What is your team up to at your hotel?

What is your team doing to have fun at your hotel???

Teams at the Marquee, seem to be enjoying dropping objects from the top floor into the construction area.... 47 floor drop... Security has increased it's presence in the past 30 minutes... so teams at the Marquee... i would stop tomorrow

yeahhhh scouting, the gross couples in rooms by themselves (lets not go there...), i WISH they would let me play guitar hero, and they have a wii but they wont let any of the girls us it : (

weve also been riding the elevator up and down to the 72nd floor and back in glass elevators....it's funner than it sounds trust me : )

Well Team 102 enjoys throwing/dropping ice and soda off the balcony... obviously this is our team having fun. Tonight the drivers will be soaking their feet in a nice hott bath because they are so sore from all the walking =]

And of course, there is the oh so awesome PARTY tomorrow after the competition!!! But that's not at the hotel as we all know haha. We have the fun OUTSIDE the hotel :)

Hope everyone is having a GREEEEEEEAT time here in Atlanta

our team stayed at the hotel in our down time our team usually gathered in front of starbucks and played various card games as far as dropping items from the balcony one of our team members accidentally dropped there ipod from the sixth floor down to the GL level some kid tried to take it but he got it back as far as the security it kind of ticked me off that on the last night they said that we couldn't have our team meeting in the hall on our floor when we were the only team on the floor after we been having it there in the same spot for the last 4 nights

We are very lucky. One of those bouncy balls landed not in the construction area but right next to us in the lobby.
I'll let all you bright students calculate the damage that can be done by solid objects dropped from great heights. The Marquis was filled with FIRST students and volunteers.

We stayed at the Westin. We enjoyed taking the Scenic elevator to the observation level on the 72nd floor. (free to hotel guests) Other than that we also enjoyed waiting 20 min to catch a regular elevator in the morning!:ahh:

Re: What is your team up to at your hotel?

I spent most of my nights trying to print off our pictures for the FIRST book submission. Night 1: Brought the printer back to the hotel, I had everything ready, but the wall plug half of the printer power cord was left in the pits. Night 2: Again, I had everything ready and this time the printer was all there, except for the driver disc. Night 3: Awww yeah... I got everything printed off, but just barely ran out of photo paper.

Much fun... not. I did get a chance to swim on Firday night and I was going to make a funny 648 commercial that involved a man thong with our logo on it and some members of 107 but I never got around to doing it.

We stayed at the Hyatt

the lead mentor and some od the seniors went back and forth trying to prank eachother.
And a little bit of socializing with other teams and guests at the hotel.
And we also went to work out in the weight room.

As for the last security issues....we where also told we could not meet in the hotel because a few rooms had complained. After asking what rooms, the security guard named the rooms, but the funny part was.....they all belonged to us :yikes: O well. It was fun tho

We stayed at the Sleep Inn. Each night, our team picked a hotel room and basically acted stupid. We played card games, watched TV, painted nails, surfed the 'net, etc. Lots of team bonding...:p

I'll let all you bright students calculate the damage that can be done by solid objects dropped from great heights. The Marquis was filled with FIRST students and volunteers.

Assuming that the bouncyball weighs a tenth of a pound (or so, .05kg to be precise), dropped from the very top of the atrium to the very bottom...

67.13 Newtons.

That is (assuming I remember correctly) four times the force of a golfball dropped from one meter.

So yeah. It'd hurt. Because golf balls dropped from one meter hurt. But this would hurt more.

EDIT: Whoops! For some reason 40 * 4 = 60 in my brain

but basically it's a lot of force. And would hurt. Even if you take off the 2m or so from the height (assuming it hits a 2m tall person on top of the head) it's still going to hurt.

edit:

that's 2.7m/s, or .1mph.

edit (yes again):

It will take 52 seconds to hit the ground, too.

edit (whee):

I did some more math

here's the full thing:
"A bouncyball dropped from the top of the atrium at the Mariott Marquis, assuming it weighs .05kg, Will hit the ground with a force of 67.13N. The ball falls at a speed of 2.78m/s and will take 52 seconds to hit the ground. Assuming optimal conditions, that's going to be a 132m rebound at 90% effeciency. The ball, dropped from the 47th floor, will get back up to the 42nd floor."

...My cousin used to borrow my N64 for Latin trips when he was in high school and I was like 10. Now I understand why... Anyways we played Halo at one of the guys' rooms. It was actually kind of fun. But I'm not a big X-box guy... But at the IRI one of the people brought a Wii and we had a little Wii Party... Unfortunately there were only 2 controllers, but it was still fun!
DK, SSB, ...(on 64) > Wii > PS/Xbox

First off someone tries to find or set up an internet connection for the team(you know, the important thing) but most of us have PSP's or DS's, and a lot of us just play cards if there is nothing else to do...

Seems a little off to me....

Acceleration of the ball would be 9.8 m/s/s.

I've never been there.... so 47 floors I'm assuming is 705 ft (15*47), which is ~215 m. So, integrating the velocity shows that it hits 215m at 6.6 seconds.

I'm betting my guesstimation of height is off... but it's a closer approximation of time at least.

I'm too tired to finish.... I'll let Otaku take over from here and come up with the energy; goodnight everyone.

EDIT: forgot terminal velocity. It hits 54m/s after 5.5s and has traveled 148m, leaving 67 to go. So add 67m / 54m/s and you get a total of 6.75 s at 54m/s (my old calc, physics and chem teachers would kill me for all the approximations and random rounding).

I thought it over (and talked to our team leader who is also the freshman physics teacher and teaches this stuff) and you've got a point. I didn't take into account the acceleration and such. The Atrium is 147m tall, 47 stories, that's just about 3.1m/story.

I'll dig up my freshman science notebooks and look up the formulas.

Also, I didn't take into account wind resistance because I do my physics calculations in happy go lucky fun time physics land. Where resistance is nonexistant.

Okay, now that I know the real height of 147m. It would hit after 5.48 seconds traveling 53.67m/s (which is only .33m/s from terminal velocity).

I don't need to calculate the energy on that, I know it's gonna hurt :D

EDIT: Gotta agree with ya about resistance..... World would be so much easier if we just forgot about that :D

I just used my ti-84 to be honest

I integrated the acceleration of 9.8m/s/s to get a velocity as 9.8(x) m/s.

I then graphed the integral of that (position) and just saw where it intersected a horizontal line that was the distance traveled. That gave the time to travel that distance; From there the speed was as easy as putting that time into the velocity equation above.

It's all really basic calculus. So, if you haven't taken it yet, don't worry; you'll get it really fast once you do.

Then after things settle down and its just the real close group in a room... (no, i know what your all thinking and NO).... we play Halo till like 1/2/3 in the morning, and somehow manage to wake up the next day...

The kids? who knows.

The mentors pretty much spend the entire evening eating dinner, figuring out the next day's schedule/tasks that need to be done, scouting, and formulating pick lists. Not much time for play :)

Although that would make an awesome YouTube video and Mythbusters episode! :D Sounds to me like there's as much fun in the hotels as the actual event. We aren't paying to go this year, but I'm hoping we play our way in. Last student year for me, and I want to enjoy Championships before converting into a college NEM.
