Re: Silly and ridiculous robot designs.

for the tetras...
positively charge the tetras, and negatively charge the arm

for aim high

positively charge the balls, negatively charge the robot...

for rack n roll...

positively charge the tubes, negative charge the robot...

for overdrive...

positively charge the track ball, negatively charge the ground.

i dont get it, is it such a bad idea?

In 2007 a few people came up with the idea of making a MonkeyBot able to climb the rack to put the tubes on the top spider. We decided it wouldn't be worth the penalties.

Re: Silly and ridiculous robot designs.

Hmm... This year a gigantic spear that could impale the ball and carry it around with it touching the ground. Alternatively, a hot air balloon with a claw on the bottom, a Trebuchet, a ballista and a freshman in a box.

It involved a claw that could pick up the ball, and set it on top of the flat part of the arm, on a platform attached to a bungee. Then a pneumatic would lift the platform up to 45 degrees and that would put tension in the bungee. Then we release a catch and the bungee makes the ball go flying.

At some point in his presentation, I say "So it's basically a giant crossbow, right?"

Funny stuff.

that was MY design, basically a huge crossbow that tensioned bungees with a pneumatic (or 2) that flung the balls across the field. but that was before i actually picked one of the suckers up .....

Ha ha, I guess our's isn't the silyest, but one of our members wanted to make a pickle launcher to knock the trackball down, alas it was against the rules (projectiles and leaving things on the field)

Re: Silly and ridiculous robot designs.

Our first impressions were to use 2 kitchen woks as "monkey clappers" to clasp the ball from the sides.

Our next idea was to use the inflated 2007 pool tubes to soften the bounces of a ball. Actually, there's still a spot for the tube on our bot, so I won't rule it out yet.

We also want to incorporate the 2006 poof ball somehow. Maybe it'll be the "driver's seat" for the decorative crash dummy driver we're probably putting in the middle of the bot.

One kid decided we needed rockets to make our robot fly:rolleyes: . Oh and heres one our coach.:D

When ever 145 got went over clues and people said "A WATER GAMES!!!!". My best friend always said, WE NEED TOASTER BOT. In his mind, we would plug in Toaster Bot and drive it into the water. I think you can see where it would go from there.

A nine-sided 3-wheeled coaxial swerve drive geared at 30 fps. Silly & Ridiculous, for sure. ;)

Yeah, that's ridiculous.

Don't worry, no one would be crazy enough to build it. The only crazier team would be the team silly enough to pick them in the eliminations...

I doubt they could win anything with that design...

Of course if the team with a silly and ridiculous robot design just happened to be a #1 seed that would be a moot point. ;)

Noo..psh, that's ridiculous. A team needs to hurdle to be #1 seed:rolleyes:

During the season I joked about "hovering" the trackball around the track using jets of air :D The trackball wouldn't be touching the robot, so we would never need to stop :D.

And yes this is actually possible, although hard to believe. Unfortunately we couldn't generate enough psi to lift the trackball.

You really should have tried...

Yes a big fan could lift the track ball, but would it hover in one place? Wouldn't wind resistance knock it off? What would happen when it went under the rack and the thrust was deflected?

I would knock it off with my roller claw if I saw a robot doing this

well, with this years new controller, I considered it, and am still going to bring it up if i think it could be useful.

Yeah, I know, I would have knocked it off too... but it would have hovered.

Bernoulli's principle works for any spherical object in a fluid (air) flow. High pressure on one side generates a vacuum on the other, and tends to constrain the sphere to the input flow axially, provided there's a reactive force (gravity) to keep the sphere from just moving away from the fan.

Try it with a basketball and a leafblower sometime... or a trackball and a high power fan.

And I wanted to design and build a jumping bot that could literally hurdle right over the overpass... We would only have to toss the trackball up in the air once we were over the overpass, and catch it on the way down! :D

Actually, if i recall there was a team that did that in 2007, their ramps were all wooden. Simply gorgeous robot.

And as for silly and ridiculous, 2004 I and another freshman wanted to do a robot that would traverse across the bar and prevent anyone from getting on it. We were told we were insane. For anyone who doesnt remember BOB that year that is exactly what they did. Proof that no matter how crazy a design you come up with someone will do it.

Three or four West Coast teams did the same thing. They had an annoying (to their opponents) tendency to do well at competitions.

1760 had a wooden bot for the 2006 game. It was remarkably efficient in shooting the high goal.

I wonder if anybody's ever made a robot that looks vaguely like an animal....

There was a PVC bot at SVR last year... :yikes:

And as for the "team member as robot" thing-what rule would actually prevent it? Aside from S01, of course... The biggest sticking point I guess is the battery rule, but I have a way to get around it: cook all the team member's food using the battery :) There's no rule saying the battery has to be on the robot during the match, is there?

Each year our team has had at least one person suggest the idea of a blimp. it would simply float over where ever it needed to go and do what it needed to do. the only problem would be size, bouant gas, and of course the threat of explosions.:p
