CalGames 2007 full with 30 teams!

Latest information of the CalGames Planning Process with the list of teams and awards.

Are you sure 254 isn't on that list? It would be the first time in years they didn't come to CalGames...

I was thinking the same thing....

still some good teams there though.

It should be fun! We're currently having meetings to tune up the bot after a good amount of off-time. (basically repairing the arm (we kinda broke it...), replacing tread, and so on)

I'm really looking forward to CalGames!

I believe I speak for all of 675 when I say we're going to be excited to be there, as it's our first year attending CalGames. I can't wait to Rack n' Roll with you all.

This is correct.

By a mistake in communication/oversight we signed up but did not submit payment in time.

Oh, sweet! 675 will be there! Maybe we can have a remake of Davis, only with us winning this time? Rack on!

I would totally love that.

Shame that winning at CalGames doesn't get you to Atlanta ;) but hey, we'll feel accomplished and surely have a great time so it's all good.

Re: CalGames 2007 full with 30 teams!

The CalGames is full with 30 teams and there are several teams
that are wait listed in case one of the registered teams drops out
during the next few weeks. We increased the size of the event from
24 to 30 teams this year. In spite of this demand exceeded supply.

I would like to note that teams that are not competing in the event
still have ample opportunity to be involved by volunteering at the event.
Ken Leung's volunteer chart is available in the google document linked
to in the first post of this thread. We need help on every front.

So, come on out and volunteer for the event. Wear your team shirts
and get noticed as an essential part of the community.

Brian Melani

Yeah.

For those who don't know -- If you see a lot of new faces in 675's pits, they're not intruders, merely new members. Our team leader's plan was to have a few core members go (I'm thinking that means me, brian, blake, richter & connor, but I could be wrong), and then fill the other spots with new members.

I really can't wait for CalGames, though. It's going to be nice to get back into the groove of robotics BEFORE Build season so that when build does roll around I won't be as overwhelmed.

Why not just let everyone go....? The team is much more important to each individual than you think....

I'm sure there's some reason behind not letting everybody go. It's just kinda how our team works. We never have every member at every competition. (I really kinda wish we did, though, it would be so much better that way). I think it's because the team pays for most of the travel and all of the lodging. We fundraise enough to do that.

Perhaps I'll bring it up with our team leader that they can pay for whoever can't pay for themselves and the others cover their own expenses.

Assuming that we keep doing business as usual, however, Weaver did say the whole deal about a core group going with the rest being new members.

Wait... But why do you need to pay for everyone's lodging? Cal Games was planned so that teams in your position only need to send a few members down on Friday to set up.

The rest of your team can just drive down on their own (carpool) for the competition on Saturday.

No need to exclude people.

Again, I have no real idea how any of this is set up (not calgames, but my team more specifically, and so forth, as well as school district restrictions, and yes, they exist).

Sorry for bringing up my team politics, this isn't really the place for it.

Due to some mishaps (aka not paying and registering in time) 8 won't be there either. Some of us will make be there to volunteer and watch, but not bot. I guess it just means we get to keep the cool stuff we're doing secret :P

Just a question.

How many teams have made major modifications to their robots over the summer (added ramps/ arms)?

Team 100 didn't have the weight or room available for ramps, so our robot will look the same as it always did.

675 weakened our chassis a little bit, trying to mill it for aesthetics. It'll probably hold just fine like before, however.

We probably won't add anything, assuming CG wants us to keep in the same weight limits. Besides, Gloria does her job just fine. =D

Gloria did her job amazingly well. 675 really impressed us all when they spun the rack almost half a turn. (not just the spiders, the WHOLE rack!)

I'm really looking forward to this event!

The rack will be stationary in the Cal Games.
Spinning the rack would damage the field.

Heh.

Re: CalGames 2007 full with 30 teams!

OOH! It's stationary! Autonomous, here we come!

Is it going to be a FIRST rack, made of metal? Or is this one going to be wood/pvc? Because the reflective metal was the only thing stopping us from scoring in auton this season...

Ken Leung 12-09-2007 17:29

Re: CalGames 2007 full with 30 teams!

Reinforced Wooden Rack. Stationary, equip with green lights with a constant power source. 15 points bonus for each keeper scored in autonomous mode. 2 awards for the top two performing team in autonomous mode.

There. What to work harder on your robot now? You should ;).

114's Auton should own quite hard, what with the dual cameras and all (And that huge freakin' arm thing iirc)

You can damage your ramp, if you want, but moving the rack
would damage it and the electrical connections to the target lights
that run under the carpet. Robots that damage field components in
this manner would be penalized. This is a distinct difference
with the FIRST rules where moving the rack itself was fair game.

Quick question

would we still get penalized if it was an accident or we couldn't get loose or whatnot?

eugenebrooks 12-09-2007 21:51

Re: CalGames 2007 full with 30 teams!

To fully clarify the rack situation, we will be using a wooden rack
that was donated by one of our participating teams and has been
getting upgraded by a volunteer. It will sport four target lights,
just as the official rack did, and the rack will be positioned in
the center of the field (approximately) with the target lights at
45 degrees (approximately) to the ends of the field. The rack
will not be moved between matches. The wiring to provide power
to the target lights is 12 gauge, using FlatWire running under the
carpet up into the middle of the rack. Movement of the rack by
a robot puts the wiring at risk and therefore will not be allowed.

The power supply for the lights will be operated at 13.6 volts,
and about 90 feet of wire (round trip) will serve the four lights,
all drawing their current on the single run of 12 gauge wire.
For reference, 12 gauge wire is .00187 ohms per foot and a
single target light draws about 1.4 amps (ours has a little muffin
fan installed to keep it cool). That should be sufficient
information for you to work out the operating voltage of the
target lights and tune your camera with a light operating at
that voltage. Of course, we did say the rack would be
stationary, didn't we...

Just in case a stationary rack, alone, is not inspiring enough,
Ken Leung did say that there would be an extra 15 points
in it for each keeper, didn't he. He also said that there would
be two awards for the most autonomous points scored.
I am looking foward to lots of autonomous action at the Cal
Games next month.

The 2007 FIRST rules still apply:

7.3.3.3 Robot Actions
<G33> Field interaction - ROBOTS may push or react against any elements of the field, provided there is no damage or disruption of the field elements. ROBOTS may not grab, grasp, grapple, or attach to any field structure. Robot may not HANG GAME PIECES on the Vision System Targets , or otherwise block visual access to the Vision System Targets. If a ROBOT violates this rule, the head referee will give one warning. If the referee determines that the TEAM is disregarding the warning, their ROBOT will be disabled for the remainder of the match.

<G34> Field damage - The head referee may disable a ROBOT that has damaged the playing field, carpet, goals, GAME PIECES, etc. if the head referee feels that further damage is likely to occur. The head referee may require corrective action, such as eliminating a sharp edge, and re-inspection, before the ROBOT will be allowed to compete in subsequent matches.

With the emphasis that the rack will be stationary and vulnerable to damages.

Obviously it will be a judgment call by the Head Ref. The first accident will receive one warning. Repeated accidents will be disabled for the remainder of the match.

If it is determined that the design of your robot is the cause of these repeated accidents, you will have to work on your robot to correct that issue.

We simply need to be careful when we are dealing with only one wooden rack that will last until the end of the day.

Team 2144 (Sacred Heart Prep) is quite excited to be coming. The only expected modification to the RADbot will be to redistribute our weight so that we can lift two robots as designed. Hopefully this will fix our ramp's tipping problem we unfortunately discovered in the elimination rounds at FIRST. As we weighed in at about 119.7 pounds, there's not much else we can do. Look out for the team playing defense and scoring 60 point bonuses! (hopefully, anyways...)

We'll see you all there!

Interesting...I wonder who pulled out.

Anyways, Team 115 is ready to put El Toro X back in action, with few changes, if any, to the robot. The only difference is that we hope to improve our autonomous to try to take advantage of the keeper bonus.

Also, this will be my first time going to Cal Games(I didn't go last year), so I'm especially excited!

Correct. While I am sad that 2135 will not be prepared in time to compete at CalGames, I am excited to see what 254's Autonomous mode will do at CalGames this year. I was at Fall Classic about a week ago, and 968's Bot #1 and #2 both did very well in keeper scoring.

All in all, we have an incredible event coming up this weekend. Most of the details have been worked out ahead of time, so now we are just ready to do the work to put on the competition.

30 teams will be a new high for WRRF. We are using a new facility at Woodside High School, and there are an incredible amount of work that needs to be done before and after the event. It won't be without its challenges, but with the support of all the teams attending, I am confident we will pull it off.

Are you guys ready for this?

997 is super excited to go, almost more so to get to take the train down then we are about competing :)

we to have made some mods to our robot, We've increased the lift from 12.4 to about 13 inches on all sides, in case robots are heavy on one side. Also, taking some constructive criticism from Team 254 in Atlanta, we added back stops to our robots platforms.

and I've been practicing driving the robot in high gear!
since we cut down enough weight to add in our own little modified gear shifter, our robot now has a Low and High Gear! We'll be moving faster then ever before :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

EDIT: Yikes, typos :P

Thanks and congratulations to everyone who made Cal Games a great event!

Wanna know why everything went so smoothly? Because you guys all helped! It was great to see so many dedicated volunteers and team members working hard to set-up and tear down.

Also a big thanks to WRRF for putting on such a fun event and such useful workshops.

And of course, I must thank our amazing alliance partners 254 and 852. I honestly don't know how we managed to pick such an amazing alliance, had we been at the championships I think we could have won :D

Also, a big shout out to all the teams that had to travel excessive distances to compete - like 997, 973, 980, 692, 852, 701 and any of the other Sacramento-area teams.

Also, where was Harker 1072? I didn't see their robot.:(

With luck, spinmunky will be updating all our videos to TBA and Youtube (including the on-board feed from our robot :D)

CAL games this year was great! Although we did not make it to the elimintaions, it was fun and helpful for our new drivers.
Congratulations to all the teams that won awards. Congratulations to 100, 254, and 852 for winning.
Most importantly, thanks to everyone who made this event possible by helping out. Thanks to 100 for being a great host, Ken, and WRRF for putting on this great event.

That's wonderful! Does anybody have any photos they could upload of the event? There were so many wonderful machines that I really wanted to take a closer look at but never found a moment to. I would also love to see photos of the event, the teams, the matches, just everything! You all made the day so fast-paced, exciting, and welcoming that I was too busy being happy to ever even take my camera out of the bag. Thanks so much.

Cal Games 2007 was a really great high-quality action packed event! I had lots of fun. Thanks to the event organizers and all the volunteers and teams that made it possible.

If anyone has any videos of the matches, if you could get them online and link us up that would be great! Thanks.

Re: CalGames 2007 full with 30 teams!

CalGames was fun. The competition, the seeing people we hadn't seen in a while, the training of freshies, etc. I have to admit, watching/helping 840 scramble to get a new transmission on in time for match 15 was fun (albeit kind of stressful). We gave them our spare tranny and told them to sit out of match 15 so they could repair their 'bot, but due to field delays and such, they made it down to the field JUST in time for the match (With about 30 secs until the bots were to take the field).

Getting freshman trained on various facets of robotics competitions (Preventive Maintenance, scouting, etc) was also kind of interesting, in a somewhat sad sort of way. Sure, I trained freshmen, but while doing so I also realized that I only have two more builds with the team, and then I'd be gone and off to school in Arizona.

Ah well, I ramble. Thanks to all the teams that showed up, Congrats to those who won, And thanks to the WRRF and Team 100 for making this event possible. I can't wait to see you all at SVR/Davis '08.

Congratulations to ALL the teams that competed! And long bursts of clapping hands recognizing the many volunteers who worked since May of this year to put on the 2007 Northern California Robot Games! [I'm walking today instead of limping, and that's amazing to me (compared to last year :) )]

Behind the scenes looks: :yikes:
  • Marooned in Mountain View:
Thursday night... 26' Truck (with Masonite underlayment and field carpet) brake system goes kaput! Ken, Alvin, Ceal and Tim spend hours on street waiting for mechanic, a little sushi, and then suspenseful time following Ceal and Tim's Escape, while 26 ' truck trembled and quaked behind us four and the mechanic sweated as he drove it to Woodside... whew! we made it. Truck is towed out the next day...[Ceal sweats about insurance and such :ahh: ]
  • Friday Rain at Woodside:
Rain began early...volunteers emptied the "broken-brakes truck", dodging rain drops, the field carpet is going down, and then...
  • Another phone call to Trucking company....
26' Truck #2 with all the contents of the 10x20 storage locker (more carpet, the pit stuff, electrical cords, etc. etc.) won't start! We can't move it near the gym...Luckily Woodside's custodial staff (electric cart and forklift) come to the rescue! More rain...Alvin gets soaking wet with another mechanic... starter fluid required now to start this truck...
  • Rack leaves Craig's Garage (YEAH!!)
Next, a truck from Oregon team, Alvin's vehicle, and Tim's Escape drive across the Bay to Berryessa to pick up rack (in sections), drive back across the Bay to Woodside, assemble the rack, ladders are involved (and we won't say who...). Smooth... no issues! Yeah!
  • And the rest of the field & pits....
Meanwhile, the pits have been efficiently taped out, the electronics are put together, audio/computers set up, and as Cory said...mucho folks made that happen!!
  • Out by 10:30 PM!!
Now that was just Friday :yikes:

cheers,

Thanks guys, had a great time at Cal-Games! Did better than we thought we did, but it still would've been so sweet to beat The Wildhats and Cheesy Poofs at the same time knowing how good you guys are. (our number 1 and 2 rivals) Well we'll probably see you guys at Nationals this year. Good luck!
