I didn't think suction would work on these balls since its fabric.

We had considered using suction last year for Rack 'n' Roll, but had decided against it, so we figured we'd give it a try this year.

We came up with another idea today, so we're working on our second robot. It's a bit more complicated, so it may take a few days this time, but we'll post a picture when we're done.

Once we have both robots finished, we're going to test them against one another to see which one performs the best.

Me too. I think it would take a 120lb vacuum pump just to make this work at all. That and the fact the ball is covered in fabric and when inflated to the full 40 inches the fabric is still loose!

EricH 06-01-2008 16:34

Re: Team 1124's new robot

Har, har. Is that a set of robot ramps I see on the robot? The only teams done by now are Beatty and Wildstang.:D:D

Ben_pharteen 06-01-2008 16:39

Re: Team 1124's new robot

The part that looks like a ramp is for herding the ball and picking it up so the vacuum device can pick up the ball. There's a slight problem, because the vacuum is so powerful it lifts our ramp lifter up, so we're going to need some tweaking before we get it right... but we still have six weeks for that.:)

We start reading the manual as soon as it is released; we have a team who starts picking out important rules and letting everyone designing the robot know about them.

We actually had the vacuum holding to ball (for real)... we will get a video of that if you really want to see it (=

Well, we overinflated a little bit, and the fabric is nowhere near loose on our trackball.

What vacuum in the KOP? I couldn't find one, and I did the inventory. It's not on the list either

Besides, I can generate a vacuum with nothing but the compressor, a solenoid, some storage tanks and two cylinders.

And I second the call of fake.

Uberbots 06-01-2008 18:53

The rules say we can generate a vacuum with any FIRST-compatible motor.

Drawings for suction design/reservoir? Even just an explanation of the basic premise?

I just can't see the KoP compressor providing enough air movement to create a vacuum with that much volume.

PLEASE, Prove me wrong!

You dont need to use the compressor... you can use a super-CIM if you like, and then hook it up to a commercial vacuum.

It is possible to change your team name in general (we were once the Cheetahs, under a different main sponsor), but the program information was due back in December, so you can't officially change the name for the 2008 season.

Hi everyone

Yep, the picture was photoshopped as Billy said earlier.

Here are the two pictures that I combined to make it work:

Either most of you guys knew that it was photoshopped already, or I'm just that good at photoshop!

Hey, that DOES fit in the box... it's just not legal since most of the robot was from 2007, and the vacuum part isn't really attached to it.

Speaking of size, we always cut it close, so we've decided to make our chassis smaller this year.

They're the craziest teams out there, basically. Anybody got actual numbers for a record time of a bot (aside from one day that is, I mean a good bot).

ot:

On the subject of one-day-'bots, 675's built one. Except it was the day before ship, made from whatever we could scrounge up and built in a few hours. The downside? Well, it didn't work. I think it disintegrated, actually. I'll have to check with weaver though, I wasn't on the team at the time.

I remember at the Championship Event last year, there was one team who arrived to discover that their bot had accidentally been shipped home instead of to Atlanta. They joined forces with some teams from neighboring pits and built a brand-new robot which they used to compete- and it actually worked pretty well, too. I still can't believe they managed to do that- talk about some serious teamwork!

The 2007 robot (the one that was altered in the picture) definitely would NOT be able to stand up to flying trackballs.

The robot we're actually working on for 2008 should be pretty robust.

Thanks... on behalf of Erik. It's funny, because I watched him do it, and to me the part of the picture that looked photoshopped was the trackball attachment to the vacuum... and I KNEW that was real because I was there when they took the picture. It's just so round and shiny, it looks unreal.

smurfgirl 07-01-2008 22:11

Re: Team 1124's new robot

So since a vacuum doesn't seem to be the way to go... what are other teams thinking for lifting the trackball? A "gripper", a "ramp", a "forklift" type device?

That was a good year.

If only we could go back to those days... just rebuild that robot.

Actually, at our meeting tonight our head mentor took out last year's robot and used the arm and the wrist as a giant claw to pick up the trackball, and started brainstorming ideas of how to use the concept of last year's robot to accomplish this year's task. Unfortunately, we need completely new ideas.
