Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Mark your calendars for the 8th annual BattleCry!! This year will again be a 48-team, 2-day event at WPI. The date is Fri/Sat, 15-16 Jun. Registration opens online (www.wpi.edu/+battlecry) precisely at 0800EDT on 1 May (Tue). Be sure to register early, prior years have filled to capacity within 30 minutes of registration opening. Your $350 registration gets you all the normal BattleCry goodies:
It also gets you into both the Fri and Sat special mini-robot and human player games and guarantees your team's entry into the elimination rounds (16 final alliances instead of 8). As usual, low cost on-campus dorm space is available for over-nighting as well as reduced fare local hotels. Expect some special guest appearances as well as some potential forthcoming game changes... More info can be found at www.wpi.edu/+battlecry and you can watch last year's match results and video. Be sure to check out last year's wrap video for "the best event of the year" at, immediately following the announcement of the winning alliance: Saturday Final Match/Wrap Video/Awards Also view opening videos and human player and driver skills challenges: If you wish to volunteer, please contact us at battlecry@wpi.edu, it helps us to better plan accordingly than if you just show up! -Chris BattleCry Production Manager CRUD Name, Weiner |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Hopefully I'll be able to make it down from the middle-of-nowhere to go to BattleCry this year. Last year's competition was incredibly intense, and with at least two National Champion robots likely to be there, this year should be even better. I can't wait to see what teams sign up when registration goes live next week.
|
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
For those of you that don't know what CRUD is...........it can only be described as fast paced and fun. I just wish I remembered my CRUD name:confused:
Looking forward to BC8...... |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
If there's any interest in having a NEMO (Non-Engineering Mentor Organization) meeting at BattleCry, please contact me. If I get enough people interested I will try to arrange a meeting during Saturday.

Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Team 177 will be back at battlecry to reunite with their championship partners, 190! Cant wait to see everyone.
In my opinion, Battlecry is one of the best-run off season events. WPI and 190 do a great job hosting, I cant wait! |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
228 will be back this year for yet another wicked awesome BattleCry@ WPI competition! Our team always looks forward to this event, as Kim said, it is one of the best competitions of the year. With their annual twist to the game, their proposed change would be an awesome addition to the game, much as the \"pendulum\" was at last year\'s event! :p

Any word on the registration form? It still says Stand By.
CRUD is pretty sweet, but I like Grady's games better. |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Been going to the Event since it started, can't wait to see what twists kenny and the staff put on this years game. Any word if Rick will be involved this year?

Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
What about the teams (like us) that filled out the survey last year? I know we should be able to register starting 2 days ago, but this is the first notice I've seen about BattleCry. In the past years, I've received the email announcing it, but I have not received anything.
There was an issue last year after submitting the online form where it just displayed an error. But after sending a message to WPI, I got a reply from the BattleCry staff that they did receive the info. I hope the message is just delayed... I don't want to miss out opportunity to register! We're 7 year BC@WPI veterans, and don't to miss out on the 8th! |

Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
We are looking forward to registering (I still do not see the forms).
This will be our 8th BattleCry! If any team near Windsor Locks CT is interested in sharing a ride we are booking a bus to take the bulk of our team Saturday Morning. Its a big bus and may have as many as 30 extra seats. You can contact me at billpease@mac.com |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
BC7 veterans, do not fret! There were some unfortunate delays in getting the early-registration form up, but it should be online shortly. All of the teams that qualify for early-reg should receive an email from BattleCry Ops once everything is fully verified.
As Andy has mentioned, you certainly won't want to miss this year's event! |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
We are trying to get our costs figured for this event....
Does anyone have an estimate for the price of the dorm rooms? |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS EVENT!!!!!!!
This is my favorite FIRST event out of all of the ones I have been to. The atmosphere there is so energetic, not to mention the relaxed feeling in the pit not having to worry about inspections :p ... Hope to see you all there! Jacob |

I just noticed last year's history page on the BattleCry website doesn't have any of the awards or Finals info. Also I'd love to have video of the final match of the finals if its available.

I just searched the forums for "wicked awesome" and this thread showed up on top.
Should I be surprised? Probably not. Team 166 is glad to be coming back... for the 8th year :D |

Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
The ringers will be placed by the referee between autonomous and operator control. Also note that the bonus ringers are RINGERS, not KEEPERS.
|
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Now that the change to the game has been officially released, I can talk about it. ;)
I honestly cannot wait for BattleCry@WPI, as now the autonomous portion of the game is finally getting the respect it deserved. Now, with their new "vertical row" addition to the game, one alliance can more or less own the rack in autonomous. If they are able to score one keeper on either side of the rack, the longest row the opposing alliance can get is only three tubes long! IMHO, this will have two interesting effects on the game: it will be easier to start "growing" rows as now you have more freedom on where to place your first teleoperated tube (supposing that you scored in autonomous), as well as increasing the importance of spoilers to the game. If wicked awesomeness could be could exist as a tangible noun, we'd have to look no further than BattleCry@WPI to find it. :D |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Comparing the two approaches we've seen so far to enhance autonomous (Battlecry & IRI), it's really hard for me to say which I prefer. The 15 point bonus of IRI's approach gives you an instant point boost, and does not give one alliance a distinct advantage over controlling the game. Using the BC rules, scoring a keeper becomes a paramount factor in determining the game if only one alliance does it, as it promotes them to expand their rows vertically and locks teams into specific sections of the rack for their scoring, which is something we started to see at Nationals. While I'm sure this was bound to happen with the level of defense people from NE are going to play, a single keeper in autonomous is now worth 8 instant points, and very quickly, that 8 multiplies. I eagerly anticipate the high-level of play that this will promote, I worry for alliances that will be unable to cap during autonomous in qualifiers and be at a disadvantage. Nevertheless, I can't wait to see the elimination rounds :D .
I guess 177 better hurry over to RAGE's practice facility and get working on our auto... PS: What happened to diagonal rows? :-p |

Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
My gut reaction to this change isn't good. I think it's going to change the game dynamics drastically. It places much more emphasis on defense and lifting. It cuts down on rack potential dramatically.
Teams are not going to try and score near their home zone anymore, instead, they'll try for the outer edges of the rack. If two allied teams are successful in placing keepers, then all they have to do is play defense the rest of the match. Large rows aren't going to build up because, well, you own two columns. As long as I keep you from getting any lifting points, or really doing anything effectively for that matter, I'll be in pretty good shape to win. |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Quote:
I also don't see how this change will make lifting more prominent. Many times this season, I have seen alliances score literally nothing on the rack and still win the match through bonus points (my own team included). However, because the other alliance couldn't score more than 60 points on the rack, they lost. If an alliance with a good tube scorer with an autonomous can score on the rack, they are that much closer to beating a ramp robot with two "base-bots" on their team. Quote:
|
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
I personally think that this change to autonomous adds a ton of value to the "scatter tubes on the rack and then ramp" strategy (basically the strategy that 177, 968 & 190 used to win the championship).
I expect that with more time to play with their bots, many teams will have added autonomous scoring ability. Strategically placing a few more rings after auto will ensure that the opposing alliance can't score enough with tubes to beat the 60 bonus points in this format. Ramps will be much more key to winning than they were under the "normal" Rack & Roll rules (and they were pretty important before). I do not, however, agree with Ogre's assessment that this is a bad thing. It is just different. You may have to adjust your strategy, but that is the whole point of rule changes that have typically been made at Battlecry in the past. In reality, the best winning strategy this year (scatter tubes, defend, then ramp) just gets more powerful, so it doesn't really change the game that much. You still need ramps, climbers, tube scorers & defenders. Should be a fun event. RAZ |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
I think the rule change is fine. In the regular season, I only saw a few instances with an alliance scoring 2 keepers, and none more than 2 spiders apart. One keeper limits an alliance to a 128 point row of seven, much more than enough to counteract a ramp. Sure there may be a few instances where this will limit an alliance signifigantly, but I'd estimate this will happen only 3-5 times in the entire competition. An alliance with two robots that can score autonomously on the corners consistantly and beat opponents to it would probably do very well even without this bonus
|
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
OK... Here's a logistical question. What happens if the robot that scores the keeper (lets say in the middle... this is most common) 's base is very near the rack. Could this prevent the ref from putting on the bonus tube on the bottom?
[CheesyASCIIart] (I'm getting good at this) Code:
So that the robot is blocking the bottom leg. Jacob |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
As far as I know, our team is third on the "waiting list". I'm trying to plan the logistics of the event for our team, so I'm wondering how likely it is that we'll actually compete. Does anyone know whether it's probable or not?

Are the camera numbers going to be supplied, or do we have to play children's guessing games like at the Championship and Regionals? I agree that this rule change makes autonomous more important. It somehow ruins the "purity" of the game by having a human "adjusting" the field between modes, but it is probably the best way to do it without major work. If it was built into the original game I'm sure a more "robotical" method would have been designed. And to answer whytheheckme, you back up v-e-r-r-r-r-y carefully:) . |

Another question about the bonus ringers. Will they be keepers that can't be spoiled or regular ringers that can be spoiled?

If anyone is teamless and staying over night between friday evening and saturday, I seem to need to get a hotel room, and I would love to have someone to share with. If anyone is interested, send me a PM or an email (theatregirl1122@gmail.com) (I need to room with a girl, though. My mother is paying for me this time around, so she makes the rules)

I am also looking for a couch or room split (or something similar) for at least Friday night, perhaps Saturday as well if there's demand. Gender is irrelevant (to me, at least). Hit me with a PM if you're interested.

Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Just hoping here, is anyone going to BattleCry via Boston? My train arrives that morning at South Station, and I'm hoping to find someone to hitch a ride with instead of, well, getting on yet another train. (Granted, a one-hour ride is nothing compared to the two tenish-hour rides before it, but still.)

Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Hello,
Just wondering how the autonomous bonus will be applied if both alliances score keepers in the same vertical row? It would be amazing to see this situation occur. RAZ |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
Quote:
;) Roger kind of touched on this one, with no answer: Quote:
How about this question: What happens if two keepers from the same alliance are scored on the same column? Is the alliance pretty much gypped and only gets one bonus ring? My guess is that these will be addressed at the event. All of them are pretty unlikely except for the robot blocking the leg question. 2 cents. Jacob |

Yeah, I'd be amazed too. Quote:
I tell you what, whytheheckme, you make sure you get your robot to do your situation, and I'll get my robot to do me and Rob's. Let's really give the ref's some headaches. (But don't tell WPI so to give them a heads up.) |
Re: Announcing BattleCry@WPI 8!
I've made it all the way to Boston South Station now. I'm not having good luck with trains this trip (four hours late leaving Columbia, five hours late getting to DC, getting on a Metro train that conked out a few stops from where I was to meet a friend, a less-than-sleep-inducing spot on the Regional to Boston that I nearly missed on account of a slow Metro trip back to Union Station), but I'm hoping the commuter train to Worcester will be kinder to me.
I'm officially ready to Rack 'n Roll (as soon as I dig out my closed-toe shoes). |

Finalists were (I think): 40, 121, 562 I have all the alliance pairings if anyone wants. |
