2008 Boilermaker Regional
I searched and failed to find an existing thread discussing the 2008 Boilermaker Regional.
Because it was so much fun in 2007, my team will be returning to Boilermaker for a second year. The field appears to be strong once again. As of this afternoon there are still a few teams pending, so things can only get better. 931 is looking forward to another great event with our friends in Indiana. :) |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Unless we're blessed with a surprise windfall, the BMR will be the only regional the CyberCards of Team 1529 will attend. So, we're determined to make it count.
Boiler Up! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Awesome, we were hoping team 931 would get in! Maybe we can pool our resources for a single bus. We've got our work cut out for us representing MO with all of those good teams on the list.

w00t! Can't wait until BMR this year! But then again, I can't wait until Kickoff this year!
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
I have heard rumors about a certain horned animal making an appearance at BMR.
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Is 829 in for sure or are you still on the waiting list?
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
829 is registered for St. Louis, but is not on the Boilermaker list right now. There are 6 teams pending.
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Just an FYI - the BMR website is down. Purdue changed things with their servers and we are still working on getting it back up. Hopefully this will happen soon.
Thanks and sorry for any inconveinence. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
393 is looking forward to the BMR as being one of two regionals we hope to attend this year.
We missed out on it last year, but I think we plan to make it an 'every other year' kind of trip. Even though it's extremely close to us, as compared to other regionals, we still like to see different places. =P But, yea. We're looking forward to the BMR, and seeing all of you there!! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Just so everyone knows the Boilermaker Regional website is back online.
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Team 2081 is looking forward to our second year at the Boilermaker. It is so much fun!
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Team 135 is definately looking forward to there return to the Boilermaker, I think this is our 4 time? IT's a great event.
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Team 1501 is ready to play again at BMR.
This will be our 4th time there. Good luck to all. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Unfortunately, Team 1319 will not be attending Boilermaker Regional this year. We have had a great time for the past two seasons, but this year we will be attending a regional closer to home.
Good luck to all the teams attending. I'll try to watch some of the matches online if possible. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Cyber Blue 234 is attending the boilermaker regional this year.
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Warren Robotics #829 is in for BMR. I sent our registration fee in last week (January 15th) and are awaiting a confirmation from FIRST.

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Students and Adults!
If you are planning to attend the Team Social at Boilermaker, please make sure you go to our website and signup for your name badge. This is the same as we did last year - and a badge will be required to enter the Team Social facilities after dinner. (the dinner will require a ticket to get in - either pre-paid or at the door). http://purduefirst.org/boilermakerre....php?page=home Thanks! |

Boilermaker Regional Teams
Purdue FIRST Programs is working on developing media content to promote FIRST and our program around campus and to sponsors. We would like your help! Purdue FIRST will be sponsoring an elevator pitch competition to promote what FIRST means to you and your team and awarding winners at the Boilermaker Regional. What is an Elevator Pitch? An elevator pitch is a concise and well practiced description of a business venture (in this case FIRST) that you would deliver if you found yourself in an elevator with a potential sponsor. In 1-2 minutes, the pitch should describe: * The FIRST Competition * Your market and its size (Who do you reach?) * The support your team receives * Your leadership, mentors, etc. * Your competition: Why you chose FIRST instead of other activities? * What makes FIRST unique? The video should be no more than two minutes in length. Upload the video to YouTube no later than March 11th, and forward the link to PR@purduefirst.org so that we can add it to the Purdue First YouTube channel. Please include your team name and number. The top videos will receive recognition at the Boilermaker Regional on March 13-15. Thank you for your submissions we look forward to seeing them, and good luck! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Scholarships
Two new scholarship programs are now available for the Boilermaker Regional: One for the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology @ IUPUI, and another for Ivy Tech. The deadline is fast approaching for all of these! Purdue - March 1 IUPUI - March 10 Ivy Tech - March 12 Details for all scholarship programs are available here. Be sure to apply...you just might win :] Photo Gallery The Boilermaker Regional has a new photo gallery too. A few pictures from the 2007 event are up now, and we hope to have many more this year! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Teams attending BMR - don't forget if you're going to the social activities after the dinner, you must signup on our website to gain admittance. This is quick and easy to do.
Also - we have some new info on the website including scholarships and concessions info, as well as Enrichment tours that we've done in the past. We plan to use the big train (Boilermaker Special) to run campus tours. Signup will be first come first serve during the event. See ya in a week! Thanks!! http://purduefirst.org/boilermakerregional/index.php |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
I might try to make an appearence this year, stop by Brother's and Where Else?, and egg the Alpha Sig fraternity house. It depends on if I can find somewhere to stay/get off work.
|
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Some people have been asking through email already, so I'll announce it here...the regional will be webcasted, hopefully Thursday-Saturday. Check this page on Thursday to get the latest information on how to watch:
http://purduefirst.org/boilermakerre...p?page=webcast I'll also try to post lots of pictures to our photo gallery during the event. Get excited! We're less than a week away! :D P.S.: You can add an über-cool BMR userbar by placing the following in your signature: Code:

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
It's business time everybody. I wanna see everyone bringing their friends and their parents and their parents' parents and that guy you just met from down the street who is kind of cool but is kind of weird too so you're not quite sure how to invite him to a robotics competition but you do it anyway because you're just that excited for this weekend. But no pets. Not my rules, probably Purdue's... and FIRST's.
Do bring your GP though, I don't want to hear any smack talk, let's work together and get everyone to have autonomous modes that blow other regionals' autonomous modes out of the water. No one likes a stagnant robot. No one likes a stagnant crowd either. Everyone in this group should bug their team to stand and cheer like crazy the whole time Friday and Saturday. This place needs to be off the hook the entire time. It's everyone's responsibility to barely have a voice by the end of Saturday. And come stop by 1646's pit if you need any help. :) We'll do our best to help you or find someone who can. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Friday during lunch, 1529 will have a Hungry Hungry Hippos tournament in the stands. If you're interested, stop by our pit on Thursday to sign up. We'll have prizes for the top 3 players.

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Friday night in Lafayette. We're having a blast at the Boilermaker regional! (Just got back from the laundromat with fresh team shirts for tomorrow. Our hotel has no laundry facility, but it does have an advantageous location, just a few steps from Krispy Kreme.)
The Armory at Purdue University is a special kind of venue. Space is tight -- but strangely that is a good thing. The walk from the stands to the pits, or to concessions, is very short. And the views of the field are all excellent. Not too many empty seats today, and by tomorrow afternoon there won't be any at all. Props to the planning committee for another great event, and to all of the outstanding volunteers who make it happen. There are several strong teams in this field. Wildstang has only one loss, and 45/829/876 put up 100 points early in the afternoon, which was nearly topped by 292/1024/1501 in the day's last match. My team combined with 2040 and 2081 (solid hurdlers both) to lose that match 92-76, with each alliance taking 10 point in penalties. I believe that was the highest combined score here so far. Things will intensify on Saturday -- stay tuned. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Boilermaker Regional has been very exciting so far. Many matches have been close and penalties are still a big factor. 111, 292, 1024, 45, and 931 have the hurdling game down pretty well, there are others that I'm forgetting though. Everyone should keep their eyes glued to who ends up in the top spots, it's going to be a major factor on making the shutout alliance for this regional.
As far as 1646, we've been plagued with some bad luck. Mostly some very random bad battery issues and throwing a drive chain. Otherwise, our drive has been flying since we upgraded it Thursday and we've knocked down most of the balls we've attempted. |

Not sure if its the REAL player (which is garbage) or something from the sites end. Would be nice to see at least a full ten seconds of the match without the screen freezing, re buffering, or distorting. Why did they have to use Real Player format  |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
agreed.. I had nothing but problems trying to veiw the webcast today.. I wanted to see 111 and 1024 again.. but sadly.. the feed was so bad that I had no idea what was what.. hopefully its a little better tomorrow!! (today... whichever)

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
The Kokomo Tribune has some wonderful coverage of the Howard County teams competing at the Boilermaker Regional.
There is a nice article and a really neat audio / slide show. Good luck to all teams today. Andy B. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
The webcast was plenty hurting during alliance selection, but I got the alliance list:
(111,1024, 876) (481,45,1397), (292, 829,1397), (234,2081,1501), (1741,2081,1501), (2197,1985,135), (1000,447,201), (2386,2040,231) |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Okay all you webcasters... could someone PLEASE explain what the problem is/was with the Boiler Maker webcast... i.e was it a lack of bandwith, a server problem, or something with the Real Player...
And maybe someone would explain why they chose to use the Real Player format. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Mine was just horrible quality... like it was maybe 4 pixels lmao (exagrettion)
and then it cuts out all the time.. and after maybe 5 mins I get a general error from real player |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Great big high fives to teams 111, & 876 for winning the regional...
and double to 1024 for winning their second regional they have been to this year. Guess that magic smoke does have some magic in it cause it sure seems to work for them! Will Buckeye be the next to come under the spell of 1024's magic smoke? Great job to all the folks that made the BMR so exciting... maybe next year someone will figure out a better webcast system. (hint... ditch the real player format!) |

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Hol-ee crap, FIRST fans. Boilermaker was intense! Once elimination matches started picking up, everyone got fired up. Congrats to 111, 1024, and 876. You guys gave us one of our greatest matches this year, even if I was just watching/cheering from the stands. Very, very good job guys. Again, my congratulations.
Also, you guys got our alliance wrong. It was 461, 45, and 1327. Big shoutout to our alliance partners. You were great alliance partners both on and off the field, our combined sections gave 1024's army of support a run for their money. I can only think of hearing 'RED ALLIANCE' from 1024's section and screaming 'BLUE ALLIANCE!' at the top of my lungs to get our sections started. Of course, I'm hoarse now but it was totally worth it. Also, I have to give props to the 931 for their hurdle/place. It was by far one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Just incredible guys. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Congratulations to the winning alliance of 111, 1024, and 876! It was well deserved. :)
This was, once again, a fantastic competition. There were a variety of robots with an assortment of features and unique strategies. I look forward to seeing some of you in the future. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Holy Cow, that was CLOOOOSE!!!!!! :yikes: (wait, 45 said that already.)
Great job 1327,45,461. 45: Gripper go round? Still awesome. Wish you guys were going to another event... Awesome robot. (EDIT: They are going to more events. Nevermind!) 1327: I really wanted to see your guys robot go nuts and spin really fast in circles sometime this weekend (like it did at MWR) but apparently you guys fixed the problem. Ahh, well... :] 461: Nice conveyor foldy-thingy. Cool. Awesome 876 and 111! I was glad we could finally be allies rather than opponents, Wild Stang. It was a pleasure competing with you all and 876. We sure put out some exciting matches! I'm sorry I couldn't get our autonomous fixed all the way... that fire at MWR must have been worse than I thought it was... :ahh: Should have it ready for Cleveland. 1018: Thanks for your awesome Gracious Professionalism! Without your robot controller, our robot would have been in a box long before the finals. It was a pleasure to wear your hard hat! :D Thanks everyone that made this a great BMR! -q p.s. If anyone has any information about my laptop (I left it in the auditorium) please let me know! Thanks! :ahh: |

Boilermaker was great this year. I was really impressed by all the teams, especially the rookies. Big props to 2368 for being in a drafting position at the end of the Qualifying matches, that's a great opportunity for a rookie! I was also impressed by 1741's success this year. Congrats on the Motorola Quality award, and the sucker on your gripper is tight. I, as a scouter, don't usually see tons of teams using a sucking device well, but your guys' robot was great!

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Wow, what a great week. Team 2040 wants to thank everyone involved in making the Boilermaker Regional a great success. It was our first visit to the BR, and the entire team had an awesome time.
Special thanks to 2368 for choosing us as an ally, and to 931 for the amazing knockoff/place right at the end, incredible! Tough luck making it to the semifinals, only to face 111, 1024 and 876.. This was my first year with FIRST and I can say that I am foolishly looking forward to the next 6 weeks... Thanks to all involved for an incredibly exciting week! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Thanks to you wonderful Guys and Gals from Purdue for making the
Boilermaker the fabulous competition it is. You were graciously professional letting us have that all important "pit time" even though you were very very tired of a long day. Thanks also to our great alliance friends (Blue and Red) for a magnificent finish to this killer lineup of great bots. Thought you would like to know what all the craziness was at during the finals in the 1024 Robot. Well it wasn't smoke this time, it was a sudden lack of 5 Volts! If you ever looked in our robot it looks like the old Telephone switch boards of days gone by. We had only one shot and that was to pull the controller. BIG BIG THANKS TO PIKE 1018 FOR THE LOAN OF THEIR CONTROLLER. Gracious Professionalism goes on. With the sweaty palms of Mentors and Students the robot went back out in time to finish. We had quite a few 5 line autonomous thanks to all the teams running this week in autonomous themselves. It keeps traffic flowing and everyone runs up a nice score in autonomous. Makes the crowds and the teams happy. By the way remember autonomous is a very lucky event. Sort of like landing on Mars with a working robot. Everything has to work. Batteries, motors, gearboxes, encoders, gyros, cameras etc etc. If you get wind to your back you make it other wise you can watch your robot spin in circles or worse drive backwards or crash into walls. But always always try to do it. Its a lot of fun watching your robot score points for your team. Look forward to seeing our friends at Cleveland! Whew four days off and back at it again. Robot asked us for a week off, guess not. Thanks again Pike and all the teams who were there at the Incredibly Exciting BOILERMAKER 2008! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional

Your team built a solid scoring machine for 2008 -- for those at other regionals I would describe it as a pallet-loader / placekicker. Very reliable and effective hurdler. I enjoyed inspecting your robot at Boilermaker, and was thrilled when our teams were selected to join the same alliance for the eliminations. Thank you, 2368! About that one-in-a-million shot: I'm hoping that TBA will get Boilermaker video soon so others can see it. Watching the blue ball sail up, knock away the red bonus, and then settle onto the overpass as the buzzer sounded -- well, that was a moment to look back on for quite a while. Of course, we planned it just that way! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional

Also, Congratulations to teams 111, 1024, and 876! You were a great alliance! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Wow, what a regional. Congratulations to the winning alliance of 111, 1024, and 876 for beating us in the semi-finals and eventually going on to win the whole thing (by 4 points in the final match!)
This was quite an event for our team. Last year was not the greatest year for us and we hadn't been in the elimination rounds since our 2006 year, so being drafted by the number 5 seed was amazing. Thank you team 1741 and 2171 for seeing us the lap runner you wanted for your alliance. Thanks to the volunteers that made the event happen too, it was another great year at BMR. |

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
I have to say that Indiana and the Purdue folks throw a wonderful regional. I had a great time, all the teams were wonderful, the competition was fierce but everyone was friendly and gracious. Congratulations to the rookies who all brought some very good machines and great people.
The alliance of 1327, 45 and 461 were spectacular. All three teams worked so well together they were very hard to beat. Thanks to all the help we had in the finals from our alliance partners 1024 and 876 and 1018 for that rush job to get 1024 back in the game with a replacement RC. 1024 has one of the fastest machines and the best auto mode I have seen this year. 876 has a great machine and super team. I hope you all survived the long bus trip home to North Dakota safely. |

Lost and Found:
My daughter lost a large black book called "Eclipse" in the stands. Please let me know if anyone found it. Update: It was turned in to the Lost and Found! Thanks to who ever turned it in... PS> The Boilermaker Regional was great - (thanks for adding power in the practice area - we lived there most of the time). Hope to see some of you at IRI in July. |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Boilermaker was so much fun, even though we lost one of our arms almost every match... It turns out that the glue was bad, and that the PVC wasn't very strong.
I would also like to thank Team 1000 and 447 for a great alliance in the finals! I hope to see some of you at Great Lakes and Atlanta! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Boilermaker sounds like it was another exciting time this year. What an amazing roster! St. Louis was great (except for the drive), but I miss visiting Purdue this year.
Since the FIRST site still isn't listing BMR awards, can anyone provide a list? I'm specifically interested in those brave souls heading north to West Michigan to compete in two of the most exciting regionals anywhere back to back: 234 (Chairmans I know, congrats!), 1000, 2015, and 2171. Thanks in advance. To the rest of you BMR teams, come on up and watch us! I think this weekend will end up being a great show. |

Hello Mark Pierce,
234 was a great robot and headed up the 4th alliance. 1000 was a strong runner and headed up the 8th alliance. I am a team mentor with team 2171. We were chosen for the 5th ranked alliance. We had a great 3 round match against 234's alliance. We advanced and lost in the semifinals against 111, 1024, and a great team from Dakota, I believe 876. The Robodogs,Team 2171, are a second year team and are looking forward to coming up with team 71 The Beast, 234 Cyber Blue, and the 1000 Cybercats and represent Indiana well. We look forward to competing this weekend. Vince |

Thanks for all of the reports on the low webcast quality - I wouldn't blame it on Real yet...someone was apparently eating up an enormous amount of bandwidth at the event site and it seems this was a lot of the problem. This is something we will work on improving in the future.

These chunks are just under 10 minutes long to facilitate YouTube posting. For now, this is the way i'll most likely be getting them online. I'll have to come up with some sort of naming convention so you all can access them. They are not organized by match (Sorry, that would take waaaay too long to do :o ) but they will be in ~10minute chunks running in chronological order starting friday morning. The computers should be done with all the conversion work by about noon tomorrow, but I'll be in school so I won't be able to get back to them until later in the afternoon. Then, i'll load up the good ol YouTube batch uploader, and let er rip. ECU (company I work for who is graciously allowing me to use some of their computers to convert the video) has a DSL connection that's pretty quick, so, I'm guessing the upload should (hopefully) be done by around noon wednesday, depending on how cooperative YouTube is and all that. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks, q |

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Update:
The first three chunks (first half hour's worth) are uploading. It'll be a little while (hour or so) before they show up on YouTube, but here's the naming convention. When you search youtube, all the videos use the tag "BMR08", so put that in your search first. After a space, pick what video part you want to watch. There are four sections (the four discs). These are "friam", "fripm", "satam", "satpm" for friday morning, friday afternoon (aka friday disc 2), saturday morning, saturday afternoon (aka saturday disc 2). After another space, pick which of the clips you want to watch from that disc. They are two-digit, the first video for a section would be "01". For example, if I wanted to find the first video of the day for friday I would search: "BMR08 friam 01" Again, the first half hour is uploading now. Some of the first half hour is pretty pointless friday since for part of it no teams were even in the room and there is no audio, but I know that sections 2 and three from friday morning have the opening thing with the Purdue choo choo (yes, choo choo :] ) and all. Hope this all works... -q |

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
hehe! It was only two seconds left really? I was too busy looking at our robot to noticed the time, but yeah I was in completed shocked when it happened. I was screaming like "Wait, did Germo really do that? Did we really do that?" Our team was shocked. But I have to give props to our field crew (James & Steve) that was just awesome what they did!
Gald to hear everyone loved that shot. |

Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
I too have 4 or 5 dvds of boilermaker. I will put the files (4GB at a time) onto firstvideoarchive.com then I will spend the next couple days splitting them up into the individual matches. Between work and other projects probably done by Thursday.

On the videos, they will continue to appear on youtube on my channel throughout the night. There's about two hours or so of video in que at work, not sure how long it will take for them all to upload. I'll put more in the upload que after theyre done tomorrow afternoon (or this afternoon, whatever). Enjoy, q p.s. Thanks for the photos Ryan! EDIT: 17 videos are now online. I think we may have had a power outage at work so for now the upload process is stalled. I may not have them all online before I leave for cleveland, but I'll see what I can do. |

It appears that soap has all the videos up now..
http://www.soap.circuitrunners.com/2008/movies/in/ Thanks to Team 108 for getting the videos up! |
Re: 2008 Boilermaker Regional
Well, since I already went through the trouble to rip them, I'm going to go ahead and upload all of the tapes anyhow, just in case anyone wants to see things not in the matches necessarily.
Thanks 108, q |
