Re: Buying a new laptop

Before you go to Support, try to find out if your touchpad driver has software/controls. E.G., I've got a Synaptics touchpad which included software to add extra features and options. One of the options gives me the ability to let it keep scrolling all the way if I slide my finger a certain way. I leave it on, but maybe your's have something similar. Also, since you just recieved it, try to check for available updates from Windows Update and the manufacturer's site. Might help.

For example if I run my finger along the scroll part of the pad and lift it off then it scrolls pretty much as far as possible and there is no way to stop it. I already went into the driver settings and set it to only 1 line per wheel notch but there seems to be no difference.

That's a feature purposely built into many touchpads nowadays. When you use the side of the touchpad to scroll, if you pick up your finger while still scrolling it interprets that as if you want to keep going. (If you've ever used/owned an iPhone/iPod Touch, they have this same feature for scrolling, although their's is [IMHO] better implemented since it slows down and stops instead of going forever, like the touchpad on my Dell laptop does.)

To avoid this on a laptop touchpad, just stop moving your finger along the touchpad while scrolling before lifting it up. (Or just use a portable USB/wireless mouse. ;))

Adjusting the number of lines only affects the physical scroll-wheels in mice.

I fixed the problem by installing a different driver. I called and they said when I reinstalled vista that I installed the wrong driver.

Re: Adjusting the number of lines. It adjusts it for the the touch pad as well.
