Discs Anyone?
I have been thinking about how the last two years of scoring pieces have been everyday items that might be used in a sport. Balls cover many games, innertubes could represent a variety of items including horseshoes. The only real sports equipment that I can think of that this does not cover are darts, frisbees, and possibly a parbolic ball, such as the football. I will rule out the football because it is still a ball. Next, darts seem a bit too dangerous for FIRST. That leads me to believe that a disc like object would be ideal for next years game. What do you think? Tell me your opinions on next years game.

Re: Discs Anyone?
They used giant floppys during the first few years. But lets not start this new game thread, theres already to many of them. (But i expect there to be robots hanging off the ground next year.)

Re: Discs Anyone?
Didn't they hang about 3 years ago?

Re: Discs Anyone?
One of these years, the game piece will be an actual red herring.
Helena: Riddle? Riddle. So have you thought of an answer yet? Gryphon: You can''t pass. I give up, I think, no wait, wait... Fine. What's the answer? Helena: Okay. It's a herring. Gryphon: But a herring isn't green. Helena: You can paint it green. Gryphon: But a herring doesn't hang on a wall. Helena: You can nail it to a wall. Gryphon: But a herring doesn't whistle. Helena: Oh, come on. I just put that in to stop it from being too obvious. |

Actually, I think I heard the herring myth on a different thread a while back.

Re: Discs Anyone?
Coming up with novel game pieces is hard. As far as space figures go, there are spheres, prisms, toroids, and pyramids. Been there, done that. We've done balls in various sizes, from 7" to 30". I'm still holding out for the game that goes for something smaller... think golf balls or baseballs. Littering the field with tiny debris will demand much more finesse in driving, and could change the general trend that robot designs have taken in recent years.

Re: Discs Anyone?
Juggling robots? how about a robot riding a unicycle? (we've actually discussed how to do this at our house! talk about a wierd family)
Seems to me that big foam cubes are the next likely game piece....something square....maybe fuzzy dice? |
Re: Discs Anyone?
I am surprised that dlavery would post so early, not to mention the fact that it is on a thread I started. I know this is off topic but this is an honor. Does he even know anything about next year's game yet?
|
Re: Discs Anyone?
He's probably scouting ideas right now...watch what you say! or your robot will have to juggle red herring next year

It will be creepy, scary, and eerily satisfying for the symbolic revenge over the stresses of each year's game. |

In teleoperation Dave juggles red herrings, and robots circle around him hoping to catch them ... (not sure how scoring would work?) |

Re: Discs Anyone?
I think it'll be a water game...lol...
Maybe we'll have to save Dave before he drowns a herring. That seems like fun. But animal control might have a problem with it. lol. |
Re: Discs Anyone?
This is quite interesting... It was just making me wonder if we might get a clue really early like we did last year? Perhaps one that actually relates to the game?
|
Re: Discs Anyone?
If the game piece is a redhearing I don't wanna be in the pit crew and have to clean those robots off!
|
Re: Discs Anyone?
Just curious... Of the past years, how many FRCs have had actual gamepieces? (i.e. balls, tubes, tetras, etc.)

Re: Discs Anyone?
Hockey? Using Hockey Pucks?
|
Re: Discs Anyone?
Next year's game will definitely require bipedal robots walking up and down staircases while being escorted by lovely young women.

"This years game will be played in a 50' x 26' ball pit where teams of robots must sort thorugh multi-colored balls, choosing only their alliance color, and placing them in bins" :p **wonders if dave (and the GDC) ever really gets some ideas from these threads** |

Re: Discs Anyone?
disks are too much like rings. Pool Noodles are a better option that has been passed around the rumor mills over the years.

Re: Discs Anyone?
Out of any change to next years game. I want different flooring. Yes carpet is cheap but lets try something new. Some teams have the same drive train year after year, and there is def nothing wrong with this, if you find something that works stick with it. I would just like to see something else maybe like astro turf or grass or anything please dave save me

Re: Discs Anyone?
We can always go back to corn. Only this time we can use those giant genetically engineered corn kernels that are the size of car tires.

Re: Discs Anyone?
^ maybe gravel for the surface?

Re: Discs Anyone?
I've always thought PVC batons with end caps would make a good game piece. The game could be designed so that teams can score points easier by gathering them up off the floor into a bin and depositing them somewhere, but score more by manipulating individual batons precisely and scoring in some other way. Largish end caps (~twice the radius of the baton) could make it so that they are not too much of a pain to pick up, but still a challenge.

Re: Discs Anyone?
Why only use one type of game piece? I'm surprised there isn't more talk about using two different types of game pieces. I.E. pool noodles AND inner tubes, or something similar to that.

Re: Discs Anyone?
what about trashing the idea of balls/rings/noodles/objects in general...
imagine an obstacle course |
Re: Discs Anyone?
I'm positive! We'll have to make robots that self balance on two wheels!!!! And climb up stairs to juggles herrings into a goal in the air.
Its perfect. |
Re: Discs Anyone?
STOP GIVING DAVE IDEAS!!!
...please? Some of these ideas are just crazy enough that he might actually consider them...just the thought of that scares me. Despite what I just said, I'm sure it wont be long until I'm offerin more crazy ideas... :D |
Re: Discs Anyone?
The game should be something that could be put to practical use in real life, and requires teamwork (much like this year's game). Rack n' Roll is great because you NEED a defensive robot, you NEED and offensive robot, and you NEED a bonus point robot. Anything else, and you aren't getting far.
