Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

You can see how good we are at naming by this list:
  • 1995 - Unnamed
  • 1996 - Hexorcist
  • 1997 - Ring Wrangler
  • 1998 - The Bobcat
  • 1999 - The Bobcat
  • 2000 - The Bobcat
  • 2001 - The Bobcat 2001
  • 2002 - The Bobcat 2002 (informally: The Mini-Fridge)
  • 2003 - The Bobcat 2003
  • 2004 - The Bobcat
  • 2005 - The Bobcat
  • 2006 - The Bobcat
  • 2007 - The Ring Wrangler mk.XIII
  • 2008 - Black Betty
As you can see, we have something of a 3-year cycle (it's actually aligned with our 3-year success cycle too...).

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Our name is simple and requires no voting. This year it is RDX

last years robot was RD9 or RDIX

RD Standing for Robo Dawgs 10 or X standing for the fact this is our 10th robot

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Our bot last year was the Rambot, since it was our first year. Due to its appearance, however, every single team I've met that knew us said, "Oh, you guys are the ones with the big purple box, huh?"
It's maroon, guys.
;P

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

842 has named it's FIRST robots after people who have helped the team, yet are not the teachers, parents or others who directly receive a benefit from the team.

Our robots have been:
2003 Rosie: Named after a student who supported the team and raised funds, yet she was not a member. "I just think you guys are doing a great thing and I wanted to help."

2004 Marcos: An adult in the community who works at Intel and "adopted" us.

2005 Adam: The deceased son of a teacher at school who has donated so much time and support to the robot kids, especially the girls.

2006 Karen: Physicist, Ph.D., athlete, astronaut applicant, inventor and entrepreneur. She is the most upbeat person on the planet. She met us and volunteered to work with us. What a role model.

2007 Jerry: Karen's husband. Jerry is an architect and owns his own company. After watching his wife work with us, he became hooked. He is the most level headed, even tempered person on the planet.

2006 Virginia's DREAM: Virgina is one of those fantastic kids who strives to be graciously professional because it's the right thing to do. We are inspired by Virginia who works hard, contributes to the community, and excelled in high school. Virginia did not attend Carl Hayden. She was a student at another district school, North High School.
A week before she was to start at Arizona State University (full scholarship), she was taken from her family, placed in a holding cell with 30+ female prisoners for four days (one toilet, no hygiene supplies) She remained there until she "voluntarily" signed deportation papers. She did not talk to an attorney, her parents were not allowed to see her. Eighteen year old Virginia was taken to the Mexican border with only the money she had in her pocket and the clothes she was wearing and forced to cross the border into Mexico. She did not know anyone in Mexico. Her high school started a campaign called "Where's Virginia".
Virginia's story upset many of us, but there is nothing we can do. The students on our team decided that we would name our robot after her.
Some of the old timers in FIRST might remember the Amadou story a few years ago. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=46922)

We always name ours after an esteemed mentor, names in the past have been Big Bill, Stormin's Norman, V^2 (Vintage Vinnage). This year's machine has been named after our Team Leader, long overdue, Sharky's Machine.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

MOE's robot is generally called MOE, but they all do have an official name, which has to have MOE in it. The names are nominated and voted upon by the team every year. This year we started with over 30 nominations, and everyone voted for their top three. The top three with the most votes were then voted upon again to get the final winner. It will be announced shortly, but here are the past names:

2000 - Big MOE (originally just MOE, but since it was the biggest we had ever built, it later got dubbed Big MOE)
2001 - Lil' MOE (smallest to date; it was built to go under the center bar for those of you who remember that game)
2002 - MOEhawk (it had two enormous wings to grab three goals at a time)
2003 - GeroniMOE
2004 - GizMOE
2005 - MOEbius
2006 - TerMOEnator
2007 - MOEzilla

BTW, for those who don't know, MOE stands for Miracle of Engineering

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Just to add to Carol's post, brainstorming and voting on our robot’s name has always been part of our MOE spirit and team building. Since little kids always suggest names to us when we do community demos, the past few years, we’ve started asking for their input and even take chart paper to the demos and add them to our brainstorming list… they have great ideas and it’s a way to spark their interest in this year’s team and in someday joining a team themselves. MOE (Miracles of Engineering) was inspired by DuPont’s Miracles of Science slogan.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Chuck has been Chuck since the kids decided that Charminator, for our major sponsor back in '97, was insufficiently muscley. Since many of the kids were wearing Chuck Taylor All-Stars, they came up with the name 'Chuck' for the Charminator and it stuck.

In our early years, we also had semi-scientific add-ons to the Chuck name, such as Chuck-R-2 and Chuck-PI, but then we were not easily recognized the following year with a different variation. We decided to stick with just Chuck.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

Team 166 kind of had a history of naming the robots "Tommy Hawk 1-5" every couple of years. Tommy Hawk being a play on words refering to the high school mascot, The Tomahawk.

We kind of grew out of that and haven't used it since 2004.

2005 - OTIS because of the style of our elevator.
2006 - Scorpio because of our shooter design.
2007 - Gemini because it was our first year building two robots.
2008 - Atlas because of the size of the trackball.

I really would have liked to continue the Zodiac theme with Aries because of our gripper design, but the team voted on Atlas for our 2008 'bot.

The names are only really used when refering to past years. Right now, and until we get to next year, the robot will be called "the robot". We start calling it by it's intended name when we build a new robot.

Re: Does your teams robot have an offical name?

We did not have a name the first two years because we just had to build the robot with the numbers students we had. This year we have named the 'bot the Nebuchadnezzar (yes the Matrix ship) and are doing a theme around that this year.
