The Nothing Thread

MODS: Please delete this if you see fit. I've heard plenty of people complain about the Chit-Chat portion of CD, and this pretty much follows that 'useless talk' frame of mind....

But anyway.

Alright, I pretty much spend all day in my cubicle (working of course ;) ) I have CD-Spy up on a dedicated computer. But for a while during the day, it seems like it's malfunctioning, and I immediately pull up a new browser window to refresh the portal, only to find out that there is simply NOTHING NEW! (I swear I'm not addicted to CD.) So I pretty much wanted to create a thread in which anyone can post whatever is on their mind, as long as it's remotely interesting.

This could definitely turn into a game. Imagine the quotes that could come out of this. Weekly, we could judge people's tid-bits of info and anecdotes and have a winner.

Just some idea's. I just get so bored sometimes, that I would love to hear about whatever else someone is doing.

But of course, this could be completely out of place. Just send me a PM and I'll take it down, or a Mod can take it down for me. If this is viewed as what 'CD isn't about', then don't sweat it.

EDIT: After reading Eric's post, I'm glad that at least someone else thinks it's a good idea. The only issue is that because it's in the games thread, you must WAIT to post again. Bummer.

EDIT2: I was thinking about it, and I think that the normal 10 post rule for games should not apply here. If you're bored, you should be able to post, regardless of the last time you posted. Just a thought.

Jacob

I like this idea. I know I sit watching CD spy, during that time of day when people like to do important things, like school or work  (8am-3pm), and it would be nice to have another distraction from stuff I actually should be doing.

As long as the discussion in the thread stays appropriate I think this could be another good chit-chat thread.

Too bad I'm not doing anything other than watching CD, or I'd post more.

Re: The Nothing Thread

Crazy idea that popped in my head the other day.
Two words.....
Potato battery.
Why go through all of the trouble of recharging batteries when you could just through in another potato? (If we could get it to work:rolleyes: ) I just thought that that would be an interesting. They have already started that (I think anyways) by making the potato alarm clock, and plus I have made and electro-magnet with a potato battery about a year ago.

And afterwords,
MASHED POTATOES!!!:D

EDIT: By the way, I think this is a good idea. It will surely keep us CD addicts busy this summer.

Edit:Fixed the Potato problem:rolleyes:

Even a "Nothing Thread" can add value. What is CD-Spy? Is this hidden under one of those frequently asked questions or on a sticky somewhere that we all should have read? What does it do? How does it work? Does it explain why some people answer questions and reply to posts or PM's almost immediately afther you've posted them?

And now that I've made my public service request...

I'll do a grammar fairy update... the word is Potato! And Tomato! So Seth, I hate to pick on you because I know you are from the state that produced the championship speller Dan Quayle, but drop that "e" unless you have more than one potato / tomato! Which of course you will, since you will be changing out your Potato Battery on a regular basis!

Re: The Nothing Thread

I am taking an English course online over the summer (7 weeks). Ugh.

Every Thursday and Monday, I need to read two short stories and write a response to them. The stories are given.

I personally view this, not as a waste of time, but time that could be better spent. I am a very math/science/tech type of person, and have always hated taking english/history/art/culture courses.

So I guess I'm just posting about this in a sort of frustration out of reading stories that I honestly don't care about, and writing my thoughts on them. I know that some say that this is good for me, that I should be happy about doing it, that it will help me further in life, etc. I still can't see how any of that is true..... But I guess that's just me. :p

Oh well, rant is over. This was truly, about nothing (of importance).

I agree completely Jacob. Reading random short stories don't make you that much smarter! Quick question to all you CD ppl (most of who are older than me and will be able to answer this question) In general, is taking a language (either latin or spanish) easier in class durring the school year, or through an internet course durring the summer? k thanks for all the help *in advance*.
-Lauren
P.S. I need to eventually take latin 1, spanish 1 and 2 OR latin 1 and 2, spanish 1

Re: The Nothing Thread

Trust me right now! You want to take the class from a teacher, as long as they can make it interesting and don't do all of these homework assignments that have no meaning (Grammar worksheets, definition worksheets, and short stories/essays don't count). The teachers actually teach it rather than just give you a list to memorize. Plus, they can make sure you know it, rather than you being able to just read and leave it out of your mind on the internet. I know this because my classes this year were mixed first semester online classes and second in the public school.

My response...AMEN!!! That is exactly how I am. I truly don't see the use of perfect grammar, just as long as it isn'tall slang and rude. That's just me though, and I love math, but only care about English to get my credits. English classes only seem to repeat themselves...Gets borring.

OK, so let's start this game all ready!

I have a really nonrandom thought on my mind right now which simply is how am I going to get windows XP to work on my computer. Basically when I install XP, the drivers can't find my hardware. Plus I am wondering why my mom is saying "Eww" as she reads a paper that my dad just handed her. I dono, but now all of a sudden she is laughing, now agreeing, and now saying "That was sweet". I dono, grr I hate Vista.

Perhaps we could turn this into a "Daily Events thread" of sorts? A couple forums I've been on had one, it works really well if the members are active in posting (which I would expect the CD'ers to be)

Re: The Nothing Thread

I used to go on ChiefDelphi a lot, but as of late I've found myself going on only once or twice a day. When I stick to a schedule or sorts, I find myself wasting less time. (Besides, somehow it seems like everything has more meaning when I check it once per day, as opposed to every ten seconds.) It's like reading the newspaper or watching World News with Charlie Gibson once a day (or reading Time magazine once a week) to learn about current events in the world, as opposed to watching the mindless, 24/7 banter on cable news networks.

Lauren,

Take a foreign language class in person. Don't take it online. Foreign languages are one of those things that you have to experience, hear, and speak it in real time to begin to understand and comprehend it. Just merely reading and writing about it on a computer teaches you the theory, but not the culture of the language.

However, if you do take a class online, listen to music in the language you are taking if possible. Try to write down the lyrics in the foreign language as you hear them. This will help you become better at listening to and comprehending the language. And remember, taking any foreign language is better than taking nothing. It really does help on SAT tests (and if you take Latin, it will help in science courses, especially biology.)

For me, it wasn't until I read Fahrenheit 451 that I really began to appreciate literature, and the novel 1776 by David McCullough that I really began to appreciate history, especially the history of the United States. Both of these novels hit me as showing how "fragile" our current world is, and the only way to ensure it continues as strong as before is with a keen vigilance and a large, multi-discipled education.

While you may not always like all those other classes, they are important for your varied education. With time, you'll come to realize that even though you may dislike these classes, you need them.

Many of my teachers who I once regarded as "too strict and/or mean" have turned out in hindsight to be some of the most influential and best teachers in my life. They teach you to work hard, stay on your toes, and never slack off. These are the teachers that enable students to become successful.

Here's an appropriate place to put this!

Okay, so I'm willing to bet that only 2-3 people that use CD actually know that the CSWS (College Softball World Series) is going on right now. Actually, game 2 of the finals was played tonight. Tennessee Lady Vols vs. Arizona Lady Wildcats...

Anywho, anyone that knows me knows that I am a HUGE University of Tennessee fan. Well, I was following this game tonight on a Vols forum and learned they lost. So what? They've got one more game to win it all... one more! Ahhh... lol.

They have the BEST pitcher in the history of the NCAA (51-4 this year alone). Well, I expect them to win tomorrow night.

Hm... that's all I have to say. I thought I would actually post something more meaningful, but eh... such is life. Have a nice night.

My birthday is comming up on June 24. What I'm thinking is a nice long bike ride, and a full out Batlefront II game, with networked computers and a PS2. Would try to get an XBOX in it, too, but can't get it networked.

Who knows? One of my friend's B-Day is that same day, I'm trying to do something with him. Man, I hate schedule conflicts:mad:

Tomorrow, out team is having a fundraiser! We are putting on a Car Wash from 9-3. It will be held at ASD in West Hartford. I can post more info if anyone is interested.

Besides that, the day was pretty cool. Just hung around in my cubicle, played some games, fixed a server problem, ate some doritos, etc.

What kind of stuff are people doing this weekend? I know I'm helping at the Car Wash and going to a B-Day party (not mine).

I just got a book about XNA, a Windows/Xbox 360 game API written on top of .NET. Yes, even the libraries are .NET! :ahh:. So far I've made a Pong clone. I'd like to make an Arkanoid, I put a link for those of you who don't have any 20 year old game systems, clone, but that will probably take more that one weekend.

Other than that I plan to watch CD-spy.

Re: The Nothing Thread

So today, I learned a few things:

1. Having a car wash while it's raining out is not a very effective way of earning money for your robotics team.

2. Having a car wash while it's raining out is an effective way of bringing your team closer together.

3. If you are going to have a car wash, make sure you have a very large stereo / car stereo that you can crank up to keep your workers happy.

4. If you do decided to have a car wash while it's raining out, offer all of your workers a coffee/tea/beverage of their choice, even if it means using the first three hours of profit to pay for it (2 cars).

5. Your kids will start spraying each other with the hoses at a car wash, so forget about trying to prevent it.

6. Change your underwear at least once a week (even if you don't think they are dirty).

7. Life takes Visa. Your robotics team doesn't. Make sure your patrons know that BEFORE you wash their car.

That's about all I have.

Jacob

EDIT (grrr.... another example of why having this in the games folder is annoying...):

Nothing.

This weekend, I was on a climbing trip in Ohio at John Bryan State Park. It was fun and everybody in my scout troop had fun.:D It was excellent weather, not to warm, not to cold. But we did need some more snacks and water. Being away from food and having one water bottle while being active all day do not go well. Makes dinner that much better, though.:D

Just got home an hour ago. I leave tomorrow at six for Michigan for most of the week. That will be fun.:D Gotta love Michigan.

In the past week I've watched four movies (History of the World: Part 1, Zoolander, Cars, and Little Miss Sunshine), made one movie (using two X-Boxes, two copies of Halo 2, a capture card, and four determined people).

Having a license and a car is very nice, indeed.
I can't believe I procrastinated and waited to get my license until summer was over last year. Gah. Silly me.

Srry, it was a very long weekend. Just as this one.

I'm bored right now, so I'm just going to explain my weekend. On Friday, I had some friends come over. We went swimming, played with airsoft guns, and played the Wii until 3 in the morning. Then my friends put in Scooby Doo 2 (funny, but gets old after you have seen it a dozen times) so I fell asleep. The next morning, we went to walk in the parade. Got there at 9 and didn't even start walking until 11. Long parade. Good news, we got to watch part of it while waiting to start our walk and got free ice cream. Later, we went to work on and Eagle Scout project, and then went to my friends house to see their goats and sheep.

Today, I went to church, did computer tech. Found out we got a new computer in one of the back rooms, and sang the hallelujah course(finally got rid of the 98). Then went to Fort Wayne, did a few geocaches, went to a chinese buffet, then came home to have brownies and ice cream with family and open b-day cards (today was my b-day). I did a little bit of designing on our segway, and now I'm talking on CD. It was a good weekend:D

Re: The Nothing Thread

Wow-I haven't been on for over a week

And now...STORY TIME

I had a scout campout last Thursday-Saturday. The entire trip was all about survival (luckily no one died). There was me, nine other boys, and four leaders. Most of the time we were around the Maryland-West Virginia border.

Day One
WARNING: Day one is not to be read by the squemish or most girls (not to be sexist, but most the girls I've told about it wish I hadn't). If youy want to know why, read on, but don't say I didn't warn you.
Spoiler for Day One:
Day one was survival day, meaning we had to catch our own food. We woke up early in the morning and set off through West Virginia to Maryland. On the way we stopped for about an hour at a chicken farm to pick up some chickens for dinner (these are live chickens by the way). We got four chickens and put them in a dog cage one of the leaders had brought. Later we arrived at our campsite and set up camp. To get some food for dinner, we went fishing at a lake, and later a river. This was mostly uneffective and out of the ten of us, we caught about five small fish, and most of us were sleeping most of the time. When we got back to the campsite it was starting to rain so we had to hang some tarps from trees over our fire pit and cooking station. We had a couple people gutting the fish while the rest of us prepared the chicken (and somewhere there are pictures of this). We had to kill the chickens by having one person hold the chicken's body while the other would grab the head, pull it, and then chop it off. We then hung the body by the legs until all the blood came out. We chopped off the legs and put the chicken in some boiling water so the feathers would come off easier. We plucked out all the feathers, gutted them, and stuck them on a pole to make some delicious rotisary chicken.

Day Two
We went white water rafting on some rappids. I can't remember the name, but they were in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. There is a sign that says 19 people have died on the rapids, which is of course not very comforting. We all made it through safely and had a coulple hours of fun. Later that night we went to Subway for dinner and went to see Evan Almighty (which was not all that great). When we got back to camp we found a big field and set up a telescope. We saw some cool stuff, Jupiter and some of it's moons.

Day Three
We drove back down to Northern Virginia where some of us did some rock climbing and repeling for a coulple of hours. When I finally got home it felt so good to finally be able to take a shower. And then I went straight to our team party (wouldn't want to miss that :D ) (and I was only a little late, but it was worth it).

Now that is the funniest wilderness experience I have ever heard! And I'm one of those non-squeamish girls because I grew up on one of those places where you went to get the items described in your hidden tale. You should hear my mom tell the story about taking an entire trunkful to an old fashioned processing location...

And then the next day you went to Subway and a Movie Theater. Where on earth did you find them in the middle of the wilderness!?! :ahh: And then the giant telescope - yeah we all carry those in our survival backpacks. The contrast between Day 1 and Day 2 was so spectacularly understated! It sounds like it was a truly great weekend!

Sounds like it was a blast. Those chickens must have been good, being fresh and all. To bad for the fish. If you would have caught more, it would have made a nice meal.
Tell me this, for fires, did you use matches, flint and steel, or magnesium to start them?

ok, so the challenge that I have accepted today is to make 7 batches of brownies. It is not my challenge, it is one I have taken up to help a weaker soul. The decision regarding this challenge that is not my challenge that I have taken up, is that I'm going to eat all the ugly brownies that come out all gooey and broken. And the best part is that intensive scientific research has shown that the pieces of brownies that remain in the pan after cutting and removing the good brownies have no calories! And now you know!!!

That would be a funny diet plan. The brownie crumbs in the pan diet. People would probably go for that!

The brownies are very heavy. I can't imagine how much it is going to cost to mail them. They are headed to the mountains to some Paul Bunyons who are clearing paths.

I just got back from a week long church camp and so I haven't been able to check CD all week. So now I have tons of new posts to read through, and my mom is telling me to go to bed, so I guess I'll have to do it tomorrow.
Luckily I don't have anything better to do in the summer.

What festivals are the most fun where you live? I just got back from a barbeque cook off / rib festival! I am so stuffed from sampling all the different ribs and brisket and pulled pork!!! :ahh:

And to top it off, I had my first ever DEEP FRIED OREO!! :yikes: I'm still not sure what my final judgement will be, but it was tasty.

The Big E is the best by far. Held in Springfield, MA each fall, it features terrific food, parades, carnival rides and shows, animal and agriculture displays, etc. Each New England state has a replica of their original statehouse on Avenue of the States displaying some of the places, food, etc they are known for. I can never decide if I want to buy a Maine baked potato or blueberry or apple pie a la mode, have some cheddar cheese or clam chowder! Hmmm my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

This week, I pack, next week, I will be in Montana at Glacier National Park, backpacking. I just got a back pack from my very good friends (second family). We'll be traveling by van, and there will be 8 or 10 of us (I'm still not sure). I'm looking forward to it. Now if our library would only have some audio books in (can't find a single one that I would want) :(

Continuing along with the food chat, in a couple of weeks will be Huntington's Cornfest, with a hog roast included!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm :D

I'm on day 5 of not talking to Lacey for more than 5 minutes... this sucks! She's in Florida for a church youth group gathering... I hope she's having fun. I had a whole weekend of fun planned, but she made me promise I wouldn't consume any ------l. That's what I get for having friends that do that kind of stuff. On the other hand, I was completely sober and in right mind this weekend (have been for 20 years, ;))

right now I'm on vacation in Utah, and I just got back from a four day camping trip (if you can really call it that, seeing as we were in cabins with electricity and running water-but no internet so no CD) in the Uintas (mountains in Utah) with my family, my grandparents and some of my cousins.

It's nice to get back to civilization.

As you get back to civilization, I will leave it. Tonight we leave around 6 to Montana. We're driving there, so it will be a long drive. I just finished packing, except for my mp3 player, but I'm putting some more stuff on it. We be back packing in Glacier National Park. I'm looking forward to it and just emptied out my camera, so I will be able to take lots of pics :D

Re: The Nothing Thread

If we are describing our awesome vacations...

I went to this place in the middle of the US, called Indiana, where I was surrounded by nothing but hundreds of creatures dressed in shirts of many colors, some anxiously pushing large mechanical objects on carts, some with tall spiky hair, very loud and enthusiastic about being in the same place.

They kept getting especially vocal, sometimes making animal sounds and loud explosive noises, when these mechanical objects picked up the local flora which were red, blue and strangely black squishy circular flowers and placed then on some sort of sacrificial monument which was tended to by revered members of the group who were identified by wearing black and white stripes.

I ate the local specialties - taco salad, homemade peach pie to die for, and some peculiar round object known as a krispy kreme. I saw a dramatic display of native ceremonial dancing called the chicken - cotton-eye - macarena -ymca - joe dance or something like that which was led by two tribal leaders one of which had blue hair and loved to go upside down.

I also was able to witness a demonstration of the unique abilities of some of the creatures which included lovely music and vocalization as well as some additional ceremonial dance and what could only be described as an unusual mating ritual between two of the young creatures, one wearing the headdress claimed to be the property of the other creatures father while he "serenaded" the other who was formally presented to those in attendance. This demonstration also included a visit by an alien population who attempted to capture some of the more respected members of the community in large round spheres but were fortunately foiled and the captives escaped, one just barely. To settle down the crowd, a group of hairy sibling creatures with an enigmatic leader was brought forth. They were able to arise to the challenge and the crowd dispersed in peace at the end of their performance.

Well there was really too much to fully describe here, so I'll just have to say that if you cant go to Utah or Montana on summer vacation, then Indiana is the place to go! :D

How the heck do you do field-relative driving? As soon as someone smacks into the robot, things get messed up. Big time.

Encoders suck when they aren't aligned to the chain.

Never leave a newbie unattended with a task that involves a soldering iron. The newbie will mess it up. I'm referring here to the encoder cables. It is a special pinout, so I handed it off to a freshman, and he botched the crimps. Oh well.

Never let LensCrafters touch your glasses. Yesterday, one of the arms broke off my 2-year-old frames, and I figured they would have a replacement, or at least be able to fix it professionally. So what do they do? They take the electrical tape off that I put on temporarily and replaced it with a brown piece of *heat shrink tubing*. Heat shrink! On glasses! And, he melted one of my lenses with the heat gun.

At least he didn't charge for it. Now I have to look through a ripple in the lens for about 2 weeks until a) my vision appointment is done on Tuesday, and b) the 2-week turnaround time for manufacturing the lenses is finished.

Stupid people. I could've done that fix in our shop. Only without melting the lens.

I get braces in a couple of weeks. That should be fun...:(

That's about all that's on my mind right now.

Continuing to talk about my vacation...

I spent most of yesterday at Lagoon (an amusement park) it was alright, but lines were annoyingly long, but I guess that's more or less unavoidable at amusement parks.

Today my uncle took me, my brothers, and my dad out into nowhere to go shooting. We filled up old milk jugs, water bottles, soda bottles... with water and blasted them with rifles and shotguns. I have some pictures somewhere, and my uncle has some video footage, so I'll see if I can get it up here.

I just had the best time. We are setting up the '07 robot for a display/demo at NI Week here in Austin and it was so much fun. Just in the brief time I was there dropping off stuff, I had a couple of people from other booths come over and introduce themselves and ask what team we are with. They are alumni from different teams, different states. It was awesome. Good stuff, that. I'll be in and out all week and will take photos of a few things like the cool banner that was made with our robot on it.

It's been interesting also because I'm still hauling around a lot of stuff from the San Antonio demo/scrimmage on Jul. 19 that Andrew Schuetze organized for us. I was on my way to IRI so my son pulled the trailer to that event. If I recall, it was raining or threatening to rain that day. We were helping FRC 2158, AusTIN Cans, with their robot and gear as well. So - for some reason the trailer tire jack is in my car but not the trailer and we aren't sure where some other things are - like a red ringer. They'll show up and I'm interested to discover where. In the meantime, I still had tools and the controller and everything loaded ready for the NI event. That was pretty cool. There's nothing better than a car loaded up for a FIRST demo/event/competition. It just about makes the day perfect.

2 AM POST!!!

OK, so....

I haven't been on CD in quite a while. I got out for like a week (several months ago), and when I came back, I was swamped with all the new posts all over the place, and just kind of gave up.

So now I'm BACK!!!

Anyway, I find myself staying up much past 2 o'clock. I think it would be fun to post on this thread if you are up at 2 oclock (LOCAL TIME PLEASE... no more california cheaters (like on woot!) :p )

The only problem that I forsee is being pretty nutty at 2 oclock. Not even sure if this is a good idea.

Update: thanks to one of the other scouts, there is now a video of this on youtube here.

(no that is not me)

So...... I'm sitting in my Microelectronics class... Listening to my professor babble on about how the Width and Length of Q1 and Q2 on the silicon of a MOSFET effects the output current compared to the reference.....

I'm bored. Anyone else out there sitting in class bored?

Just thought I'd ask.

Nah, he's a high schooler. He may be on a university campus.

And in some college classes, I couldn't access the internet in class if the prof didn't want me to. There are programs that can shut down parts of your computer during class times if needed. The school I'm at uses one. (Most of the profs I've had so far only use it for taking roll, though. If they even take roll.) And it's a pretty good university.

Jacob is way more than a highschooler! As I recall - and Jacob you can chime in here any time - he is taking college courses while finishing up HS. Lots of college courses. And running his own company / charitable organization on the side, and building bots!!! Hopefully one of these days he will publish his secret of living without sleeping. :yikes:

Yep. Its been one of the best "Hey I'm bored," or "I have this random thought" threads around. And if you go back and read it it does have some Seinfeld-ish moments. Some really deep thoughts and some total silliness! :)

Wow, I just found this thread, but no ones posted for 14 days, so I thought I would revive it.

So, I got a new phone today, and I hate it!! I got a Razor, and it's not all it's cracked up to be. I can't put any of my 200 pictures on it without having to pay extra. Not all of my contacts made it into my new phone, and none of my ringtones, videos, or other random personal phone stuff will transfer over. And I can't figure out for the life of me how to even work the darn thing. Its terrible!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr............Oh well. I guess I'll just be grateful that it was bought for me.Its official, though. I think I'm hooked on CD(well, that might not be a very good thing.) I guess that had to happen eventually, though.
