What the trackball is REALLY used for!

So last Saturday, 1547 got down to business testing out how much fun we could have with a trackball. On one of our breaks, some of the girls on Waldo decided to have a little fun and hurdle themselves over the ball...pun intended!
They're really funny videos and there's more but I'll link my two favourite ones

p.s. what has everyone else done with their trackballs? I've heard stories of seeing how far people can drop theirs before they explode. Any other videos to have a laugh at?

Yeah, that's quite the video. Ours beats yours though. We saw another post somewhere on delphi about dropping the ball from tall heights. So obviously, anything on delphi is true and doable so we tried it. We absolutely destroyed our trackball...Video coming shortly!

After Dave sees these videos, I am sure he will decide not to ever use these trackballs again with the evidence of students hurting themselves. Thank you Laura.

Lol good job. And why does every one feel the need to destroy it? :P

Students are an immensely talented group. That creativity and curiosity is part of what makes their work good. It also means the game could take place in a completely padded room and they'd still find ways to injure themselves. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It was really fun playing with the ball, even though it owned me..

Is it bad that our team did that on the first day except it was males?

Well Laura, I see you're training the new recruits well up there in Canadia.

Aye... Don't do that in NJ..

(And if you do, make sure there are plenty more cameras nearby to capture what will end hysterically yet again I'm sure.) :p

Jumpball!

Oh the creativity! The kids here invented the very addictive game of Jumpball, which as far as I can see is a mix of volleyball, soccer, hot-potato, and, uh, youthful energy. The ball is placed in the center slot of the overpass, two kids stand side-by-side underneath it*, and someone counts "3-2-1-Jumpball!" The two players then jump up and knock the ball with their heads only, head-butting it between the three slots, always keeping the ball in motion on the overpass. If you knock it to the floor, touch it with your hands, or let it stop on the overpass, you lose the turn. I'm sure there are other rules; I can't claim full understanding of the game or the fine nuances of play. But it does play well.

* My sole suggestion to the game is to start back-to-back, so the two players can't see the other starting, but they just knocked heads. Maybe that rule should be reserved for Professional Jumpball.

Well... I've got to say that's a good way to get injured. At least I'm supposed to- and I'm surprised no one wasn't...

We took the track ball out into the shop garage and I had the students kick it as hard as they could to try and lift it to 7 foot into the air. I was the willing target to kick at- but the ball moved so slowly there wasn't much thread of injury (and I weigh at least 2x them) so impacts were limited.

Eventually the ball popped due to a bad bounce into a metal table- sliced it right open (1/4" gash). Still...

Have your videographer hold the camera carefully- watching the jerky video is tough.

Yah we just took the video on a digital camera. Just goofing around and having fun..no official team footage! All credit goes to Christina though for filming all of her crazy videos and somehow still being the highlight of the video's entertainment.

Katy you are right as far as the game taking place in a completely padded room.

... just keep in mind that, if you are to get hurt at school, the school is completely responsible for you. I know of few teams who were threatened by their school to shut down the program because of kids getting hurt.

All I am trying to say is, be safe and careful with what you do.

We just had loads of fun pushing it down the stairwell at school. (Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy). We threw it around the hallway some, but there are lots fo pipes and sharp edges under the ceiling that we had to aviod.

We used the trackball to play 4 on 4 indoor Trackball Soccer, which is pretty much normal soccer except with a trackball.
The only problem is that today everyone who played is complaining that they got hurt by the ball.

Re: What the trackball is REALLY used for!

Let's just say our trackball has battle scars, but still hasn't officially popped yet. It deflates a little each day, but it hasn't popped. We've played extreme volleyball with it using the field as the net. We've played what we call Hippo Ball, long story. It's where we take it and kick it and throw it at each other as hard as we can while we're forming a circle. We had a video, but out videographrer, Brett, took it off Youtube. Also, just today the guys that were left, plus me, decided to have our teacher hold it to his hip area while our heaviest male members run at him. Let's say it ended with him flying back 7 feet, slamming into the tables, benches, and stools at the side of the room. He hit his head hard pretty bad, too. Plus he was wiggling his tooth some afterward. Plus, we totally demolished our field! Good thing I won't be there tomorrow to help clean up our war wreck of a workshop! :D :D :D

We like to bounce it around as if in bball. Now we'll really have fun w/ it knowing that we dont have to test anything out using the ball.
