Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

We always come up with a name for our bot, usually having something to do with the bot itself. In 2004 when the robot was practically held together with zip-ties we picked up the name Zippy. In 2005 when a victor shorted and started sparking on just about our fist time testing the completed bot we named it Sparky. 06 because we used oh so many zip-ties again and our bot was quite box shaped we went with Zippy-Cubed or Z3 for short. Last year we considered it basically a miracle that the bot both got done on time and also managed to be underweight so we went with Lucky. This year when we managed to finish the robots design we already started making jokes about what to name the bot, using a 16-pound hammer to hit a ball over the overpass was quite distinct, and because we just love trying to dance we named this years bot Hammertime.

last year our robot was princess consuela.

this year, heathcliff southie.

southie after the woman who started the FIRST robotics program at our school..and heathcliff after the most beautiful person in the world.

1646;s robot doesn't really have an official name yet. I am personally pushing for the name Victor, but Scopinox is floating around too.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Team is Sparky 384 and each years robot is a version of Sparky (2.0, 3.0, and so on into infinity). Sparky was chosen because our bot was so "hand made" the first year we thought sparks would just shoot out of the back of it.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Team 932's robot name this year is the Circuit Charger, because our school's masocot is the charger, and we kind of are staying along the theme of a dodge charger.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

This year we went with Disc Van Dyke. It has no connection to the robot but we had a Fr. Van Dyke at our school several years ago and we liked the pun. KokoEd suggested that we change our name to The Howitzer at FLR.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

OK, I'll help with the revival.

This year I proposed that our robot be named Hillary. I was hoping for some sort of quizzical response about why a robot should be named after a Secretary of State. I then had to explain about Sir Edmund Hillary as one of the most famous climbers and one of the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Ho hum - history - yeah, well, Sir Edmund ain't such a bad name. I should have gone really abstruse and mentioned Tenzing Norgay.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Our robot is named Ragnarok! We named it for our climber, which looks a bit sinister. Ragnarok (in Norse mythology) is a series of future events, including a great battle which results in the death of a number of major figures , the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water (we are hoping for a water game!) It is also a world in Halo 4. See more at http://www.team708.org/current-robot.html .

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

2481's 2013 robot is named Optimus Climb.

In addition to its efficient 30 point climbing prowess, it also transforms from shooter, to runner, to shooter, to runner, to climber...and back again to shooter for the start of the next match. We feel the name suits it well...although, we've had a bit of a hilarious internal debate on whether or not Optimus should be referred to with male or female pronouns...

It's big, red, and sort-of-rectangular, so we added a flag and called it the Fire Truck. (Complete with fireman hats and suspenders on all the team members.)

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

"Tyrannosaucer Rex" is the name of 225's robot this year. Somebody thought the robot looked like a tyrannosaurus rex, and the name stuck. We had some down time near the end of the build season and at our first competition, so some of the students decorated the robot with markers, contact cement, and foam to match its name.

My team names their robots every year.

2008 - Myrtle the Turtle
2009 - Hunk o' Junk
2010 - Reccostobor
2011 - FIRST Strike
2012 - Trickshot
2013 - Cyclone

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Are teams robots are usually named after some distinct feature, or structure on the bot

2007-The Fighting Calculator (no real reason rookie year)
2008-Heavy Lifter (self explanatory)
2009-Box-o-Rocks (it held LOTS of moon rocks)
2010-The Multiplier (large x structure on the back of the robot)
2011-The Scorpion (our arm looked like a large scorpion tail)
2012-Blue Thunder (the robot was very blue that year)
2013-Trap (the main structure of the robot was a trapezoid that everything was attached to, also trap shooting came to mind)

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

From the FRC Manual:

4.1.13 ROBOT Name

R 4.1.13.1

Each registered FRC team must provide their ROBOT with a title, pseudonym, label, or nom de plume.

If this task proves challenging as a 30 point climb, it is suggested that each TEAM, upon the Bag and Tag deadline, go outside their build site and name their ROBOT after the first thing that they see in the natural world.
For example: Falling Rain, Foot of Snow, Half Moon, or Spraying Skunk, are considered acceptable.

Naming the ROBOT after your TEAM and the number of years that you have been in FIRST is considered to exhibit a level of creativity that is non-commensurate with the number of years that your team has been competing and will be penalized by the Master of Ceremony or Game Announcer by labeling your ROBOT with a fresh tag.

This is your creation and you owe it a personality.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Team 3753's robot is named Charizard, for 2 reasons:
1) it's our third year, so we wanted a C name
2) when it came time for top 8 picking, we wanted teams to be able to yell "Charizard, we choose you!"

2005- The Scorpion
2006- Clyde (from the orange ghost in Pacman, because Pacman ate dots, and our bot picked up balls)
2007- Johnny 5- the two suction cups in front made it look like the robot Johnny 5 from Short Circuit
2008- The "Land Shark". The painting on the claws look like shark's teeth, but it's on land, so...although some wanted to call it the Flying Tiger, after the P-38 (?) Flying Tiger where we got the paint idea.

Graham is right about Team 1676's first four years. A secondary reason for naming the 2006 bot Clyde was to honor Walt "Clyde" Frazier of the New York Knicks, since that robot shot basketballs (Aim High). The naming meeting usually happens after build week 5, because by then everybody on the team can see the shape of the bot.
2009 - Apollo, in keeping with the Lunacy theme. That was also the first year we built a practice robot. We named the practice robot Artemis (Apollo's twin).
2010 - Weeble. You know - weebles wobble but they don't fall down. We perceived that the humps in Breakaway would induce rollovers, so we built the robot incredibly bottom-heavy. We have photos of the robot on its front bumper, tilted past vertical, and it still fell back down onto its wheels. What a crowd reaction! The practice robot was named Wobble.
2011 - Mantisaurus. It looked like a cross between a Praying Mantis and a dinosaur. The practice robot was Electric Funeral (you can guess how neat the wiring was on that one).
2012 - Iron Horse. The robot's profile looked like a horse, or a Knight chess piece. The practice robot was Sarah Jessica Parker (make your own connections).
2013 - This year's robot is Sidewinder, because it shoots from the side. The practice robot is Turtle, because it's short and compact, and the concept of a two-headed turtle is an inside joke on the team this year.

Of course all Pi-oneers also know that starting in 2006 the unofficial working name (prior to official naming) of any of our robots is Mabawlz. This year it was Mabawlz 8.0.

Since our team name is the Channel Cats, and we're Catfish, we try to chose something a bit... fishy.

2013: Fishbee
2012: BassCatBot
2011: Cahuna Cat
2010: Chum Chucker/Chummy
2009: Crater Cat
2008: Hydra
2007: Nos Machen
2006: Hunter
2005: Lone Lemming
2004: Mettle Tester
2003: WIB (What Isn't Broken)

Here are some of the names of our 558's robots since I joined the team in 2009:

2009: The Great Glass Elevator- It was pretty much a polycord "elevator" that picked up the moon rocks
2010: KISS- Our robot looked like a Hershey kiss
2011: ? - I'm sure we had a name for the robot but it has seemed to slip my mind
2012: The Lampshade of Doom- We shot the basketballs with a pneumatic catapult that had a lampshade on the end. Yes, the lampshade shot the basketball. No joke. (See Attached Picture)
2013: Pez Dispenser of Doom- Our Shooter arm looks like a Pez Dispenser, pretty self explanatory

Team 1554 robot names since I joined the team:
2013: Botman
2012: Woody
2011: Admiral P.L.O.W.
2010: Mufasa

P.L.O.W. originally stood for "Pneumatically Lifts Objects Well", but after competition we had to change it to "Pneumatically Lifts Objects... Well..."

Our robot this year was named Genesis, because it is our rookie year and our first robot.
However, we started calling it Carl partway through the build season for some reason.
So now its nametag reads "Genesis AKA Carl".

In my time at 1648:
BEST 2011: The Stalking Mantis
BEST 2012: (Unofficially) Apollo 115
FIRST 2012: Biggie Small Boots (Named for our teem name and our bridge lowerer that had a boot stuck on it.)
FIRST 2013: Heavily contested, but was decided to be El Torro Rojo del Diablo Magnifico. Our practice robot was named Chassity, as apparently some people don't know how to spell chassis.

our Robot's name is RoDeL. It stands for Robot Delivery Lifecycle, something along the lines of the engineering lifecycle that we pushed a lot this year to accomplish. That involved meticulously designing the robot and understanding the game requirements before we started to build

We've tried to keep our robot names in line with our team name from year to year. Rebound Rumble's bot we named TAZER (TechBrick's Absolute Zero Electricity Robot). Our Ultimate Ascent bot name is a little more whimsical; we named "him" Kelvin: it unifies the three words of our lengthy team name. :)

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

At first, our robot's name was Murphy's Lawyer. We lost the first five matches of our season and, halfway through the Phoenix Regional, renamed it Stormageddon and won our next eight matches. I guess we changed some things other than the name, but don't fool with Murphy's Law.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

2011: IAH (Insert Acronym Here) was named as an afterthought, but after the season we renamed it EOD (Explosive Outerwear Dispenser) as a t-shirt cannon, but we mostly call it the paradebot.
2012: BEC (Ball Ejector Catapult) was fittingly named, and is one syllable as opposed to IAH's three.
2013: HEX doesn't have an acronym. There's a huge hexagon on our turret, so we named it Hex, and we officially have a name pattern.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Lol, our team's robot names always come about rather spontaneously and just happen to stick. Last year our robot was named Frank for no apparent reason. Personally, I love the name. This year, the robot was named Odessa. No idea why. It just happens, although everybody has fun with it afterward trying to rename it.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

We have a long complex naming process for our robot involving nominations then an initial voting period then winnowing it down to two choices before we hold a final vote. It usually happens when we take the robot from our shop to a sponsor in week 5 to get it weighed precisely for the first time. We've broken the patter in the last few years but we try to name it something to do with red. For reference:

In general, we try to name it after some recognizable feature of the robot or just a cool name.

2007: Red Rover (cool name)
2008: Red Dragon (cool name)
2009: Red Hurricane (helix was kinda like a hurricane)
2010: The Commander (named after a mentor who was moving away nickname)
2011: Duck 'n Cover (robot looked like a duck)
2012: Dr. Swoosh (like Dr. Suess but basketball)
2013: Red Raptor (back to the roots of red; robot has a tall arm)
