Does our name suggest violence?

We have recently named out team the "War Hawks"
I was wondering if the word war implies aggression and violence, and if the name would effect our chance at winning the Rookie All Star Award

thank you!

Does this name in some way correspond w/your school or mascot?

In other words, what's a little of the history behind the name?

Re: Does our name suggest violence?

Our school's mascot is a Hawk
War just came in there since a few people thought War Hawks would sound cool

I think there are other threads about naming teams, but I don't believe that a team is judged for awards based on its name...

Something to consider, though, is how you will market your team - mascot, etc.

I am not associated in any way with the awards, but in my opinion* the team name has little influence on getting an award - at least, a team name like that. Something obscene might negatively affect the chances, but that's a different issue.

But our team did win the Rookie All-Star award, and so from that experience I can say that the main goal is really really embracing the values of FIRST - Gracious professionalism. It is not about the robot, it is about the people, more specifically how your people interact with and treat other people.

We were fortunate enough to have a robot that just wouldn't break, and so almost everyone on our team., all fired up from building a robot, wanted to do more of that - so we went around, helping anyone who wanted/needed it. Bringing tools, equipment, supplies, parts, spares, helping hands, and expertise. And, I guess some teams really appreciated it. Heck, we were just doing what we love to do.

comBAT or w/e that team's name is (sorry i cant think right now) is like fighting, but i think its really cool. War Hawks to me is just like ready to battle. Still, it's good to think throught those things.

Re: Does our name suggest violence?

War Hawk is a term originally used to describe a member of the government House of Representatives of the Twelfth Congress of the United States who advocated waging war against Great Britain in the War of 1812. The term has evolved into an informal Americanism used to describe a political stance of preparedness for aggression, by diplomatic and ultimately military means, against others to improve the standing of their own government, country, or organization. From Wikipedia

So I guess this might construe your team to be overly aggressive. I don't know. It's up to you guys. There are plenty of Spartan teams, and we all know the Spartans were one of the most warlike people of all time.

I don't think being named the 'War Hawks' would affect award chances. I also don't think it will particularly effect a change in how other teams view you. Unless, you play overly aggressive defence, then it might work against you with people thinking stuff like, "Oh well they aren't just playing defense, they are trying to destroy our robot. Just look at their team name."

Don't worry about it. This community does not think along those lines. If they did, we would not have teams whose colors are camouflage.

The Deerfield, IL team is the Warbots (short for Warrior Robotics) and they are a great team. I would stick with it until the team decides differently.

War Hawks is cool  . If the term 'battlecry' (as in Battlecry @ WPI) can be used, with the sections of their manual labeled:

The Battleplan
The Warriors
Rules of Engagement
The Battlefield
Tactical Updates
Battle History

I dont think anyone is going to have a problem.

Re: Does our name suggest violence?

Our team (1511) is "Rolling Thunder," our logo is a Tank, and the team wears camo. It recognizes our school nickname - Patriots and our main sponsor's (Harris) military business ties. It's just all part of our image. And we were "Rookie All Stars" both regionally and at championships in 2005. Bottom line...the name itself has no impact on your reputation, its what you do as a team that counts.

Re: Does our name suggest violence?

You can be named the Rainbow Puff Unicorns and the robot is Happy Carebear, but if you act like a bunch of aggressive bullies, people will think twice about associating with you.

Warhawks, in no way, suggests a violent team in the FIRST community.

Re: Does our name suggest violence?

A name does not mean that much really, it's all about the spirit of the team. If you google the name Cybersonic you'll find a brand of tooth brush. Judges don't care about your name, its the image, spirit, and willingness to do great things that judges look for.
