i switched to winXP x64, to Vista back to 32-bit xp. vista and 64-bit stuff just isint where it needs to be yet

i've beeen running vista 64bit since the release of the final version back in november of last year with almost no problems, besides my mother going on my computer and figuring out a way to get spyware

vista is the new xp :)

Vista will be the new XP when I can install any recent (within the past five or so years) Windows program I want on it and not have to worry about compatibility issues.

I have used vista since the early betas, and often I find the people that are the most outspoken about vista have only spent 10 or 15 minutes using it. I have yet to find a program that complains about installation, or permissions, since because I turned off UAC. There are a few minor bugs to still be worked out, but every OS goes through that early adopter period, where exposure to varying styles of computing reveals issues you'd never think of.

I have had extremely few problems with vista. All the programs that looked like they might be problematic have had a easy solution. While I don't think Vista has enough new stuff to be really special I see no problem with it.

Thoughts:

I have an Acer Laptop now that came loaded with Vista on a partitioned Hard Drive (120 GB, 2 60 GB partitions). So I loaded Ubuntu on the other half.

For my Calculus studies I actually still need Windows to view solutions and to study them, so I have actually spent time to get Vista set up for main use just in case.

ON THIS PARTICULAR ACER Vista runs just fine with a few slowdowns. Notice the capital letters: the machine I run has 2 Gigs of RAM, probably the biggest factor in how it runs. I have seen other laptops with Vista that just plain suck and are meant for XP at its maximum performance.

That all said, I like how Microsoft is extending XP's stay. It will allow XP to be utilized on more powerful machines, and since it has become a robust OS over its run, this just means we will probably see machines that will run super smooth for the power user/business user/student user.

I mean, other than the pretty factor, Windows XP has Windows Blinds if you want an Aero style GUI (or other better ones for that matter). Vista can take a back seat at the moment.

I have used Vista for about six months now and I like. I a computer with 2g ram and a dual core with a clock speed of 1.7, it is awesome. It runs like a champ. The only people saying it is "not as good" are people that have used it on the demo computers at the store or something like that.


When I really want some speed out of my system I just set my appearance options to the lowest they go. No fancy transitions or anything and I can run 3d max all I want with no lag.

Heh, Vista has shyed me away from MS OS's until about 2-3 years after the OS comes out -- permanently.

I bought a laptop with Vista -- my old Solidworks doesn't work in Vista, only 1 out of 3 of my games works in Vista, the wireless randomly drops its connection when my work laptop (same Dell make/model but with WinXP) doesn't, oh, and with home networking randomly my computers will disappear in Vista's version of Network Places. To write a software driver for Windows Vista so a custom circuit works off the USB port like it does in Linux and WinXP -- well, let's not get started. I don't have $400 for the SDK to do it "properly".

i have a single core laptop with 512 megs of ram, i loaded vista ultimate on it as well as xp. I turned off all useless services and my machine runs perfectly with both systems, True i crashed vista 7 times in 30 minutes the for time i installed it but since then its been rock solid for me. As for XP works like a charm.

isnt this kind of impossible because they took away the win32 api on vista (correct me if im wrong)

Win32 has been updated for Vista, and continues to be a valid way to program for Windows. 64-bit versions of Windows also support Win64, which is pretty much the same as Win32, except it expects data structures to be 64-bit. It's still the method of choice for doing OS things in C++.

It is, however, slowly being phased out in favour of more .NET-oriented things. Don't bet on it being truly gone for a long while—give it a few years after Microsoft stops using it internally for people to abandon it. Maybe after Windows 7.0 is finished, they'll get around to deprecating it.
