FIRST Book: "FIRST"

During Paul Gudonis' openning ceremonies speach, he held up two books about FIRST. We all know about the 1st book: Behind the Design. But, he held up a 2nd book, being published by Palo Alto Press, simply called "FIRST."

I haven't heard of it, nor have there been any rumors about it. Has anyone found a source for this book, or even have any generic information about it? He hinted that it talks about some of the people/volunteers involved in the program.

Thanks,

BEN

The book "FIRST - Chronicles of Inspiration, Competition, and Changing the World" is available at the Championship in the FIRST store (C-108, located in the main hallway outside the pits).

This book tells the stories of FIRST & how the program impacts the lives of the participants. It is a gorgeous book & very inspiring.

For those of us not at the championship, is there anywhere else we can purchase this book? I looked online at the FIRST Store and I didn't find anyting about it. It sounds like another great read. Thanks,

BEN

As of now, it looks like the only location to purchase the book is at the Championship.

Since FIRST owns the copyright to the book, one would suspect that the book will be available through FIRST after the Championship.

The FIRST store has a website, I wrote it down last year but I am not there this year to write it down. Maybe someone can write it down next time they are by the pits?

Does any know the price of the FIRST book?
I can actually "Call-A-Friend" at the Championship to pick one up for me!

Re: FIRST Book: "FIRST"

There was a lady who came to Cal Games last October writing a book about FIRST. She interviewed some of us and talked to me about my experience and the Cal Game Awards.

I am eagerly waiting to see if this is the book she was working on.

If it is, I am willing to pay someone back if they can get a copy for me from Atlanta.

If you look at the footer on FIRST's site, they now list the link for their store!

Has anyone had any luck locating it? I really want to pick one up but was far too busy to stop in the store in Atlanta. I ordered the Behind the Design book and can't wait to add this one to the collection.

One of my friends down in Atlanta try to get a copy for me on Saturday but could not find it or they sold out of them.

The www.logoloc.com/first site has no reference or item about the book.

My mother bought this book when I asked her to buying the Behind the design book, and I asked her to return it, maybe I made the wrong decision to not keep that one. =(

Re: FIRST Book: "FIRST"

Team 177 was given a copy of the book at The Championship event. When I visited their hotel and was told they got a copy of "the FIRST book" I was excited to get a chance to look through "Behind the Design." Instead, I found that the book was indeed a copy of "FIRST".

The book is essentially a collection of history, interviews, and impact of the FIRST program. There are many photos of robots and participants from the 2006 season, as well as detailed information about a number of teams in all the different FIRST program levels.

The book is oversized, so is intended to be a coffee table book, but is extremely text based. Despite this, there is lots of whitespace, so if one were to read it cover to cover there would be lots and lots of page flipping.

Since I was in a hurry to go out to dinner and already knew a lot about FIRST the book didn't hold my interest for long, but it would probably make an excellent gift for an interested grandparent or mentor.

i remember Ed Paterson bought the book from the FIRST store, he was in front of me in the line as i was buying one of those volunteer t-shirts

the book is a whopping $49.99

but it could be worth it if your planing on starting a new team or want to get people interested in FIRST

First was mentioned in the class I took on submitting for the FIRST: Behind the Design book. It sounds like a really interesting read. :)

This book is an amazing resource for people that are wanting to start teams. I have shown it to a few friends at Columbia and got an amazing response. or just help their FIRST withdrawl, there are so many people mentioned it is nearly impossible not to know someone.

Re: FIRST Book: "FIRST"

This book, as previously mentioned, was discussed a little bit in the FIRST:Behind the Design entry forum at Championships. According to Vince, it is more or less a compilation of essays of a sort, describing all the attributes of FIRST teams. He said while the one book is about the design, this one is about the stories. I think it might be more of a FIRST inspirational thing; it will help new teams get some ideas and show each other that we all go through some pretty interesting experiences and difficulties to manage our programs and design and build a robot. I think it might help everyone reminisce on their beginnings and appreciate how far FIRST has been able to take this.:)

The only other thing I know for sure about it, is that it is not published by Rockport Publishing, the company that publishes the Behind the Design book.

Well, it is on the front page now. I think we need to work with them on their page editing though... They misspelled the name of the organization they're trying to sell product for...

Re: FIRST Book: "FIRST"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks like Gunn's 2006 robot on the cover(FRC 192).

They probably got a picture of it at Cal Games.

Having been within three feet of both the book and 192's 2006 robot, I can say that you are correct.

Re: FIRST Book: "FIRST"

Just for my personal curiousity, but how many books are in a case (24?) and why would someone want to buy a case? I'm guessing give-a-ways or to resell them...

Re: FIRST Book: "FIRST"

I bought a copy and it is an amazing read. I highly reccomend buying a copy because it truly reveals what FIRST is all about. It's worth every penny.
