I agree, bring it up to the FLRPC.

Those bleachers don't get as close to the field as the portable bleachers though. I also like walking behind there.

That would be a great idea, we should make more room. Dean did tell us to fill the place =P.

From what I remember from the post FLR meeting no one is allowed to talk to this guy. Not even from the planning committee and for some reason he insists on the portable bleachers.
With 40 teams and a push to get the public in there there is going to be no room at all in there at all. I hope people in FIRST read this take time to take that into consideration before there are big problems the second week. And punishing the teams and saying "well you guys need to figure it out and make room" is not the answer neither. It's not the teams job to go out of their way to make room for the public. That's the planning committee's job. There's a big huge space not being used for anything but a place for kids to go off and toss footballs around and play hackysack.FIRST needs to help the committee make the best possible event there is and let them talk with this guy so they can let him know what they need so they can give everyone the best possible event there is to best sell FIRST to the Rochester community.Nothing kills the momentum of selling a program than having a completely miserable experience attending the event no matter if it's free or not.

Re: 2008 Finger Lakes Regional

Ed,
I brought this issue up a couple of years ago & it comes from higher than the planning committee. I suggested rotating the field & using both sides as ends & ditching the bleachers but I was told that would give is less space. (granted it would give us fewer "good" seats) I also asked about opening up the other pull out seats & the problem then is that the seats are too far away from the field. Maybe we just need to get bigger bleachers, or re-construct the field house for our needs.

I like that last suggestion. I don't think RIT will like it much though.

They keep the doors locked. And you don't want to be standing around outdoors for long periods of time this time of year around here. Just ask the Bouchers.:D

They built the Field house for activities such as FIRST...though having robots play hockey in Ritter Arena would be sweet.

I meant more like a arena like the Tsongas or Garden where they disassemble the hockey rink or basketball court when not in use.

I suppose I never really noticed the seating issue too much, being on drive team, but now that I reach back in that vast expanse I call a memory, It was really crowded and poorly set up. What if they scrapped the portable bleachers and set up the field with the long dimension next to the 107, 108, 109, 110 and 111 bleachers (refer to this, to avoid being completely lost http://www.rit.edu/~field/specialEvents_seating.php3) and Then set up the big screen opposite from them. That way, it may be a little further from the pits but then people get good seats. at the very least you could justify the field to one corner. That way, house seats would be on 2 sides. I don't know, something.

But that requires logic and clear thinking. Don't we require a process to do that?

But if those seats were pulled out, 191 would have no place to put their gigantic banner.

Anyways, I don't really see what the issue is. Last year there were tons of empty seats (especially over in the "quiet area" by the concessions). Even in the good seating areas there was lots of room. Maybe we can start seriously worrying about this once FLR is as big as VCU or Chesapeake. Until then, lets enjoy the regional, letting X Cats and GRR take all the best seats as usual (since they're the loudest), while the rest of us settle for the slightly less good seats.

Dont feel bad if they do. I'm my team's Welder and our herder mech. keeps getting cracks around the welds from the force of the arm smacking the ball. So one might break off during FLR, but we have like 5 spares.

My TIG welds are no push overs i took a Welding class last year for 2 hours a day all year during school. But the metal around the weld gets heat treated after a weld is made. This makes the metal weaker. That is why i hate welding thin metal, steel or Alum.

I'm probably going to have to miss pratice matches and may not get there till late friday or something.

I'm having touble picking if I want to cheer with my old HS team 174 or the team I mentor 1930.

Anyone learning the moves to the Soulja Boy dance in case that is in the Dance mix with Cha Cha Slide and Cotten Eye Joe?

Then you can root for 1405! Or go to the concessions stand.

But seriously, I would go with 1930. That's where you are now, plus they don't get nearly as much crowd support as the Arctic Warriors anyways (if my memory serves me).

Hello all, need some info, Teams 65, 67 and 68 are trying to drive thru Canada with all of our robot stuff. US and Canada customs still have not given us any answers about forms or processes to pass thru Canada to get to FLR. It will save us about 2.5 hrs of drive time if we can pass thru. Has anyone done this in the past? We know about the forms and processes to attend an event like waterloo. We want to just pass thru.

I'll do some checking for you at work since our engineers seem to make frequent trips through and always have an assortment of gear in their vehicles.

Meanwhile...You say it is a 2.5 hour savings. Is that including the wait times getting through customs? A two hour delay on either end may make going around the bottom a very pleasant experience.

Team 1503 may be the best source to ask since they have to deal with crossing the border so often.
Of course with the new changes no one may be able to tell what will happen.

In all the years I've been travelling to competitions in the States with 296 and then 1503, we've never once been stopped on account of tools and equipment carried across the border, in either direction. On 296 we never prepared any paperwork; on 1503 last year we had an itemized list of the contents of the cargo van (listing items and country of origin) as well as an export control form for each way, but were never asked to show anything to anyone.

I don't think the rules would be any different for just passing through. Someone at GM might know more; I imagine it would be common to go through Canada when visiting the Tonawanda plant, for example.

Tristan Lall 25-02-2008 18:36

Re: 2008 Finger Lakes Regional

Technically, if a company needs its employees to pass through Canada with some equipment, it's supposed to possess a temporary importation bond. That's a lot of paperwork and a long wait at both borders. (I've done this with the University, and a bunch of equipment; it's no fun.)

On the other hand, you can make the trip as a normal traveller; it's legal, but they can still search you, and compel you to pay duties. Odds are, you'll be fine, but you could be directed to wait for an agent to search through everything, negating the time savings. Assuming you've only got conventional tools, and nothing in saleable condition, you probably want to do this.

Team 2228 has a project to make trading cards of all the FLR teams. They passed out a flier at the Rochester Rally on Feb 18. Here is the link to the download page on their website where you can find the details. I have no idea how many teams are doing this, but it does sound like a good momento of the event. http://hflrobotics.com/downloads/FIRSTTradingCard.pdf

Some of those questions, actually, most of them are all opinionated and will not be known until the end of the season. Almost no teams have competed in a full match and can tell what their % is. Id rather have them be a picture and just a summary of the team. :). Plus if they did all FIRST teams it would be 1500 different cards to collect. Its a trading card game nightmare!

I think CougarTech will be thrilled if they get just photos and summaries from each team! It doesn't look like there is a lot of space for all of the information they requested, so I'm sure what ever you give will be fine!

And to switch topics!!!
Huskie Brigade is coming to FLR!?! Between you and us (1511) Camo will be everywhere! And our camos look so good together! :)

Maybe so their robot will blend in and slip by everyone's defenses as it zips around the track?!

But as far as camo goes - red camo does not easily blend in! Unless it is autumn in a stand of sugar maple trees. And since the last time I looked out, there were piles of lovely white snow on the ground, so I know it isn't fall in Rochester!

It's Finger Lakes Week.
So it's time to ask : who's up for laser tag on Thursday after the pactice matches.I know the usual suspects Alex, Liz and Dan are shoo ins but anyone else want to go?

Re: 2008 Finger Lakes Regional

well Ed, I am getting out of class at 3, should be leaving buffalo by 3:30, and knowing the way my uncle drives, I should be to Lima by 4:45 and into RIT by 5:15... so I think you can count me in for a game or two...

Can't wait to see how FLR stacks up to week one competition, and racks up to the rest of the week two regionals.

I should be on field reset Friday and Saturday so feel free to say "hey"

Are you up to being beaten by an old man?

Jay Trzaskos 03-03-2008 00:01

Re: 2008 Finger Lakes Regional

that's highly improbable steve, seeing as ED and I cleaned house last time we were on teh same team, so teh real question is whether or not your ready to get the dye basted out of your hair by us youngins? :p

Cause you keep changing the day once I arrive. It might take you, Jay and the rest of the inept Rochester area will be needed to bring me down. Bring it on with as many as you can find.

Jay, I might be old but with age comes wisdom. Bring all of your friends and combined you might have the wisdom of a Nat. Talk is cheap so bring cash.

 :D :P :p :yikes:

It's getting a little rough on the board...

Is it even safe to ask for the address where everything will be going down? Since I am not going to be wiped out from driving overnight and queuing all day, I'll probably make it this year.

Oh, it's Thursday for sure.
I'll even give you a ride there so I can make sure you can make it.
I wouldn't want you to miss your execution.

I like to think of it this way Steve, all these younger robots we are seeing keep getting faster and faster, unlike the older... slower ones from years past.

By the way, how much does your head glow under a black light?

Just remember the story of the Tortoise and the Hare. I am sure that you can read, can't you? the link is : http://childhoodreading.com/Arthur_R..._the_Hare.html

Once upon a time there was a hare who, boasting how he could run faster than anyone else, was forever teasing tortoise for its slowness. Then one day,............

You will need the glowing hair so that you can find me. You will be down when you do but at least you will know who got you.

Welcoming all 40+ teams attending this year's 4th annual Finger Lakes Regional in the Gordon Field House on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

For those living in the area, but can't attend, the two-day event will be simulcast on Time-Warner Ch. 4.

We'll also be posting photos and possibly video clips after the event to our web site at www.firstrochester.org.

Have fun, travel safely, act graciously professional!

I'd like to just note that Alex is saying "bring it on gentlemen" because he knows I am going to beat him...again... and then can bring up that technicality.

Thanks DarkFlame145! Looks like we'll be able to get through Pennsylvania before hitting the ice/snow.
Now about this laser tag....time, place, cost?
I haven't heard anything back about the team trading cards...did all the FLR teams participate?
