I dont remember who it was. But everytime I have run into an IFI rep they have been really cool people. And the Philly rep would make a great MC, me and Dustin think.

This was yet again an amazing competition. From working with the rookie teams to sharing stories with the veterans, this regional made me proud to say that I am apart of FIRST. When you enter the Philadelphia Regional, for me, I get the sense that we are all one big family returning to meet/greet and have one big party for two days. With friends coming from out of state to partake in the competition, we accept them in our house and make them feel welcome. Hopefully we will see them again in the near future.

To anyone that is going to the Championship event, I wish you a good luck and may you succeed.

See you all again!

I also want to give a special thanks to our IFI rep this year (I forget his name...); he had a FANTASTIC energy, and was visibly present and accessible both on and off the field.
His name was Lee.

He was pretty FANTASTIC!

As the Duct Tape Bandits let it be heard all through the arena..."LEE! LEE! LEE! LEE! LEE! LEE!" :yikes:

Philly was fantastic! The energy was amazing! I know we had the best time cheering with the Duct Tape Bandits! And eating faux sushi by the Quantum Samurai! And seeing the bright splashes of colors around the arena since we all packed in on Saturday! And getting pumped up by Shaniqua and George and Barry! And all the awesome teams and robots! So many memories in three days! And it was especially fun for me because I came to my brother's home regional and we got to play with his team! 1640 - you were real troopers and we appreciate that!

Congrats to Miss Daisy, Moe and Chuck 84! I was especially thrilled for Chuck, not just because they were next to us in the stands, but because it seemed like the cards were stacked against them in virtually every qualification match. They are proof that perseverance pays off!

And congrats Miss Daisy on the Chairman's! Your team is an wonderful role model!

And a huge thank you to my team for their effort the whole three days! You worked hard on the robot, on spirit, on scouting, and on SAFETY!!!! :D

The Philly Regional was amazing. From the Vets to the Rookies, everyone was just awesome. As you know, my team, 2668 North Montco Vortex did win the Rookie All-Star award and it felt great. We showed that rookies can be amazing. We had judges, ref's, and other teams routing for us all the way. We qualified for Atlanta, and now we need money to get there. All-in-all it was an awesome feeling to be there. The finals were absolutly outstanding. Congrats to Moe, Daisy, and Chuck on winning. And congrats to Daisy for the chairmans award. Hope to see you in atlanta.

We made sure to get a team picture with him on Saturday... we're still not sure if he liked the attention or if he thought we were insane.

This was my last year as a student on a team and Philadelphia was a great way to end those 8 years (FLL and FRC). Everyone had amazing energy. Our rookie year, team 467 came down to Philly, and all the coaches were wicked excited about coming back.

Congrats to everyone who competed, expecially Miss Daisy, Moe and Chuck 84, you guys were amazing.
Thanks to 1511 who cheered with us and was a huge help getting our team to cheer for something other than the ball randomizer.

He was really cool - fun to chat with waiting for our matches to start.

Yeah, I do have to say, that when scouting you shouldn't look at rank, you should look at the robot and how good it is. We were just unlucky and had 3 straight matches where out alliance partner and/or partners didn't work and also got matched up with the wrong teams. But hey, it happens, it's luck of the draw.

I honestly have to say that I do not know how or even why we got choosen. But, I do have the thank Miss Daisy and MOE for choosing us and allowing us to win back to back titles in Philly.

See you in Atlanta!
Psst, we quite possibly might have a couple upgrades up our sleeves.

We had long discussions about third partners. We felt we wanted a team that had the possibility to hurdle, but could also play awesome defense. We knew that Team 84 is a team you can work with and a team that will do exactly what they say they will do. We know you guys are tough, smart, team players.
I think that is all you can ask for in a partner. We were honored to be able to return the favor and pick you this year. Thanks for picking us in 2007!

Re: 2008 Philadelphia Regional!

Philly was once again a great regional! Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make the event special again this year.

Congrats to Chris and Joe Troy on the volunteer and Woodie Flowers awards. Very well deserved.

Special congratulations to Miss Daisy, Team 341, on their Chairman's Award win. You guys do it all. Keep it up and best of luck in Atlanta.

Congrats also to The Firebirds, Team 433, on their Engineering Inspiration win. You guys have worked hard for a long time. Way to go!

All of MOE 365 wants to thank Daisy (341) and Chuck (84) for a terrific alliance against some amazing competitors (102, 272, 834, 809, in addition to the alliances we faced in the QF and SF). Those finals were nailbiters!

I also want to say that we experienced a great FIRST moment this past weekend. Rookie team 2558 needed some significant assistance to get their bot on the playing field. Many teams, including mine, teamed up to provide resources during the whole competiiton to get 2558 running. One of the best moments of Philly for me this year was being in the stands the first time 2558 came onto the field (they had missed all of their practices and a few of their early qualification matches). Their first match out, they almost crossed a line. Just to see their bot moving and the students so excited to be operating it made me realize once again why we are all here - to inspire. Great job 2558! Use the network you made this weekend to establish a solid robotics team. We look forward to being your partner on the Philly playing field in 2009!

I grabbed a VHS copy of the FIRST video feed and will put some of the videos online when I get the chance.

Take care, everyone. For those heading to Atlanta, best of luck. Otherwise, see you in the off-season! (Duel on the Delaware, Ramp Riot, PARC)

Re: 2008 Philadelphia Regional!

Philly was truly trying for us. Whatever could break on the bot DID break on the bot. We got all electrical issues figured out from VCU only to have a pneumatics sensor go bad, an encoder wire go bad, and our "upgrade" for our fork lift fingers just simply not work well at all. It makes us wonder if we've stretched ourselves too far with what we're doing in our community and how many new things we've tried this year on the bot. Pneumatics, shifting transmissions, 3-stage elevator, removable electronics board, pre-designed battery mount, are all new to us and all have caused us big problems :(.

That said, we will still go headstrong into Atlanta. After a rest we'll rebound and are already planning how to spend our fix-it windows to resolve these issues. The thing that impressed me the most about Philly was the energy of the crowd and the proactive helpfulness of the other teams at the event. It was very encouraging.

A special thanks to MOE for their spare pneumatics switch as well as keying a sprocket for us, the staple gun, and alot of other "small" things that made a big difference. A special thanks to REX for lending us so many things on Thursday while we tried to organize our chaos without our leadership there to direct everything. And many, many thanks to the many people that made Philly run very smoothly. Finally, a thanks to the two final alliances for that spectacular performance in the 2nd finals match that ended up 114-116. Literally, the entire field was on fire with action for a full 2 minutes, from hurdling to defense to racing around. Simply put, it was incredible.

This is the absolute best part of FIRST, If I were to start a team, MOE, you would be one of the FIRST teams I'd model our team after. I hear so many wonderful things about your team and your website is so helpful, it's is basically a blueprint on how to get up and running.

Some teams may have different priorities, some teams feel if they don't win the regional, that the experience was a failure. I know it can be disappointing if your robot doesn't function well, but maybe the kids learn more about life lessons then they would would if thier robot's won everything and performed flawlessly for the weekend.

Thank you MOE for being a Leader in FIRST and in LIFE.

Congratulations to all of the teams on an amazing competition. A huge thank you to all of those, who work all year to make this such a great event.

I must say that it was one of the greatest, most rewarding, and most emotionally unusual experiences I have had in nine years of FIRST. I felt truly blessed and honored to work along side such a prestigious line-up of Judging staff.

Congratulations to Miss Daisy, MOE, and CHUCK for their Regional win! Best wishes to all of you at CE, and Best Wishes to Miss Daisy for CE Chairmans!!!

I've done some checking, and learned that Miss Daisy and Chuck are the only two teams to win successive Philly Regionals!!!

Thanks, Moe, for helping us do it.

Does anyone know of any two teams who have won consecutive regionals together?

103 and 25 have won the past three New Jersey regionals together.
1251 and 86 won the past two Florida regionals.
254 and 60 have won together multiple times in the past.
1114 and 2056 have won five tournaments together (2007 Waterloo, 2007 GTR, 2007 IRI, 2008 Waterloo, 2008 GTR).
And others.

I have to say one of my absolute favorite GP moments was when we had to go up against you guys, whom we had been cheering with all weekend, and we all started chanting things like "purple alliance" and "way to go teams" as opposed to red or blue or our team numbers. That to me was the epitome of GP & team friendship!! I think the funniest thing was when I first started hearing our teams chant purple alliance, I was confused... there were no purple robots on the field!! lol. Then I got it.. and realized we all got it... :D

Since I was shackled to the field, I was right in front of "The Purple Alliance" all through the event and all I can say is: All of You Rock! I think this year's Philly regional set a new standard for spirit, fun and graciously professional competition. Thanks for coming and I hope to see you again in Atlanta or next year.

Re: 2008 Philadelphia Regional!

I have to say that Philly greatly exceeded any of my expectations. Everyone there was so spirited and practically bleeding GP. A special thanks to 467 Duct Tape Bandits again for their ongoing friendship and spirit with our team. When I was down on the field as a driver during quarterfinals, half of the people in the stands on the opposite side from your team and ours were cheering for their alliance, and the other half were chanting "Random-izer" :D By far the most random and yet awesome display of energy. To our partners 316, 484, and then 1640, those were awesome matches. If only those ending ball placements in the first match had counted. (they never called it before that you couldn't be touching them, only not supporting them! oh well.) Special thanks to 484 who wanted the best for the alliance even if it meant stepping down. It's a shame you had those problems with your drive because you have an amazing robot!! Best of luck to you in the future, you guys were awesome to work with!! Thanks to 1640 for being ready and willing to fill in, that was a great win in match 2! Congratulations to 84, 365, and 341 on the win, that was an amazing final!!! Congrats on the Chairmans as well!! Being my FIRST year and second regional as a driver, if this gets any more exciting and fun than it was at Philly, I don't know how I can describe it!!! Overall, this was an amazing regional, even if it left me really sick and without a voice! :p

It's clearly stated in the manual:

Quote:

<G14>When the MATCH ends, each TRACKBALL that is at least partially supported by the OVERPASS and not in contact with any ROBOT of the same ALLIANCE will earn a 12-point bonus. If a TRACKBALL is in unrestrained motion (i.e. not in contact with another ROBOT) when the clock reaches zero, its contribution to the score will be based on when it comes to rest.

I had a moment like this at the Chesapeake Regional this year. Team 1894 basically had a kitbot chassis that didn't move. Over the course of three days, members from 341, 2234, and other teams got their robot working - and even added in functional pneumatics and hybrid mode! The first time their knockdown piston fired, hugs and high fives went all around.

Their robot didn't win, but that didn't phase them. One of their kids came up to me and told me how he was going to learn to program, learn pneumatics, learn about machining, and his robot was going to beat Daisy next year. :)

That moment made my heart rise up into my throat more than probably any other in FIRST. For experienced teams like John's and my own, we've held blue banners, trophies, and medals plenty of times.

If you asked me what awards or regionals we won in five years, I wouldn't be able to tell you. But it is moments like these that you will never, ever shake from your memory.

Ken here from the 304 RoboGriffins!
I want to congratulate everyone in the Philadelphia Regionals 2008! Amazing work, great alliances, and awkward moments tie up what made an amazing 3 days with all of the regional teams. Congratulations 341 on the Chairman's Award! If there is a team that can make the word "daisy" strike fear in a person's mind, it is you guys! Amazing job 365! Chuck 84 never failed to surprise me as well! Thanks for making it an amazing occasion! I hope to see all of you in the Philadelphia 2009 Regionals.

Much Appreciation,

Quick thanks to 365 for all of the accommodations this week, what a fun team to hang out with.

Mainly I'm posting hoping for a reply from 1511. Can one of you please tell me about how long it takes to get "I Believe that Robots ROCK" out of your head? Its been stuck there since the regional ended. Should I consult a doctor?

MWAH HA HA!!! (Evil laugh...) Never!

Between that and the resounding call "Rolling Thunder (clap clap clapclapclap)!" the sound of 1511 will be embedded forever! I got to spend a few hours with my brother after the regional and whenever the conversation would lag, he would chant "Rolling Thunder..." I'd almost admit that it was annoying, except that it was usually what I was hearing in my head too!

So, sorry, Barry, until you get back to Florida and get a dose of "Oink Oink Boom!" you are stuck with...

I would love to get together with both 816 & 1370 and head to Ramp Riot & get a rematch of our last matches with the teams we played if they go there as well.
I think we deserve a second shot at those matches.

Maybe it'll happen.
Maybe not.

Whatever the case, Thanks 816 for being a great alliance partner, and especially for the AMAZING removal of our alliances ball off the overpass on the OPPOSITE side of the field!!
I'm still amazed at that.

I'm now going to talk my head mentor into letting us go to RR this year. I loved working with you guys it seemed like we just an alliance of cool people. No one really was a jerk when we lost we all were just disappointed but, whatever. Lol I didn't think that removing balls for the opposite side of the field was too impressive but thanks. My mentor/coach yelled at us we we did it in one of the matches because we tore the tennis balls right off the top. Btw, anyone from 1370 or 237 is always welcome to stop by our pit in Atlanta just ask for Dustin, I'm always close, or just look for the dude in the orange and blue with the fro.

Anyway, 816 should have some more surprises in store for Atlanta, just keep an eye out.;)

There is always a spot at Ramp Riot for teams like yours.

We will deffinately be there. I tried to congratulate some of your members for the Chairmans win when leaving on Saturday but they all seemed to excited and some looked to be crying. But you guys deserve it. See you guys in Atlanta. Thank you for some great semifinal matches. If any of you want to hang out in Atlanta just look for me or Dustin(thefro).

There has been some discussion of Ramp Riot in this thread and we just set our date as 11/8/08
Ramp Riot 2008 will be on November 8th this year. Have your mentors register online at www.team341.com We usually sell out by August.

You may also want to check out the Tigertrons event PARC on May 10th. This is a great competition as well.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but the topic came up. I will post a seperate thread about Ramp Riot, soon.

Good luck to everyone in Atlanta and the 2008 offseason!

Big thanks to Moe and Daisy for picking us. That was an amazing run through the finals. I think my heart was stoping in minutes of time waiting for scores. A shout out to teams 103, 272, and 809/834. Your alliance was a sight to behold. I also want to bring up our sister team 284 on winning Creativity on Friday. Its amazing what those folks came up with, oozing with simplicity, and on an extremely tight budget to boot. Sadly looks like *I* won't being to Championships this year, can't afford the time or money or lack of support at work. You know though I'll be there in spirit over the web. Good Luck Chuck and to all the teams!

I have to add that the student alumni who was one of the FOUNDERs of that cheer for us took a BUS all the way from NYC, and walked 27 BLOCKS to our hotel at 9pm at night in Philly to come help us lead that cheer :) So Im glad to hear it was worth it!!! hehe!

For those who are wondering what all the noise is about, and those who wan to re-live it, TBA has some video of the finals up now. Too bad the audio doesn't come anywhere near the reality of the sound in the Drexel field house.

Sorry Rich, I can't hear you. My ears are still ringing. Something about a RAN-DOM-I-ZER, too.

Looks like TBA beat me to it. I just put up all 3 finals matches, cut from the official feed, up on Google Video (they were processing almost all day:rolleyes: ) Those embedded Google videos can be found on our this page. The audio is delayed ~5 sec (something that happened during Google's encoding). I cut the semis 2 (against 237 816 & 1370) and quarters 3 (against 357 1727 & 709) matches as well and will upload them as well. I will work on getting these all up on TBA.

What are you guys talking about? That crowd was silent...you could hear a pin drop right before the last score was announced.
