How to Mount Things
 

Well, one of our shop walls can only hold our clock, as it was erected hastily a few years ago and is impossibly thin.

The other is cement, and we don't really have a way to install mounting brackets on it.

I have to say, creative solution... I do worry about the safety of it, though, as under stress zip ties can (and have!) failed before, and you have a lot of sharp and point objects "hanging by a thread".

What you really need is to rent a hammer drill from your local tool rental place, and drill into that wall... that would be REALLY secure.

Correction: Two hacksaws and a hammer. Go grab some gorrilla glue and you guys will be fine. :D

Well, I bought us 3 $5 hacksaws at Home Depot on Friday... we have a wood bandsaw we "borrowed" from the physics department (our teacher-leader's a physics teacher), and some other stuff, but I'm still waiting to get reimbursed by the school. (Edit: not for $15, I spent about $90)

We still plan to buy:
-Metal bandsaw blades
-Cordless drill (we have a 1/3 HP corded one from an MIT swapfest though)
-Clamps (we have 2...)
-Drill press
-More wrenches
-Belt sander
-Waterjet (jk; although we semi-have-access to one at MIT, for some money.) (Myself and 3 friends who started this team worked on MIT's team 97 last year)... we probably won't use it much, though, as our design so far doesn't call for much waterjetted stuff.

And of course, McMaster / IFI / AM robot part orders that'll take like a week to go through the school and then a bit more to arrive.

All in all, looking good so far.

please, Please, PLEASE find something better to hang that with. If you can't rent a hammer drill like mentioned earlier, then get, at the VERY least, steel cables, rope rated for the weight of it, or ANYTHING. That second picture you posted scares me a lot. Otherwise, good job on making due with what you have.

Hey, that's a good idea - I would probably just slap a bunch of duct tape all over the place (which would work, but would not be so elegant.)
If you are worried about the zipties breaking - you can use more of them to support it.
By the way, you can never have too many hacksaws.
And I see safety goggles ftw. . .

Steel cables? Wow, that seems a bit safer than we usually like to be. Maybe, though. Chances are that 10 more zipties and possibly a hole in the wall will do the trick.

A five dollar stud finder from your local hardware store might help you find some usable space on your thin wall.

You can get zip ties that can only hold twenty or so pounds, and ones that can hold over three hundred. Those don't look like the three hundred variety, so I would suggest switching them out for something a bit stronger. Anchors/screws are probably the best solution, and a hammer drill isn't even really that necessary to use them. We put up some pegboard in our shop a few weeks ago and did it just using a normal drill with a masonry bit. So, while a hammer drill helps, you may be able to get along without it. It's worth a try anyway.

I don't know if we're allowed to make holes in the wall, though...

If we are, you can be sure we'll try to just drill through it / do something

You might want to check with your state's electrical code, you may be in violation by hanging something from the electrical conduit.

Yeah, I'm from 2349, and we don't even know for sure that the pipe contains wires, nor do I know if an exposed conduit is legitimate either
we've been butting heads alot with the school administration as is, so we prolly dont want to point out electrical code violations

If it's crashed on the floor, then we may have a problem. If not...who knows?
