Tragic loss of a team member

John Lafata, a dedicated and talented Team RUSH (frc27) student passed away over the weekend due to complications from pneumonia. John couldn't be revived after collapsing suddenly. John was in 11th grade at Clarkston High School. He was 16 years old.

John was a pit crew member and the lead student designer of our chassis sub-group. John was bright and eager to help, and devoted countless late nights last year to get our bot up and running. His natural mechanical ability was astonishing.

John was also one of the kindest students I've ever had the pleasure of mentoring. If you came into our pits last season you undoubtedly interacted with him. He jumped at the chance to explain his work and the work of his fellow teammates! His energy and excitement for engineering and FIRST was incredible. His leadership and intensity will be greatly missed.

If you would like to help support the family, donations can be made to one of two funds. The Lafata Education Fund will help support the educational needs of John's younger brother and sister. The Lafata Family Fund is for general donations. John's funeral arrangements and information for donations are listed below. Thank you all for your support. Please keep John and his family in your prayers.

Checks can be made out to the above mentioned accounts at either branch.

It is tragic when someone dies. Even more so when that person is so young. My prayers go out to the family and friends at this deeply sad time.

No words are adequate to fully express Team 236's condolences on John's passing. Let his life, although too short, serve as an inspiration to others.

From the table in the corner, they could see a world reborn.
And they rose with voices ringing, and I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung became their last Communion!

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me, that I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken…there's a pain goes on and on.
Phantom faces at the window, phantom shadows on the floor!
Empty chairs at empty tables, where my friends will meet no more.
Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me what your sacrifice was for!
Empty chairs at empty tables, where my friends will sing no more...

In bridges he burned, or the way that she died?
It's time now to sing out though the story never ends
Let's celebrate, remember a year in the life of friends
Remember the love, Remember the love,
Remember the love, Measure in love
...
In diapers, report cards, in spoke wheels, in speeding tickets
In contracts, dollars, in funerals, in births
In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you figure a last year on earth?
Figure in love, figure in love
Figure in love, measure in love
Seasons of love, seasons of love...

From me...

Why must the young be cut down so unjustly?
Why fate must, cruelly, be so?
He could have changed world history-
But now we'll never know.

The epitaphs, the speeches
never are able to show
what we really need to tell them
when Death beckons and we go.

Hells, we tempt the gods of Risk and Chance
just walking out our doors!
What can we do, in the scheme of things
to alter our life's course?

The world cannot hope to heal
the wounds of friends of our dead ones,
but I still pray, at Judgement come,
again we see our daughters and sons.

And on behalf of my former team, TEMPEST 240 Robotics, may you stay strong in the weeks to come.
