Well, the weekend has come and gone.

The standings can be found here for the Oregon regionals:

Did anyone see this morning's Doonesbury comic strip?

Yeah... very well timed, isn't it? This series of strips ran last year at about this time, too, and according to one of my ex-students at MIT (co-incidently, the young woman that started our team) "They must have a spy on the inside." The strips were a big hit with everyone who saw them there.

Jason

P.S. Did anyone capture the video for Soap or The Blue Alliance? We've got some footage of our matches from the stands, but never thought to record the official feed.

P.P.S. Thanks to 2605 and 668 for a valiant attempt in the playoffs. I note that we held the winning alliance to their lowest score of the playoffs in our second match, and came within a hurdle or penalty of pushing it to a third game.

We recorded the feed. I am not sure who is working on it, but we should be splitting up the video and uploading them to The Blue Alliance or Soap or both as soon as possible.

Phew! 488 saves the day! I'm really looking forward to catching up on a lot of matches and robots that I missed out on seeing while down in the pits.

Thanks, and see you again in a few weeks.

Did they do much in the way of enforcing the 80" rule at the regional?

We had to trim an arm a few inches shorter before we were allowed to start any matches because the robot was capable of breaking the 80" rule even though the configuration that the robot would need to be in would not happen under normal operations.

I don't believe that anyone was ever penalized on the field for this.

We did have 1 robot (2122?) that had it's starting config on it's hind end - it then had to tip over at the start in order to actually compete. It had a large arm assembly but appeared to stay in the confines of 80" pretty well.

This was my rookie year as a Robot Inspector at the Oregon Regional. Thank you all for fixing all of your problems that we found by the way.

The 80” rule is an odd one to enforce, what the rule is, that if a robot can physically exceed 80” we added a little red dot inside your green inspection dot. This was to indicate that your robot has the capability of exceeding 80” though you sould never play in that operation.

2122 was a tough one to get through inspection. I thank them for their work in getting their robot legal. Their robot starts with the wheels vertical and then during autonomous flops down and plays with a foot print of 60” by 38”, which is very large for the field. They should have gotten a red dot, since if their mast did not stay upright on the flop they could exceed 80”. They came up with a very good method for keeping their flag upright and at 51”.

I would also like to thank all the teams who had problems with rule R89 (All cylinders must be the same size as those on the free cylinder list). You all worked very hard with very little time to meet specs. Sorry to 473, whose dinner I interrupted with this bad news on Thursday about this.

Well - 473 certainly worked it out well - we were together with 2046 throughout the playoffs and made to the finals - OOHH what a rush!!!

By the way - we are trying to attend the Seattle Regional but we may have run into a snag. Since we are a Catholic school, the administration may not us compete during that weekend (Good Friday is the 21st). Have you guys run into similar problems with your school and if so, how did you get around it?

Yeah, being a Jesuit School ourselves I thought we might have a problem with that, but it seems that the school had no major issues with a few (ha...yeah...try 40) student absences that day. We just got lucky I guess.

It might be a bit of time before we're able to parse the video and get it uploaded. The hard drives reside with the mentors rather than kids and we have less free time than they do.

For some reason or another, also, the video was playing at 50% of full speed tonight. We may have to speed everything up artificially.

Re: Oregon Regional 2008

Based on the mast of 2122 being 59.5" tall, I believe that Bryan is correct in his assessment that the 2122 machine stays comfortably inside the 80" restriction - when the robot flops even if the mast down (heaven forbid :) ). Worst case footprint should be something like (19**2+60**2)**0.5 =63" so it is not clear to me (even if the bumpers are added into the calculation) why a red dot would be necessary. In any case, team 2122 had a great weekend at the Northwest regional - even though it seems like we spent ~ 2/3's of it under the cloud of disqualification.

We really enjoyed the referees at the competition (they all seemed like great people) - just had a hard time with the tator bot's flop - which isn't unexpected given all of the robot variants and rules changes that have to be dealt with. It is a daunting task - I hope that the refereeing/inspecting team felt appreciated at the end of the competition - personally I think they did a great job

Team 1983... the Skunkworks... would like to thank everyone at the Oregon Regional for a GREAT time. We felt very welcome and accepted by everyone in our second year of competition.

We extend our best to all of the volunteers and helpers that made this a great regional!!

We would like to particularly thank the REFEREE team for doing an outstanding job for a first regional. You guys had a tough job and you came through with flying colors. (No pun intended...) lol

You know the Skunkworks loves anything in black and white!!!

We would especially like to thank team 492 for choosing us for the elimination rounds and for developing a great strategy with us. We really enjoyed playing with team 2130 too. Our first quarterfinal match was incredible. sorry we could not take the field for the third match.

We would also like to take the opportunity to express our thanks for Team 1359's gracious professionalism in taking their timeout to help us try and make repairs to our lift mechanism. You guys rock!!!

All in all... we had lots of fun and made lots of new friends.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Tacoma for the Microsoft Regional.

If there is anything we can do to help ANYONE ... please never hesitate to ask

The SKUNKS stand ready to help!!!

thanks again to everyone

I've never seen such an organized team. The fact that you had an entire dress code... and got the kids to follow it is unbelievable! I was very impressed by your level of professionalism.

Your CAD work was also amazing. I wouldn't be surprised to see you guys win the AutoDesk award this year.

They played "Sweet Smell of Success" when your team won the safety award :D Coincident? I think not. :yikes:
