Lap Times
I was just wondering if any of the teams who have there drive train completed have tested there robot to see what kind of lap times the would expect in the competition assuming unimpeded motion and also just in general how quickly do you think robots will be able to maneuver around the track.

Re: Lap Times
Our design/Strategy was to get 8 to 12 laps @ average speed of 9 FPS, sometimes pushing the ball, sometimes not. 5 additional robots would make a free space lap time rather misleading. We will know in 2 weeks when the bot is moving.:)

Re: Lap Times
We did some testing with this over the past weekend and found that we can get 10 or 11 laps in a match with decent driving but unimpeded and not concerning ourselves with the trackballs.
As far as how this will change when competition starts, I bet some matches will have many laps (such as elimination rounds(especially finals matches)) but it is more likely that there will be lots of traffic jams near the overpass in both lanes for the majority of matches. Either way, I think this will be a fun game to watch and will have many last second wins as a team just barely hurdles, places a ball, or crosses their finish line. |
Re: Lap Times
I think a 15-20 second lap with 5 other bots on the field will be a bit average. Maybe there will be some sub-15 second laps from some of the faster bots

Re: Lap Times
So far with our 2006 robot, we were getting 8 second laps as the only robot on our practice field and also not going for the ball. With that, we could get 15 laps, but throw in 5 other robots and the balls and it would be closer to ~15 seconds or so a lap.

Re: Lap Times
Using our 2007 bot, we got 12.5 laps and our best lap time was 6 seconds. This was good though because our gearbox was going bad. :(

Re: Lap Times
We just ran our drive train for this year today around the field. We didn't have a carpet so we tended to drift around the turns. We ended up completing around 10 laps in 2 minutes. Currently we are setup for around 11.8 ft/sec. Did you guys use a carpeted surface? If so that might give you more control around the turns.

Re: Lap Times
We're running a six wheel drive at about 10fps now so i guess we should average 8-10 laps on a unrestricted path.

Re: Lap Times
We tested our 2007 bot, since we're planning on using a similar chassis, and we'll still be in the 120 lb + bumpers + battery weight range again. I think we were doing about 8 sec/lap, which would be a max of 15 laps in teleoperated. With 5 other robots and 4 trackballs on the field, we're estimating 14-15 seconds will be an average lap time for us and most other robots.

Re: Lap Times
Take the lap times you post with no one on the field and double them (at least) when you start to worry about the track balls and other robots on the field.

Re: Lap Times
We were doing some laps with a mentor driving our 07 bot this morning, and with somewhat spotty driving, and a couple pauses midway through the one lap I timed, we were at ~7-8 seconds.

Re: Lap Times
Our robot isn't too fast but can consistently tun 10s laps with no traffic. It will be different when there are a lot more things going on :)
