I love it. I wanted to do that.

Do you have more bumpers planned?

I can't wait to see the flag holder in this one...I will really look like an RC car!

Yes we do. this is our practice drive base. The final one has more bumpers.

Is that really the robot you are going to use at competitions and if so that is awsome.:D

other than that, it'll be interesting how many laps you guys can fit in, good luck.

that is exactly what we wanted to do!! but our mentors talked us out of it.

Nice robot, little small but understand its for speed, though your 6 sec per lap may be doubled or tripled in time because track will be pretty crowded :P

All you need now is a suspension system and some high traction tires

I love the 20 FPS. But will you really be able to do that the whole time with 5 other bots and the balls on the field?

It would be wonderful to see the completed thing in a video, if at all possible. As a rookie team this year, we are very interested in seeing other robots, and would like to know how you managed to pull this off. We would like to know how you plan on mounting your flag holder, how your steering is done (car steering?) and what does your robot look like underneath? Thanks!

We'll be glad to get some video and pics for you tomorrow... I should be able to do that, but we still have to finish the final version of this bot as well as some other things...:)

Beauuuuutiful.

20 FPS like ours.
But I'm pretty sure you accelerate crazy fast.
And if that's an Ackerman Steering System,
Good luck to the rest of its class ;)

I say, bravo for staying so weightless. We could only manage a 60 (with battery and bumpers). And you managing a 36 lb? That's just insane.

Bravo.

6 seconds per lap?

At kickoff, the driver of 330 with a very nice electric RC racing car (was it 1/18th scale?) that was much faster than 20 fps was taking 7-8 seconds per lap.....

Shane having an electric racing car? That's like saying that my Aero Design planes use rubber bands! They're gas-powered, like his car. (Unless he got another one.)

And yeah, those racecars are faster than 20 fps max. If you can't beat the car, you can't have 6 second laps...

Re: pic: 1519 robot as of last tuesday

Do you drift it? That would make cornering a little faster.

IntensifiedAmp 16-02-2008 01:54

Re: pic: 1519 robot as of last tuesday

If that's true then it should simply be a theoretical value.

The RC Car should reach its max speed much more faster than a robot, due to its mass.

But we'll just wait 'til we see the blur in the video ;)

Re: pic: 1519 robot as of last tuesday

Team 190 was able to get consistent 6.5 second laps with a small electric RC car.

Yeah, the flag holder is on the end of a fiberglass pole :)

But most RC cars don't have two CIMs driving them. This robot is roughly 1/4 the weight of a "normal" FRC robot, and has half the power (From what I've seen, most teams use 4 CIMs). Thus, it has roughly twice the power-to-weight ratio of most robots, and probably accelerates quite nicely.

Thank you so much! Of course we want you to finish your robot before you take time to shoot a video. We are scrambling ourselves to finish with only 3 days left! So exciting for our rookie team! Thank you for your efforts to help us learn.

In terms of power to weight; CIMs aren't that great. I'm sure the RC car has a much better power to weight ratio than the robot. Also, that car went way faster than 20 fps. I'm calling shenanigans on the 6 fps lap.

I'm calling shenanigans on the shenanigans on the 6 fps lap... I can do that walking :D

But yeah testing it again today we got a couple 5.3s laps. We're editing a video for you guys don't worry.
We do realize it will be much harder w/ obstacles. These numbers were from clear field runs...

I'd love a 20 fps akerman steering robot, but the traffic and low speed maneuverability is what concerned us. This robot looks fun to drive though. :)

It was an electric brushless 1/18th scale. I wouldn't run a gas one indoors :)

It's strange comparing the accelerations of the two, but for overall acceleration, the 1/18th RC will smoke the robot. The 1/18 will accelerate to 50 fps in about 2 or so seconds with decent traction. Off the line, a robot might snap ahead momentarily because of it's torq/traction advantage, but once the 1/18th gets going, it's gone. The surface at the kickoff was slick flooring, so I had drift the car around the corners always and couldn't build up any speed. That's why I was doing 7-8 second laps. And as a side note, that field mock-up at the kickoff was maybe half the size of a normal regulation field, which shows just how great the lack of traction was.

While it might seem that drifting is faster, in most situations I don't think that's true. You can carry quite a bit more speed through the corner if you can maintain consistent control and rely on static friction. You can change your acceleration vectors (when turning) quicker. It's partly why you don't see Formula One, Nascar, etc. running sideways. But with the traffic that there will be, it will be difficult to hold any speed through a corner.

Do you mean that you are calling our "6 second lap" shenanigans? I really hope not.
Keep in mind that we are driving on a perfectly open field with no obstacles. And we drove on carpet, giving ideal traction. Our robot accelerates very fast.

Where is your flag pole, you have to add a 51" tall flag pole!

from your demionsions it looks like you could actually fit into the front of our robot, if there was a collision, if a robot like yours gets stuck inside another robot, do you still get 2 points when we cross your finish line?

wow! freakin sweet! definetly going to keep my eye out for your robot! flag holder is going to be tricky. Reminds me of a small RC car. :P

It doesn't say how you must cross to get the points, so yes. However, one team or the other (or maybe both) probably gets a penalty for entanglement.
