Thats because I've been working on those credits since October. I had the idea last April to do a dancing Ted Boardman for the credits.

Ours isn't online yet, but it will be... something tells me just a few of these animations were A. not done entirely in 3Ds MAX and B. somewhat silly maybe?

now I wish ours hadn't been so serious... plus crappy, I only spent 8 hours on it, and we didn't even use my charactor... that's what happens if you get into building the bot.

Guilty as charged.
It was easier doing the gif like animations in Premiere and it was more fun making something like those ubiquitous commercials that sell do everything products at some ridiculously cheap price with a billion extras for free.

A: true, we used combustion to composite some of the effects.

B: True. But come on. You can't be serious all the time. After all we are making cartoons. ;)

Wow, looks like some excellent animations this year round. Personally, I heart light saber squirels though those credits were very long.

Lol, I didn't mean it as a bad thing, silly is good, I'm sure that the judges will enjoy the break from constat seriousness. Though I can just imagine it playing in the award competition lol.
And I don't have any problem with none 3DS MAX ones, it was pretty worthy, and beats the pants off of our's

We were sort of afraid that the luddite philosophy we decided to highlight would be unpopular with people in FIRST. :)

Also, explodingcan, I really like the accent on your animation's narrator. My question might sound really stupid, but is that how most hawaiians talk?

Not really. our nararrator is just a regular student. Just because we are from hawaii, it doesnt mean that everyone talks in a hawaiian accent. Hawaiian is a separate language. I mean its just like when australians say, mate. I am replying in a way that rarely anyone in hawaii would reply like. If someone was hawaiian and they read that post, they will be full on racist so,
thanks for the comment.

We chose him as our narrator because we thought he had the "professional" voice. And explodingcan is right, not all of us in Hawaii has that accent. We talk English too.

Its good, But I do not see your 5 second slate at the beginning. Is this a different version than what you sent to FIRSTbase? If there is no different version, not having a slate at the begining would be grounds for disqualification. I would hate to see all that work go to waste.

Thats funny. I absolutely love your Dean Kamen character. Hmmmm... I got to create my own someday. Keep using him, But still challenge yourself by re-rigging him so your animation is smoother and your can crank out more facial expressions from him.

I have been amazed at how much Autodesk does for this competition. Any correspondence is quick and courteous. I think we are very lucky that they support this.

Haha...thanks! I would've re-rigged him if time permitted...but he only got in there because I ended up having to put Tyler's animation together in video editing software for him. Unfortunately we didn't have enough complete scenes for the audio track, so we ended up adding in some extra little quick things at the last minute :p .

Also...who's idea was it for a giant wall of refrigerators? ABSOLUTELY INGENIOUS!!!

And...I couldn't stop laughing for about ten minutes after seeing the thingamajingy...I'm pretty sure that completely made my day...awesome, well-executed idea...I want one...but no one picked up the phone when I called :( .

I'm seeing some really great animations here though! The competition gets tougher and tougher every year!

Well, to be quite honest, I am extremely disappointed in my animation. So much so, in fact, that I haven't looked at it since I submitted. So, I don't wish to show it to you guys at the moment, maybe later.

Ill post a link to what I had hoped to do (storyboard/concepts/design)... http://jrosselet.com/188/animation/storyboard.pdf

Too many things fell apart right at the end of the competition; I had MAJOR match moving problems, distributive rendering problems, problems of repetitive (and spontaneous) crashing when rendering, and exams cutting right in the middle. I worked really hard... yet crashed and burned.

I can't even explain how disappointed I am at the moment. Unfortunately for me, this was my first and last time competing in this challenge. :\

Please don't be too hard on yourself. We've all crashed & burned at one time or another. At least you've gained some invaluable experience.

The storyboard looks awesome. Why not finish the animation & let your team use it for fundraising and recruiting?

Are those your rendered stills in the storyboard?
Awesome lighting and detail. At that level, it would take a lot of CPUs to render in time.

Team Driven #1730
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy3kA_PYOtg
Story Board: http://www.teamdriven.us/webmedia/Story%20Board.ppt

We finished uploading the animation 7 minutes before it was due... To get the animation under the file size limit we had to reduce the quality to 9%. We started out at 800mb! So our animation that we had to submit looks like trash. So we made a high def version for ourselves so we didn't feel too bad.

Ok there is an area thats up for inturpretation in the Entry Format Requirements for the slate and credits.

it says: "Credits may follow that still frame"

but it dosent say what still frame, the prior still frame mentioned in that section was the slate so we put the credits after the slate. But the slate itself is exactly 5 seconds long.
hope there is no problems.:(

Now that I reread the rules again you might be right. I wonder if we're in trouble for adding our credits at the end, after the 2nd black screen.

This is not against you and I don't personally mean it to you, but I one of my pet peeves is the use of the biped. It its a horrible rig to use. As many of you probably know that by now the way I preach my anti-biped views on chiefdelphi. Nice concept, Also I think the bridge could be made a little more convenient on climbing. Those steps might be trouble for the elderly ;)

team 357

Awesome, the only thing I have to critique is a little too much camera movement. Again another of my pet peeves. But you guys didn't go overboard. Nice concept, like the models. I would work l style, lighting, and materials for next year. I think that would be cool if you made the entire thing Dr. suess like.;)

I love how it is a local problem that you are presenting. It makes it more personal. Few pointers, the water in the ocean could use less bump map. And the sand a little less grainy. Also Increase the size of your shadow maps so you get nice hard shadows like you would when your on the beach. Other than that very nice.

LoL I know you have a thing against bipeds. I wasn't going to use it either but was kind of a last resort thing. I had made a bone structure worked pretty well but except the envelopes were all screwed up and spent 8 hours trying to figure out how to fix them. In the end I was short on time and decided to just use character studio to save some time. The thing in the garbage at then end is my character I was going to use. Thanks

Thanks! We're a rookie team, so I wasn't really sure how ours compared to others. However, the issue discussed in the animation actually isn't local. Our school is in Atlanta, GA, but our animators were very adamant about the issue so they designed the concept for the animation around it.

Here's team 1902's first ever animation:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8TyB1HMAI4

We spent a good deal of time doing tutorials and getting over the 'ohhh look at the moving 3d objects phase' but we managed to come up with this in the end. In the chaos of the last couple days we never got a narration (which we were kinda almost planning on doing) so sorry if its a bit confusing. We'll be more on task next year!

The funny thing about your last statement is that our entry in 2007 was entirely based on Dr.Suess. Unfortunately I don't have a link to it, but I'll try to get it up soon. Thanks for the feedback though, we really appreciate it! Also, we're secretly trying to get 1K views of our animation in 1 month, so be sure to watch! Perhaps over and over again!

I've actually used max once before on my old team before I moved, but this is the first for the rest of us (and i learned so much during the year i almost feel like this is my first year truly using max). The rest of the team is still really good! Thanks for the compliment.

By the way, your credits are incredible, they made my day.

Ted Boardman is one of the judges on the judging panel that looks at all the animations in Atlanta. He also teaches lessons in the autodesk booth in Atlanta. He also has his own thing on Thursday in Atlanta called "The Phill and Ted show" where they give detailed lessons over max and look at some of the entries and say what is good and what is bad about them. If you go to Atlanta this year, I highly recommend you attending these lessons. You learn a bunch and they give away free books. (Plus I will hopefully be in the autodesk booth this year and I love teaching people all about my techniques.)

I personally know Ted Boardman and thought it would be funny to have him dance.

We finished uploading the animation 7 minutes before it was due... To get the animation under the file size limit we had to reduce the quality to 9%. We started out at 800mb! So our animation that we had to submit looks like trash. So we made a high def version for ourselves so we didn't feel too bad.

Cant wait to see you at STL.

My guess is they will release the videos on the website on the 28th of February. Its the day after all the Inventor entries are due.

Love the HP notebook style that you did. Very different from the majority.

Team 1334's animation: http://firstbasefrc.autodesk.com/?nd=m_first_competition_vis2008_viewer&fileview=or ig/competition/669/1334/1team_1334.mov

For having to use an online converter to convert from .avi to .mov, and a built in microphone on an MP3 player for sound, the quality is surprisingly good.
