FIRST The Trivia Game

Hello all and thanks for checking this out.

Ok, so let me give a back story before I get to the "juicy" stuff. I am in charge of the Team Social at the MARC event this weekend. Well, one idea that I came up with was a simple trivia game where the questions related to FIRST and such.. well I am no FIRST expert and neither is our team. We just don't have that experience yet, incluidng myself the most FIRST experienced member. So I said I would just go ask CD for some trivia. But then I thought about it more, and figured you guys might want to play the game as well!

Hench, after much thought and a little programming i have created FIRST The Trivia Game. http://www.charlieslab.com/trivia (tested/working in Opera 9, IE 6, FF 2)

The basic ideas are:
-- anybody can submit trivia very easily
-- anybody can answer the trivia very easily

Well, I think I accomplished this by eliminating the need for accounts and such. All one has to do is visit the very simple website and they can begin to play or submit. (In the future there will be other features relating to trivia, hence the More section)

Anyway. So it is ready in its most basic form to begin being used. It has only 2 trivia questions, because as I said I do not have a ton of good ideas on that, hence the point of the site.

So check it out if you dont think its totally lame (which I will understand if you do). And submit some trivia about your team that people could answer, or about any of the other fun topics on there.

I am open and kind of requesting suggestions here on how to improve the site and such. I dont expect it to be WIN on the first try. So let me know what I need to do.

What it needs most is:
-- trivia
-- suggestions for improvement

Thanks CD! Hope you at least get a good laugh out of it.

That looks great!
a few tips:
* You should add some more answers to the questions, or ake them multichoice.
There is a question :" what is the name of the camera that loves to find green light?"
answers could go : cmu, cmucam, cmucam2, cmu cam, cmu cam 2 etc...
a multi choice will solve it...

* Maybe add an option for users to play on/without time...

*show the correct answer once answered wrong...

*next question could be closer to the question, and not in the other side of the window...

once again, looks great!

good stuff. i agree on the multiple answer idea, implementing as we speak. the no time option I will also add, as I think I agree with you.

not a fan of showing the answer, but I will consider it and wait for some more feedback. the only reason I dont is cause I planned to implement a scoreboard system, and I wouldnt want people abusing the available answers.

and yeah, I will move the next question link.

thanks!

anybody else, bring em on, i love em.

Seriously do consider showing the correct answer for when you have a large database of questions. This will prove useful to people like me who want to find out the answer and remember it to show off later. :D Also I was asked the same question 3 times in a row. You may want to fix that.

Multiple choice will definitely help. On the camera question, answering 'CMUcam2' (without quotes) as it is correctly referred to was considered wrong. At least if there is a choice of answers then it will be easier to guess exactly how the original answer was worded.

Otherwise, looks good. ;)

You could make the answer button respond to the enter key, and not just the mouse button. Other than that looks great, and you already have a small database of questions going.

Re: FIRST The Trivia Game

ok, the multiple answers feature has been implemented. now the people making questions can supply a list of answers, seperated by commas, and any of one which can be used as a correct answer.

and i think I will show the answers. and when it comes time to make the scoreboard system, I will make a tougher version of the Play mode, with a small time limit (which means I will remove the time limit from normal Play mode). so if someone does abuse, they must be good and so deserve it, LOL.

just some thoughts. great suggestions guys! keep em coming!

edit: and I will work on the enter button response. FYI: it works in Opera with no code written by me. (I luv my opera)

Is there any way for us to go back and add answers to our questions now, or does that have to be done by you?

To add to the idea, you may want to be-able to add more answer to to the same question like Art mentioned. As for when it asks about a specific team, the answer of just inputting a team number may not be seen as correct if you were looking for their name or acronym or nickname etc...

since everything is anonymous, I would have to do it. if you add the question again I will see it and take the proper action.

Actually i ment radio choice there, like 5-6 options.

Re: FIRST The Trivia Game

Wouldn't that make the game too easy. I mean if this is going to be used for a contest at MARC it needs to have a good level of difficulty.

just to clarify this is not just for MARC. and in fact, after discussion with someone today, we are taking the team social in a different direction.

i just made this for everybody in FIRST to enjoy cause I thought it was a cute idea that wouldnt be TOO hard to implement, and it gave me a chance to experiment with a new ajax lib i found.

so this is hopefully not a 1 time thing. i hope this grows and and be used at any event or place, for entertainment and fun.

and I am personally not a fan of the multiple choice idea.

but i am starting to consider the idea of various MODES. so one mode may be a multiple choice mode.

its all still new, so nothing is out the window. first thing first though, I need the data. you guys are doing great with suggestions and trivia, so keep it up!

Re: FIRST The Trivia Game

A couple of usability observations:
- The 'Next Question' button doesn't seem to work for skipping a question until the timer has reached zero (or until you hit the 'Answer' button to make it go to zero)
- It's kind of annoying to have to manually clear the text out of the answer box when you move on to a new question - it would be better if this happened automagically when you click 'Next Question'

Great work; this has the potential to be fun.
