Team Makeup?

What is the makeup of your team?

Are most of them band/orchestra/choir students, are most of them jocks, or are most of then neither of the above or part of another group?

Everybody on our school is at least a second degree Geek. I'm probably a 4th or 5th.

;)

Our school has no band people, no jocks, etc

but then again it's a 240 student "alternative" public school that focuses on technology (Hence, Tech High).

Our team is mostly IB kids. We try to attract the "regular" students who make up the majority of the school but they are mostly just not interested.

Primarily honors students. The engineering side is made up primarily of honors kids who will go on to do engineering or something similar in college, PR is honor kids who hang out at gas stations and will end up being lit and/or business majors. No one is legitimately popular or anything, but most of us are known decently throughout our classes.

well my team has to be different here... we are actually made up of mostly athletes. they split their time between the shop and their sport (i was one of them when i was in high school). and they do a great job at keeping up with both and they have a lot fun doing both too.

Where is "well rounded" on the list?

I guess that would be "a group not mentioned".

Actually that is an option. "No group has a majority its pretty even."

Hmm. We've got our share of band kids. Very few jocks. However, I'd say the majority are known as robotics kids. MORT is their top priority.

I should point out that our IB kids do play alot of sports (soccer mostly).
The more EC you do the better it looks on your college application.

Originally, Our team consisted completely of students in either band, ROTC, or both. Recently though, we seem to have moved away from that with our team split between sports players, band, and no-other-club-to-describe-them-students.

Our team is a little different. Most of the kids are in a small social group that some may call odd balls. But as it is there is only like ten or so kids on the team. I however am the odd ball of the team and am as may would call an "Aggie".

Re: Team Makeup?

Our team is mostly the types of kids who have tried sports, tried band, tried orchestra, etc., but really didn't quite feel a true passion for it. Instead, they have a passion for science and engineering. Some are honors kids, some are AP kids, some take mostly CP classes. Our team is made up of kids who never really seemed to "fit in" into the jocks, the preps, the band geeks. etc. during middle school and they come to the high school and meet a group of people who they can sit around and have hour-long discussions on the merits of open source software with.

Of course, that isn't to say that we don't have athletes, musicians, or artists on the team. Sure, we have plenty of them. I'm a musician myself (violin), but no matter what our other interests are, we all share the eagerness to learn all about science, technology, and engineering through building robots.

Actually I meant kids that fit into more than one group. For example, we have band kids that are also athletes or are on Quiz Bowl.

This a quiet opinion of mine. Students that make up robotics teams are interested/curious in many areas. They want to know why and why not and what if. They aren't too interested in no, that won't work, or it's good enough. That's a big part of why the engineers and teachers stick with FIRST. (Because they are the same way.) It's a talented, richly diverse, and challenging group - a robotics team. That's what makes it cool.

Our team makeup is red and blue face paint.

...

Hmm? What's that you say?

Oh, that's very different! Never mind.

Seriously, we have all kinds. I don't think there's any overlap with the football team, but some members haven't been able to attend meetings yet this year because of marching band.

My first thought on seeing the title was a memory from WMR a few years ago: As a local TV camera was coming down our aisle, I warned those in our pit areas "The camera is coming, check your hair and makeup!". A girl from team 74 replied "Who has time to worry about stuff like that?". In a later year, I saw her on TV enthusiastically talking about robotics and her team.

Back to the topic, BOB has always had a good mix of kids interested in all kinds of activities. The current team has students in band, on the golf, soccer, tennis, cross country teams, and proably many other groups I'm unaware of. There also are many who are very active in activities such as church groups, scouts, etc.

I'm not sure why this should be a quiet opinion Jane. I think many of us would agree with this statement. It should be part of mentor training to understand that, in general, these kids are different in exactly the way you described.

It is the lens that I look through, usually when we are at a competition - and I see all of the teams together. I enjoy watching the interactions in the pit area and in the competition venue, itself, knowing what it took to get to the point of teams having their robot competing on the field. The view of the talented students and their mentors and all the volunteers is a goosebumper every single time. I guess that is why it is quiet. Thank you Mark.

Re: Team Makeup?

Part of what makes are team great is the diversity of the students on the team. There is definitely several band students, but just about every group is represented on the team. This year's team has a student from each of the following groups: volleyball, National Honor Society, softball, track, soccer, chess, cross-country, quiz bowl, International Thespian Society, baseball, the literary magazine and the band. Having students with so many different backgrounds helps push our team to new areas and brings in people with completely different ideas to add to our team.

Oh, that's very different! Never mind.

You must spread around some Reputation before giving it to Alan Anderson again.

On 1293, I'd say most (but by no means all--you're looking at one of the exceptions) of the team overlaps with the science teams of the schools. On 1618, it's more spread out; student council gets underrepresented, mainly because that's a large time-consumer there, but we seem to get the whole spread.

But we also get theater kids, and football videographers (only 1 which is me :D )

It turns out I was wrong. I found out today that one of our rookies is on the football team.

(Our lead teacher is a football coach.)
