So who's going to submit a safety animation?

We're going to try, even though our two most experienced animators graduated :(

Yes, the deadline is ridiculously tight (Dec. 3), but if we keep it simple we might make it.

Here is the Safety Animation announcement from FIRST: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=59148

I think we are going to try as a way to start animation training.

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

During this time of year last year, we were very low on animators, all of our veteran animators had either graduated or had not yet returned for the season. I approached a new member and asked him and he said he would try. He had to teach himself and spent a great deal of time making not one but two animations for us to choose from. He also spent a lot of time tweaking and finished the final animation just after deadline for submission.

I am *encouraging* some of our team members to think about this. We are in our final week of preparation before Capitol BEST and the focus is on that right now but maybe we'll see.

Even though we missed submitting our entry last year, the student had a wonderful time creating the animations and enjoyed the process - and - he gained valuable experience in a new area. I would encourage every team to submit. :) Animators rock!

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

We are going to try to this year, as we have one returning animator and a couple new ones that want to try. The only problem is our computers and laptops are locked away in a school bathroom :ahh: , seeing as we are changing shop locations. :)

Hopefully we will be able to dig them out next week to get it started.

We've got several problems of our own, but team 2090 will submit someting, even if it's total garbage.

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

lol! Believe me, it can't be worse than the crap I'll muster up. We might have some new students coming in that may know about it.

oh man, that is pretty rough, I don't think I can help but if you need anything... actually most of our problems are resolved for this year, but we wont have any computers to use next year, that'll be intresting.

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

We thought about doing it. Our team has never submitted a safety animation before. We had a subteam get together to do it, but they read the guidelines and decided that they could use their effort to do other things and get more out of it. We're going for several other awards, and before January we aim to build a new cart, some new transmissions, publish a children's book, and do some demonstrations in the community... so we're pretty tight on time.

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

our team is not looking too hot right now. I could do all of the safety animation but that would be entirely unethical. Our problem is that our animation team consists of 3 people from last year (and this is their second year) and 8 freshmen who are just about the squirreliest kids you could ever find. I would tell them to run around the building a couple of times to get rid of all that energy, but half of them are cross country runners. That doesn't phase them one bit.

I also think a major part of the problem is that we are only meeting once a week. Things will really pick up when the actual season comes around and we are meeting everyday.

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

sigh, this is not looking good for team 2090, I think I'm the only one capable of working at home, and I'm sure buddy will atest to how inexperienced I am. Not ot mention how little gets done at our shourt meetings... we are in some serious trouble, especially considering that we need to mail it on december 1st because we are in hawaii and it takes forever for things to get to the mainland, even express.
But I have a quesiton and I know it's off topic, one of my team unistalled 3DS MAX and tried to reinstall it but it insists the license expired... additionally have they opened up the new licenses? cause we are borrowing computers again, and these only have the 30 day trial... this is bad...

Alright, a diffrent member of my team has a computer that runs vista. I figured that disabling the display composition, running it in compatablity for XP, and runing it as an admin would do the trick but it's still no good, I looked it up online and with no better success, I got the same advice. Any suggestions on how to get it to run? It opens to the welcome screen but freezes before it can display anything.

I have windows vista Ultimate on my computer and 3ds max 8 runs fine. It actually runs better than it did on windows XP. I have not installed 3ds max 9 on my computer so i don't know if it will run. I'm reluctant to install 3ds max 9 because if i use my 3ds max 8 files and import them into 9 it completely screws up my models. There is no way around it, if tried so many things, but for some reason it is only my copy of 3ds max 8 that has this bug in it.

Autodesk released a patch to address the Vista bugs a while ago. If you Google "autodesk 3ds max 9 vista service pack", it is the first option that pops up. Hope that helps.

The deadline for the safety animations was just recently extended to December 10, 2007.

More information can be found in this thread - http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=59759 :)

Geekzilla201 28-11-2007 21:16

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

Yay for deadline extensions! I suppose its time I make my first post somewhere on this vast information exchange. Out team (1643) had two animators, both rather inexperianced, but we are happy with our result. This is the first time either of us (Him and I) actually completed something to submit.

Testament-Doom 29-11-2007 14:39

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

Well.. thank god for the deadline extension, our team wouldn't have made it in time to finish the safety animation. Speaking of animations, it's been such a long time since we did submit.. anything. Meh, but our safety animation is really something! I can't wait to see what other teams have to submit. The characters in our animation are soooooo cute!

On a side note: BuddyB's model gave me the finger. D:

This is the first year our team is entering the safety animation contest, and I have some questions. What is the format that the animation should be in on the dvd? Do we just put the file on a dvd or does it have to play automatically like the movies you get from Block Buster?

Geekzilla201 29-11-2007 16:43

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

I burned it as a true movie DVD. I figure they will be able to play it one way or another.

This will be the first-ever animation submission by Team 980. Two new students just started working on it. They attended the animation sessions of the SCRRF workshops held at CSUN earlier in November and the Autodesk 3ds Max software was just downloaded last night. I think they'll do a great job and I'm excited to see what they produce.

Well kind of late to start now wouldn't you think? We have been working on this animation for the whole time and are not even done yet. Tonight we showed our first preliminary rendering to the team without voices. We recorded voices tonight as well. But I think this is the best product our team has ever produced animation wise. Well good luck to all of you.

Whoa! slow down partner. Standard broadcasting definition is 740X480 NTSC thats what a standard Tv plays. I would render it out in that size. I personally like the quicktime animation compressor. It does a darn good job at keeping the quality of the animation.

You can't lose if you submit an animation. Even if you don't win an award, your team wins by just doing it.

You must be more aware of your what you post on chiefdelphi. You are not representing yourself but also your team. So next time be more aware of what you're portraying you and your team to be.

Ok if you insist.

Don't go there girlfriend!

He's not in the safety animation but he will be in the AVA entry. I still have to finish rigging his hair and get his mouth ready for lip animation, which is gonna take a huge amount of time. Then its off to character animation! Which i plan on spending as much time as possible on. This rig i have is made for dancing, there would be no way you would be able to accomplish this with a biped. (well you could but it would be an ultra pain in the neck.)

That's great! Even though I encountered some problems with my biped I managed to fix them and finish our team's safety animation:D

I heard that they would be eliminating AVA regional competitions. Is this true? There is no way my animating skill could compete with that! I guess I'll just keep practicing though.

LOL, wow! great job! Thats is the first safety animation to make me actually laugh! Your comedic timing is excellent! You did a very good job capturing the character of Dean. This is the best one I've seen so far.

If I had to find a fault, I'd say the character animation and lip synch on Dean needs a little more work. His head moves a little to slowly and smoothly. Normally you want to make the head movements slight and jerky, but not too jerky and not too slight. (as you can see its a difficult concept to understand). One thing that can really help is really listen to the voice recording. I see you were fortunate enough to have talent for a good voice actor. Try to emphasize on the ups and downs of the voice. It really brings the character out.

That walk cycle of the man carrying the latter is spot on! You've improved greatly since your last project. I can't wait to see what you will dish out this year at the AVA competition!

Very funny. Dean will be so proud. Is that Woodie with the ladder?

Haha, thanks for the review!
Yeah, the animation of Dean was complex, especially in the time we had to do it! I learned a lot along the way though, and if you can tell the animation got better towards the end. I truly think in the beginning I made the movements of the head too big. I need to make movements, but nothing that large.

Also, the lip syncing was difficult because the speech was fast, so it was hard to move the lips to something where the speech was somewhat slurred.

Haha, its not meant to be Woodie, but now that I think of it, he does look like him haha...

But regardless, thanks for the positive comments!

I'm glad you all enjoyed it!

Wow Geekzilla201! Awesome job! I especially loved the Aperture Science logo on the crate haha!

Awesome job though! You fit a lot of safety concepts into that short 30 seconds ;)

wow, im seeing some really great animations here. I'm kicking myself for not having Ted Bordman in time for the safety animation. He's almost ready for the AVA though. So all of you better watch out ;)

Lip synch is my thing, contact me and i can tell you all about it. the main thing is that you want to hit your Ms, Ps, and Bs a frame or two before the actual sound.

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

Thanks Chris. That was one of the problems we faced while making this. We wouldnt talk fast enough to fit it into 30 seconds.

BuddyB309, I agree, there is a lot of good stuff here!

You know, I love your animation, really it's superb and comical. How organized is your animation team might I ask? I hope ours gets organized in time for the main animation. It wasn't that well organized back when we did the safety animation this year, and honestly I had to rush the rest of it in the end (took about 6-7 days to put this all together, minus the side modeling). I would really love to know! :D

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

Testament-Doom, Thanks! Our animation "team" consisted of myself and one other who is not the most organized person in the world. I have no idea how we are gonna do the main animation in our current state. I'm sure we will manage somehow.

Also, for anyone else here, I am curious as to what system you all are doing these animations on? Hardware, specs, jokes?

Mine is:
AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+
4GB DDR2
ATI Radeon 2900XT
1.3TB Combined
ViewSonic G90f CRT
Windows XP Pro x64

Yea, that is a problem for me too (although it works fine for everyone else I know using firefox... weird!)

Here's a direct link, you can just right-click save as and it should work!

and TheOtherGuy- thanks a bunch man, good looking out.

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

What were these animations judged on? What criteria was it?

Magiciandude 06-01-2008 16:30

Re: So who's going to submit a safety animation?

No one knows. They don't release that unfortunately :(
but its my guess that its based on the story-line, considering that its a SAFETY animation competition, not an ANIMATION competition...also it said when they released it that they like nice clear audio. And they tend to pick ones with a narrator...they usually always have anyway...

There is now a .mpg version of the 2008 Safety Animation available, if you're having trouble with the .wmv version
