Could you provide some more information please? I guess I don't understand what you are talking about.

People who are applying / are accepted at RPI. I'm applying, haven't sent mine in yet though.

Haha, I should've elaborated a bit. Yesterday was ED Round 1 notification for Rensselaer, and this thread is for everyone who plans to attend the 'Tute.

Re: RPI Class of 2012

I'll be here but not class of 2012.

For any one who isn't clear RPI is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Recently the administration has been pushing to move away from RPI as a nickname and towards Rensselaer instead. The 'Tute is an older nickname that is often used by hockey columnists.

I have my application in, but probably won't know if I'm going till mid febuary or whenever the acceptance letters come out.

Re: RPI Class of 2012

I'm currently a sophomore at RPI, same class that James is in. Taking a major in Mechanical Engineering with dual concentrations in design and manufacturing. RPI is the place to be for engineering, amazing facilities, professors are top in their fields, and the largest and most prestigious engineering companies come to recruit from here. However, getting an engineering degree from this school requires a huge amount of work. The classes I have taken here were some of the hardest I have ever taken in my life. Overall though, RPI is a lot of fun to be at, and I've had a great time for the last 1.5 years. If you guys want to know more about RPI, go ahead and pm me.

Do people call it "The 'Tute"? I have never heard that, and it seems very non-specific. Just curious...

Greg,

Yes RPI has been called many things and internally we used to have a saying being "Tute screwed" after an exam.

All in all it's agreat school and it even has new improved facilities since I was there. I'm a MechE grad in 1996 and the re-founding Father of the Chi Phi Fraternity on the corner of Sage and 15th St. Directly across from the Student Union.

Just a comparison though RPI Engineering is highly Theory based and great for deep thinkers and teachin all the proper principles. I'm in the masters of Product Development at RIT currently and RIT is more applications based.

Either way there's alot of great schools on the east coast.

Happy Holidays All!

Re: RPI Class of 2012

Well I googled RPI and FRC and this is the thread that popped up. Although you already know I am also in Class of 2012 and I think I will be dual majoring in Biochemistry/Biophysics and Chemistry.

Re: RPI Class of 2012

So I googled FRC and RPI again and I found this thread once again. I know there are a bunch of FIRST people in our grade so we should do some collaboration or something. I was looking for what RPI did in terms of FRC because I know that there is a scholarship and we support some team somewhere. I guess ill keep looking.

RPI works with Team 20 and possibly Team 250 as well in the capital region.

Re: RPI Class of 2012

Yeah. I did some more research afterwards and it seems that RPI students also work with Team 1665 and Team 1493. I am currently emailing a bunch of people to find out more. Thank you.

I got an email when I enrolled at RPI about FRC at RPI. When I emailed them in the fall, they said there was going to be a meeting after spring registration. Since then, I have heard nothing.

Re: RPI Class of 2012

Yeah I emailed the contact from the RPI site about FRC and he gave me the email of another person. He said that basically its an Intro to Engineering Design class (a 15 person 2000 level class) taught by one teacher that goes to help out with a team but it was only one team. Are you a freshman?

That's amusing. (: I hope there aren't any schools that abbreviate their name RIP...

Re: RPI Class of 2012

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted on here in a while.

There are 4 teams sponsored by RPI, 20, 250, 1493, and 1665.

As far as I know there are no RPI students working with 20 and 250.

1493 works down stairs in the CII (In the AML), if you are interested in working with a team this is the easiest. Larry Ruff is the guy to contact. The team works with IED Section 1.

This year myself and one other student will be working with 1665, they work about 35min off campus so transportation can be an issue.

If you need any more info let me know.

Re: RPI Class of 2012

Hmm well I am not sure if I want to mentor but one thing I do know is that 1665 is going to the same regionals my home team is going so it would be cool to help out there. I have emailed Larry about the other team though. Who should I contact for 1665?

EDIT

Larry's response is as follows for anyone interested:
"We will be meeting Monday at 7PM in CII4050. Come a little early to meet with me."

That would be for mentoring 1493.

actually, there are 2 RPI students working with team 20 (both alumni of the team). We hope to get some more in future years.
