Things that are unnecessary

My friend and I often describe things as "unnecessary," and I am curious to see what kind of things all of you consider to be unnecessary. For example, we have decided that the bell that rings when you walk into fitting rooms, the expression 'you're welcome,' and the fact that only about 6 people in the world actually like their noses are all very unnecessary.

By the way, lemon ice is very necessary. Very.

Really? I find them to be quite influential in the progression of the human race. And that wasn't even sarcasm.

Statue of Liberty? I think it is unnecessary, (think of the wiring possibilities with that much copper) but just try and tell that to a New Yorker.
Also, Yield signs. As they said on 'Corner Gas', they are like a stop sign that just couldn't make it.

Umm, the reason they are totally unnecessary is that there is absolutely no need to heat hot water. Now, water heaters on the other hand, totally necessary.

I also like "you're welcome," but find the expression "don't mention it" very unnecessary. If I said thank you , I just mentioned it, didn't I? Why tell me not to mention it?

Re: Things that are unnecessary

The expression "my bad" is unnecessary. You may be crudely admitting your guilt (when it may be obvious that you are to blame), but you still haven't apologized for what you have done.

Bluetooth headsets are unecessary. You even look weird when you're talking, seemingly, to yourself with your cell phone down at your side.

McDonald's is unecessary. Wendy's and Burgerking are better. :p

Unnecessary: not necessary or essential; needless; unessential.

This thread is unnecessary...

The list goes on and on and on, pretty much only the things that all humans are required to have to life (i.e. water, shelter, food, warmth, etc.), otherwise, everything else= unnecessary

And In-N-Out trumps all three. (If you are in range of one; the main cluster is in CA, AZ, and NV.)

Re: Things that are unnecessary

"I'm sorry"
When used as an apology, this is fine. Otherwise, it is completely unnecessary. For example: "I'm sorry you've got a cold." The person most likely has nothing to do with the disease, and is not responsible - how could someone be sorry for something she didn't do?

"I hate to say it, but..."
If you hate to say it, then DON'T SAY IT. Usually, this prefaces something the speaker loves to say.

"Tasty"
Describing something as "tasty" is a complete nondescription. It has a taste. SO DOES EVERYTHING ELSE! It's not even describing that taste - is it a pleasureable taste, or a repulsive taste?

Not appreciating or taking advantage of opportunities that come your way is unnecessary

A ship without a compass is unnecessary
A bad attitude blocking the way is unnecessary
A joke without a punch line is unnecessary
Refusing to listen is unnecessary
Liver and onions are totally unnecessary

I get caught saying "I'm Sorry" way too much, especially when something has nothing to do with me or there is no need to state that I'm sorry. Sometimes I end it in a question mark.

Ellipses (...) are unnecessary but I have a habit of using them way too much... <---right there, a simple period would suffice.

Teaser threads.
If you got something to say. Say it.
If you got something to hide then keep it to yourself.
Otherwise you're just wasting bandwidth and everybody's time.

Well, the distinction between hot water heaters and water heaters completely validates that point.

PS - I think he means it's pointless to learn the names of Freshmen when you usually end up mixing them up or saying, "Hey you!" I could be wrong, though.

Agreed. Do they really need a name? I generally stick with the standard "hey you", until they prove themselves worth remembering. Go ahead and call it mean, but I only have so much memory and I am not going to waste it.

You know, this has been an interesting side discussion to read.
I've been very privileged to spend some time with a rookie team here in Austin, FRC 2468. They are a curriculum-based team comprised of 2 classes, 1st and 2nd period of the day. They are made up solely of Seniors with one Junior.

Next year, the team will basically have to start from scratch except for the one returning student. They will struggle with continuity and lack of experience.

Freshmen/new members are very important to a team's growth, development, and continuity. In Austin, we hope to continue to help new rookie teams start and establish themselves. Freshmen are a very important part of achieving this goal.

Just another way of looking at things. :)

Re: Things that are unnecessary

Just because they are important, doesn't mean that their names are. Names are not important in the first place. Refer to "Romeo and Juliet",

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose,
By any other word would smell as sweet;"

They aren't important, and therefore unnecessary. Also, the only reason that I learn anyones name is out of respect. They are freshman. They don't have my respect until they earn it. And when they earn my respect, then they earn their name. If you need a place to go to see my teaching style, watch "Scrubs". Perry is a bit harsher then me, but we both use somewhat similar styles. Add pressure and work them hard. They might not like you right away, but many people need this pressure to learn at full speed. Not that all of team 1766 is this way. In fact, I push people harder then anyone else on my team. But all must admit, I get good results. Sorry for the ramble.

I walked into the shop last week after an absence of 10 days due to work and travel.
First thing I did was run into a small group of students organizing the tool cart and I saw a new face. As usual, I said, 'hello, who are you?' After he had introduced himself and told me a little bit about joining the team - one of the other freshman who had had a very shy transition from middle school to LASA, said, 'Jane! Is there finally a student on the team whose name you don't know!?'

I wasn't quite sure how to respond.
I value names.

We come from different perspectives.

This is odd, and totally opposite of the way I am familiar with, as a person working on a team. I don't ever think that a person should earn my respect, but I should earn theirs. I feel embarrassed if I don't know a team member's name, and find it disrespectful to them if I don't.

I'm like Jane... and can't fathom the thought of not caring about what someone's name is until they show something that I respect.

Disrespecting other people by not caring what their name is... is unnecessary.

Re: Things that are unnecessary

Following this thread reminded me of Mark Twain's "A Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling":

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling, so that "which" and "one" would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish "y" replasing it with "i" and Iear 4 might fiks the "g j" anomali wonse and for all.

Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez "c", "y" and "x" -- bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez -- tu riplais "ch", "sh", and "th" rispektivli.

Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.

edit: The robot was shipped back to us this morning. I bet there are not many teams that can say their robot came back from Atlanta undefeated.

That's rude and highly biased... I never understood this anti-freshman attitude. What did they do to you?! When I was a freshman I wasn't any different from now at all, and I don't see any drastic difference from freshmen compared to sophomores or so. Except freshmen don't sound stuck up. What's your problem with freshmen, seriously? I've always been wondering this, maybe it's something only Americans understand, I don't know...? :( It makes me sad that people are so prejudiced against others a bit younger than them.

On-topic:

High School Graduation Tests are unnecessary... no...
Finals are unnecessary.
Religious schools are unnecessary. Wait, make me correct myself. They are harmful.
Marijuana... All it does is get you in huge trouble for a bit of fun time.
Making drugs illegal. If they were legal the above would never have been an issue.
Homework in AP classes.
Physical Education in schools.
Sugar/Sucralose/Fructose/Corn Syrup/High Fructose Corn Syrup/Aspartame/Nutrasweet/(did I skip something?) is absolutely unnecessary in 90% of the foods they add it into... Try to find something without high fructose corn syrup in it.
Sports entertainment is unnecessary. Sports are not for entertainment. Or injuries, for that matter. The fact that sports are so retarded these days is why I ended up dropping lacrosse and going into robotics. Pretty happy with my choice so far.
Expressed racism, homophobia, sexism, patriotism, etc. It's pure showing off and nothing more.
