WALL•E

I was visiting some folks at Pixar last week (yeah, it is just as cool as you might imagine - about the closest thing to nirvana that there is for an animator), and heard a little more about their new film coming out next summer. I have been a huge fan of John Lasseter's work since I first saw "Andre and Wally B" from the 1984 Siggraph, and Luxo Jr. soon thereafter. Wandering through the halls at Pixar and seeing some of their latest work (like the original artwork from Ratatouille) was a real thrill - and the cereal bar was amazing!

Anyway, the new film is "WALL•E" and it looks like it is going to be a lot of fun - and it is about ROBOTS!!! If you have not seen it yet, Pixar has released the second movie trailer (the first one has been out since mid-summer). There is a streaming version of the WALL•E trailer on Slashfilm and another copy on Yahoo Movies

I can't wait!

WALL•E Looks to be a very cool movie.
I know Koko Ed has mentioned it many times here on CD and I know I'll be in line to see it when it opens for sure next June.

Side Note: Dave... Visiting Pixar? Getting some help on the game animation this year maybe? Does this mean you won't be using your WHOLE Christmas break working on it this year? But isn't that part of a tradition by now for you? :ahh:

Dave talking about Pixar this time of year? It can only mean one thing: there will be a Pizza Planet truck somewhere in this year's animation.

Hmm, dave just posted. Another game clue perhaps? Let's tear apart every word of it... :D Just kidding, sounds cool. Even better than a Pixar game animation would be if they featured FIRST-built robots in this new movie!

Or maybe Dave's just trying to sneak the small Blue Robot into the movie...

It deserves something worthwhile; that poor robot gets the short end of the stick in every game animation.

If the championships were still at Disney I would bet a seasons worth of entry fees that Disney would have a Wall-E replica making rounds at the event and maybe even going as far as participating in matches.
Never underestimate the Disney advertising machine. You need to look no further than the amazing popularity of Miley Cyrus to see that.

No. A national FIRST showing!!! Like what those big hams in Hollywood do with other, less entertaining flicks that you watch on TVGuide and E! except this will be better. OR at least organize it in regions then schedule them at the same date and time.

Maybe he was arranging a Guerilla Drive-In preivew of WALL•E for the Wrap Party in Atlanta!

Re: WALL•E

I saw the pre-release screening of WALL•E last night, and it turned out to be just as much fun as I suspected it would. First off, it is a good story, without being sickeningly sweet. The story is engrossing enough that you are completely pulled into it. You are twenty minutes into the film before you realize that there has not been a single line of dialog - and yet the story and cinematography are good enough to carry that off without a problem.. And WALL•E is terminally cute (yes, I am already trying to figure out how to make one out of VEX parts...). As expected, the quality of the animation is stunning, although I will admit to being much more impressed by the scenes on Earth than on the spacecraft. The animators in the audience are going to just love it. Without giving away any of the story line, there are some fun things to look out for. You will catch a few subtle reminders that Pixar is still partially owned by Steve Jobs (just listen to WALL•E's reboot sound, etc.). I am still looking for the "Binford" tag that is hidden in there somewhere.

The special short up front, "Presto" by Doug Sweetland, is as good as we have come to expect from Pixar (probably my favorite since "For The Birds" led off "Monsters Inc.").

There is also a nice connection between this film and the FIRST community. Those of us that have been around long enough may remember Laura London (first at Autodesk, and later with FIRST). Her nephew, Brian London, is an assistant art director on the film.

No offense intended to the builders of that little model, but it isn't even close. You may have to wait until you see the movie to appreciate it, but when you see the level of complexity that the designers put into the WALL•E model you will understand that building a physical representation of this creation is NOT going to be easy. I need to go back and look at the motions more closely, but I believe that I counted at least 42 discrete controlled degrees of freedom in the design, not including the passive motions (and if that number proves to be correct, I am tempted to think that it probably is not an accident; perhaps a nod to Douglas Adams?).

I called our local cinema a few weeks back to inquire about renting a cinema for a private showing for FIRSTers (we could only get it NEXT weekend, at 10am or something... :( ) and also asked if he'd like me to arrange for some real robot demonstrations on opening day. He replied something about needing Disney approval, etc. and he just didn't "get it" that a bunch of teenagers and adults have been waiting for this movie to come out for months!

So... if you're planning on going to see the movie please wear something with FIRST on it - I used to have buttons that said "Ask Me About FIRST Robotics" - and be prepared with your "elevator speech" in case someone asks you about FIRST!

hm, we've arranged for a demo outside one of the theaters with our robot(s). I think it will be a great deal of fun for everyone. Children will 'get it' and so will some, hopefully many - adults. Well, maybe the ones who are kids at heart... I think we may know a few of those. *cough*

Wowsers! That animatronic WALL•E is amazing! I don't know how the actual robots scales to people in the actual film, but it was a bit larger than I was expecting. But other than that, Imagineers have the greatest job on the planet. That thing is amazing. IFI's is cutesy, and pretty nifty, but as Dave says, absolutely pails in comparison to that thing.

And, I'm also really looking forward to this movie. :p

Team 1089 Mercury is also doing a presentation and perhaps a demo inside our local theater.

We are supposed to have table, and, are putting up a display board, handing out brochures about our team and what F.I.R.S.T. is about.

We also plan on having this years robot on display, with perhaps some form a demo, perhaps letting some the kids drive it a little or some such. And we'll be giving out "Future 1089 Member" buttons to the children along with some of the other buttons we have left.

Of course we'll be there to explain, teach, enlighten, and excite anyone who's interested as well as promoting the values, goals and ideals of F.I.R.S.T.

We too missed out on IRON Man and Transformers. Even though those movies were for an older crowd. We are hoping to inspire the new, younger and future ones here at this opportunity.

Just came back from seeing the movie. It was VERY well done. The first 20 minutes is probably the best 20 minutes of any animated movie in history. It's a beautiful, well crafted movie that never loses its heart even when its commentary on the future human "evolution" is rather harsh and biting.
This movie gets an "A" from me.

Yeah. My suspicions about EVE were correct :).

EVE scans the Pizza Planet truck (in a pile of trash) shortly after arriving to earth.

No sign of Dinico.

Someone needs to claim their team is sponsored by B&L. How funny would that be? Put, like, Buy n' Large stickers all over the robot :D lol

Found the truck, also notice that the mosaic turtles resemble the turtles pattern from Finding Nemo.

The movie was really good, I saw it on a DLP screen that made it even better, I would recommend seeing it on one of those.

I saw it for FREE :). Phoenix Theatres hosted a robot parade in both Monroe and Farmington Hills for local teams. We showed off our robots to the media and a local tv station and one team (862 I think, sorry if I'm wrong) converted their VEX robot to a copy of Wall-E and it looked pretty convincing.

Thanks to the theatres for supporting FIRST and of course for a free movie. It was a great time and worth the 45 minute drive (so not quite free with $4+ per gallon)

I need to go back and look at the motions more closely, but I believe that I counted at least 42 discrete controlled degrees of freedom in the design, not including the passive motions (and if that number proves to be correct, I am tempted to think that it probably is not an accident; perhaps a nod to Douglas Adams?).

I bet at least one FIRST team will make a fully functiong Wall E for a demo bot that'll knock people's socks off.
What would impress me is if anyone can make a good EVE replica (san dangerous laser cannon. Though she would make an interesting Battlebot). The flying would be cool enough but how would you pull off the free floating head?

It is still sinking in... but I think that this is my favorite animated movie ever.

My 3 girls and I saw it Saturday night. They didn't know they were going to see it until Mary dropped us off in front of the movie.

Simply put, it is an outstanding moving on many levels. However, it is better when you can take a kid (or 3) and watch it along with them. Do yourself (and others) a favor by taking a child with you to see it.

As a parent, one of the most rewarding things we get to do is watch our kids discover the world and become inspired. This movie allows that opportunity.

wow.

We've already decided that we're going to use the wall.e approach to building robots from now on...lots of joints, no actuators :)

WALL•E was AMAZING! OMG! :D :D
I had to go see it twice. So far I've spent 27 bucks on the WALL•E franchise by taking my brother & sister to a matinee, & then going with a bunch of friends later the same night, and I'm sure I'll spend plenty more when the movie comes out to DVD, & on some cool toys from the movie as well if I find any. lol

Couple of things I picked up I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Apple start-up sounds from WALL•E.
iPod Video (in his room the first time he pops in Hello Dolly)

Sometimes WALL•E kinda looked like E.T. in the shadows & when he was on the shuttle on his was to the Axiom, I heard a hint of what sounded like the E.T. theme.
Don't know if that was intentional, but thought it was kinda cool none-the-less.

I missed the Pizza Planet truck. :(
I noticed the turtles as well at the end though, but didn't get the Nemo connection. I guess. ::shrugs:

Also, I'm curious as to what the Theme Park folks were doing in the credits.
WALL•E the ride some day?
That would be cool.

And, last but certainly not least, dare I say this movie is Pixar's first Romantic Comedy?

Also, the cartoon at the beginning was great! Alec Azam! LOL Loved that little rabbit! :)

Magnets. Kinda like the free floating pens. It COULD work if you did it right.

I've got two more showings planned this week. :D

I've never been this excited about a movie. Transformers came close, but I wasn't as determined to see it additional times.

Yes, kids can be enjoyable to watch movies with. However, please don't bring them to the 9pm showing. At that point, they turn into a whole 'nother kid. Believe me, parents will bring kids that late. I usually go then, and I always see one.

Another thing to catch:

Wall-e was "voiced" by the famous Ben Burtt (The guy who did R2-D2). Didn't he sound familiar? ;)

Anyone catch a "Wilhelm Scream" in Wall-e? Burtt is famous for hiding these in most of the movies he does sound effects for.

I dind't recognize the name, but did notice the second time I watched it that he also did the voice of the little cleaning bot named M-O (Moe) with the brush that was obsessed with cleaning the "foreign contaminants".

My favorite scene was when Wall E was trying to keep the rain off of Eve, with an umbrella, and he kept getting hit by lightning

Haha that part is so good! The umbrella gets struck by lightning, it's reduced to just the wire frame and he closes the umbrella anyway. xDDD

Agreed! I took my grandson to see it last night. (I'm not sure which of us was more anxiously awaiting this movie). We both loved the movie and Pixar's "Presto" short film was almost worth the price of admission by itself.

[Caution: ity-bity spoiler ahead]
Now that I've had a chance to digest it, one of the things that really strikes me is how Andrew Stanton was able to convey so much with "silent" dialog. Virtually all of the communication between the characters (and with the audience) is non-verbal. For now my favorite part is where WALL*E and EVE are getting to know each other and begin their relationship during her increasingly-frustrated search on Earth.

I'm looking forward to finding an excuse to see it again soon.

There is no better excuse than simply going because you want to.
Pixar movie transcend their genre and rating and no adult should ever feel they have to apologize for going to see it without kids. Their movies are that good.

Besides, all the FIRSTers that I know - are children at heart. :)

Disney and Pixar are really good at making movies that appeal to both adults and children.

I could have actually stopped right after "movies". :p

What I really like about this movie is how strong the messages are. One hits you like a brick, but I didn't notice another one until I was closer to the end of my second time seeing it.

That movie......I am at a lost of words for how great it was. Pixar well never disappoint me, I want to see it as many times as my pocket would let me.

I have heard that, to get a good feel for making great movies, watch/make them without using dialog first. You would then get used to using the best camera angles and music for each scene...and I have to agree, Wall*E is a perfect example of no dialog movie(Oh yeah, there is some dialog).

Got back about a while ago from seeing WALL•E for the first time.

It will take a while to think about and I would like to see it a 2nd time soon.

I like the human beings. It was a big surprise to see that WALL•E could make eyebrows. Those were awesome.

Very true. It's hard for my family to find good movies- my younger sister is 10 grades younger than me- but my whole family enjoyed it, from my grandparents to my 4-year-old cousin.

Just got back from seeing it with my little cousins (no younger siblings for me) and it was ok. Good message and great animation. The characters are well presented but overall I'd say 7/10.

That is so cool though, go out and display your robots there right next to him hehe

For those of you looking for realistic Wall-E toys, a "mere" $189 (edit - $249.99 now - ah capitalism) buys you this little guy later this year.

He's so cute, ignoring his owner's commands is almost like a "feature". :)

It would be great if he can compact your garbage for you into neat little cubes and then take it out to the curb for you.

Why buy, when we can build :) I see enough leftover parts in our shop to build the basic chassis....Now all I need are some binoculars and tank tracks!

Re: WALL•E

Team 1675 had an opportunity to demo at a local theater on Friday night and Saturday night of opening weekend. We had the FRC robot on display only, but had a couple of smaller Vex bot, including a Wall-E lookalike, for kids to drive. We had an excellent turnout both days and had several people interested in joining local Vex leagues and wondering where they can get Vex kits for Christmas =)

I've seen Wall-E twice now and I cried both times (what can I say, I'm a sucker for robot love), but as an animator, this move is beyond amazing. I've read about how they tried to mimic old sci-fi films and certain camera techniques - they actually rewrote their animating software just for this movie to achieve the perspectives and focuses...it really is a treat. I think the thing I love most about the move, though, is how overly complex everything is (a nice commentary on the flaws of the future...and present to some degree) - pay attention to how many robots are required to activate EVE. Someone forgot about KISS in the future.

I was laughing when EVE was being activated....I noticed that too! Although I think "technology designed by artists" has that problem more than "technology designed by engineers". In other words, it's a movie thing.

Quite possibly a 'girl' thing. The artists/animators offered many tongue-in-cheek moments such as Eve being high-maintenance.
