Personal Alternatives to "We Are the Champions"?

Wow! The "We Are the Champions" thread ran up more postings from people with 6+ green rep dots than I've seen in a long time. And in just DAYS! In AUGUST!!!! Music might sooth the savage beast, but it sure can tweak a nerve with the senior CD members it seems.

So here is a slightly different spin... what music would you most like to have played if your team should win a regional? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm quite willing to have some Queen blared for my team, but in my own personal little universe, I think it would have to be the "Throne Room/End Title" by John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra from the original Star Wars that I would really like to hear.

So, in YOUR perfect world, what song would magically appear on the PA to celebrate your championship?

Jason

And remember... this is one of those "what is your favorite colour" type questions... you don't need to justify it and you certainly don't need to critique someone else's choice.

Re: Personal Alternatives to "We Are the Champions"?

Here are some songs that I think would love to hear at the end of the regional. Some of these songs have lyrics that apply to the situation, while others just have a great sound.

"U2 - Beautiful Day" -- They played this right before the final score was announced at this year's IRI. Also, Steve Rourke and I heard it on the way to the Long Island Regional, Saturday morning in 2004, the day of Team 1114's first regional win. It's been associated with 1114 in my mind since.

"The Outfield -- Winning It all" -- NBC used to use this song with their video montage at the end of the finals. An absolute classic.

"R. Kelly -- I Am The Greatest" -- Another song that NBC used a lot during the Jordan era. Anything associated with Michael Jordan sends chills down my spine.

"The Arcade Fire - Rebellion" -- I can't really explain it, but something feels triumphant about this song. I listen to it every morning before I leave for a FIRST event to get myself pumped up. You'll understand if you ever watched the Black Donnellys (Don't click the link if you're not a fan of TV violence)

"Fallout Boy - Sugar We're Going Down Swinging" -- Let's show some love for the finalists.

"Joe Satriani - Top Gun Theme" -- This might be the best song on the list. Frankly, you could probably just grab a bunch of soundtracks from 80's movies and use any of their theme songs.

"Sean Paul - Like Glue" -- Nothing says celebration like some good old Dancehall music. Sean Paul is another Simbot favourite.

"Foo Fighters - My Hero" -- No need for explanation.

"Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" -- See above

How about anything by John Williams. For example: E.T., The Olympic Theme

But after all that, there's no song I'd rather hear than "We Are The Champions".

I know last year with our Back in Black theme, it would have been real cool for them to play Back in Black when we went up, but it was an alliance thing so we couldn't be the one to choose.

Re: Personal Alternatives to "We Are the Champions"?

Id almost have to say Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly, but maybe right before/when the last match starts I'td be cool if they played Jump by Van Halen

Re: Personal Alternatives to "We Are the Champions"?

I'm sure many will cover the rock side of things, so how about something different:

"Hang on Sloopy" - TBDBITL. With optional shouts and gestures of O!...H!...I!...O! from the crowd.

Disney Movie Roll Credits Sappy Song Ending: :D
Every time I sit down for a movie in a theater, I see this played before the previews and it always makes me smile - fits in nicely with mentoring and FIRST goals. Yeah, it's Celine, but hey:

"The Power of a Dream" - Celine Dion/Foundation For a Better Life
Full Song Video - Atlanta Olympics

Over the Top:
Introduction to Also Sprach Zarathustra - R. Strauss (Theme from 2001:A Space Odyssey)

Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens, actually, performed and wrote this song -- but otherwise, yeah, 80's music for the win.

OK GO-Invincible
The Who-Won't Get Fooled Again (only the last 45 seconds, from the scream)
The Who-Baba O'Riley
Boston-More Than a Feeling
Daft Punk-Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Daft Punk-One More Time
Smash Mouth-All Star
I'm a Believer (Probably the Smash Mouth Cover)

Invincible and All Star would both make my personal list as well. I'm not on my usual computer, so I can't look through my iTunes, but I know I'd be able to think of a few more if I could.

Mental picture of Travis sitting back enjoying his Celine Deion. Maybe right after that you can pop in the Barry Manilow.

Wish they could adapt the Soprano's theme song or even the Entorage theme song. HBO shows always have the best music.

In two days my rep points nearly doubled from that thread :p

Anyway! As for this thread.

There are a bunch of songs that have that 'tone' that would make it seem like a nice celebration song.

New Millennium - Dream Theater. It has the tone, just the lyrics don't quite fit. I can see (or hear) this song being played during a highlight video or something. Of course the live version isn't as good as the actual recording.

Take On Me - A-Ha. I don't know what it is about this song. It just gets me all excited when I hear it. Maybe it's the 80's beat? That unbelievably epic melody? This song doesn't get played nearly enough anywhere. :D (and it's got one of the coolest music videos ever!)

Universal Mind - Liquid Tension Experiment. Think 8 minute long, upbeat, instrumental from 3 of the members who brought you New Millennium.

I might think of more later.

Re: Personal Alternatives to "We Are the Champions"?

Definitely "Hold me now" by the Thompson Twins...

Ok, maybe not, I just love the song.

And I'm with Karthik on Arcade Fire - Rebellion ... I heard him and Derek playing it in the next room when I woke up on Saturday at GLR this year, and it's made me think of FIRST ever since.

How 'bout a spirited college victory march?

"The Victors"?:p

OK, if we are going to have a "champions song" (for what it is worth, I am just fine with sticking to "We Are The Champions") and we are taking new suggestions, then we might consider "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar.

But if there is going to be a "champion's song" shouldn't there also be a song for those that are smack dab in the middle of the pack, and those at the tail end of the rankings? For the former, I would suggest "Stuck In The Middle With You" by Bob Dylan, and for the latter how about "Funeral For A Friend" by Elton John? :)

p.s. and for those of you that still think you will be able to sleep at night, I want you to consider the horrible collision of misfortune that will befall all those that choose to attend the 2008 IRI Talent Show, should the truly unimaginable actually happen - a duet performance of Patsy Cline's "Crazy" featuring both Karthik and Travis.

All star is very good for this, though we are the cahmpions is better.
We will rock you could also go.
I personally think that Seak and Destroy suits (as in seak a targer - wina regional, and destroy it, as in reach it).

Re: Personal Alternatives to "We Are the Champions"?

This is not an alternative, I'm happy with swaying to 'We Are The Champions' and grinning like a kid.

A song that always inspires me and I have heard during competition, though not often enough, is 'Reach' by Gloria Estefan - (the percussion makes me feel downright Olympic):

Some dreams live on in time forever
Those dreams, you want with all your heart
And I'll do whatever it takes
Follow through with the promise I made
Put it all on the line
What I hoped for at last would be mine

If I could reach, higher
Just for one moment touch the sky
From that one moment in my life
I'm gonna be stronger
Know that I've tried my very best
I'd put my spirit to the test
If I could reach

Some days are meant to be remembered
Those days we rise above the stars
So I'll go the distance this time
Seeing more the higher I climb
That the more I believe
All the more that this dream will be mine

If I could reach, higher
Just for one moment touch the sky
From that one moment in my life
I'm gonna be stronger
Know that I've tried my very best
I'd put my spirit to the test
If I could reach

That Feel by Tom Waits off of Bone Machine would be pretty win. As would Dinosaur Jr's Freak Scene or Hoots and Hellmouth's This Hand Is A Mighty Hand.

It probably feels Olympic because it was the theme for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Estefan performed "Reach" at the closing ceremonies.

"Dies Irae" is kind of team 1418's theme song. So that would be pretty sweet to hear at a regional.

Always Look On The Bright Side of Life, preferably from Spamalot with Tim Curry.

Especially the "the last laugh is on you" part.

I would say the "Foo Fighters" with Kung Fu Fighting.:)

"We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister.

Oh wait.. that only applies to online bantering.... :p

In the end, there is no fitting replacement for We Are The Champions.

The Victory Lap song from F-Zero GX

In seriousness (not that the above wasn't serious) I feel fine about We are champions. It's not like I ever heard the part 'No time for losers' and brokedown into tears at a FIRST event...where, mind you, teams without great robots still have a great time.

While I still love "We are the Champions" (brings back many high school memories) I would choose "We Can" by LeAnn Rimes.

We can.....do the impossible
We have the power in our hands.

Great song

Re: Personal Alternatives to "We Are the Champions"?

Personally I like “We are the Champions” and don’t find it demeaning but encouraging and inspiring. But if we had to get rid of it I would recommend:

Dream On – Aerosmith. Listen to the lyrics, it can fit with the tough hurdles overcome. It’s just such a good anthem.

The Second Coming - Juelz Santana. Now I’m not a big fan of rap, but this song is a good one. There is no profanity (always good) and with the exception of one part of the song (“We take what we want we born warriors”) The Second Coming embodies the ideals of FIRST and what the competitions are for.

There are also a lot of songs that could be played before/during elimination matches, but that’s not the point of the thread.

Dream on - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNzEQ8hG1zA
The Second Coming - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWO05...related&search
