Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Oy vey... That's pretty much all I have to say... oy vey. I guess this makes sense. "You can still attend IRI and NOT miss getting your copy of Harry Potter!" Truely nerdy. :D
|
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Haha, its really funny actually: we were having a meeting today and I asked my mentor if we'd be able to attend a midnight HP party. I mean hey, we have a 5 hour plane ride back, might as well have Harry Potter 7 for it :]

It would be a great read after a great competition and a lot of fun. Nerdy is when you've read each book 3 times cover to cover. I've done that. :D |

Yeah, I'll hopefully be picking up a copy, if not I'll be getting it right when we get back. |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Is it sad that this was part of the consideration of if I should go to IRI this year?
|
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Let it be known that if anyone should ruin the ending for me, (the way the 6th book was) public beatings will ensue. I am sure I'm not alone in this feeling.
Don't ruin what remains of my childhood. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. |

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Because I don't like Harry Potter, I'll wear a button that says "Ask me for the ending." Then I'll randomly pick an ending from a deck of cards, with only one being the real one... then you must guess if it's true or false... Evil laugh ensues and I'll gladly take any beating by a FIRST student/mentor.
Haha... JK! I'm taking Lacey to see the movie on Sunday, against my will. Her birthday present... |

I wonder what all the book stores in Baltimore will be like... I have a friend who will be at Otakon. I don't know if she's a big enough fan to go camp the bookstores for the final Harry Potter book. I don't know what is nerdier. Otakon and Harry Potter or IRI and Harry Potter. This will be one of the nerdiest weekends in the history of the world. And I'm taking part in it! (yay!) |

People get too hyped up on the smallest things these days... On another note, is there an AMC Theater in Indianapolis? They are the only ones (at least in my area) that have shows starting up to midnight. Maybe there is a good movie out that Friday or Saturday?!? |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
I got word last night that Book People here in Austin is building a Hogwarts in their parking lot. They needed hay bales - that's why I know this...and I won't be here, I'll be at IRI. :)
I don't know which is nerdier - but I know IRI is the coolest. Absolutely. I know this because I'm going to miss Hogwarts and Book People and it's ok, I'll be at IRI. And I have always read the ending before the beginning of a book. Since I was little. I don't recommend it to anyone, but it works for me. |

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
For anyone wondering:
I called Barnes & Noble - they have a party from 6-10 that night. They're doing line control with colored wristbands, starting at 11 o'clock for lineup. They start giving out wristbands at 5pm, first come first serve. You can still pre-order a book from them if you want. I also called Borders. They have a party that starts at 9:30 - a costume contest, some fun games, etc. They'll also be doing wristbands and you can come in at any point in the day to pick one, also first come first serve. They aren't taking reservations for books anymore, but the gentleman I spoke to said he could still put your name on the list and have a pretty good chance of getting a book - he just couldn't garauntee it. |

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
They'll never understand if they don't read the books. I refuse to go see some movies because the previews tear up the book so much. Truthfully, the Harry Potter series has stayed relatively close to the book line.
|
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
I've been reading Harry Potter since I was in fourth grade. Truly, to have both HP 7, movie 5, and the IRI within the same span of two weeks will be a summer to remember. With book 7 coming out right in the middle of the IRI, I'll be getting very little sleep that night.
|
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Another note on the Borders party! (I found a loophole.)
They haven't taken reservations down from their website yet, and I was able to actually RESERVE a copy, instead of just hope for one. Go to: https://www.bordersstores.com/search...sp?id=56781837 After you fill out your info, choose the Indianapolis-Castleton store on Castelton Corner Lane. I never got an email confirmation, but I called them and they said it was on their list and reserved. So in case you reserve but don't get a confirmation either, just call and make sure. I'd recommend sooner than later, as I don't know when they'll realize they haven't updated their site. XD |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
2 things......
1) is there a 24 hour walmart anywhere nearby? I have had good luck just walking in and getting one whenever after midnight. Personally I really don't care about the parties or wrist bands, I just want the book. 2) anyone who is planning on getting a book that night at IRI can I give you cash the day before at IRI and you get be a copy? I doubt that I will be able to get to any store myself, but having a book on the way home would be great. PM me. |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
I second that, I would really like a book, but i honestly won't be able to transport myself to buy the book.
I know it would seem kinda unfair to have someone else just get one for me and not wait in line myself, but I would really like to hand money over for a book at IRI as well. It would mean a lot to me, so if anyone wouldn't mind grabbing another copy for me, PM me please. |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Edit: I'll call the bookstore today and see if there is a problem with handing them a pre-ordered list.
If there is, I'll post. Update #1 - I've called Borders at Castleton Corners and the general manager has agreed to crunch some numbers for me. I've asked for a reserve order of 20 to 30 books - they will get back with me this p.m. and I'll let you know what was actually able to be reserved. We are thinking the fastest most efficient way to handle this. So far 4 are on the list for me to pick up a book for them. If anyone else is interested please let me know via pm. We'll go first come first serve. If this pans out, I may publish your names in the thread to keep things from getting confused. Jane |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Any Indiana-ites have a guess as to whether the newsstands in the Indy airport will have some copies?
I'd prefer to just pick one up in the airport before we leave, since we've got around 10 hours of travel time from Indy to San Fran. |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Stay away from the internet if you really wanna read the book in a hardcover rather than printed pages. Apparently a copy of the book is being hosted on torrents according to Digg.com.

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
yeah the entire book is out. Everyone will know spoilers in a couple days.
Cover your ears and shut your eyes til midnight on the twentieth, I say. |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
But I'll warn you to disable your G-Talk. My brilliant friend put the spoiler on his G-talk caption thing and I am sure that many people will pull that on you. Btw, if my friend is right, this book isn't worth reading.

Those who have asked in this thread and also PM'd me are pretty certain to get a book. --- Update #3 4 spots left... |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
The rumor around Indiana is that some locals have seen the book for weeks. You see, there is a big book printing company in Crawfordsville, Indiana, named RH Donnelly. Rumors abound that Donnelly is the place where this book is being printed. There have been reports of armed guards, gate searches, and other types of high security within the book manufacturing plant. Here is a story to tell you more about it.
As usual, Indiana is a bit ahead of everyone else (well, at least these people on Donnelly's production lines). Andy B. |

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
Alrighty,
Update #4 and last - Each book = $22.25 That includes the tax. If each person that has told me that you want a book will bring me your cash some time before Friday evening, we'll get it taken care of. The folks at Borders have been awesome to work with and I am going to enjoy meeting them in person. Folks from Indiana sure know how to make you feel welcome. |

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
I can't believe I'm actually risking getting on the internet before reading the book. But if anyone spoils it for me, they will need more than a horcrux to save them.

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
My family decided to visit IRI while on vacation; camping at a KOA about 15 miles away from Lawrence N. High School. Today after dropping our son off to help, we went to get some supplies from a Walmart in Greenfield. They had a pile of H. P. & the Deathly Hallows at 8 am. We picked one up for $17.78.
After last night's IRI talent show, it's nice to have something to entertain us tonight. (Although it will be tough for Harry to compete with FishHead Boy and the Orange Man Group, the Martian's Judges Challenge, love songs and robot themed rock!) |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
I found it entertaining that I couldn't go anywhere without seeing someone carrying it around or reading it.
If someone's going to ignore a robotics competition to read a book, one of two things must be true (or both): 1.) It's a good book. 2.) The person is insane. *Nodnod* This was the general opinion of our team, and we had someone with the book, and I'm getting it soon. Indeed. |
Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
When ever a team went to go get an award, I would see about 8 HP books averagely, JUST LYING AROUND!!! If you looked around some more, about a third of the students eiter were carrying it around, or was reading it!!! We couldn't get one of our members out of it. Everytime we went to do something, he would try to get back to his book. Once he had his book, communication was impossible.:ahh:

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
We were sitting next to team 1625 and one of the students started to look at the end of his book. As adults, we felt it our responsiblity to chastise the young man. Trying to short cut to the ending of Harry, is like trying to fast forward into the future and finding out who won the IRI without witnessing the fierce, edge-of-your seat final rounds. I wouldn't have missed it for the world!
PS. I hope to buy my copy today. We had to cart the robotic trailer and my husband wasn't too interested in hauling it around to look for bookstores. |

I got back from IRI late Saturday and find that my daughter has finished it, and my son has started. Then my wife got it on Sunday, and she finished shortly after midnight (early Monday morning). I'll be next, but first I have to reread #6 because I can't remember enough of it. I know, I should have started my review earlier!
Anyone else have 3 people read your copy in 2 days? |

Re: IRI and Harry Potter - What A Combination
I've read the end of books ever since forever. This time I did not. I made myself stay in order (it has sort of morphed into: hop around in the book and find all the goody) and I'm glad I was so self-disciplined. I think if I had read the end or hopped around, it would not have worked in this book.
Gary, hurry up and read the book so we can talk about it. :) |
