[FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
OK folk. Time to screw on those thinking caps. FIRST has released this years game hint. Even if you're not involved in FTC this is great practice for the FRC game clue.
So here it is..... "Teams: Our FIRST Tech Challenge Staff would like to slip you a little hint for this year's game! The game will be released during our Kickoff on September 19, 2007 on the www.usfirst.org website, so please watch for updates. Now let's get guessing... There once was a team from old Worcester, who pondered FIRST's game hint together. "It's a ringer of a game; what a curious name! It's got two of the seventeenth letter." Go Teams!" WOOT! I like game hints! |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
I already have it nailed--it's got something to do with Jessica Boucher's and Andy Grady's wedding.
Andy proposed to Jess at BattleCry this year, which was hosted by 190--a particularly old team in Worcester, MA. The seventeenth letter of the alphabet is Q--what an engagement ring would look like when oriented right. And ringer? Come on, now. ;) |

::sigh::
Little to do with your time! :p |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
The 17th letter could also be interpreted as the 17th letter of the hint, which is the letter "M"
I'm guessing its gonna be like M___ M____ ex. Mayhem Mission, but less lame |

"Quisp and Quake"
Your job will be to find 37-year-old breakfast cereals and douse them in Worcestershire sauce in an attempt to make palatable feed for the FRC gerbils. |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
"It's a ringer of a game;
what a curious name! It's got two of the seventeenth letter." the two of the seventeenth letter could also mean the 17th letter thats inside the quoted part which would be E |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
what if the 17th letter isn't Q. In the greek alphabet it is RHO. which in math mean's Spherical Coordinate System. Im not sure where im going with this but its a thoery. and the term "RINGER." Ringer is a game of marbles that i used to play when i was younger. Maybe we have to get the robot to play marbles with i dont know tennis balls or something like that. That would include the coordinate system and ringer. Now getting worchester into in it is going to be fun....

Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
I believe the clue refers to the letter Q - and therefore the word CUE. As in Pool Cue. The game piece will have two sticks - called cue(s).
Now for the fun part, pick up the cue with your robot, and duel with another robot like a knight in shining armor - jousting style!! The ringer part is of course curious - perhaps referring to HOW horseshoes is scored rather than horseshoes itself (close counts). We shall know shortly. |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
your all assuming that this hint is in base 10 . .
|
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
If it is Q, and they are together side by side, there are only a few possibilities. None of which seem to make sense as of yet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qq |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
Well, if it is dealing with the word cue, it may be that there are "ringers" that a robot must get onto the up-standing cue sticks or get "cue balls" through a ring shape with a "cue stick" that the robot has to hold. which would make it kind of like hockey. WPI is home to hockey, baseball and football.
So, you end up with your "cue sticks" (hockey sticks), your "cue balls" (baseballs[though probably tennis balls will be used]), and your goal, which may be in a circular shape (like a ringer), instead of the squared u in football. However, the goal may be in the squared u shape because of the q (17th in alphabet) or e (17th in hint quote). If we are talking about an M, it is being "held" in Massachusetts. But, those are just my thoughts. :D I can't wait until we actually know!!!! :D |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
There once was a team from old Worcester,
who pondered FIRST's game hint together. Quote:
I don't know how "Old" (meaning UK?) Worcester (which I was thinking of when I first read it) is pronounced -- according to Wikipedia it looks the same way. Obviously some other Worcester than these two, or the Hinters are not from around here. "Curious name" might mean a misspelling of a word -- Q instead of "KW". Other than that, Bilfred's idea is as good as any, except the engagement ring was very large and red ... or maybe blue? ... and full of air. Maybe the game involves Jess and Andy on the field -- is FIRST giving them a six week whirlwind tour next March with the wedding in Atlanta? |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
or perhaps "ringer" refers to a game peice, and the game is a smaller version of Rack'N'Roll
|
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
I think the game will be a word-game resembling Boggle.
A bunch of letters will be dumped on the playing field and the teams will have to arrange them into words to create a nonsensical limerick. You get bonus points if your limerick superficially appears to make some sense; but really doesn't. You earn a perfect score if all the referees and judges at the event each come up with different interpretations of your limerick's intent. ;) :) Blake |

Quoits is a ring toss game, which starts with 'Q'
|
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
This hint is slightly disturbing for those of us on 190 who are designing this year's Savage Soccer game, namely that we selected our game this past Tuesday...and it has been referred to as game "Q" since a week ago today...

We are also a team from Worcester, and we are just as lost as everybody else!

No one in this thread has yet to mention "Q" from James Bond, who was the head of fictional British Secret Service division that designed all wicked sweet gadgets in the movies/novels.

Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
There is also another possiblity. As a programmer, most languages begin counting at zero. With this in mind, it would make the 17th letter an 'R' as in 'Rack and Roll'

Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
No more guessing. :(

Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
Does anyone have any idea how "Old Worcester" relates to the game?

well it seems the "quoits" idea was very close...
ring toss = placing rings on poles/bases =) |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
Not only don't I see how Worcester ties into it, but I also am not convinced that "Worcester" and "Together" rhyme.
EDIT: Actually, it may have something to do with the use of PVC Rings |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
Maybe they took their idea from here:
A king who never could rhyme Declared limerick writing a crime, But late in the night All the scribes would write Poems without rhyme or meter. I'm sure the clue would have made much more sense if it rhymed. :) And since I'll probably never have another chance, here's a mathematical limerick (by Jon Saxton): ( (12 + 144 + 20 + 3 Sqrt[4]) / 7 ) + 5*11 = 92 + 0 . ;) |
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
hahaha
what a marvelous idea. a robotics wedding.:yikes: I like the "17th letter of the alphabet" idea. And the first thing that popped into mind when I heard "Ringer of a game" was horse shoes. Maybe it's some modified version of horseshoes?? And besides, anything that begins with Q's, or has two Q's in the same word, must be weird. . . :p haha Kick off is so far away! They torture us by giving these hints so early!:ahh: ~Casey |

Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
Worcester = Closest town we could think of that ended in 'R'. Our GDC came up with this idea themselves, and in a rather unconventional way...
|
Re: [FTC]: 2007 FTC Game Hint Released
Could they be talking about Gompei and the Herd? (thats only 16 letters tho)
It is an old Worcester team..... (yeah, yeah, I know, it's FRC, but hey, It's the first thing that came to mind when I heard "Worcester") Jacob |
