Arizona Offseason Events

I was wondering if there are any events in Arizona?

I don't know of any FRC events, but Carl Hayden (842) is hosting an underwater robotics competition. I believe that team 1726 was planning on building one for this competition, but I'm stuck up here at college so I don't really know.

Visit their website here: http://www.h2orobots.org/

MicroChip hosts the MicroChip Masters August 9th. It is more of a demo competition.

Microchip would like your help. We are having our annual MASTERS event and would like to have six FIRST robots teams participate in a mini competition. If your team has a working robot and you are able to volunteer to help us, please send me an email and let me know. carol.popovich@microchip.com This event will be during the summer, so I am asking now for commitments for teams to set aside this date, August 9, 2007 in the evening to participate.

Contact Carol Popovich for more information.

I got an email from Carol that indicated they have enough teams signed up already....

Last year the Master's event filled up in less than a day. We responded faster this year, we'll see if we got in this time.

The underwater challenge by Carl Hayden is the only off-season event thing really happening. There are other competitions in Arizona still (FVC, FLL, PAReX), but none are related to FRC.

And unfortunately the closest one to us won't happen until mid-October (in California).

Do you guys want an off-season in the Phoenix area? There's a good chance I may be going to Arizona State as a graduate student (no promises here), but let me know if there's an interest.

Re: Arizona Offseason Events

I certainly would like to see an off-season event of this year's game, rather than other competitions like we currently have. The only off-season events on the west coast are CalGames (San Jose), Fall Classic (LA I think?), and Battle at the Border (San Diego). CalGames and Fall Classic always happen in October (problematic for AZ teams who don't want to do more travel, since we do enough during the Spring), and Battle at the Border looks like it too will have this problem since it's in September (before this year it's been in May, but falls right around finals-week for AZ teams since we get out end of Mayish).

There's probably not enough time for this year, but I would like to get an actual off-season event FOR THE SUMMER going next year. I would look at contacting DeVry about helping, our team has approached them about sponsorship before and they're interested in helping out FIRST teams, however they do not want to sponsor any single team due to past sponsorships issues and would rather help a group of teams.

Did Kingman stop doing their event? That would certainly be closer then San Diego, LA, or San Jose.

I've been on our team since 2004 and have never heard of Kingman's off-season event (I've heard that it existed, but never it happening again), which gives me the impression that it probably hasn't happened in more than 4 years.

We do have Duel in the Desert (hosted by 39, formerly 64), but that's a pre-ship scrimmage, so it doesn't really qualify as an off-season event. I also heard the turn out was extremely bad this year (something like 4 teams).

We would be willing to help out in this as well. Phoenix (or Tucson) in the summer is quite inexpensive and would make an ideal low budget event for teams willing to travel.

Team #39's robot is back from Atlanta. We would be willing to bring it to Tucson this summer.
