbles" award? ;)

I have to admit, most of my other team didn't find Davis as fun as SVR, I thought it was better. Especially with 1351 and 1072 (and me) joining in on the spirit chant then switching sides randomly, plus all the dancing.

Hehe, I dont know exactly where it came from but, if I remember correctly, my team and 955 were having those spirit fights at PNW also.

It's been in use in summer camps since the inception of summer camps.

I liked Davis a lot better than SVR it was a lot friendlier and more fun environment (and we won... that helps)

Ha. I do agree. Davis is more of a goofy regional therefore it's much more fun. SVR is a bit more competitive. The dancing was incredibly fun, such as the kickline. And we randomly switched sides for the spirit chanting because we realized we were chanting against our alliance partners for the finals. Still good fun.

The bar at the bottom of the screen may or may not be for the same match as the Final Score. They are independent of each other. Once the scoring table figured this out we tried to make sure they stayed the same, but sometimes we goofed or we had to go ahead and change the lower bar to get set up for the next match.

The lower bar has a "tab" on the top that indicates the match number. The number on the right of the tab indicates how many seconds are left in that portion of the match. It starts at 15 for automode and counts down to zero, when telemode starts it goes to 120 and counts down from there.

The Final Score screen reflects what went into the database for that match. It also says what match the score is for. If the scores on the bar and the Final screen are different, then check the match numbers, they should be different as well. Be sure to include the effects of any penalties as these are not included in the scoring bar but are in the Final Score.

It makes perfect sense once you understand it all.

Anybody find high quality video of the finals+quater finals? The one on robotics.nasa.com is the low quality webcast feed.

I'm slowly working on getting our video going, not sure of the quality (my son is new at videotaping), but should be an interesting perspective at least. I think we have all five qf1 matches, and the finals.

SOAP 108 has the quarter and semi finals up there now, they are pretty good.
WE should have ours up by Friday? maybe Saturday... but those are higher quality than the ones on SOAP.

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same thing. But I was talking about the final-score screen's sum score. The screen listed ring scores and bonus scores then have 2 large number at the bottom to indicate the sum. The sum wasn't what the list add up to be.

The two large numbers at the bottom with the array of dots in between are the part of the Final Score screen you should ignore. That is the "lower bar" and is used during a match to display the rack score real time. This score does not include bonuses or penalties. But it is the most visually prominent, so people often topok it to be the "real" score.

Also if the guy at the scoring table is not paying attention then it might not be displaying the rack score for the match that is being displayed at the top in the Final Score screen. It was easy to advance the lower bar to the next match or to have it up while trying to correct a score from a previous match (fumble fingered refs  ). This would result in results from two different matches being displayed simultaneously. The imporant screen is the Final Match Score screen. That is the one that has the official score for the match.

There obviously needs to be some human engineering on this part of the scoring system. The bright side is that no matter what, we will need a new scoring display next year. The scoring and field management system were so much more reliable than last year that I will gladly put up with a few minor complaints this year. Next year when 4FX has more time to focus on "peripheral" issues things should be better yet.

I put those up. I have more it just took me while to parse and just as long to upload them to SOAP. Some are being stubborn - but they'll get there. I have most of Saturday's matches parsed, but I'm stuck at school for Open House (it is my job afterall) and can't get back to it until tonight.

Hang in there, we'll get them up.

I've never dealt with SOAP before,
would they mind if we put up matches that were not from the big screen?
Because our scouting team is almost done with the matches they video taped, and I personally like the field overview that they did more then the big screen...
it is easier to see everything that is going on

We are now uploading our own movies on our website, found here. The finals are almost all up, and the quarter-finals are next. Also, we will add qualification matches 52, 55 and 60. Hope these videos are helpful, because I haven't seen the finals anywhere else!
