2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Did not see a 2008 Davis Sac Regional. thread We waited till late last year to have one. Team 1662 is looking forward to seeing all our old friends in March.
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
973 won't be able to see all our old friends, to close to SVR. I wish they hadn't moved the date... I like Davis.
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Seems to be a problem for a lot of other teams. So far only 21 teams are signed up.
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
1726 decided to go to LA this year, for a variety of reasons, we'll miss ya'all!

1726 you will be missed by 1662. See you in Atlanta.
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
8 was going to go, but it's too close to both SVR and Vegas... oh well, see you guys in Portland!
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Are you looking forward to seeing all your new friends as well? :D Team 2144 will be going to Davis as our second regional right after Silicon Valley. (And that really is right after, isn't it? I hope FedEx is up for the challenge!) We can't wait!
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
115 will be there too! We managed to raise enough money to go again! Davis is always a fun regional :) I remember when Davis was back to back to SVR in 2006. Can't wait to do that again! :D See you all there!

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
We are ready for another year at Davis as well. I think filling those registration spots will be a bit slower this year with spring break and the easter holiday - but exciting nonetheless.
Even though it is so close, FedEx may not be you best bet unless you pay extra for quicker delivery. The crates get delivered to the event site Wednesday - usually in the morning or early afternoon, which means the crates really need to be at the drayage site end of the day Tuesday. Since FedEx doesn't work Sundays, that means the SVR crates won't get picked up until Monday in San Jose. Sure if everything is running smooth than it could show up on Tuesday, but one hick-up and you end up with a late crate. Since FedEx donates shipping, they are under no obligation to expedite these crates. This why FIRST usually recommends using Shepard Expo Services to take your crate between back to back regionals. I remember back in 2002, they let a group of teams go in on a moving truck to get our crates from SVR to LA. That was like 10 teams, we each chipped in $100. I don't think they allow that anymore and have Shepard Expo Services take care of that. |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
997 can't decide whether to go to Davis or Seattle for our second regional. but I'm rooting for Davis, we might see you all there ;)
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
It's been decided we're going to davis, check SHOULD be on its way :)
had a bundle of fun last time and I absolutely loved the campus, and last years president will be making the trip over from Stanford for the competition, nice to get the old team back together :D |

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Team 766 is going, right after SVR:D . Davis falls right at the end of our spring break, though, so it's all fine. We're also hoping to get to the Championships. Many of our alumni are at Davis, so it'll be fun to see them. Every year, it seems someone from 766 has gone to Davis. Wonder who it'll be this year.

I'm so bummed, I'm a freshman at UC Davis this year, after being on 114 for 4 years, and I was looking forward to volunteering at "my" regional, but I have one or two finals every day of competition :( Though I'll definitely be dropping by every day to root on my alma mater team and everyone else competing. I can't wait to find out what the game is! See you all there!

At least Mike is able to come by at all.
114 has now officially stepped up our regional plan from crazy to insanity. It appears we're on for SVR, Davis, Portland, and we're also budgeting for Champs. Yikes. This will be a busy season. |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
675 should be there.
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
I'm going to try go and do robot inspector like I did at nationals last year, hope to see everyone there.

1388 and "Hammer Time" will be there .. after a few little mods it should be working better than it did at SD.
Anyone know if Sundial will be ran? |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
yeah we had to make some mods from san diego too. Mainly modifying our pulleys for our arm so we don't have to constantly raise and lower it (using all our precious air) If all goes well i expect us to do very good.

Team 2551 (The Penguin Empire) will be there.
GO AURORA! (our robot) |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Wow, we're still celebrating our SVR win and Davis is already quickly approaching.
For those of you who saw us at SVR, we haven't played to our full potential just yet, not even close. Davis should be very different from SVR for the team, well, maybe except the final result. Hey, a guy can dream can't he?:p |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
yeah year SVR win
but I'm super excited we leave tomorrow morning for the long drive down and should reach our hotel in time to eat, watch the new southpark and get to sleep! See you all at competition! |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Looks like 1388 will be bringing Sundial with them.
Stop by our pit for more information. |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
1458 will be showing off everything we have that we didn't really get to show off at SVR.
Looking to defend our title |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
we uncrate in less then 12 hours.....cant wait to see the pheonix again!
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
i'll probably drop by... sans robot unfortunately... but very much looking forward to seeing all of you who were at Portland and SVR, as well as all of you I haven't seen yet!
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Hiyaa. I'm from 1868, and while we didn't have enough funds to do both SVR and Davis this year, I at least, still wanted to drop by. I was wondering if there was anyone from the San jose area going up late Thursday/early Friday, and if so, if I could perhaps hitch a ride. I know it's a shot in the dark here but just throwing it out there.
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
How about this: in Davis, as I type. My family decided to come up on Wednesday so we could do the UC Davis tour (junior year) and spare the 6am car ride. Looks like a few other teams have arrived already too, presumably those traveling from further away. I saw the ARC Pavilion today and it looks nice and freshly scrubbed for 3 days of robots... :D
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Gah, why am I still here at 1 am? I need to be up in three hours... I'll see you in seven hours or so.
Oh, really, freshly scrubbed? Well, in about nine hours it will be scrubbed again by robots, directly into the nice shiny polycarb... |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
i feel so lazy. Im leaving bright and early at..... 8:00AM. I'll see you guys soon. I am so excited to see you guys and the robot since the last time I saw the whole group or the robot was ship date

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
A bunch of us from Paly Robotics will be up at Davis tomorrow, and we'd love to help anyone if you need it. We're not sure what we'll be doing, or if we'll be volunteering or anything, but if you need any help (that we could help you with), please let us know if you see us walking around aimlessly :P
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
I'm going up to Davis in the morning to visit some of my friends going there. I'm gonna try to stop by the event to watch the playoffs. Good luck to all the teams. Make the playoffs exciting for those of us who just get to watch and not play.;)
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
The competition is looking nice so far, teams are doing quite well. However it seems that yesterday, almost everything that could break for our team did,
We had 2 very loose chains (removed links and tightened up) A loose shifter (re-tightened) one of our solenoids was leaking air through the exhaust portion, that wasn't just exhaust air. (we swapped out the solenoid) our arm snapped off, it had been under alot of stress and i was impressed with how long it lasted (we had spares and swapped it out) but now i feel we're in peak playing condition. I'm afraid we won't get picked, (we're rank like 30+) :( but we know that whoever chooses us will be especially pleased, when we play alot better than yesterday. :D |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
115 Wins Again!!!
Wow, what luck. lol Congrats to the other champions; teams 1662 and 2122. I'm looking forward to seeing the Potato-bot (2122) again in Atlanta! Another very solid machine from 1662. Also congrats to the finalists teams 1388, 1072, 2551, and (replacement team) 2390. It was awesome watching you guys boot your way through the eliminations! :D I was aso very impressed with team 766. Unfortunately we won't be seeing any more of them this year, but they had a great robot (1st pick, and one of the best hurdlers at Davis). Way to go rep-ing the Sequoia Union HS District!!! Anyone want to post who won what? I didn't stay for the awards ceremony. |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Davis was fun. We won GP!!!! grats to local rookie team 2390 for becoming finalists, and beating out us, a 5th year vet team.

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Congratulations on the win, 1662! 1726 was less fortunate at LA, so it looks like we won't be seeing you at Atlanta... perhaps we'll make another appearance at Sacramento next year and meet up with you guys again! Also, congratulations to the rest of the winning alliance, the finalist alliance, and every other team that managed to go to Sacramento! I sure did miss it this year...:yikes:
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Congratulations to everyone Davis was fun this year....
that is until we were leaving and I tripped on the stairs and nailed my knee on the corner. EDIT: I have to say I was dumbstruck but amazed when the team(forget the number, memory loss from lack of sleep) DECLINED picking their alliance. That was something that no matter how much I wanted to I don't think I would be able to force myself to turn down picking our alliance. |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Congratulations to all the finalists. I was able to come by the event for a couple hours and really enjoyed seeing some really cool robots. Robots not in the finals that I really liked were 701 and 766. I gotta get a couple of my friends up at Davis to get involved next year.
|
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
That team played fewer matches than everyone else because they arrived late to the regional. But I think it was very honorable what they did. It must have been the hardest decision ever.
So unfortunate for our Alliance though. I feel really sorry because the other teams on our alliance were probably depending on us to be their hurdler but we were having trouble with our forklift during the whole regional. But none the less our first match was probably my favorite. Knocked off two balls in Hybrid mode and crossed 3 lines! Good luck to the winning alliance and the Fembots on their Chairmans Award. P.S. Major Kudos to team 1388 I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR ROBOT. (Second to my own teams of course lol) |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
1388 had a great time at Davis. Congrats to the winners and everyone else. We had a blast going thru the finals with 2551 and 1072 .. and we were shocked when we were called for the EI award again (we won it at Davis in 2005).
Glad to see everyone liked the boot - it's been really cool to do something unique like that .. although we still aren't getting control of the trackball as much as we'd like to. Oh well  For all that asked, I'll download the field feed off my DVR as soon as I catch up on some sleep, and I'll get them up on soap. We'll be back in Atlanta and can't wait to see our SD and SAC friends there again! :D |

I totally did not expect what happened today. So I guess I called it right, in a way. We won(thanks to teams 2122 and 1662 for picking us), though when I made that call, I was definitely not thinking about winning as the second round pick. It's gotta take a ton of luck to win 2 straight regionals in this fashion. And I have to admit it is a really wierd feeling. 2159: WOW, I am amazed at how they decided to give up their alliance captain spot, they deserve praise for having what it takes to do something like that. And congrats to team 692 on winning the Chairman's Award! |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
I read somewhere here that someone was posting video on soap. I'm too tired right now to search for it, but I was wondering if I could get the uncut footage of the finals and the uncut footage of awards.
Please PM me if you have either of those |

Can someone go into a little more detail about what exactly happened with the giving up alliance captain business for the people that weren't there?
Thanks a bunch. |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
I am extremely proud of the teams at Davis this weekend. I saw a lot of classy act all weekend.
2159 graciously stepped down from alliance captain because they missed a lot of matches on Friday and did not think they deserved to be in that position. So when alliance selection came, they got on the field and said so. That took a lot of guts. I also saw another team struggling to decide whom to pick (probably because they did not expect to be an alliance captain), and I saw one of 115's member rushed over with their scouting laptop to give that team valuable scouting info. That was another classy act. That's not to mention all the things that happens at a regional competition on and off the field. All in all, you were incredible! The matches really got going once we were in the finals! Lots of hurdling robots, lots of action, lots of interesting defense. It was great! On a side note, I like to humbly thank our MC for letting me follow him onto the field for a while, practicing announcing the teams. That was a lot of fun. I've always dreamed of doing that at an event. Who knows, I might try to do more, and if I do, it will definitely be better next time. I would like to suggest, though, that some of the flag poles be made lighter... (Now if anyone have any picture... I would love to get them ;) ) |

OMG! We made it to Finals! I am really surprised! I would like to thank a few teams that helped us get there:
To our Alliance Partners 1388 - 'Hammer Time' is an incredible machine and it REALLY helped us. 1072 - Despite your guy's problems with your robot, you guys still helped a bunch. We couldn't do it without you guys. 2390 - You guys had the opportunity to sub in during our final matches. Thanks. Other teams: 675 - You guys really helped us during the build process. Huge thanks. 2035 - You guys had an awesome robot. You guys deserved more than just semifinals. |

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Forgive me for throwing a wrench into the post-Davis optimism.
I was utterly disgusted with the refereeing at that competition. Between not counting hurdles and calling very debatable <G22>s, our team was beset by constant headaches due to the referees. Note that the head ref at Davis was the same ref that went into round four at SVR. |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Quote:
On the other hand there was a couple times where I would be standing behind our drivers see a team pull around FULL SPEED into our drivers station then go over a line backwards and NO PENALTY, no g22, no ramming, nothing. I look up to see the ref who's supposed to be watching our area looking across the field. On the other hand I liked the MC and the Announcer, I think this was the first time doing mc or announcer for them. |

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional

We were all sick of the disembodied voice by the end of Davis. (but that's just one team's opinion) We're going to write a letter to FIRST to complain about how the refs can inadvertently carry one alliance to victory over another. The game this year had the potential to be great (I was very excited at kickoff) but between penalties and the referees, it turned into one big headache. Despite my complaining and outright anger, the matches we played were honest-to-goodness fun. We all had a great time. Congratulations to all teams. Sam |

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
I did find the MC pretty funny and I especially loved how when it go to the finals the "Unadulterared Excitment" turned into just "Pure passion and excitment"

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
Well that was a lot of fun!
A summary of the weekend for 2144: On Thursday, we only sent 4 students and two mentors. We replaced our 12:1 gearboxes with 9:1s to increase our speed from about 13fps to around 17fps, and replaced our constantly bending Coolie Dualie omni wheels with AndyMark plastic omnis. We had no problems with our drivetrain for the whole competition, while we had to bend the old wheels back into shape after nearly every match at SVR. On Friday, the rest of the team came and we began the qualifications. A PWM cable came out before the first match, causing us to have 3/4ths of a drivetrain. Our amazing driver was able to control our omnidrive like a tank by only using the good diagonal and made our robot look like it was still fully functional. Once some hot glue on the PWMs made sure our robot could always drive with all the wheels, the autonomous was able to get three lines in a majority of the matches. We used IR to signal the turns, a simple solution that worked much better than the complicated ultrasonic based autonomous we had previously attempted. However, this did limit us to three lines as the IR would not work all the way across the field and through the plexiglass. We tried to use another alliance partner's robocoach to signal the last turn, but the angle to the IR receiver prevented this from working. Not being able to signal the robot past the third line became a huge problem when the lane was clear. One of the first times we got 3 lines, the robot got hung up on the center afterwards, coming to a nice stop. Another match, it bumped some other robots on the way and slowed down. But when the lane was clear, it accelerated over the entire length of the field and hit our own alliance's wall traveling at full speed. Even better was that our robot rammed our own driver's station, so we ended up destroying our own joystick and earning a disable for the match. I then changed the speed of robot after its second turn at to what I thought would be a nice leisurely amble across the third line... but the value I picked was reasonable with the old drivetrain. The robot dutifully accelerated to what appeared to observers as full speed and hit our alliance's wall once again, earning another disable and the gift of a yellow card. Our alliance still won that match by the points we earned in autonomous, proving that we couldn't afford to disable the hybrid mode altogether. Later on Friday, we received the Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control Award for our omnidrive and use of the gyroscope in autonomous, a real surprise to our team. On Friday, anxious not to be disqualified as we displayed our pretty yellow flag, we started our autonomous by stopping after two lines and slowly worked up to getting the third once again. Our driver continued to play great legal defense, keeping the ball away from hurdlers and decapping at the end of matches. We may have even blocked a hurdle from 1388 with our extended poker stick (whether it would have gone over is arguable, but seeing the ball bounce backwards was really something!) We ended up the 12th seeded team, and captained the 7th alliance. Together with 1351 (TKO) and 852 (Athenian Robotics Collective), we put on a real fight in the finals. We lost the first match, but with a total of 4 lines in autonomous, defense, Mitty's great hurdling, and the Athenians helping ensure Mitty always had a trackball, we won our second quarterfinal match by a large margin. The third match ended with our alliance losing by a painfully close score of 58 to 56 after a penalty assessed on our alliance. 2551 and 1388 had truly impressive robots that we can't be ashamed to lose to despite as bitter a match ending as close as possible (especially with a penalty) can make someone. Eagle Robotics' hammer was amazing to watch, and the Penguin Empire's robot made their team number seem several thousand too high. I would like to thank Mitty and the Athenians one more time for being on our alliance. There aren't two teams I would rather have the pleasure of working with. And lastly, congratulations again to 852 on winning the General Motors Industrial Design Award - us getting an award for our omnidrive just didn't feel right with yours in the same competition! |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
The finals were some great matches.
Our robot was the only hurdler but 2144 made sure we always ended hybrid mode with a points advantage. 852 was by far the best herder I have seen (a true testament to how effective a well-thought-out design is). We hurdled as much as we could while trying to stay in the quadrant of the field closest to our alliance station wall. We had some awesome teamwork going as 852 would bring the trackballs around to the quadrant we were parked in so we could catapult them over the overpass one after another. While I still think it was the penalties that determined that match, the other alliance was very admirable. 1388's catapult blotted out the sun and 2551 was a very reliable hurdler (not to mention a great hybrid routine). Our season is over, so it's fitting to say: see you all next year! |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
To me there were 2 high points to the weekend. The first one was the first match of the quarter-finals, where we scored 40 points in autonomous and manage to beat the first ranked alliance, they went on to win the next two, but we made em work for it!
The seconed high point was 2390, a little backround to the story first. In my school district a new high school was created, for expansion and such. The former 1458 (Monte Vista, who is also in our district) mentor went over to Doherty Valley (2390) to start a robotics program. But this new high school is only freshmen and sophomores. With help from us and 1458 they made the "little box on wheels" (my favorite design!). We helped them program and get their autonomous going, and I helped them when a PWM cable caught fire patched it up. They ran tough and ranked 15th, but were not selected for the finals, but since they were the highest ranked non chosen. they were stuck in the back up spot for the finals. While 1516 and 1458 were watching the final matches we saw 2390 get qued up to go in and play in the finals. So Monte Vista (1458) and California High (1516) went down to cheer as hard as we could. and even though they didnt win, to see how nervous and how much fun they were having even when they lost almost brought a tear to my eye. Yea... I enjoyed my first year as a mentor... |

second place didnt get us to atlanta, but we werent bummed for to long- we got the eniginering inspiration award! thanks to all of our team members who were interviewed for the chairmans award, your interview got us to atlanta!!! Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
I pretty much have to say that was a AWESOME experience. No one on our team I think really thought we would get that far, being a rookie and all. Our arm almost broke once ore twice which was rather scary, but expected. It was so cool getting to see all the other robots and meeting all sorts of new people. Thanks to all the teams who helped us out, that was a blast! can't wait for next year :D . fyi the little penguine tied to the side of our robot did survive ;)

Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
This is a little belated but thanks on behalf of Team 766 to everyone at Davis for a great competition! We were impressed by many of the other robots, especially among rookie or sophomore teams. Those of you with numbers in the 2000s and already captaining alliances into the finals are no doubt going to be winning Chairman's awards in the near future :D Some of my personal favorites were 1388 with their hammer – I've had a soft spot for rotating catapults since 2006 – and 2122 with their enormous flop-bot.
Also, I want to thank and congratulate our alliance partners, 2035 and 1147. We played some simply amazing matches and had a great time working with such friendly and enthusiastic teams. Special thanks to 2035 for picking us out of 7th place, for executing great strategy, and for knocking us free from the central divider in the match where our auton went haywire. Your robot was pure awesome and I've been an admirer of it since SVR. We'll look forward to seeing you all next year! |
Re: 2008 Davis Sacramento Regional
i thought that UC Davis was great! yeah, i wish 1388 won in the final, but at least we won the E.I. i did see that the refs were kinda picking on us and when there were time when we were blocked even over the 6 second rule, they wernt called whihc really made me mad. i also did not like the announcer (not the guy in the actual field, but the guy that was "the disembodied voice"). that guy was just annoying. "the robots have taken over the world"? "the zebras are huddling"? "1...2....3.... charge"? why couldnt he have just said go? but ya, UC Davis was the bomb. btw, thanks 1662 for being so cool to us. also thanks to our alliance partners. you guys were awesome!
