Oregon Regional 2008

Hello to all!
We are a pending sign up for the Oregon Regional.
I was wondering what other teams are going to be there!!
I can see the teams on FIRST but what other pending teams are there?
As FIRST has decided to keep everyone in the dark regarding this on the official site I thought I might ask here and see who is planning to be there. We had a great time last year and we are looking forward to seeing all of our friends again and making some new ones!!!

Add to the list:

1. Team 1983 Skunkworks Robotics Seattle, Washington....
2.
3.

See you all thursday morning!
And, if anyone has any problems with their IR boards, we'll be doing code reloads, so drop by our pit if you need a hand.

Re: Oregon Regional 2008

I'll be leaving at the crack of dawn to truck 1280's tools to
Portland and fish my way back after the event. We will
have a setup to re-load IR boards as well, with cables to
run the board on 12 volt power, or 5 volt power, as we
have bybassed the regulator on ours. Drop by our pit
if you need an IR board reloaded. We have the stock code
and also Kevin Watson's recommended fix to try.

Team 360 - thanks from team 2374 (Jesuit Crusaderbots) for lending us batteries for the finals. We would not have finished without your help.

By the way - we are trying to attend the Seattle Regional but we may have run into a snag. Since we are a Catholic school, the administration may not us compete during that weekend (Good Friday is the 21st). Have you guys run into similar problems with your school and if so, how did you get around it?

Yeah... very well timed, isn't it? This series of strips ran last year at about this time, too, and according to one of my ex-students at MIT (co-incidently, the young woman that started our team) "They must have a spy on the inside." The strips were a big hit with everyone who saw them there.

Jason

P.S. Did anyone capture the video for Soap or The Blue Alliance? We've got some footage of our matches from the stands, but never thought to record the official feed.

P.P.S. Thanks to 2605 and 668 for a valiant attempt in the playoffs. I note that we held the winning alliance to their lowest score of the playoffs in our second match, and came within a hurdle or penalty of pushing it to a third game.

We recorded the feed. I am not sure who is working on it, but we should be splitting up the video and uploading them to The Blue Alliance or Soap or both as soon as possible.

We had to trim an arm a few inches shorter before we were allowed to start any matches because the robot was capable of breaking the 80" rule even though the configuration that the robot would need to be in would not happen under normal operations.

I don't believe that anyone was ever penalized on the field for this.

We did have 1 robot (2122?) that had it's starting config on it's hind end - it then had to tip over at the start in order to actually compete. It had a large arm assembly but appeared to stay in the confines of 80" pretty well.

Re: Oregon Regional 2008

This was my rookie year as a Robot Inspector at the Oregon Regional. Thank you all for fixing all of your problems that we found by the way.

The 80” rule is an odd one to enforce, what the rule is, that if a robot can physically exceed 80” we added a little red dot inside your green inspection dot. This was to indicate that your robot has the capability of exceeding 80” though you sould never play in that operation.

2122 was a tough one to get through inspection. I thank them for their work in getting their robot legal. Their robot starts with the wheels vertical and then during autonomous flops down and plays with a foot print of 60” by 38”, which is very large for the field. They should have gotten a red dot, since if their mast did not stay upright on the flop they could exceed 80”. They came up with a very good method for keeping their flag upright and at 51”.

I would also like to thank all the teams who had problems with rule R89 (All cylinders must be the same size as those on the free cylinder list). You all worked very hard with very little time to meet specs. Sorry to 473, whose dinner I interrupted with this bad news on Thursday about this.

Yeah, being a Jesuit School ourselves I thought we might have a problem with that, but it seems that the school had no major issues with a few (ha...yeah...try 40) student absences that day. We just got lucky I guess.

It might be a bit of time before we're able to parse the video and get it uploaded. The hard drives reside with the mentors rather than kids and we have less free time than they do.

For some reason or another, also, the video was playing at 50% of full speed tonight. We may have to speed everything up artificially.

Re: Oregon Regional 2008

Based on the mast of 2122 being 59.5" tall, I believe that Bryan is correct in his assessment that the 2122 machine stays comfortably inside the 80" restriction - when the robot flops even if the mast down (heaven forbid :) ). Worst case footprint should be something like (19**2+60**2)**0.5 =63" so it is not clear to me (even if the bumpers are added into the calculation) why a red dot would be necessary. In any case, team 2122 had a great weekend at the Northwest regional - even though it seems like we spent ~ 2/3's of it under the cloud of disqualification.

We really enjoyed the referees at the competition (they all seemed like great people) - just had a hard time with the tator bot's flop - which isn't unexpected given all of the robot variants and rules changes that have to be dealt with. It is a daunting task - I hope that the refereeing/inspecting team felt appreciated at the end of the competition - personally I think they did a great job

Team 1983... the Skunkworks... would like to thank everyone at the Oregon Regional for a GREAT time. We felt very welcome and accepted by everyone in our second year of competition.

We extend our best to all of the volunteers and helpers that made this a great regional!!

We would like to particularly thank the REFEREE team for doing an outstanding job for a first regional. You guys had a tough job and you came through with flying colors. (No pun intended...) lol

You know the Skunkworks loves anything in black and white!!!

We would especially like to thank team 492 for choosing us for the elimination rounds and for developing a great strategy with us. We really enjoyed playing with team 2130 too. Our first quarterfinal match was incredible. sorry we could not take the field for the third match.

We would also like to take the opportunity to express our thanks for Team 1359's gracious professionalism in taking their timeout to help us try and make repairs to our lift mechanism. You guys rock!!!

All in all... we had lots of fun and made lots of new friends.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Tacoma for the Microsoft Regional.

If there is anything we can do to help ANYONE ... please never hesitate to ask

The SKUNKS stand ready to help!!!

thanks again to everyone

I've never seen such an organized team. The fact that you had an entire dress code... and got the kids to follow it is unbelievable! I was very impressed by your level of professionalism.

Your CAD work was also amazing. I wouldn't be surprised to see you guys win the AutoDesk award this year.

They played "Sweet Smell of Success" when your team won the safety award :D Coincident? I think not. :yikes:

Re: Oregon Regional 2008

Hello everyone,

This is the driver and captain of Team Kika Mana (368) and I would like to take this time to thank both Team 1540 and Team 1280 for being such excellent alliance partners.

We would like to thank Team 1540 for choosing us first overall, out of the other 53 other possible teams. You had such an awesome hybrid mode which made up of about a 1/4 of our final score. Your holonomic wheels and your smart driving made for very effective defense against our opponents.

We would also like to thank Team 1280 for somehow staying available for the last pick. Both 1540 and our team had you in our top picks and we could not believe it that you were available at the end. You had a solid, consistent arm that could place the trackball with ridiculous ease.

Another team that we would like to recognize is Team 488. They are an all-around awesome team and we were more than happy to have them as pit neighbors. They also generously invited us to their lab when we made a stop in Seattle and we could not be more appreciative of them for hosting us.

Team 473, Team 2046, and Team 2374 were a strong alliance to face in the finals. They truly gave us a run for our money and pushed the finals to three.

And finally, thanks to all the judges, referees, volunteers, and teams in Portland for making the Oregon Regional so great.

John Paik

(By the way, we have video of our elimination matches here. Scroll down to the bottom and click the "Watch Video" links.)

Re: Oregon Regional 2008

Hello everyone! I am from team 2192 (Dac Attack) And this was our second year in Robotics, and my first year. I have to say, this was the most amazing this I went to all year! I particularly loved the random dance sections!
I would like to thank team 847 (Phred) for putting out our computer (A school compie) when it caught fire (not kidding!) during a match. We feel very very lucky to have them as neighbors. (And the closest team to us).

Our robot wasn't so fortunate though, the wired were crimped wrong and we ended up losing power because the impacts from hybrid knocked our connectors loose. When our robot was moving we were able to preform fairly well I believe. Our driver got really nervous though at times.
Again, Phred had an amazing robot! I like the R2 esque-ness.
