The feed was great, but if i could make a small request, could you guys not put the over drive splash screen up every chance you get, that would be great. Tis a great feed, the qualitiy is great and the music is good, too. But, it would be cool to see some of the action on the field, such as switching robots and what the announcer does between matches, etc.

Agreed, overall they have conducted the regional well. My only request in some ACDC!!

Its a shame we weren't able to head down there again this year, but one of our alumni may be volunteering (he goes to Clemson). If you see someone with a volunteer badge that says "Alex Hulette," I'd appreciate it if you could tell him I said hi and that we went with the crazy-fast arm design.

I just got back from the team social. It was awesome. I went to eat, and then bowled a couple games. Went right in and found an empty lane. Also very short and fast moving lines for food. There was a wide variety of food at the dining hall. Other regionals need to take notes from this one! Great job by the planning committee. What did the rest of you think? (the ones that went)

I whole-heartedly agree. The team social was a blast! Many of the FLASH members had a great time bowling.

665 is seeded 30th right now. They were 2-6-0 today, not doing so well but you never know how the third day will turn out. They have 2 more matches tomorrow morning.

Yeah, we are ranked 30th, but we're happy with our performance so far. We can hurdle pretty consistently, and we're working better than we did at FL where we were seeded 17th, we've just run into a bit of bad luck with alliance partners tipping and the like. Plus we won Innovation in Controls, so that's a bonus for us.

I'll take this feedback in with me this morning and see if we can get more team shots and changeover action into the feed.

For those of you who cannot be there live, it is the best regional I have ever been to. With only 36 teams, we are running 10 matches per team and everyone is getting to know everyone else.

On behalf of team 1251, I would like to extend a congratulations to the winning alliance of 386, 1758 and 2183 (i believe that was the team sorry if I got it wrong). You guys were an excellent alliance, I just wish our robot's elevator was functioning for the remainder of our semi final matches with them.

Also congrats to 342, 343 and 393/804, you all had a great run, I thought you woulda had it.

Re: 2008 Palmetto Regional

It's a little interesting to be the spectator at Palmetto for once. After waking up around 5:20 to get to Clemson in time, my girlfriend and I bore witness to some crazy matches (perhaps to match the crazy decor--orange and purple, really? ;))

First, thanks to Donn Griffith for completely blowing my cover this morning in the pits.

Big ups, of course, to our districtmates at 1398 on their second Chairman's win. They have figured something out. (When they were reading the award, Keenan had figured it out already. They were having to whack themselves with pillows to keep in check. Energetic much?)

Further ups to 386, 1758, 2483, 342, 343, and 804/393 for what may well be the most epic battle I've seen in five years in the finals. Whoever recorded the feed has to get this series on TBA; it was that intense from the stands.

Much respect to anyone whose robot is still working. This year was living proof that the alliance that lasts the longest gets the gold.

Thanks, of course, to all the old friends I crossed paths with of varying geography. (If I was just here for the robots, I'd have watched the webcast. It's the people that get me to drive 250 miles in a day.)

A shout-out to Looking Forward, who was in the building today if pit admin was to be believed. Hope you were impressed.

And, lastly, a pause for applause for Mike Bryan of 342 who is moving up I-26 to the Upstate in the near future. Mike was their team leader from the start, and whatever he's done is working--year-in and year-out, 342 is a top-notch team. Upstate teams, I think it's now recruiting season. ;)

Close, it was 2483.
I had a great time at Palmetto. Wish we would have won, but too many things going wrong (gremlins). Great finals matches (4 of them). I have to give a huge shout out to the Palmetto Regional Chairman's award winner, Team 1398, the Robo-Raiders. Awesome job guys. I hope to see everyone again next year, if not in Atlanta.

The Looking Forward announcement was my idea of a prank, but it really got people looking all around.

Re: 2008 Palmetto Regional

Well I finally made it to a regional in person.
Someone...I'll be nice and not point them out said the weather should be fine... if the engineer thing don't work out you have a future as a weatherman.
But thanks to the rain my work was rained out and I was only a hundred or so miles away so... managed to get there just in time for the semi-finals :D
To anyone thats never been to the event in person... the webcast do NOT do justice to actually being there and feeling the vibe.
What a show! From what I've been told Champs is even more exciting and fun.
To the folks that put together the Palmetto and run it I say thanks.
I've seldom have enjoyed a free event as much as a FIRST event! :D
Great job folks.
To 2483, 386, & 1758... congrats on winning the gold.
Was awesome seeing a team from NC winning!

As a side note; Yeah I have in the past expressed a slightly negative view of the dancing that goes on at these regionals, and had no plans of becoming one of the bad dancers but... well the excitement was just too hard to resist and before I knew what was happening I was joining in with the crowd in the stands. :ahh:
Also... I just like to say how impressed and I will admit surprised how welcoming and polite the people (students and adults) were there.
I heard no swearing, no bragging or thrash talking that can be often heard at any highschool sporting event one might go to.
Instead the few pits I stopped at didn't mind an outsider checking out there robots and were eager to answer a question or show off a feature of their robot and didn't mind breaking it down so a Protronie could understand.
My hat is off to all the teams and officials that put on such an interesting and exciting event.

That was the most intense finals I've ever been in!!343 and 804, thank you so much for playing with us; by no means did you let us down. Big congrats to 2483, 386, & 1758. I really would have liked to had 386 on our alliance, but it is no wonder would they didn't last. great job guys. Between your auton. , defense, and laps, you guys took away our thunder( ok, bad humor).

Like Drake said, all the gremlins came out during the finals. 342 lost the ground going to the distribution block and had problems clamping it back because of a striped screw. 343's limit switch malfunctioned, bring their arm up in auton. I almost find it funny, we are built very similarly to 1726 and we faced the same fate as them:rolleyes: But despite my whining, 2483, 386, & 1758 won completely fair and with great displays GP.

A note to LookingForward: don't be so quick to right off Palmetto as anything but intense and exciting.

Excellent regional, well run and organized.

OMG that competition was so intense I think i had like 5 heart attacks.....The team work was as fierce as ever in the finals. I would like to congrat the alliance of 342,393/804, and 343 those where some close matchs that I realy dont even think you lost. You were a hard alliance to beat and we hope to see you in alanta for sure. And to the other teams that were in the competition We want to congrat everybody because you all did your best and next time we go agaisnt you we hope that every match is as intense as the last time :D.

Ps: The teams in the Qf and the Sf you were also a great team and want to say that you did great no matter what anybody says :D O and one team never makes a team great it is the TEAMWORK that 386 and 1758 did with strategy and helping to make the best out of every situation.

Team 2430 would like to say congratulation to team 281 for winning the GP award. Without them our team would not be were we are at right now. They truly deserve this award; we were honored to have them our alliance partner.

We would also like to thank Clemson and the volunteers for hosting such a wonderful event. Our first regional was awesome because of what they have done.

Ya, I was there... well driving the robot there. and I would like to see some video. Not just of 1261, but others. I was in the pit most of the time so I never really got to see some of the other bots in action! If anyone can provide video for the Palmetto Regional, then you will be amazing.

1319 would like to thank 1249 for picking us to go into battle with. 2187 was also a great alliance partner. We gave it our all in taking it to 3 matches in the semi finals, although it was not as many as the five quarter finals matches. Our robots held up through all of these matches, and if things had fallen a little more in our favor I am sure the three of us would have lasted until the very end.

David Guzman 31-03-2008 12:38

Re: 2008 Palmetto Regional

First of all, a big thank you to the volunteers that made the event a success.

I would like to give a special thank you to our alliance partners; 845 and 1270. It was fun to revive the 2005 Florida Alliance. Sorry we couldn't go all the way. 845 your robot was a great hurdler and your hybrid mode was impressive. 1270 you guys were able to accommodate to different strategies, the best second round pick in my opinion.

Unfortunately during Semi-final match two, one of the Banebot Planetary gearboxes that drive our elevator binded. A six minute time-out jusy wasn't enough time to fix it, forcing us to do just laps. This event has thought us many lessons and we are glad that it happened here and not at the Championship event.

Congratulations to the winning alliance. 2483, 386 and 1758. You guys deserve it. We were so happy that 386 was in the winning alliance, you guys were a great help during the whole event. Team Voltage saw that we had a small team at the event, so before our matches they gave us scouting sheets on our opponents. You guys are awesome and you deserve the win.

I would also like to thank team 1249 and 1319 for being the great neighbors. Both of this teams provided us with parts, materials and tools. Thank you so much.

Gene. The scoring computer replaces the ties with the score of the replayed match, so there is no archive of those scores. As I remember, the first Quarterfinal between Alliance 4 and Aliance 5 was a 72-72 tie (I am sure of the match, but not of the score), and the first Finals match was a 52-52 tie (this one I am sure of the score).

There was only 1 tie in the quals. Match 18
11:48 AM 18 RED (2430 1466 1225) BLUE (1876 2187 2483) tied with 28 pts

Thanks for the GREAT job managing the Alliance Selection.

No you are correct. There were 2 ties in the Finals. Match 1 was a 52-52 tie, and Match 3 was a 70-70 tie.

Thanks to all of the Volunteers at the Palmetto Regional; we had a great time. Thanks especially to 2483 and 1758, our amazing alliance partners. Re: 2008 Palmetto Regional

I've been waiting to post to see if everyone was happy with the event, because I can tell you that everyone down by the field, the scorekeepers, refs, MC, and Announcer were THRILLED beyond description at the entire event.

This was my 4th year as announcer and I thought I had seen it all, until Saturday. Like an earlier poster said, we about had 5 heart attacks watching the speed, endurance, energy agility, maturity, and strength of the robots AND team members.

The circumstances that necessitated rematch in the semis was the toughest call I have ever seen made at a regional. In retrospect, running the rematch is supported by rule T16 which says a rematch is warranted whenever an event occurs that affects game play or score caused by the field, equipment… or field personnel. A scoring error clearly falls under this rule. But if the scoring computer program is well written, it should have disallowed any ball bonus score over 24 points, making the possibility of a 4 ball score impossible. We did not know at the time and still do not know if that type of data validation is present in the scoring system. With no paper score sheets, and a rule against video review of play, there was no choice but to rerun it.

The reason I bring up the situation is because I was so impressed by the patience and reaction of all the observers through delay and the ups and downs and uncertainty. Talk about Gracious Professionalism, WOW!

All of the goals of FIRST were met or exceeded by this bunch of folks who got together last weekend in Clemson. We might have arrived as strangers, but we all left as best friends. There was no foe or opponent. There was no win or lose. Sure there is the thrill of victory for the highest score, and some teams were more successful than others. But we all came together for a common goal.

There is nothing worse as a volunteer coming away from an event with a bad taste. On the other hand, there is nothing better than coming away with the elation we felt seeing the defeated teams cheering on the survivors, and seeing the students agonize with SMILING FACES when their robots deployed arms early, tipped over, or failed to deliver the extra 2 points at the buzzer.

These memories and lessons learned will last a lifetime.

Congrats to everyone!

Re: 2008 Palmetto Regional

Our 5 match quarter-final w/ 1319 and 2187 was maybe the craziest set of matches I had ever seen until the finals. Except for the chain on our arm slipping in one of the quarter-final matches, I don't think there were any other mechanical problems with the alliance.

1319 and 2187 were awesome alliance partners. 2187 made 9 laps in the quarter-final match we tied, and 1319 kept the ball in the air all afternoon. They made us look good.

The competition was great with a lot of great 'bots. I think that shows in the close scores in the elimination rounds.

Hope to see everyone next year.

I just want to thank everybody for a great regional. Everyone there was friendly, helpful, and just great...plus it was in Clemson, and you can't get much better than being right next door to Death Valley!

Big thanks to 1251, and 1270 for being such a great alliance. I know I'm just a college student mentor, but 845 means as much to me now as it did when i was a student. I didn't see a team there that didn't have an impressive design in some way. These teams shouldn't be ashamed of a thing..even if they didn't win anything, they went to a regional and acted in a highly respectable manner, with an awesome machine, and had a great time while doing it.

Gotta shout out to 342 and 343 as well, excellent designs, and ya'll played some great matches there in the finals.

:) Thank you very much. Shout out right back at you. 845 really stepped it up when 1251 had the lifter problems! I love playing with you guys. One of your drivers and I have a long history racing dragsters and that rivalry;) showed Thursday during the exhibition match. Re: 2008 Palmetto Regional

This year's regional was one of greatest for our team. We're a VERY small team. Probably no more than 10 dedicated students worked on our bot and only 4 attended the regional. Reaching the finals was a FIRST for our team.

I would like to thank the Forsyth Alliance (1746) and M'Aiken Magic (1102) for picking us to be on your alliance. We had fun battling those epic 5 matches in one double elimination round against the same alliance. :D

Speaking for our team and mentors, it really meant a great deal to them to get picked and go onto the finals.

Thanks again and we're looking forward to seeing everyone at the Palmetto regional again next year!

Now that everyone has had some time to recover from the busy build and competition season, the Regional Planning Committee would like to here from YOU! Please take a few minutes to answer a couple of questions about the Palmetto Regional.

1. What worked, what did you like best?
2. What didn't work, how can we make it better for next year?

Thanks for your input.

Re: 2008 Palmetto Regional

Coming in on Saturday as a spectator, I did appreciate the gratuitous amounts of parking around the arena. (I'll give them a pass on the traffic flow because of the race going on in the area.) The exterior banners were also a nice touch.

On the down side, the arena floor plan left the event with fewer teams and even less space for them. Aside from the tight surroundings in the pit for both teams and spectators, it also felt like it harmed the depth of the event compared with years past. FRC is not about the robots, but the robots are the hook. The problem, of course, is how do you fit more teams into that arena--I'm not sure if you can without things getting a little intense (or, rather, in-tents).

What felt like a wash to me was the staircases to the floor. They were good for catching safety glasses, but the traffic flow felt awkward. A little more signage at the concourse level might help there.
