Video games

I'm not sure if there's been a thread for this, but I'm sure many of you play video games in your spare time.

How many of you are Nintendo fans? I have been one since birth. My favorite series of course is the metroid series, which accounts for my username :P

Sony? Microsoft? Nintendo?

:ahh: AHHHHHHHH:ahh:

[/panic attack]

I prefer PC games, as the development platform and the playability is much greater. I personally think the Halo series is WAY overrated.... especially because it was originally intended for Mac, before Microsoft bought Bungie. Games like UT3 and F.E.A.R. are much more exciting to me, as they are completely customizable as to how you play (thousands and thousands of different play scenarios.)

I prefer simple get-in, get-out games; no RPGs or MMORPGs, etc. Nothing that takes longer than 3 minutes at a time. I can't stand binge gaming...

So here's my list:
Guitar Hero (any variant, 2, '80s, 3)
Dance Dance Revolution/StepMania (proud owner of a RedOctance Ignition 3.0)
Crazy Taxi (I lose too quickly)

That's about it.

Re: Video games

Yeah I'm currently playing GH3 and crazy taxi used to be one of my favorites! I personally like fast paced games, like Adventure/shooter/strategy, which is why metroid is my favorite series.

As for PC games, they're the best for FPS's IMO. And I totally agree with you Jacob, halo is quite the overrated game. I was never fond of it, it's too mindless.

I used to have 2 Ignitions, until I sold them and bought an Afterburner instead :D I'm pretty hardcore at Guitar Hero also.

I'm very similar, all PC FPS all the way. The only long-term game* I ever got involved in was Super Mario Galaxy, and somewhat Soul Caliber 3 (though that is pretty much pick-up-and-play also). I was in a pretty hardcore Call of Duty clan for 1 and 2 (as well as UT2k4), until they disbanded and I kind of got out of that scene. I've picked up CoD4 and UT3 though, and they are ridiculously amazing games.

I never really liked Halo, since I blow at console FPS's (lack of keyboard/mouse is baad), but I've been playing a lot with my friend lately and I'm getting better. It's definitely a fun game for short periods of time, but I don't see how it's so MASSIVELY popular. I'd take any CoD or any UT over Halo any day.

*with the exclusion of my younger years, when I played Super Mario World for HOURS upon HOURS.

Re: Video games

I play a variety of different platforms, and gameplay styles.

I started playing Diablo II Lord of Destruction when it came out, and began playing the original about six or seven years ago.

I have a Playstation 2, Wii, Xbox 360, Desktop for gaming, and a Laptop for research etc..

I have all four Guitar Heroes for Playstation, I play Call of Duty 4 on Xbox 360, and still play the original Call of Duty on computer(RIFLES ONLY BABY! =P). I play Diablo for computer(obviously), and sometimes play World of Warcraft(just got into a break, since I got my xbox).

All in all, I'll play pretty much any platform and any game as long as I like the gamestyle.
I prefer RPG's and MMORPG's rather than quick-play games such as Guitar Hero.

So having said that, if you guys want to play some Call of Duty(1), or Call of Duty 4 for the 360, pm me your xfire or your Gamertag, and I'll add you.

=)

Peace,
-MTG

I'm a type of person who likes to sit down on a day off and play countless hours of any video game. I personally like playing Halo. Not because of the mindless shooting but the fun you can have while playing. For example, have you ever tried throwing a plasma grenade at some one and then tried to shoot them with the rocket launcher right after? but by accident you hit the grenade and it comes back and hits you? or throwing a plasma into the air and trying to play catch. (lol that's my favorite) i also love GH ^_^:yikes: :yikes: :D

Yeah I hear that COD4 has some great multiplayer.

If you're a multiplayer person, I can see that. As for me, I like an engaging, long and deep story line, while not being boring.

GH3 was fun for a while, but I got bored of it quickly (not the best of the Guitar heros)

Re: Video games

Personally, I don't like MMORPGs. It's mainly that I don't want to have to level up just so I can stand a chance in PvP, which is generally the only fun part. If somebody made a PvP-only MMO with no levels in which a brand-new player could beat somebody who's been playing the game for years if the brand-new player is better.
But anyways, to the games...
A few of the PC Games I like:
Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, 2, 2142 - I liked 1942 the best. After Vietnam, they made it too MMO-ish with the weapon unlocks.

Call of Duty and Call of Duty 4 - The best team deathmatch spawning I've seen. You spawn near your teammates, so the teams attack and try to hold strategic positions. However, I don't like what CoD4 did with the global rankings and levels.

Counter-Strike Source - I don't like having to wait until the end of the round to respawn so I generally only play on deathmatch servers.

Deus Ex - First game that I played that I actually cared about the story

Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2 - Also very good story and amazing gameplay

Portal - Amazing and hilarious 3d first person puzzle game. Even Zero Punctuation said it was good.

Team Fortress 2 - I'd have to say this is my favorite game at the moment. It's just so fun!

Oblivion - My favorite RPG. One of my favorite features is that the world levels with you, so that you don't get horribly owned just because you walked into a high-level area and you don't get bored because you have a higher level than anything else.

Unreal Tournament 2004 - Very very fun, but it does get a little repetitive after a while.

Urban Terror - I love sliding and wall jumping
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars - ET has a great teamwork reward model. I'm disappointed in Battlefield 2 for not copying it better.

I recently got a Wii, and I only have 2 games for it, Metriod Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, both of which I enjoy.

I also recently got a DS and I only have Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, a very nice game, for it.

[I got tired of writing something about every game right about here...]
Playstation / PS2:
Dance Dance Revolution
Dynasty Warriors
Okami

My xfire and Steam are both goatsgomoo if you want to add me.

The Wii (or DS, not sure which, it's a Nintendo system) is getting Okami. I love the visuals, but the game seems kinda stupid to me. I guess it's cause I haven't really looked into the game.

Playing with others on Halo can yield very interesting results. Especially when two of you try to kill each other in an elevator on co-op. Explosions are fun.

Between me and my three suite-mates we have a Playstation 3, Playstation 2 (Guitar Hero engine), Wii, and Sega Genesis.
At the beginning of the year the PS3 was a Resistance Co-op machine, and most of our gaming time was split between Guitar Hero 2 (PS2) and Super Smash Bros: Melee (Wii). When GH3 came out it took over our PS2 and our gaming time for a while. It was pretty quickly replaced when my PS3 obtained Rock Band though (which is a vastly superior game). The Wii finally got to play a Wii (instead of merely playing the Gamecube Super Smash title) when Mario Galaxy came out, but now that it's been beaten (aside of the Luigi campaign), the Wii hasn't been used in some time. Since coming back most of our gaming time has been split between CoD4 and Rock Band.

Well they aren't hard per se, but It would get to the point where I have this one character I really love, and then they die at the end of a mission due to something stupid, so I'd have to start the mission over.

PS3 isn't a game, but I figure you mean all PS3 games :P

Also, POKEMON!!! Man, that is the only RPG game I've actually played through. Most RPGs are too slow for me, and I can't stand it, especially where they're so large and obscure, I have no idea what to do. The recent pokemon games, like Pearl and Diamond were definitely not as good as the old ones, like kanto and jhoto.

I'll agree with you on that one, GH3 was the first GH game i really played, and the difficulty just sky rockets after the 2nd level or so. I played rhythm games before (mainly Amplitude...anyone who hasn't played that, check it out!) but that was ridiculous. Gameplay is emphasized in the GH series. I just bought Rock Band and I love it. The songs are easier, so far. But I'm not too shabby on GH3. I don't care about the graphics of a game where my whole goal is to look at the screen and press the buttons at the correct time. I can't see the rest of it. The graphics are better on the 360 version, though, if that matters at all.

Re: Video games

Guitar Hero 3 is by far the worst of the GH franchise, imho. The new UI is very subpar (I enjoy the streak counter, but everything is much harder to read, and placed and colored poorly). The characters, particularly the lead singer and drummer, are shoddy at best (aside of the pretty realistic Tom Morello and Slash models). The song selection is cut out of a roughly similar palette as the previous GH games, except that the bonus songs now take a significant foreign/post-hardcore turn instead of Boston-area Indie and celebrity guests (ie Zakk Wylde and Buckethead). The gameplay is mediocre, at best, on GH standards. It's devolved in flailing hammer-ons/pull-offs that you don't even need to be very accurate to hit. The difficulty sky-rockets towards the final few sets (making the last two sets nigh-impossible on expert). None of us (my suite-mates and myself) have been able to beat Raining Blood on Expert yet, and not for a lack of effort or skill.
Rock Band, on the other hand, is a completely different beast. The drums and vocals are obviously a completely different animal, and the guitar is barely comparable as well. Ignoring the controllers for now, when comparing the guitar, I will have to side with Rock Band.
The Rock Band guitar gameplay is quite fun, even if often easier to pass (until the very end). The notes, particularly the hammer-ons/pull-offs, require much more accuracy to hit (play Rock Band for a while then play GH and you'll see). The songs are often more chord-based, but the movements are less annoying/impossible than the GH chord-based songs. Occasionally there will be awkward/long breaks during the songs while other instruments play (this is a band game instead of just guitar), but they typically don't take away too much, especially when playing in a full band. The UI is far superior to GH3 (the pass/fail meter is a little bit out of the way, but it's consistent with the band mode which is helpful), with the Overdrive (Stat Power) meter being very easy to see, and the ability to see how many stars you have on the song. The solid black background makes notes contrast greatly, making them very easy to see (once again, switching back to GH3 makes you really notice the difference). While the first few sets are rather easy, the end of the game (and much of the DLC) can get rather difficult. I still haven't managed to beat Green Grass and High Tides or Ride the Lightning in solo mode on expert, and Blackened gives me all sorts of trouble. Rock Band's very frequently updated Downloadable Content (DLC) is also a big plus (3 new songs every thursday).
I may continue this rant with my controller opinions (bottom line is PS2 SG > Rock Band Strat > PS3/360 Les Paul > 360 Explorer > PS2 Kramer) some day.

Also, CoD4 does beat Halo 3 (or 2 or 1) easily. ;)

I'm going to have to side with the hard-players (kinda). At least with the PS3 head-to-head system, it can get very frustrating when the only opponents a skilled player can find are playing on a much lower difficulty, and regardless of how well we play we can't win. The 360s ranked match system supposedly helps a lot, but it's very frustrating on the PS3. :(

The 360s ranked match system supposedly helps a lot, but it's very frustrating on the PS3. :(

I just thought it was amusing because it wasn't a ranked match... the ranked matches for both players to play on the same level.

Ditto, although I did buy it the day it came out... worst money spent. (I was very good, too)

I may continue this rant with my controller opinions (bottom line is PS2 SG > Rock Band Strat > PS3/360 Les Paul > 360 Explorer > PS2 Kramer) some day.

Also, CoD4 does beat Halo 3 (or 2 or 1) easily. ;)

- Blackened on expert drums is hard :( I can beat Tom Sawyer (soo much fun) and kinda pass Foreplay, but Blackened is tough (I usually fail at 80%, the last reiteration of the stupid section). I'm also working on that Who song that carries no reasonable resemblance of rhythm or a beat whatsoever.
- I was going to go into this huge rant about how the PS2 Kramer is the best guitar ever made, how could you have it last, etc.. until I GIS'd it and realized that the Kramer is the new one and the SG was the good one. I agree with your ordering, except I hate the RB Strat due to the not-clickyness, and I really like the 360 Xplorer for some reason. I would just switch those two. Also because I can't beat Jordan Expert on anything but the SG.
- CoD4 is the best FPS ever made. Ever.

*disclaimer - I don't actually own a 360, but I play Rock Band and CoD4 at a friend's house, and I own CoD4 for the PC (Xfire name is pvtgflo, add me y'all).

The non-clikyness of the Strat takes a little bit to get used to, but doesn't really change the play too much. It can actually be beneficial, as you don't have to strum as far for the strum to register (you can typically strum about halfway). Although for the really fast sections, it's pretty hard to do that, and you end up strumming the full length anyway (but the clicks really don't help that much in the really fast sections). The Strats also go back to the reliable "ball bearing in a tube" method of Star Power/Overdrive, instead of the accelerometers in the 360 and GH3 guitars. The tube method is much less twitchy, and you typically won't set it off by just adjusting yourself or sitting down/standing up (although some strats, not all, are a bit on the hard side to activate). The biggest downside to the strats are that they wear out rather quickly. While after a few months of high performance playing they were still functional, the first generation (at least, we'll see about newer ones) gave a much more lackluster performance, and were very difficult to play well. Luckily you can send them back under warranty and get free replacements! :D

Also, I don't own a 360 either. PS3 ftw

I just started to play Battlefield 2. I am mainly a Call of Duty 4 guy. I actually play on a professional team on Xbox Live. We are part of a bigger clan called Art of War. You can visit the site here --->http://www.clanaow.com/
Anyone who is good can sign up on the forums and ask to join.

CS: Source is awesome. I could never really get hooked because my time is limited between my robotics team, school, and my clan. ^_^

im guessing you are talking about the birth by sleep video, which is the secret ending for kingdom hearts: final mix+. it is actually part 2 of the trailer for the psp game titled birth by sleep. part 1 was the secret ending in kh2. birth by sleep will be using the same engine as final fantasy: crisis core. the ds game is called 358/2 days. hopefully they will come out sometime next year. there is also a mobile phone game called coded. i have no info on kh3. none has been released yet, except some possible clues from kh2: final mix+ in the secret areas of the game. keep up to date at http://www.kh2.co.uk/ and http://www.kingdomhearts3.net/

and I'm retarded when it comes to using an xbox... I'm like soooooo inverted... and teh sensitivity is never high enough... ughh..

PC games definitely = ownage :P

Ugh, you're one of those people who thinks the Wii is a gimmick and has a library consisting of completely kids' games, aren't you? Wrong. No More Heroes is easily one of the best games of this generation. Not to mention such blockbuster titles as Twilight Princess and SSBB. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Wii fanboy. I don't even own a Wii. It just gets kind of annoying when people complain about games like Wii Sports and don't factor in games like NMH.

But I have to agree. UT is the only FPS anyone ever needs.

Edit: KH 358/2 Days is gonna owwwwwwwwwwwwn so hard.

x.x

My XBOX360 just got the red rings of death... right after 2 matches of COD4 where my clan ([VOLS]) went 200-12 and 200-9 on Ground War Domination...

I'm sad, I'll be out of video games for a little while. Oh well, paintball season is coming up! Time to test out my new Proto Matrix Rail.

I'll be the odd man out and say I don't plan to get SSBB. ;)

I generally play Call of Duty 4 (level 18 SSgt II, 1st time Prestige) and Halo 3 (Captain Grade 2) on XBox 360, and music games such as DDR and Beatmania on PS2 and in the arcade. I make Stepmania step files - if you've seen the name "D2RCR" around, that be me. :P

If anyone here plays CoD4 and wants to play, my gamertag's CyclonicCoreD2.

Lol, I don't actually have a Wii myself.
I'm playing it on my suitemates, which can't connect to the internet now because Drexel feels the need to test out their new wireless network (which requires a log-in screen that doesn't seem to like any consoles) on the honors dorm. :(

I'm upset that I don't own a Wii, for my Smash skillz are formidable. After about an hour of playing with Snake, I've decided to use him as my new main.

Also, using the rocket launcher to grab a Smash Ball from half the stage away on New Pork City? It just feels good.

Lol, did I not address this yet? My avatar is that of our mentor. I found it to be a hilarious picture, so it had to go up. But now it's a pic of me :P

So I'm making a run through Expert on GHIII. It's so freaking hard. The roadblocks are insane. I'm stuck on The Metal, and even though that song shouldn't be that hard (I can beat the songs after that song easily), I just can't get past it, and it makes me mad to no end.

How I missed this thread, I don't know...anyway, I began life as a Nintendo fan only, but last year I got interested in getting a 360 after playing Halo 3 at a friend's house.

My current consoles include: N64, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, DS Light, Gamecube, Wii, and, finally, the oddball of the bunch, the Xbox 360

Currently re-playing the Orange box (Half-Life 2 is awesome), but I'm also willing to play Brawl. My main on Brawl, by the way, is Ike. And I don't care what you say about him, any character that can KO most other characters at only 50-75% damage is awesome.
