I sure hope you aren’t expecting to machine that out of a solid block. :ahh: If you can find a piece of boxed aluminum the right size it shouldn't be that hard though.

Re: pic: AM Supershifter mount / cntr axle saddle rev 3
Is this going to be milled on a conventional milling machine? Or will it be fabricated via another method? (I'm assuming that it's going to be milled, due to the lack of bend radaii on the edges that would be there if fabricated from sheet metal (via laserjet, waterjet, or turret/punch) and then bent up.)
If it is going to be fabricated via a conventional [CNC] milling machine, then why make it such an odd shape when you can make it more "squareish" to make it easier (and faster) to mill? (E.g. leave the entire face-mounting side square, and mill two pockets in it (one to the side of the axle, one underneath). :) |
Re: pic: AM Supershifter mount / cntr axle saddle rev 3
Version 1 was very much a square block. It came in pretty heavy so I then reworked the design to reduce weight. I am now considering a design to make this a two piece - bolt together component for ease of milling. In fact, I realized that I don't need the bearing on the transmission side of things as the shaft is supported by the exact same bearing coming out of the AM transmission. I am also considering not bolting to all four through bolts on the transmission. Anybody have any thoughts as to the strength of just bolting to the AM supershifter with just two bolts:confused:
This will take me a few days to design as I have to get back to my duties of designing a new closet for the bedroom. (Cut the lumber yesterday) Need to finish before FIRST season or else:) |

Oh man. The possibility of one of our newest sponsors having fun with that piece & making it out of bent sheetmetal kinda excites me... :D
Maybe we'll borrow your design this year, who knows? :) |

Although this idea sounds a bit far fetched, the layout seems to make a lot more sense than Copley Square in Boston

Re: pic: AM Supershifter mount / cntr axle saddle rev 3
I think you may see some binding trouble on the shaft if you try to make it pass through a third or fourth bearing once it's left the AM SuperShifter. Because you're bolting the transmission directly to this, there's no room for misalignment, so keep that in mind.
