Perform the Star Spangled Banner??

Is any one going to try out to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the competition?

We are going to try at the Saint Louis regional, my band Dysfunctional Relationship, sort of a Jimi Hendrix thing, but were not going to wing it and with our lead singer singing.

Say where you’re regional is and who you are, if you have sung before. I want to know if any one thinks about doing this.

since no one else replied I guess I will...

Honestly...I've never thought of it. then again the star spangled banner is not my forte.

I would love to have some good music play in some of the competitions though.

(There is enough info about me in my profile. I think...)

I have sung the Star Spangled Banner as a collaboration with students from 103 at last year's NJ Regional. Depending on how your Regional Committee decides to do it, they may ask for students on Thursday morning to volunteer to sing either Friday, Saturday, or both days during Opening Ceremonies. Either students will sing it (a capella with Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) or FIRST plays their recording, just like any other country's anthem.

This works for students from any country! The girls from 1547 sang the Canadian Anthem for us as well.

My advice would be to ask your Regional Director how they plan on doing the anthems. It differs from place to place. Also, remember that you are representing your team/regional/state/country. Perfection is pretty much demanded. Get in touch with them now and practice, practice, practice!

:)

I don't have much to say in terms of performing the Star Spangled Banner, but I hope to see you perform in St. Louis.

Good Luck

We love to hear students who represent competing teams perform the national anthem during opening ceremonies at the St. Louis Regional. We ask individuals and small vocal groups to audition on Thursday. Ensembles who would need to bring instruments are asked to submit an audition tape*. If your group is interested in submitting a tape please let me know and I'll get you the contact details.

*I know the term "audition tape" is a little old fashioned. More contemporary electronic media are also OK.

At Buckeye last year we had the Star Spangled Banner, Oh Canada, and I believe the team from Puerto Rico sang their anthem. Some people may be skeptical of singing it and all, but we live under a gov't that still lets us hold this competition. Be grateful.

Two senior girls from Exploding Bacon sang the Star Spangled Banner at the Florida Regional on Friday last year. They did audition for the Regional person in charge. I believe a young lady from the Pink Team sang it on Saturday.

This is one of my HOT BUTTONS....
Being invited to sing the national anthem is a real honor. GO for it!
THAT being said...
The Star Spangled Banner belongs to All of us so any "solos" should be done, allowing enough structure for everyone to join in. ...Not sure a Jimi Hendrix version qualifies but that's not my call.
I had the unique situation of having an international team of American and British students. I was a bit taken aback when we attended our first regional and the UK kids didn't know the words to their national anthem.
Last Year, I printed it out and we ALL sang it when it was played.
Anyway... if I'm there... there will NOT be a soloist... I'll always be (perhaps embarrassing everyone but) ...accompanying.

I don't have good enough range.

I've heard it sung in ways that made me feel less than graciously professional towards the singer.

And I've heard excellent renditions (last year comes to mind).

Were my voice more in my control, I'd do it acapella with some random folks.

That is precisely what I did last year. My mentor decided to volunteer me to do it, and it actually helped me overcome a lot of stage fright. Collaboration is great, especially when it's with representatives with different teams.
