2008 New Jersey Regional

When: Feb. 28, 2000 - March 1, 2008
Where: Sovereign Bank Arena

Looks like there will be some great team attending the NJ Regional once again!!! Feel free to discuss anything relating to this regional even here :]

2008 NJ Regional Team List

As of today, November 15th, there are 57 teams and no one on the waiting list.

I'm so excited! 1923 will be there, and this will be my 10th (as per my count, my first was when I was 7...but, you know, I'm probably miscounting) consecutive year there. Can't wait!

237 won't be competing in NJ this year, but I may just drop in on Friday/Saturday to scope out the game and all of it's first week craziness. ;)

Good luck to all teams!

108's coming up to New Jersey this year (for real this time!) It'll be my first time at a Week 1 regional.

2 Quick Questions from a Floridian:
Will there be snow?
AND
What's there cool to do near the arena?

Snow is possible but not that likely. Cool - I suggest you NOT hang around the arena because you might get shot. Look up last years thread for whats cool to do in NJ. If not, I am sure someone else will post about things to do.

Well, in March there is probably not going to be any snow. There might be some remnants of it on the ground, but very little.

There are some great cities by Trenton. Princeton isn't too far away and there are a handful of things to do there.

I am going to second Bharat Nain's suggestion. Don't hang out by the arena otherwise you are liable to be shot at.

Oh, please. You can get knifed or beaten, too... (Ammo is soooo expensive...)

Seriously: Trenton is a less than average big city - kinda like any downtown in older parts of the country. It is seeing a resurgence and rebirth, of which the arena is a part, but parts of it are still not really safe after dark. There IS plenty to do, though, just not right there.

Snow: Maybe but probably not. March is a little late in the season for any kind of serious snow - but we've had snow that late a few times in the past decade.

I heard someone is organizing a team social this year on Friday?

Snow = very unlikely, unless there is a MASSIVE cold front haha. in jersey, we do things our own way :p But it will be cool... around what it is today in Jersey (45-50) perhaps a bit warmer - WHO KNOWS! Definately jacket weather lol.

Kool things to do in Jersey in March - man I've been here 18 years, and all March is for me is birthdays and FIRST  Haha

Thanks for the quick responses. Today it was "cold" in Ft. Lauderdale, 57 degrees, and kids are walking around school with blankets, heavy coats, mittens, and scarves...

I'll have to warn the team about getting proper attire so they don't get sick and make sure that we're not staying anywhere near the arena. Too bad about the lack of snow though :(

The CT Regional still has some open spots if you want to see snow.
It's almost guaranteed with the CT regional that a snowstorm happens that weekend. (We had a huge one last year on Friday evening/Saturday morning that dumped at least a foot or 2 on the state overnight.

I would have to say 5 out of the last 7 years at least it has snowed at least 6" that weekend.

And to top it all off, it's a large regional with the proposed 2 field set-up.

Just something to consider if you REALLY want to see some snow this year while competing. Just make sure to get a hotel close to the venue. :D

If you are looking for a place to stay that is near the arena, there is a new hotel that just opened - Hilton Garden Inn on Route 130 South in Hamilton. It is about a 15 minute drive from the arena. There is a large shopping center directly across the highway with lots of restaurants and stores.

Well to all of the nay-sayers about the snow, need I remind you all of two years ago when we got an ice/snow storm the day before the regional? You know the one where half the teams couldn't get there until half way through the day and the crowd was sparse at best? Or how about LAST year when we got a foot and a half of snow in week 4 or 5 of the competitions (I forget which week, but it was the week of the Chesapeake/NYC regional) and teams had to walk 20 blocks in snow and slush to get from Penn Station to the Javitz Centre?

Trust me, if you're from Florida (or anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line) you will be cold, and I'm willing to bet there will be snow. (It snows right through April out here, trust me, it's snowed every April since I've been born.)

Other than that, there's not much to do around here so I'd suggest making plans ahead of time, and trust me THIS regional is one that you WON'T want to miss!

 :D :ahh:

Very good point George - I totally forgot about that snow incident. Many teams could not go because their school told them no - that seems to be the only true damper if there is enough snow (to cancel school). Hopefully we do not have to have this issue because we want all teams possible to show up Thursday to get their testing in. 2 years ago, many teams were not able to do that :( But we are all optomistic and will hope for sunny, warm, pleasant weather for the NJ Regional :)

Re: 2008 New Jersey Regional

the weather really varies based on the year. The competition is the time NJ spring sports start. Some years the fields are covered in snow, other times you can wear shorts. so bring pants and a jacket, but snow isn't guaranteed.

its kinda interesting sliding all the way down (not exaggerating) a icy/slushy mountain in an SUV, luckily the roads were empty

303 will of course be in attendance =]

Although in NJ we are unable to control the weather, as it has been said.. we can almost guarantee it will be nice and cold for everyone; as I'm sure you will all realize while standing in line Thursday morning, bright and early =D

Should be a greattttt competition, and we are ALL very excited on 303.

Sounds good to me. :D Team 1676 will bring our experiences from the Palmetto Regional social back up north... perhaps starting a game of X-Treme Duck Duck Goose!

And as for the weather:

I definitely remember a few years ago, when it snowed the Thursday of Trenton. My team was ready to call up kids in school, but they were all out early! :yikes:

My favorite advice I've ever heard about bad, icy weather was from one of my robotics coaches. He said something along the lines of, "Remember, in this kind of weather [icy, rain/hail/snow storms], your car will regard turning commands as merely a suggestion." :) Good advice if you ask me.

Re: 2008 New Jersey Regional

My best advice is MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HEAVY COAT. The Thursday morning when you get there, you will have to stand outside until the arena doors open at 8am. Typically, first week in February it's COLD. Most kids bring sweatshirts or windbreakers, and me, being a Jersey native, I still think they're crazy. Bring something to keep you warm - even if that means wearing gloves and a scarf. You'll be glad not to go home with a cold!

And George...Javits is only 8 blocks from Penn Station. And the walk wasn't THAT bad. Most of the sidewalks were pretty clear by Sunday.

Well Saturday they were still pretty bad, and 20 is just as much as 8....at least when walking through slush in the cold me thinks.

Either way...the Weather Channel is your best friend when you're planning on what to wear to a regional....and remember people, the venue is an ICE RINK...we can't do anything about the heat, if we did we'd have a water game on our hands. Granted, I know you FIRSTers wouldn't be opposed to that, now would you?

Re: 2008 New Jersey Regional

As always team 41 will be in attendence. and hopfully not at the bottom of the boards. Swear to god odd years are bad luck. Even year baby, were ready to bring some heat.

That storm back in 06 was THE WORST. We still had school, but they told us we were'nt allowed to go. Luckily our coach got an "emergency field trip" and got some guys down late in the day on thursday. Hopfully we will not have such a problem this year. Last year we actualy started to clear thos "emergency field trips" ahead of time.

Judging by the scores from 2007, I will definitely keep an eye on the progress of the NJ regional. VCU had more defense/ramps than offensive bots, hopefully it'll balance out this year.

Re: 2008 New Jersey Regional

Rookie Team 2590 will definitely there. Shoutout to Team Mercury!

As for the weather, NJ is known for bipolar weather, so will get the best of both extremes. 60 degrees in August, 70 in January. You really never know what we will get, but we are way overdue for snow, since we've had very little.

George A. 20-01-2008 21:54

Re: 2008 New Jersey Regional

Calling all NJ Regional Teams:

The planning committee is looking for 8-10 mascots to help out with this years opening ceremonies.

What constitutes a mascot? To put it simply anything that is wacky and that isn't your normal uniform. (Just wearing your uniform and coloring your hair wouldn't apply, but if you colored your hair while wearing a bird head, then you're good)

If you're interested send me a PM, and i'll let you know the details. If you're not sure as to whether or not you're a mascot, just send me a picture.

Hoping for a fantastic competition this year.

SUPPORT YOUR MENTORS!!

We at New Jersey FIRST would like to recognize all of our volunteers and give them a public “Thank You!” Please submit a list of all your team's mentors so we can once again create a Wall of Recognition for everyone's hard work. We could not allow the 2007 season to come to an end without recognizing your outstanding efforts.

Recognize now! Please contact Michele Zubatkin at malka_elke AT yahoo DOT com and be sure to include your first and last name, your team number, and a list of all the mentors and supporters your team would ilke to recognize at the NJ Regional.

Hey,
I posted this in the fund raising section also.

Team 1279 is hosting a fund raising event at the cheeburger cheeburger in Lawrenceville NJ on February 28th (the Thursday of the New Jersey Regional.) It's a ten minute drive from the arena.

Please talk to your team and try and get them to come and help us out.

All the information is in the post labeled "Anybody going to the New Jersey Regional" in the fund raising section.

Thanks and good luck

This is a FANTASTIC idea! Sometimes I think these mentors don't get the recognition they really deserve... great way to get them to see :) Everyone going to the New Jersey Regional should deffinately get on this - show you're mentors how much they are appreciated yall, cause they'll certainly appreciate it right back!

Sorry, but according to the update that went out to the team contacts this week there will not be a team social this year. I suggest that teams spend that energy at the event on Friday, instead!

Awww... Too bad I'll only be there on Saturday, or I would volunteer to bring the Banana suit again for that. lol
That was a great time last year! :D

Good luck everyone! We miss seeing all of you.
I dont know how you folks can handle the cold.
I remember waiting outside last year before they opened the doors. I had to go back into the minivan. Yet, I see students with just a team t-shirt on.

(current temperature in Waialua: 78F, current temperature in Trenton: 32F)

We'll miss you and your hula lesson, too! Good luck at your new home regional! I'm sure you'll be sorry to hear that you're missing this lovely seasonal weather, too:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING, WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM FRIDAY TO 1 AM EST SATURDAY.

SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT AND ACCUMULATE UP TO TWO INCHES BY DAWN. THE SNOW WILL CONTINUE DURING THE DAY FRIDAY, BUT IT IS EXPECTED TO MIX WITH OR CHANGE TO SLEET, FREEZING RAIN OR RAIN LATE IN THE AFTERNOON. PRECIPITATION MAY CHANGE BACK TO SNOW BEFORE ENDING BY DAWN SATURDAY.

AT THIS TIME, THE FORECAST TOTAL OF SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATION IS 3 TO 5 INCHES, WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS OVER NORTHWEST CHESTER, UPPER MONTGOMERY AND UPPER BUCKS COUNTIES IN PENNSYLVANIA AND OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF NORTH CENTRAL NEW JERSEY.

IN ADDITION, ONE-QUARTER TO ONE-HALF INCH OF ICE ACCRUAL IS EXPECTED DURING THE PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN. THIS LEVEL OF ICE ACCRUAL CAN CAUSE DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES AND RESULT IN POWER OUTAGES.

THIS STORM IS FORECAST TO DIRECTLY IMPACT THE FRIDAY MORNING AND EVENING COMMUTES. PEOPLE WHO NEED TO COMMUTE ON FRIDAY SHOULD ALLOW EXTRA TIME.

I was just told that the Chesapeake regional is not a fully enclosed stadium and that it could be very cold there also. I guess I have to sneak the minivan in the pit area too.
We have 8 girls on the team now, so they are practicing a bigger and newer hula dance.:D

I think the record in Hawaii change of temp in a single day is 10 degrees or less. Cant imagine a bigger change than that.
So in conclusion, I need to bring a team t-shirt and bring snow gear just in case.:D
We actually have Island Snow ski and snowboarding gears in Hawaii. For the life of me, I dont know how the heck they stay in business here. I just dont get it.

According to "nasa.robotics.gov", a webcast will be provided by SOAP.

That's correct! I spoke with the advisor for Team 108 and he assured me that SOAP would webcast and record the New Jersey Regional. When I get more information about where you can watch it live, I'll let you know!

Being my first year on a FRC team I cant wait to see what other teams have done and see how a FRC event compares to FTC. :)

Good Luck everyone!

(Oh, also be sure to swing by the FTC demo that my FTC team and the other winners of the NJ regional will be putting on, on Saturday.)
