Crazy Hair
I'm going all out for this years regional.... :)
I want an all white head with the FIRST logo on the back! :yikes: I found this about going all white: Going White but I believe i'll have a big problem doing the logo.. does anyone have any experience with doing something like this? How do you keep the color in an area? a template? thanks for the help! I promise to post pics! -Leav |

Re: Crazy Hair
I have spent a lot of time colouring my hair. I have found it very difficult to put patterns on my hair. My hair is not short. I think that the shorter the hair, the easier to do. All my colourings are done now with spray colours as it is easier to blend.

One time, for our team we had black dye and then turquoise 4 designs on the back of heads. Simple shapes that are bold are easy to stencil and spray hair dye stuff are easiest to use and blend like Steve said. edit: For that, the shorter the hair, the easier it is to spray a design on, because with longer lengths, the hair will move out of place, later distorting the design. |
Re: Crazy Hair
I've seen people put some kind of paint in their (long) hair, that keeps the back stiff like a large flat sheet. Then any design can be painted on top of the base color.
I don't remember where I saw it, sorry. Jacob |
Re: Crazy Hair
Leav,
If your hair is like it shows in your WAI, you could shave the symbols into the back and color your hair. It wouldn't take long for the hair to grow back. I've seen that done. |
Re: Crazy Hair
If you want to have a brilliant rich hair experience don't do the spray on stuff or do it at home. Get a professional salon to do it and you can get this result.

For my bright Orange Hair in 2006 & 2007 I bleached my hair (almost to an extent of being white) (Me on the right : http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/24904 ) & then added some great spray on color stuff called: "Streaks & Tips Temporary Highlight Spray Color - Neon Orange." I found it at a Beauty Supply store one of my other team mates bought some hair glue at and it works wonders... It washes right out with water and shampoo at the end of the day which is a plus for going back to work or school after competitions as well. lol And don't be fooled by the stuff they sell at halloween to color your hair. It's ok, but it's not as bright as this stuff. This is the brightest orange coloring I have found so far. This was the result: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/24815 (Me on the far right again) I have a better picture showing the ultra brightness of the coloring I'll have to link later. I can't access facebook to get to my pics from work. :( As far as a template, I know in the past I had my hair stylist cut some lightning bolts in my head, but I never thought of coloring it in. (I was like 10 at the time. lol) If you can get in touch with a person who cuts hair regularly, or as a hobby, they may have some more suggestions. (I'm lucky as my Mom who went to hairdressing school at one time in her life is my consultant nowadays. lol I can do some crazy stuff & get some awesome ideas from her.) And, one more thing. The bleach @ home kit isn't that hard. They basically give you bleach powder & you add some water. Then you literally paint the bleach on your hair with a paint brish they give you as well. It does sting your scalp though if you go that far down. :ahh: I didn't know that the first time I did it. |
Re: Crazy Hair
yeah that is basically what the pro's do. Most people I've seen at the events don't go to all that bother.

Re: Crazy Hair
342 made a bet with the judges and the judges lost. We asked a couple safety judges to dye their hair. One jokingly said, " Do you have information about the chemicals in the dye?" So our safety captain sent all night in her hotel room writing a MSDS for every chemical in the hair dye. She even drafted some of the local chemical engineering students to help. The next day the judges had no choice.:D

so now I think I have two main options:
the first option would look cooler if it was accomplished successfully I think, but it would be easier to mess up... the second option would be easier to dye (and cheaper...), but wouldnt have the same effect I think... I'll have to do a photoshop and see what either choice looks like... Thanks for the help guys... i'll post the photoshop here when i'm done and you can help me decide.. :) -Leav |

after playing around in photoshop I realized that doing an all white head might be cool, but it won't work with a first logo....
(because the circle is white in the logo) right now i'm thinking my best bet would be to have my hair at about 1cm (~0.4") and then cut everything away except the first logo and then dye that with a brush.... it would take some fancy shaving but I'll get it done... :) here's a pic of the photoshopping... (and Adobe said you couldn't use that as a verb.... hah!) Thanks for the help and I promise pics.... (and a new WAI probably :) ) -Leav |

I am not a believer in long term hair colour. I change my colour and style daily at events to match my shirts. I have attached 2 photos to show that spray can be colourful. I have almost black hair. I do a base coat of white then let my imagination go wild. Paul C has referred to me as a peacock on steroids.

after seeing this I will definitely go with spray! (because it would be easier to create a template and spray on that. so I have a new algorithm now:
Steve, i'm guessing I should go with name brands on this one (I would imagine cheapo spray wouldnt get the vivid color you got...) right? also, in the second picture, what's the name of the guy on the right? is that Blair? (he MCs here at Israel every year! he's an awesome MC!) -Leav |

Note: once you start colouring your hair it becomes a trade mark for you and eventually no one will know you if your hair is not colored. It is an expensive trend to keep up. Yes that is Blair. Not only is he a great MC is is the best announcer in FIRST. He taught me all I know and my bad traits do not come from him, I learned them myself. |

The longer it goes, the firmer it gets. I have gone to bed and when I awake, the same shape. Kids love to touch and pull and my hair goes nowhere. At the end of the day, less than 2 minutes in a hot shower and I am back to normal (no comments please). |

I'm going to predict right now that in 2008 we're going to see a lot of Steve W style hairdo clones. lol |
Re: Crazy Hair
Hair driers speed up the process. Just for those who like to get up early, it takes me anywhere from 45-75 minutes to do my hair depending on style and complexity.

I spend about 3 hours doing the bleach job on my hair, and then about 10 minutes (if that) putting in the spray on color on a now white/light yellow base. I guess it shows when you see the detail in your hair style, as opposed to a one color spray job, but I guess they both get the same result when walking around an event. Everyone looks at you like you're a little strange for doing it. lol But meh, no one has the right to judge you for having spirit or dedication. Unless it's the fact that you DO have those, and you're about to win a Team Spirit award. |
Re: Crazy Hair
I was at my hairdresser's on Saturday and next to me was a guy who was getting the little triangle piece under his lower lip dyed a strawberry color. He was clean shaven except for that area. (Does it have a name, like a half goatee or something?) His hair was blond.
That little show of color rocked. |

I think this should be a section of the manual next year, or at least in the MC & Announcer's handbook. ;) Where is Kathie? I think NEMO should write something about this as well. And maybe someone should present this at a Seminar during the Championship Event that we keep getting e-mails about. Steve... You're not going to be busy on the field during The Championship Event are you? I think you could host that seminar very easily. :] In the meantime I'm going to be waiting for the E-Mail blast and/or Team Update from FIRST that has these tips we've mentioned in it. :D |
Re: Crazy Hair
I couldn't edit my older post where I was talking about the spray stuff I use, so here it is here:
![]() And here it is in action. This pic was actually from later in the year (Halloween night to be exact) when my hair was a lot darker, so it didn't have the white hair as a base coat. You can see how bright the spray really is for it to show up this bright of an Orange with dark hair: ![]() |

My son used to bleach his hair and then use a theatrical make-up permanent hair-color for his green hair. Because the regionals would always be in March, some folks just assumed it was for St. Patricks Day. Not being a school based team also had misunderstandings. The principal of his school thought he was going through a "phase" each year, even though she had to approve his permission slip from the team, and after each season he would bring in this large green robot, to demonstrate it for the school, while he wore his bright green MOE jersey. It was only after he graduated that she finally put the whole picture together. Since prom came very shortly after the Championships, it was interesting to see how much his hair woud grow out before that event. |
Re: Crazy Hair
A nice tip for the girls, since the only ones posting are boys (y'all have cooties, by the way):
oops, except for michelle, nica, and jane. -If you're going to spray your hair, pull it back somehow. What I've found works is your basic high pony with color spray from your local beauty supply store. You can do stripes, spots, or just color the whole thing! Go nuts! -If you're really REALLY dedicated and want to do something permanent, but don't want to ruin your gorgeous locks because even though you're an engineer in training, you still have that smidge of femininity... ..try dying the tips of your hair. This can be done easily with a friend's help, and can always be cut off at the end of the event/season/whatever you choose. With 1923's colors being silver and black, I hope to have black tips for NJ regional. That is, if my parents don't come after me with hedge clippers when they see it...:ahh: |

An atrocity has been commited!!! They stopped selling Neon Orange Streaks 'N Tips!!!!!!!!!!!! It's discontinued!!!!!!!!! :ahh: :ahh: If anyone knows a place to get this stuff in Orange, or an alternative spray type hair color that would work just as well, please let me know ASAP!!!! I NEED ORANGE SPRAY DEPERATELY!!!! :( Steve W, what do you use?????? And where can I get some in Orange??? |
Re: Crazy Hair
I am in the process of finding new products. I bought 3 cans of orange to have some spare. I can check if they have some but warn you it's $15.00 per can.

That's a little much.. Oh wait.. Canadian/American exchange rate ftw!!! It should only be like 50 cents in America right?? :p j/k Anyways.. I actually have left over cans of Orange from last year I'm going to be using for this weekend, but they discontinued the Orange which really grinds my gears! :-/ Now I have to find a supplier of some good brand of Orange (relatively cheap ie: Under 5 bucks a can) for Atlanta!! I've already checked Ebay & found a good one. (maybe) I'm gonna order one can tonight, and see how good it is if it gets here in time for Philadelphia hopefully, and then maybe order some more for Atlanta. |

Thanks, I needed that. Payback is sweet though. I guess that I will have to engineer another "Canadian Customs" plan. ;)

Re: Crazy Hair
My FTC team is trying to convince me to dye my hair for Atlanta and a friend who does "theater tech" for a living suggested going to a Beauty Supply place and buying "semi-permanent" hair dye. Allegedly I'll be able to dye it before we leave and it will stay colored while we are there and I'll just have to wash it a bunch afterward to get the color out.

Re: Crazy Hair
I have two ways that I get my hair coloring supplies
Recently I've been bleaching my hair before regionals (that way the colors are more vibrant) Then If I'm announcing I buy a plethora of colors, but if I'm with my team I only need one. The best brand I've found is http://www.jeromerussell.com/528514.html That is pretty good, but the color selection is somewhat limited. However, I found this website http://store.hello-gorgeous.net/tehacosp.html Their selection is better, but I found the color to not be as vibrant. That's my .02 for color, now I just need to find something that will keep my hair in place all day, normally it starts to flatten out by days end. |
Re: Crazy Hair
I have been trying the Jerome Russell products also. The team colors and punky work well with a white base applied first. There are some others but I find that the white base is essential for vibrant colors.
For styling I use ICE products. I start with the Spiker Gel and after all color applied I use the Spray Adhesive. When dry a torado won't knock it down. Link is http://www.joico.com/product/detail.php?CatID=6 Note: Why does it seem that is mostly guys talking about these beauty products and how did we come to know so much??????? |
