2008 Wisconsin Regional

March 13-15th, 2008
US Cellular Arena - Milwaukee, WI
54 Team Capacity

There is currently 23 teams signed up for the regional with 31 spots still open. The list so far looks similar to who attended last year. Are any teams looking at Wisconsin as their second regional?

166 is working on registering for the Wisconsin regional!

The team was excited about the team social, so that played a big factor in voting to go.

Wisconsin is high our list. Looks like a very good field, and our team has never been there before. I expect 931 will make a decision soon.

I dont know if we will go (yet). I think we will if we get the NASA grant. Is there a registration deadline for the WI regional? i know it will fill up pretty fast but is there an official deadline?

thanks, vivek

AndyB 25-10-2007 18:58

Re: 2008 Wisconsin Regional

Technically the deadline is December 3rd, but the regional will fill up before that.

vivek16 25-10-2007 19:04

Re: 2008 Wisconsin Regional

hmm... isnt that also when they will anounce who recieved the nasa grant? that might be problematic...

sigh..., vivek

AndyB 25-10-2007 19:36

Re: 2008 Wisconsin Regional

NASA grants are announced "No later than November 19th". I believe you can still get registered as a pending team. Though I don't really know the difference in not being registered and being a pending team.

Re: 2008 Wisconsin Regional

Thank you Andy.

I will take that up with our administration...
that clears things up.

thanks, vivek

Discovery World is an awesome venue - you will not be disappointed if you make the trip to Milwaukee!

Oh..and I hear that silly little robot competition is pretty neat too! :]

Wisconsin Regional teams still looking to make accommodations in Milwaukee:

The Regional Planning Committee has just struck a deal with a hotel right across the street from the US Cellular arena. It is a pretty decent deal at a great hotel.

Early next week we will have an 800 number and website for reservations with details emailed to teams but I wanted to get this out there in case people were still looking.

Cheers.

The Wisconsin Regional will be at full capacity this year, at 63 or 64 teams, making it the largest regional in the US behind the Connecticut Regional.

Should be another rocking time at the Arena, as well as at the brand new social site, Discovery World on Lake Michigan.

Also FYI to teams:

Hyatt Hotel Contract
Monday, December 10, 2007
The FIRST Wisconsin Regional has contracted with the Hyatt Hotel & Resort - Milwaukee. Teams can reserve rooms for $99 per night. More information can be found on the lodging page or by vising the Hyatt website.

This will also be going out in an e-mail to Team Contacts shortly.

Re: 2008 Wisconsin Regional

This e-mail went out to all team main contacts, but posting it here doesn't hurt anyone. Only applies to teams attending the WI Regional.

Thanks!

Greetings Wisconsin Regional Teams!

The Wisconsin Regional Planning Committee hopes that all FRC teams are enjoying a great start to 2008 and having great success during the always frantic build season.

We have some important items for your team’s main contact to take care of to help us ensure that we provide you the greatest FRC Regional experience that we can.

#1 – We are still looking for volunteers for the event, especially in the areas of robot inspection and crowd control. If you have experienced team members, parents, or mentors that could volunteer for the event and help us out, please have them register in FIRST’s Volunteer System (VIMS) as soon as possible. Information on registering can be found here: http://www.usfirst.org/involved/volu...lt.aspx?id=176

#2 – As in previous years, we will again be hosting many area VIPs at the event to either introduce them to or get them re-acquainted with FIRST and how they can be of assistance to us. We need 2 student volunteers per team to act as VIP Tour guides on Friday of the event from approximately 10a-12p. These students will be charged with taking VIPs around the event and talking to them about FIRST, how it works and what it means to them. Please send the names of the students that will act as VIP tour guides ASAP to ricky.quinones@gmail.com There will be a brief walkthrough with these students Thursday morning at the event.

#3 – We are very excited to announce that the Wisconsin Regional will once again host an exciting team social, this year at Milwaukee’s Discovery World (http://www.discoveryworld.org/). In order for this event to run smoothly and successfully, we need an accurate count of how many people from your team will be attending the team social, which is free to all teams (students and mentors ONLY). It is truly important that we get an accurate count to ensure enough food for 63 teams and to allow us to schedule dinner shifts appropriately. Please email the number of students and mentors that will be attending to info@wisconsinregional.com by 2/29/08.
Seating for dinnershifts at Discovery World will be assigned as responses come in.

The Wisconsin Regional Planning Committee appreciates your help with these items and is looking forward to seeing you in March!

Team 1732 will be there as well. This regional is going to be great! Hope to see everyone else there! Hope we don't get stuck in the basement next to the arena again though. I guess they need the room for the additional teams. See you all at the regional!

Team 2194 Fondy Fire Robotics will definitly be there! (along as Minnesota Regional) It's going to be incredible with 64 teams!

Yes there will be teams in the outside pits again. This year there will be more space and we are tryimg to make sure that there will be two teams of inspectors, one for each side. The layout of the arena has changed slightly so that should help as well. Either way its going to be a great regional see you guys in March.

Do it if at all humanly possible. It is the only reason I am on the team this year, (as well as the FUN I have building the website... ) ... I went last year as my school's mascot, REALLY enjoyed it. Joined the team. Lost anything I may have had in the past relating to a free evening. Gained a HUGE respect and admiration for the team members who showed up, and lost some for those who bailed frequently. All in all, came out ahead.

Team 2437 from Hawaii going to Milwaukee!

We are glad to have you!

You just might want to not look at the weather forecast ;)

Right now in Milwaukee it is -4 degrees with a wind chill of -23, but no worries, by March it should be at least above zero!

Feel free to email me or let us know if you need assistance with anything coming to or in Milwaukee!!

Heh well that's definitely an interesting choice in a regional but welcome! I've always wanted to go to Hawaii to see what a nice tropical climate is like, maybe you guys want to see what a cold snowy area is like?!?! :). If you take me back with you I will be more than grateful!

Good luck and welcome to the area.

Yeah, our district (Kenosha Unified) was the only one in the southeast corner of Wisconsin that stayed open that day. Nice job Superintendent! :yikes:

YEEEEEEEEAAAAA! Wisconsin represent WOOH WOOHH WOOHHH

2077 and our newly formed all girls team 1988 will be there to take some sort of title (I'm quite hopeful/optimistic that we will have the pleasure of scrambling to get enough money together to go to Atlanta this year)

if your wondering who we are... think most obnoxiously loud rookie team last year that was scrambling to make weight and finish our robot in the pits last year (More hated us for getting dangerously close to their sweet touch screen pit thingy)

Re: 2008 Wisconsin Regional

This email is going out to all team contacts shortly, it doesn't hurt to have it up here as well for people to see.

Greetings Teams!

The Wisconsin Regional is fast approaching and the Regional Planning Committee looks forward to welcoming you to Milwaukee!

In this email you will find some important and helpful information about the US Cellular Arena and the event itself.

If you have any questions before coming to Milwaukee, feel free to email Ricky Quinones (ricky.quinones AT gmail.com) or Kevin Kolodziej (kevin.kolodziej AT gmail.com)

The first three items are action items that we need responses back from teams on:

1) VIP Guides: If you have not submitted one or two names of a student(s) that would be able to assist as VIP Tour Guides on Friday of the event from 10a-12p, we also need a fewer number of students to give tours for VIPs after lunch on Friday, from approx. 1-2p. If you have team members that can assist at either of these times please email their names and indicate their availability ASAP to ricky.quinones AT gmail.com These students are needed to show our VIPs around and show then what FIRST is all about, there will be a brief walkthrough with them on Thursday morning at the event as well to explain their role.

2) Team Social: If your team has not reserved spots at the Team Social and is planning on attending, please email a firm number of students and mentors that will be coming to info AT wisconsinregional.org by February 29th. We need a firm number to make accurate dinner counts and teams that do not respond by 2/29 will not be able to dine at the social. A detailed information sheet on the social will be provided in your team registration packet when you register Thursday morning at Pit Administration.

3) Call for Volunteers – If your team has extra parents, mentors or students that are interested in volunteering at the event please have them sign up ASAP in the FIRST Volunteer Information and Matching System at https://my.usfirst.org/vims and they will be contacted by our Volunteer Coordinator.

The rest of this email is general reminders and hints that we think will help teams out in preparing for the event:

1) Unloading Procedures: Please take note of the FIRST rules regarding early unloading and uncrating on Thursday morning at the event at 7:45 A.M.: For teams’ convenience and to help ensure safety in the Pit, three (3) persons from each team will be allowed to uncrate early. At least one of the three must be an adult of post high school status . If any of the three-team members leave the Pit area during that time, he/she will not be readmitted until general Pit opening. Teams cannot work on the robot or set up the team’s station during that time. Teams that do not have a post high school mentor with them will not be allowed into the arena until general pit opening at 8:30 A.M. Use the main entrance on Kilbourn Avenue. These doors will not open until 7:45 A.M. for early uncrating, so please plan accordingly.

2) Parking: The Arena operates a surface lot directly across from the main entrance of the facility; rates are approx. $10 per day. Check out www.parkmilwaukee.com for more information on other lots around the US Cellular Arena. For teams arriving on buses and staying with the Hyatt for the event, please notify them that you are using a bus and they will assist you with free bus parking.

3) General Reminders:
a. If the Wisconsin Regional is your first event this season, please do not forget your team’s consent and release forms and team roster, found here: www.usfirst.org/community/frc/content.aspx?id=8128
Teams cannot register without a completed Consent/Release form for each team member and mentor attending the event(s) and a completed Team Roster. This includes adults traveling with the team. The forms for persons under 18 years of age must also have a parent or legal guardian’s name and signature.

b. Outside food is not allowed on US Cellular Arena property, this includes in the arena and in the parking lot across from the arena. This is detailed in the contract between FIRST and the Arena and will be enforced. A list of local dining establishments is on the regional website, http://www.wisconsinregional.org/dining.htm and a map of these places will be provided in your registration packet.

c. Saving seats is not allowed in the arena. Handicapped seating will be available; please find a volunteer to assist you if this is necessary for someone on your team.

d. There will be a small scale Overdrive field available for teams to use FTC, VEX or other small system robots on if so desired. This field will be next to Scholarship Row and give the general public a chance to see the other programs and impacts of FIRST. This field will use tennis balls as trackballs, the top of the overpass is 10" high, and the bottom clearance of the overpass is 8" high. An FTC game field may also be present.

e. The Regional Planning Committee is planning on webcasting the event, check out www.wisconsinregional.org closer to the dates for details on how and where to watch it.

Thank you for attending to these items for us, it helps us our tremendously in making the regional a great experience for everyone.

Once again, do not hesitate to contact us if you need anything prior to coming or in Milwaukee.

See you soon!

Because there are no touchdowns there!

We actually have a quarterback that can play. The only thing I will admit is that Devin Hester is better than the packers returner.

And also, ... :D

Ok, i'll admit that I think Brett Favre is a cool guy, but seriously, whats up with his last name?

And don't be hatin' on Rex. He's got a great arm and he's..... I'm sorry, i cant even make anything up. Even Bears fans hate him:mad: ... *huddles up in fetal position and mutters to self*

Actually, I'm from Wisconsin, and I'll take Cledus the Slackjawed Yockle (Tarvaris Jackson) over Brent Favor anyday.

I wander into this thread and what do I see, someone across the border that bleeds purple and gold?

I'm contemplating making the 5-6 hour drive from the Twin Cities after my last class on Friday so I can go see that crazy Winnovation bot in person.

I'd also get to do a little advance scouting on a few of the teams that will be coming to MN tow weeks later.

Am I the only cheesehead who can't believe that tailgating isn't allowed at the WISCONSIN (Land of brats, cheese curds and the frozen tundra of Lambeau) Regional?! I can guarantee you that if Green Bay hosted the event, it would be brats and cheese for EVERYONE!! :)

See you in a couple weeks!

Sean

Believe me, we (the RPC) tried to work something out. But we have little say in the contracts between the venues and FIRST.

Sorry! I love tailgating as much as the other guy, I bled green and gold.

Wow, no tailgating...I was actually looking forward to that this season...Since last year we tailgated at Wisconsin Regional, National Competition, and IRI...It just seems weird that Wisconsin is the only one limiting it (Destroying it). Hopefully Minnesota Regional will allow it... :)

It is only not allowed in the lot owned by the Wisconsin Center District, if you can find another lot to do it in, go for it.

We are in no way destroying tailgating, just enforcing the rules that we have to.

Not a whole lot of spots around Williams Arena.......the two lots that are around are owned by the University probably won't allow tailgating, but I'm not positive

Yeah, our district (Kenosha Unified) was the only one in the southeast corner of Wisconsin that stayed open that day. Nice job Superintendent! :yikes:

PS: PLEASE bring Macadamia Nut chocolate. PLEEEEEAAASE. I love that stuff. :p

Kind of... Thomas More is the school we began from, and the school that we are officially associated with, however they have let it be a community team, so we have around 7 schools total. I dont go to TM, I go to Oak Creek, as do many of our teammates. We are working to have OC start our own club. We competed in the Milwaukee Vex league. There is not a big teacher support at OC. We have 1 mentor who is working to get it started. Our principal is also very pro-robotics. He has been my principal since 6th grade, so Me and one of my friends have been talking to him about it since then. Outside that, I dont think many teachers know we exist. If they do, they have absolutely no idea what we do. We also dont work in Thomas More. We work at American Acryllics.

Just got home from the St. Louis regionals, what a blast. We did fantastic this year. lost by a close margin in both of the semi final matches to the eventual winners 148, 217, 830 (great teams). What a fantastic regional! a few minor tweaks, and we look forward to seeing all the great teams here at the Wisconsin regional!

Is anyone else staying at the Hyatt across the street from the competition site? Team 1652 is dropping off our higher-ups (and me, for some ODD reason... ) on Wednesday night (the 13th, I believe), the day before the Tech Day. If anyone is staying there, and can afford to bring an Xbox 360... that'd be great, thanks. I'll bring controllers.

Just so you all know, I'm really excited about this year's competition, our robot, and how much my hard work (no, really!) is going to pay off this year. Go Wisconsin!

Just a side note: About Favre's name, it wasn't our fault. He's actually a boy of the south, Mississippi if I remember correctly. You guys have the Internet, go Google it.

I will be recording all of the matches and awards for (eventual) upload to SOAP/TBA. I'm hoping to get that taken care of fairly quickly so that teams can benefit from it for scouting, but we'll have to see what the real world says about that...

Hi All!

Team 754 will be there for sure! Can't Wait!!! But.. Our mentors did not sign us up for the dinner at the team social, there was a communication issue... Any teams have ANY extra tickets they can spare??

I wish you the best in finding extra wristbands from other teams, but if you are unable to, you are still welcome to attend the social and see all that Discovery World has to offer and mingle with the teams - you will just have to find food on your own prior to or after the social event.

Last year there was a practice field present. I would assume that there will be again this year. It probably won't be a full sized field.

Ricky, can you confirm this?

I am 90% sure there will be carpet and 1/2 an overpass. No guarantees on walls or a lane divider.

It will be available tomorrow as soon as the first match is played and scored, the uploads in the scoring system don't start until that.

The link will be:

Video was okay (looked the same as AZ did on Ustream last week). Audio was not so good, it was very garbled.

ALIBI 13-03-2008 22:06

Re: 2008 Wisconsin Regional

The video was fine and will only get better when they use multiple cameras. The audio was weird. I really can not put it into words. It seemed like something was not connected right. When it was quiet, it was OK, but when it started to get louder, which was most of the time, it broke up and was difficult to listen to. It became distorted, I can duplicate a similar affect by turning my computors audio processor all the wayup and then use the volume control on the speakers to turn down the volume.

Thank you for putting the WebCast Together!

A typical practice day. A lot of finishing work and tuning being done on robots (ours included).

Between driving and fixing the robot, I haven't been able to watch many matches. What are everyone's thoughts on the field?
