2008 Chesapeake Regional
In preparation for Oct. 1, welcome to all who are considering the only regional held at a major military installation! Welcome to the United States Naval Academy and the Week 3-2008 Chesapeake Regional, on the water in historic Annapolis, Maryland :)

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
It's on FIRST's website now, so I suppose the cat is out of the bag.
This season, the Capitals are making the drive up to Annapolis for their regional event. Palmetto is during the students' spring break, and travel costs this year were going to be a nonzero amount any way we sliced it--so after talking it over with everybody involved, we're hitting I-95 northbound. As someone who volunteered up there last year, I can't wait to bring the whole crew. (And no scraping off my windshield with a credit card in just a crew shirt over a T-shirt this time.) |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
I've put in a request (in triplicate) to the Lt. Col. for weather suited to sitting on the seawall while eating lunch and watching the sailboats go by.;)
There may be a bigger variety of island teams represented this year. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
The Chesapeake Regional happens to be during my Spring Break and I'm looking forward to traveling down to attend =) Plus, I have some friends at the Navl Accademy that I wouldn't mind visiting... kill two birds with one stone haha.

It's official. The jet lag regional is back in 2008, spanning 10? time zones.

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
We had to withdraw to enter our hometown regional, but by the looks of things, it looks like we will be able to squeeze in on Nov.8 as there are 2 spots left.:D For me, that's 6am sharp when I try to add the event.:ahh:
|
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
2199 will be attending. We're waiting to pay until the NASA grant winners are announced though; no matter what we will be attending though. It should be good times if anything like last year. We're going to be trying out a new scouting system and showing our new members what a regional is actually like. Hopefully the power won't go out again.

Hellooooo From the North East :)
May all the participants of FIRST and the Chesapeake Regional have a happy, healthy New Year from Team 88, TJ2. We are resting up for the release of the '08 game and looking forward to another challenge. We will be returning to the Chesapeake Regional again because of the great friendships and competition the last time that we were there. It is great to be on the Naval campus and see the historic buildings. What a great atmosphere for a super tournament. Looking forward to making many more friends and this learning experience for all. Until then, rest up because the tie dye team will be on their way. oh Yeah ??? OH YEAH !!!! Good luck to all. MOE and Team 88, TJ2 :D |

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
To Robomom and others who have participated in the past:
1. How can we confirm that we completed the vehicle forms for entering the USNA? I did this back in October and just printed a copy of what i submitted. Is this sufficient to show the guard when entering, along with ID, etc. 2. The instructions were to drop team members off at the gate if using a personal vehicle. How far is the walk to the arena if you have a personal vehicle? We may have some members doing this. Can someone provide some tips on how they enter daily and what kind of delays should we expect? Thanks, Hawaiian Kids:D |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional

I will have lots of info for you about the bus procedures and forms, the shuttle bus process, and about walking onto the "Yard." Let me get through everything that needs to be done for our kickoff :ahh: and then I'll start posting the updates on the Chesapeake website and sending all the details to the team contacts in the next couple of weeks. Halsey Field House is right next to Gate 1 where walk-ons can be dropped off and need to pass through security. Thanks. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Thanks for the updated info Robomom. For all of your hard work, we will definitely save some Hawaiian snacks specifically for YOU!!!!:D :D
Hope you like chocolates, macadamia nuts, pineapples, etc. ALOHA. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Everyone always seems to forget that their are two major colleges in Annapolis. Sure, no one at St. John's is an engineer per se, but we are still (I humbly submit) one of the most important colleges in the U.S. Message me if you want a tour or description of our 309 year old institution. Our campus is a beautiful place to chill whenever you have a chance. We destroy the USNA at basically everything.

Furthermore, it is a mistake to look at the authors of our entire curriculum as white. On just the basic reading list for the first year, we have such non-Europeans as Homer, Herodotus, Aristophanes, and Galen. And the first year is supposed to be exclusively Greek. Anyhow, anyone who is interested in broadening their horizons outside of what textbooks and professors of science and engineering tell you about the humanities should drop by. |

Chesapeake Regional Newsletter to the teams
Update #1-January 23, 2008 Welcome to all the 62 teams! Chesapeake Regional Lingo • USNA: United States Naval Academy • Halsey Field House: on the USNA, where the event is held; also home of The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center • Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium: Shuttle pick-up and drop-off on “Blue Side” parking, near the Blue Angel is off Taylor Ave. Not on the Academy grounds, but rather about 2 miles from the USNA. • Annapolis: Home of the nation’s oldest statehouse in continuous legislative use, historic 18th century seaport “city” with winding streets, cobblestone roads, limited parking, surrounded by water. City Dock, with restaurants is a 10 minute walk from Halsey. www.visitannapolis.org has an excellent visitor guide booklet you can request. Annapolis is 30-45 minutes from Baltimore and Washington DC. The closest airport is BWI. Some teams combined the trip with a visit to their representatives and to see the sights in Washington DC last year • Gate 1: Entry closest to the Halsey. Not to be confused with Gate 8, about a mile away. Team vehicles will use Gate 8. The USNA is a big place. Chesapeake Regional website: • www.chesapeakefirst.org • www.usna.edu/FIRST/ where to find bus and tool truck paperwork and access info • FIRST Regional info: http://www.usfirst.org/community/frc...nts.aspx?id=43 Access to the Academy Grounds: http://www.usna.edu/FIRST/access My team will be arriving by bus (school or charter): 1. A separate form is needed for each bus. http://www.usna.edu/FIRST/access 2. You should get a response once your form is submitted. 3. Bus will enter Gate 8 and drop off at Halsey. Exit at Gate 1. Follow the signage. 4. Driver can then drive to Stadium to park, take shuttle bus back to the Halsey for the day, return to the Stadium to pick up bus, and then return to Halsey through Gate 8 at the assigned time to pick up the students. Please do not have all the students ride the shuttle bus to return to the Stadium, as it will create the delays. 5. Make sure each person has a photo ID. School-issued student picture ID’s are accepted. Those without picture government issued or picture school ID cannot enter the USNA unless accompanied by an adult with a government issued picture ID. 6. There is some construction around the Stadium and around Halsey. Please be warned to allow extra time. My team will be arriving by van (rental or institutional): 1. Need to fill out a pass and submit no later than March 2. Vehicles without pre-approved passes will not be granted access to the USNA, no exceptions made. A separate form is available for each van. http://www.usna.edu/FIRST/access 2. You should get a response once your form is submitted 3. Van will enter Gate 8 and drop off at Halsey. Exit Gate 1. USNA Admission talks/Tours of the USNA • Information about the USNA and admissions will be available. For tours, please contact the visitor center. http://www.usna.edu/NAFPRODV/VC/ 3. Volunteering: • Still recruiting lots of volunteers to help out at the event. https://my.usfirst.org/vims/logon.lasso?page=logon • We still need referees and team queuers. • Be sure to designate “Chesapeake.” 5. Chesapeake "Team Showcase" Each year the planning committee receives requests from the teams for space to put up a booth or table, to demonstrate a product or to give-away cool stuff. We are impressed by the creativity and initiative shown by the teams. However, with 60+ teams at Chesapeake, we have a shortage of space. This year, we are going to pilot a "Showcase" area. The first 20 teams who register will be assigned a one-hour time slot on Thursday March 13, between 9-7 pm, starting on the hour. The team will be allowed a standard 2' by 6' table at a site TBD (may be in the pits). Two teams at two tables will be featured in the Showcase at the same time. Teams will be responsible for staffing this table during their assigned hour. They may display a banner on the front of the table (need to bring own tape, etc.) They may give-away items that fit the guidelines listed here: http://www.usfirst.org/uploadedfiles...D_SiteInfo.pdf. They may demonstrate a product. They may conduct a training session. No selling of products or selling/giving out food is allowed. To register, send Jenny Beatty jbeattyfirst@gmail.com the team #, the team contact for the Showcase, with their email and a brief description of what your team would like to do during your 59 minutes. An agenda of the Showcase will be given to all the teams at the Chesapeake. This is a pilot project and we will rely on the cooperation of the teams participating to make it work. We will only be able to accommodate the first 20 teams who sign up. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
A question about getting onto the grounds:
Last year my dad was able to drive on the grounds (my dad has a military / government id) without any prior approval, do you know if this still applies this year? Has anything changed? Would that be this exception: "An exception is made for private cars with handicapped tags, or DOD stickers, but be prepared to show documentation." Thanks already, Will |

Just talked to Lisa Keys today and signed up to volunteer.
Thats one less ref to look for! :P I cant wait for Chesapeake to get here! Its shaping up to be another great competition this year! Also, if any other last minute out of town visitors are looking for a place to crash I have two couches in my apartment living room (in Baltimore about 30-40 minutes from Annapolis) which would be open to sack out on. |

Also, can you guys recommend some near-by places for some affordable and good food? Or if there is some type of map of hte area provided at the regional by some teams. I know that this type of map was given out at NYC last year. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Chick and Ruth's Delly on Main St! 5-10 minute walk into town from Gate 1, or see if they'll deliver (the web site claims they deliver to the USNA). We go out of our way to stop there whenever we're passing near. Best NY Deli not in NY!

A reminder from the Chesapeake FTA Let all the teams know to Velcro their OI controls to the deck! There will be 2" wide loop Velcro 6" from the edge of the control deck for this purpose. This is essential especially if you are in #1 position. Still recruiting Student Ambassadors, Student Singers and a few spots left for the "Team Showcase." |

Due to high security levels at the USNA, there will be NO webcast from any source at the Chesapeake Regional. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Thats unfortunate. I totally understand any special security concerns. However, we still plan to, pending approval, record the regional and possibly broadcast it locally at the event.

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Hello, everyone! This is Amanda from Team 75, the RoboRaiders. Since there is less than a WEEK until Chesapeake, I wanted to wish all of the teams that will be attending the best of luck. Chesapeake is an amazing regional with all wonderful teams in attendance.
On behalf of Team 75, I would like to express that if any help is needed during the regional in any way, Team 75 will be more than happy to lend a hand. This can include anything from tools, mechanical help, volunteers, etc. If you happen to see me at the Regional (I am a little redhead wearing a red Team 75 shirt), please feel free to say hey! Can't wait to see you all! Thank you!! Amanda |

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
As I sit writing my packing list, it occurs to me that I often carry a knife to regional competitions. I was wondering if security at the academy would have a problem with this. If I do not get a sure answer, I will err on the side of caution, but I would like to bring my knife as it is a useful tool.

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
My girlfriend and I have been vacationing in New York City for the first half of the week (hooray spring break!); we'll be riding the rails down to Washington to rendezvous with the Capitals tomorrow night. I can't wait.
(Alright, so I could wait to get my iTunes movie rental to finish downloading on the slow-as-molasses wireless, but given the choice between The Matrix and Chesapeake, I think we know what I'd choose.) |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
This regional is going to rock the house with so many good teams competing for the gold. I wish everyone and their teams good luck and I will see you all tomorrow!

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
So after day one, whats every bodies thoughts, impressions, etc?
who's having trouble? who's doing well? how does Chesapeake play the game? I missed today because of classes but will be there tomorrow and Saturday. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Eh heh, having trouble...
We encountered some troubles with our superstructure today; pipes that were supposed to be screwed together weren't, causing everything above the chassis to shake apart on the field. (For those who didn't see: yes, everything.) We jettisoned our forks and focused on lapping, which appeared to work well in our later practice matches. A few more quirks worked out, and we should be prepared to have some fun. (Especially if we execute that one plan we keep talking about...) Apologies to those who had to move us (or our various pieces of field debris) aside, Billfred |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Team 1629 did quite well we had some minor issues that were all worked out and began to really get rolling in our last two practice macthes, we also got 4 almost 5 lines in hybrid, and ,managed 7 laps in one of the earlier matches (i believe tied for most laps on the day). we also got the ole catapolt up and running and managed to crush a smaller robot, sorry 1195,so all in all a good day
|
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Team 2016 had trouble in the beginning not knowing that we were missing a gear on one side of the robot :ahh: eventually fixed it and were able to get 10 laps in the 2:15 min round. :) we are greatly looking forward to tomorrows qualifying rounds.

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Our bot was good this year, but we were well, limited by our team mates in 3 of the 8 rounds.... I'm not saying they're bad, it's just that they got in the way of the objective, scored massive amounts of penalties, and blocked us (literally) from moving. We went from 4th to 32nd.... Which made me think about the ranking system that FIRST uses. I do not like the way robots are ranked based on their team mates performance. It's not fair that your robot is ranked upon the team winning. Example being, let's say you have a good bot, it's potential is limited by your team mates. Your rank goes WAY down. I thought that most of the teams had figured this out, and weren't judging by rank for alliance selection... But for alliance selection, only 2 teams outside of the top 24 were selected. Which leads me to believe that those top 8 bots simply looked at the score boards and picked whoever was in the top 24... :/
I'm just saying, the ranking system could be so much better. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Benhulett, I think it may be telling that the winning alliance consisted of the number 10, 21 and 43 ranked teams. Some people may ignore doing any scouting, but they tend to lose.

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Hoo, what a ride.
For the first time in five years, I'm not worried about our on-field performance. Qualification rounds did us few favors--those two three-on-two rounds were not my idea of fun--but we kept making consistently great runs after a lousy practice day. I had my hopes up for us to get picked, but I could tell as the second draft round progressed that market wasn't quite right for lapping robots in a regional so large. It happens. Still, to see that spark in our newbie-heavy team made the whole exercise worthwhile. This is our first regional beyond Palmetto (and our only of 2008), and it was great to play at last with teams I've known of for years (see also: 341, 709, 836) and some I've only recently crossed paths with (see also: 88*, 359, 1027, 1111). Much thanks to all of our partners, all the teams who helped us out with those odds and ends that didn't quite hit the road with the team, and of course thanks to the volunteers that put up with our antics of last-minute queuing and pipe-scattering along the way. I hope we make this trip a regular feature of our season. *Oh yeah? OH YEAH! |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Wow. I would like to start by just how much fun this regional was. Whether it was the qualification matches or the social or the finals, everything was exciting. Thanks so much to 1418 & 11, great strategy and awesome time. Thanks to everyone who came to the social as well, i hope you all had some fun. Thanks to all the volunteers that made this event possible. Hope to see everyone back next year.

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Team 339 had a great time. That quarter-final (all four matches of it) was very intense and exciting.
Thanks to 614 and 359 for helping us put up one heck of a fight. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
2199 reporting in.
@1895- yeah i know exactly which match your talking about, it wrecked us bad too. We had loaned them transmissions to get them moving and helped them fix their pnuematics too. it doesn't matter though, its over now:) Also, i agree that the selection process was a bit strange as to why certain teams picked other teams, but as was pointed out earlier, the best rose to the top. The regional on the whole seemed quieter and tamer this year ( this was my fourth visit to chessie) with some of the big teams missing. (Buzz for example) In general though we had fun, had a good, penalty free bot and learned a lot. And many congrats to the winners:) |

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
339 and 359, driver of 614 here. I thought we did great but it was pretty unfortunate that our coil jumped the pulley for the back arm. Having to queue up quickly between matches and not getting much repair time since we had 4 matches was pretty rough.
Unfortunately, that was probably my last year of directly competing since I will graduate high school this year, but I plan on mentoring team 614 next year so will hopefully see you all again |

That is exactly why scouting is so important. In my own honest opinion, some teams were great and some teams were indeed slected b/c of their rank (WRONG THING TO TRUST). Seeding CAN NOT HELP YOU DETERMINE ANYTHING IF YOU ARE THE ONE SELECTING. Scouting is a crucial part of any winning team's strategy. For example, 2590 picked us and 1980-not the highest seeded of the bunch but we rose to being finalists at Trenton. Same thing went on here. Looks like 1418 did their scouting and knew what they were doing. We were a top scorer in our matches according to scouting and watching our robot but faired poorly with other robots. This is totally not a kick at the alliance partners we had though. Everyone who helped was great and that's how we got to the top. Also, thank you guys for your congrats as well. I totally loved 1418 and 2016. They have a really nice group of students who were completely cooperative and worked so well with us. On another note, I'm still really happy about all this, but what is up with Championships? Does anyone know of some type of meeting or conference the planning committee may have? That would be wonderful info to get. Thank you so much 1418 and 2016 again. Also thank you very much 75 and 1980 and numerous other teams who were cheering for either us or our alliance, it really meant a lot. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Its plain and simple. MORT was on steroids during the playoffs.
Given the outcome and how they played, they were the best bot during the elim matches. Doing it all over again, has them the #1 pick. |

I totally forgot about our opposing alliance. I was seriously terrified about the final matches because they were highly competitive and so intense. By far the most exciting matches I've seen this year just because of how close some of them were. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Congratulations to all of 2016 and all of the other winners!
Incredible that you won a regional with only one year under your belt, living up to the rookie award last year! Hopefully I can see you guys in atlanta. Grats again |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
I just want to say thanks to team 1418 for having faith in us and picking us, and then to 2016 for molding themselves to our strategy perfectly. Taking down the 1, 5, and 3 seeded alliances in 2 matches each is not an easy task.
In my 8 years in FIRST, I think this might be one of the best examples of an "alliance" I've seen yet. The way that the 3 robots complimented each other was something truly awe inspiring. Good luck in the rest of your competitions. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
The 2008 Chesapeake Regional once again exceeded my expectations. From a volunteer stance, the competition, other volunteers and teams were amazing and everyone knew what they were doing which made it overall great competition to attend.
Congrats to 11, 1418 and 2016 for winning. I like how 1418 was collecting trackballs and leaving them around for 11 to pick up to do back to back hurdles. That was an excellent strategy on behalf of this alliance. Also major congratulations to 768 for winning Chairman’s Award. This is a well deserve honor for this incredible team On a side note, I want to mention that I am very proud of my team; 204, Eastern Robotic Vikings. It was a great competition for the team and being rank from 14th on Friday afternoon and then after all the qualification matches, being rank 20th, it was an amazing feeling to see the team succeed. |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
I would like to offer a combination of thanks and congratulations to 11 and 2016 on behalf of the current members of 1418. (They'd do it themselves, I'm sure, but I don't believe any of them has an account here, which is probably wise, all things considered...) You both had excellent robots and drivers, and I personally chalk it up to our own dumb luck that you weren't picked before we could get to you.
After the tournament, as we were all hanging around our pit trying to convince ourselves we weren't dreaming, someone from 11 came up and said "Thanks so much for listening to us and playing along with our strategy." Team 11, you are quite welcome. Having been on the drive team last year, I know exactly how frustrating it is to get blown off by alliance-mates, and I guess I managed to get that across to this year's team (my constant grousing about two or three specific incidents probably had something to do with that). There were a fair number of good robots out there, but the fact that you guys were good team players, I am certain, was the key to our alliance's success. So, now on behalf of myself, many congratulations to teams 11, 2016, and of course to my own beloved 1418: you done good. |

Congratulations to Team 768 for winning the Chairman's award. You are an outstanding team who is inspiring. Congratulations to Teams 11, 1418 and 2016 for their incredible victory at Chesapeake. Teams 1111, 88, and 888 also deserve a huge congratulations for being Finalists at Chesapeake. All of these teams had awesome robots that performed amazingly. Thanks, everyone! I look forward to seeing you all in Atlanta! Amanda |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
Teams 11, 1418 and 2016, Congratulations on winning Chesapeake! You all were just too tough for us. Not only did you consistantly put up high numbers, you also played good defense in the finals.
Teams 88 and 888, thanks for joining us on that great run to the finals. Your hurdling got us through some tight matches. Along the way we had some great matches with 339, 1027, 1418, 1629 and 1618 (and others I just can't remember right now). C Company, congratulations on winning the Rookie Allstar Award. Mr. and Mrs. Shade have taught you well. This is the best our team has ever done. We have some great memories from this regional. -Chip Team 1111 2008 Chesapeake Regional Finalist 2008 Chesapeake Innovation in Controls Award |
Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
On behalf of 2016, I would like to thank 1418 for picking 11 and us to be there alliance partners. I think the teams worked well together very well. That is the first time I have been on the field and going all the way. I hope to play with you guys again.
Congrats to 768 on Chairmans, 75 on EI and 88,1111, and 888 on having a great finals alliance. We also wanted to thank all the UK teams for coming down to Chesapeake, we hope you really enjoyed it. I hope to see you guys in Atlanta. |

Re: 2008 Chesapeake Regional
I'd just like to thanks the drive teams of 2016 and 1418. You guys were great on and off the fields, and some of the best drivers I've competed with either at Chesapeake or Trenton. See you guys in Atlanta.
