New all-female FIRST Team @ Westinghouse

We have started a new all-girls team at westinghouse. Along with the G-house Pirates, we now have a second team here. Does anyone have any ideas for a team name?

I have yet to find out the team number.

Today, Ana presented us with the challenge of having an all girls team, and we were excited to accept it. We still have to share the same robotics room though, and its not all that big either. It will be exciting to see what ideas we come up with independently in the same room. I can imagine how hard it would be to do that, but we have yet to find out

Any suggestions?

Ninjas? Nah, too obvious.

I'd try "Westinghouse Wenches", but only if everyone feels good about it.

Um, you made a new team now, for this year? How's that work - I thought registration was closed.

The girl-centric Indianapolis team is called POWER - Preparing Outstanding Women for Engineering Roles. Acronyms seem to be popular these days.

It depends on how your team wants to go about the name. I'm go to an all girls school so obviously my team is all girls and we are called the Robettes, you should decide what kind of name you want first, like either a girly name or not

Two years ago, we had an all girls VEX robot team. "Wenches with Wrenches" was the leading choice until someone broke out the dictionary and wenches can have a negative meaning. Bummer

Last year we went to three regionals. We did not want to take everyone to all of them (missing too much school) so at the San Diego regional we had an all girls crew. Not quite the same as a true all girls team, but the females certainly participated in the hands on building and driving since they knew they have to drive, maintain and repair the robot in S.D. They did a great job

We are going to do it again this year and the building is a lot more coed this year.

Sometimes Registration is more closed than others. If somebody pops up at the last minute and donates enough to get a team started, FIRST will accomodate them. They can also be fairly flexible about payment for events, if they are sure they will get paid eventually. I wouldn't expect to see any new teams past today though.

Personally, I like Alan's contribution for a team name.

Is the name Fem-Bots taken?

It would be great to promote the team as a team, not necessarily as a girls' team. I know we still have work to do in this field/area but I would definitely steer very clear of any names that draw attention to a girls' team in any way denoting negativity or weakness or promoting a stereotype regarding women.

If you want to connect with the Pirate theme, think of some different things connected to pirates - such as:
the sea
the navigational instruments
parts of the ship
the stars they used for direction
nautical measurements

things like that.

I know there is a Fem-Bots in Sacramento, CA. If I recall correctly their number is 692. Incidentally I think they were the first team to experiment with autonomy in FIRST robots. They were doing it at a couple of years before it became part of the game.

Yep.

I'd suggesting something along the lines of Women Exceeding Nationally Challenged Habits, or something along that thread. It seems you folks are proud of the all girl part, so make sure to pick a name that shows it, and still shows a unified, intelligent front.

Well you could try other terms for Pirate:
buccaneer
corsair
filibuster
freebooter
marauder
picaroon
privateer
raider(used to death in FIRST. I'd reccomend against it)
rover
sea rover

Re: New all-female FIRST Team @ Westinghouse

or you could try The Amazons or the Girls from Mars (how does that rhyme go?)

Can't wait to meet them. (especially since I work across the street)

How about The Pirate Queens (yes, there is a Broadway Play & book by the same name)?

We did come up with a name. Simple and staying to our roots.
Lady Pirates

There's a debate with our colors though!
haha.
I still want yellow! We're still Pirates, yellow seems fitting to me =]
